2018 NFL Draft Stock - Combine (Stock Up - Lorenzo Carter, LB, Georgia: Carter was one of the stars of the combine on Sunday, when the 6-foot-5, 250-pound illustrated some freakish athletic ability. He put up a tremendous 40 time of 4.46 seconds. With his size, length and athleticism, Carter really helped himself by showing that kind of speed. He is a natural fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. In a 4-3 defense, he could an outside linebacker but also might get some consideration as a situational defensive end in the sub package. Combine Notes: Day 6 (Lorenzo Carter and Roquan Smith of Georgia both had terrific combine workouts. Carter, who I’ve always believed was a first-round talent, ran under 4.5 in the 40, bested everyone in his group with a broad jump of 10-feet-10-inches and posted a vertical jump of 39.5 inches. Roquan Smith ran 4.51 and will do the rest of the drills at his pro day. I have been informed both players were red-flagged medically by a number of teams due to past injury history. 5 prospects who should stand out at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine (Lorenzo Carter: Georgia had a very successful season in 2017, and much of that success can be attributed to their defense. Led by linebacker Roquan Smith, the Bulldogs defense was talented at just about every position. One of the unsung heroes of that group was Carter. Much like former teammate Leonard Floyd before him, Carter is a long, lanky edge rusher. At 6-6, 243 pounds, he has the length that scouts love at the position. Also like Floyd, his stats aren’t exactly anything to call home about. Carter had 4.5 sacks this year and totaled 14 sacks in four seasons. What really sticks out about Carter, though, is his eye-opening athleticism. Carter is explosive off the snap with his impressive first-step acceleration. He changes direction extremely well, and he has excellent closing speed. He has fluid hip movements in coverage, as well. Given his explosion off the edge, Carter figures to do well in the vertical jump. He also figures to be a candidate to shine in the 40-yard dash and the three-cone drill. Carter has been getting quite a bit of recognition as a late riser in this year’s class. With a dominant combine showing, he could potentially sneak into the first round.) Monday Musings -- February 12 (While everyone gushes over Roquan Smith, I can’t say enough about Georgia teammate Lorenzo Carter. Carter lacks the quickness of Smith but is a better pass rusher, plays with more force and is also effective in space. Orange Bowl victory would complete a historic run for Wisconsin senior class (Jacobs played outside linebacker in 2013, inside linebacker in 2014 and ‘15 and then fullback in ’16 before moving to outside linebacker during spring practice in ’17. Cleanup time: No. 5 Wisconsin’s defense wrecks another foe (Wisconsin outside linebacker Leon Jacobs was a one-man wrecking crew against Iowa. An active linebacking corps looked like it could shut down the Hawkeyes on its own. Jacobs’ heady play in scooping up a fumble after a bad snap for a 21-yard return for a score showed that the defense had smarts to match its physical play. Upon Further Review: Badgers vs. Purdue (Player of the Game - Taylor would seem like a good choice, but we can't reward a fumble in the red zone in a tight game. With the way the defense played in this one, it seems appropriate to go with someone from that side of the ball. Jacobs led Wisconsin with nine tackles with .5 TFL and a quarterback hurry. But it was his interception in the fourth quarter which sealed the deal. With Purdue down by one score, the Boilermakers had third-and-goal from the Badgers' 7, Jacobs made an incredible play on the sideline to snare a pass by Elijah Sindelar, who had been pressured by Olive Sagapolu and Alec James into making a forced throw. It was Wisconsin's only takeaway of the game but it ended up being the nail in the coffin and Purdue never got the ball back in the game.) Draft Stock Report: Barkley-Jewell matchup results in boost (Josey Jewell, LB, Iowa, rSR. (6-1, 236, 4.78, #43): Paired with Barkley for most of the night, it must have been a subpar performance by Jewell if the Penn State running back posted 300-plus of total offense, right? Quite the contrary from a scouting perspective because it might have been 400 yards of total offense if not for the play of Jewell, who finished with 16 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, two pass break-ups, one interception and one fumble recovery. He has a high football IQ with the read/react quickness to leverage run lanes and eliminate options for the ballcarrier. Jewell isn’t a top-tier athlete, something that was clear when asked to cover Barkley in space, but his nonstop hustle in pursuit helps compensate for his ordinary speed. Week 3 Risers and Sliders (Micah Kiser/LB/Virginia: Kiser is a linebacker I enjoyed scouting in recent years despite some very poor seasons for his team. Though the Cavaliers were consistently outmatched, Kiser could be seen making plays sideline to sideline all game. The tide seems to be turning in his favor, and Kiser has received third-round grades in some areas of the scouting community. During this week's victory over UConn, the senior led the Cavaliers with 15 tackles, two for loss, and two sacks while also forcing a fumble. He’s an explosive linebacker who plays with top instincts and a non-stop motor. More of a two-down defender, he’ll be a demon in the inside of a 3-4 alignment.) NFL Draft Watch: FBS Linebacker Overview (Can Make A Big Jump - Micah
Kiser, Virginia: Kiser is usually found flying all over the field, and
that works both for him and against him. He ranked 15th in the draft
class in percentage of positively-graded playsagainst the run, but also
ranked 32nd in highest-percentage of negatives. Cutting down on the
negative plays, combined with Kiser’s size and athleticism, will make
him an attractive prospect next spring. Keep an eye on him getting after
the quarterback where he notched seven sacks, two QB hits, and 21
hurries last season to go with a national-high six batted passes.)
