2018 NFL Draft: Josh Allen leads top 10 boom-or-bust prospects (8. Andrew Brown, DL, Virginia: Best team fits: Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins. Analysis: Brown's physical prowess is no joke. When he's using his 6-3 1/2, 285-pound frame and 35-inch arms to their fullest, he can be disruptive. His athleticism might push a team to use a top-50 pick on his talents, banking that he will flourish in their system. Despite being a five-star prospect out of high school, however, Brown struggled to make an impact in his first two seasons with the Cavaliers, totaling just 10 tackles (three for loss) combined in 2014 and 2015. He stepped up in his final two years in Charlottesville (13 TFL, six sacks in 2016; 10.5 and 3.5 in 2017), moving from defensive tackle to defensive end. The lack of production early in his collegiate career and decrease in big plays as a senior will be a red flag to some teams. General managers saw him flash a nice power-agility combination at the Senior Bowl, though, and he will likely impress at the Combine. The former Cavalier was consistently able to win inside and out as a 3-technique, consistently exploding through the line of scrimmage. Stock Report: USF’s Quinton Flowers has NFL skills (Who hurt themselves? Andrew Brown, DL, Virginia, SR. (6-4, 280, 4.93, #9): If this year’s draft class has a Malik McDowell-type of prospect, that distinction might belong to Brown for his immense talent, but streaky production and lack of maturity. A former five-star recruit and Chesapeake native, Brown stayed home to help turn the program around, and while Virginia will play in a bowl game for the first time since 2011, it has been an up-and-down season for him. Both the ups and the downs were on display against Virginia Tech. Brown has an impressive combination of size, strength and athleticism and moves with twitch in his muscles to change directions and play in space. However, he is still trying to use all his strengths as a player in conjunction to be effective. Brown plays with questionable gap integrity, discipline and overall vision, relying more on natural skill than technique and awareness. And his maturity has also been a concern for scouts, which was illustrated against the Hokies in the fourth quarter when he found himself in an unneeded scuffle post whistle, striking an official in the process. With his team fighting for a win, Brown was correctly ejected from the game. When he plays up to his potential, he looks like a future first-round pick, but there is little consistency or discipline to his game, which will be a cement block attached to his draft stock.) Week 8 Risers and Sliders (Sliders - Andrew Brown/DL/Virginia: Brown entered the season graded as a potential late-round pick, yet he’s done nothing to disprove the belief that he’s just a size/speed prospect. Measuring over 6-foot-3 and just shy of 290 pounds, Brown is a terrific athlete yet does not make enough plays on the field. In seven games this season, he’s totaled just 18 tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack, falling well short of his numbers a year ago which included 13 tackles for loss and six sacks.) Watt comparison train will chug forward after Bryan's combine workout. At nearly the identical height and weight as the Texans' star, Bryan ran an official 40-yard dash of 4.98 seconds. Watt ran 4.91 in 2011. However, Bryan had a faster 10-yard split (1.68) than Watt (1.71). Bryan had a 9-foot-11 broad jump. Watt's was 10-foot. In the vertical, Bryan leaped 35 inches. Watt had a 37-inch vertical. Lastly, the former Florida stud had a 7.12 three-cone time. Watt's was 6.88. From an athletic perspective Bryan is extremely close to Watt, he just has shorter arms. Bryan has exceptional body control and acceleration for a man of his size, looking more like a linebacker than a 6-4, 291-pound defensive tackle when asked to drop, change direction and accelerate toward the sidelines. Phillips, stouter at 307 pounds, is not the same caliber of athlete, but he was smoother than anticipated — and no one is stronger. He led all Combine participants with 42 repetitions in the bench press. While scouts are still waiting for Bryan’s athleticism to translate into production, no one questions Phillips’ instincts, motor and tackling skills after he led the Cardinal with 100 stops last season.) However you want to label Bryan's decision to pick up Alabama RB Joshua Jacobs and slam him to the turf, the outcome was a flagrant personal foul and an ejection for the third-year sophomore. Alabama led 40-16 in the fourth quarter at the time, so the game was all but over -- but that's exactly when this kind of stuff typically happens. Sources Tell Us: Buzz building again for LSU RB Derrius Guice (The scoop: "I wouldn't be surprised if people were all over the place on Vita Vea. I think he's going to be a really good NFL player but he is still really raw and hasn't learned to recognize blocking schemes. I see his problems as correctable. I'll have a high grade on him." -- NFC scout on the Washington DT. The skinny: When I studied Vea this summer, I wrote in my notes that he didn't seem to recognize when down blocks were coming and didn't have his hands in the ready position to fight back against them. This continues to be a problem for him this season and leads to some inconsistency. I can see why the scout would believe opinions on Vea could be varied since there will be those who believe he's a two-down player. Vea has great size and enormous potential as a run-stuffer. The program placed at least one player in the first round of the NFL Draft in 11 of the past 12 years -- and they won’t come close in 2018. The team’s top senior prospect, cornerback Duke Dawson, was given a mid-round grade by scouts. The top underclassman, receiver Antonio Callaway, has been suspended by the team and is facing felony charges as a result of his participation in a credit card scandal. I’m told the only player who has a chance to crack the second day of the draft is junior defensive tackle Taven Bryan, and he would need springs to jump into the top 99 picks.) 2018 NFL Draft Stock - Week 7 (Stock Up - Taven Bryan, DT, Florida: Bryan was incredible against Texas AM. He looked phenomenal, using speed to fire by offensive lineman and his power to shed blocks. In the third quarter, Bryan killed a series for the Aggies. Texas AM tackled him around the neck to prevent a sack, and that drew a holding penalty that wiped out a 40-yard gain. Bryan blew up the next rushing play. Then, he beat a double team from the guard and tackle, firing between them and using strength to achieve the third-down sack. Shortly later, Bryan added another sack on a third-and-goal to force a field goal. Against Texas AM, he had seven tackles with 1.5 sacks. Bryan has 20 tackles with four tackles for a loss and three sacks this season. The announcers were comparing 6-foot-4, 295-pounder Bryan to J.J. Watt, and in terms of style of play, Bryan is reminiscent of Watt. In speaking with a director of college scouting, we agreed that Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe was a good comparison to Bryan. Bryan has a tremendous get-off, with serious explosion off the snap. He has developed strength with active hands to shed blocks. He had a coverage sack with a nice second effort in the first team-scrimmage session. Ford also got the better of Washington State guard Cody O'Connell in the team scrimmage with a speed rush during which he got lower than the 6-foot-9 guard for the win. O'Connell should have just pushed Ford into the ground, as most pro lineman would have done, and the coaches advised O'Connell of that after the play. Ask seasoned NFL executives and they’ll tell you that is still one of the two most important aspects of the week in Indy (interviews being the other). Unfortunately, two likely first-round prospects entering Indy left town with much lower stocks because of medicals. The other big medical flag raised on a player Price faced often, Michigan’s Maurice Hurst. The talented defensive lineman got yanked from the workouts due to an abnormal heartbeat. Hurst will undergo a medical retest in a couple of weeks. There is no immediate word on the severity or even the diagnosis of the underlying issue, so it’s important not to speculate too much. Some heart maladies are easily correctable with either medication or surgery which will allow enough of a recovery to let Hurst keep playing. Others will end his NFL dreams. As someone with personal experience on this front, I wish Hurst nothing but the best. It’s too early to know how this impacts his draft stock.) Penn State RB Saquon Barkley is clearly the top prospect in the game, but one of the more intriguing players in the contest plays along the defensive front for the Wolverines -- DT Maurice Hurst. Hurst is an undersized interior defender (scouts measured him in the spring at 6-foot-1 3/8 and 287 pounds) who relies on quickness and instincts to make plays against both the run and pass. After studying tape of him, I think he's ideally suited to play in an aggressive scheme that allows him to attack rather than sitting and holding the point of attack. He will have a hard time holding up vs. double teams, and that would negate his greatest weapon, which is his first-step quickness. 2018 NFL Draft: Miami Hurricanes’ Kendrick Norton, RJ McIntosh turning pro (McIntosh, listed at 6-4 and 293 pounds, won the team’s defensive MVP award after registering 52 tackles (12.5 for loss), 2.5 sacks and seven pass break-ups, the most by an ACC defensive lineman in 2017 and tied for the fourth-most in the last decade. He also recovered a fumble and had Miami’s longest return — 35 yards — of the year. “He’s a good player who could be a very good player down the road,” said longtime NFL Draft analyst Tony Pauline, who pegs McIntosh as a third-rounder. Miami has had at least one first-rounder in each of the last three drafts: offensive tackle Ereck Flowers and wide receiver Phillip Dorsett in 2015, cornerback Artie Burns in 2016 and tight end David Njoku last year. 2018 NFL Draft Stock - Week 5 (Derrick Nnadi, DT, Florida State: Nnadi had a huge game with some clutch plays to help his team avoid an embarrassing road upset to Wake Forest. Early in the first quarter, Nnadi jumped offsides, but on the next two plays, he fired into the backfield to get in on tackles for a loss. Throughout the first half, Nnadi was having his way with the Wake Forest offensive line, causing a lot of disruption at the point of attack. In the fourth quarter, Nnadi burst through the line on a stretch run to smother a back in the backfield while also jarring a fumble loose. My pick for the Lions, and some other combine thoughts (Haloti 2.0 - The Lions will need to replace Haloti Ngata soon. Depending on what happens in free agency, they could have to do it as soon as this season. So who better to do it with than Haloti 2.0? Ngata measured 6-foot-3 and 338 pounds at the combine in 2006. Washington's Vita Vea checked in at 6-4 and 347 pounds. Of course, what has made Ngata so special was how well he moved for a man that size. He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.18 seconds. But Vea did it in 5.10. This kid is bigger than Ngata, and faster too, and anyone who has watched Ngata play football realizes how scary this is. Vea would be an excellent fit in Detroit. The only question is whether he actually has any shot of lasting until 20. He had to pull out of the combine after tweaking his hamstring, and the tape can sometimes be a little up and down. Lions could find defenders with versatility in draft (Players who can play multiple positions make it easier to be a multiple defense. Prospects have really been trying to sell their versatility this week in Indy. At 347 pounds, Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea is one of those guys. Vea is a monster on the interior, but he’s also got quick feet and some position versatility. "Over at Washington, you can put on the film. We played all across the line,” Vea said. “It wasn't one specific position that we were assigned to. If it was a D-line job or a D-line position, we were playing it.” The ability to eat up space and double teams, and be a run stopper as a nose tackle, is a terrific asset to 3-4 teams. But Vea seems to have the athletic ability to also slide over and play the three-technique in a 4-3. Scouting the Fiesta Bowl: Penn State vs. Washington (Anchoring Washington’s defense is defensive tackle Vita Vea. Last year we were very high on him, and the same holds true now. He comes in with 38 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He’s a thick and strong rusher who can easily use his size to stonewall blockers and fill gaps. Vea is deceptively quick off the ball, and when he can get a jump on an offensive lineman it’s nearly a sure thing that he’ll win the battle. Listed at 6-foot and 340 pounds, Vea’s greatest pass-rush move is a simple bull rush, which will even overwhelm double teams somewhat regularly. The red flag with Vea’s game is his tendency to take plays off. On film, he can sometimes be seen standing straight up and not giving much of an effort to break through the line or sit and clog a gap. The skill and size are certainly there for a Pro Bowl-caliber defensive tackle, as he often draws comparisons to Haloti Ngata. However, if teams feel his effort is an issue, they may pass on him. I think he's going to be a really good NFL player but he is still really raw and hasn't learned to recognize blocking schemes. I see his problems as correctable. I'll have a high grade on him." -- NFC scout on the Washington DT. The skinny: When I studied Vea this summer, I wrote in my notes that he didn't seem to recognize when down blocks were coming and didn't have his hands in the ready position to fight back against them. This continues to be a problem for him this season and leads to some inconsistency. I can see why the scout would believe opinions on Vea could be varied since there will be those who believe he's a two-down player. Vea has great size and enormous potential as a run-stuffer. I also see a player who can be disruptive as a pass rusher, so I'm in the camp that believes he'll get coached up and become a good NFL run-plugger/pocket-pusher who can keep linebackers clean.) 2018 NFL Draft Stock - Week 10 (Stock Up - Vita Vea, DT, Washington: It is hard for nose tackles to receive first-round grades because nose tackles aren't viewed as players who contribute much pass rush. However, team sources say that Vea could be a pick in the back half of Round 1 in the 2018 NFL Draft. Vea's play this season will help his chances of being a first-round pick. He has shown the ability to contribute some in the pass rush while being big, strong, and having a burst at the point of attack. Vea (6-5, 340) is very reminiscent of Danny Shelton at Washington, and Shelton ended up going as a top-20 pick. Vita Vea, DT, Washington - 2017 stats: 18 tackles (12 solo), including 2 for loss (2 sacks), 1 pass breakup, 1 blocked kick. - Vea is such an athlete that coaches stood him up as a 340-pound (at least) pass rusher last season in the national semifinal against Alabama. The quickness he possesses for his size is astounding, and he's willing to hustle outside the box. Vea is also able to hold up double-teams at the line of scrimmage and disengage to make the stop. Tuesday Draft Notes -- 2.0 (Conversely draft grades for defensive tackle Vita Vea are volatile and understandably so. Vea is a big guy who plays with speed and can be an overwhelming force. He’s not limited and scouts feel he offers potential in a multitude of schemes and a variety of defensive line positions. Consistency is a huge problem for Vea in the scouting community -- he’ll be a dominant force on one snap then disappear for long stretches. In other words, he plays like a world beater on one set of downs then looks like an egg beater the next set of series. We alluded to this during our Washington preview at the start of the season, mentioning that Vea just doesn’t seem to play with a nasty attitude or killer mentality. Scouting the Pac-12: Washington (Vita Vea is a player that gets wide-ranging opinions on his game. At one point in January we quoted insiders who told us Vea would have been the first Huskies player selected in the 2017 draft had he entered the event. There are also some scouts who feel he’s only worth a third-round pick. On film Vea is athletic, explosive and disruptive. He beats defenders off the snap, fires through the gaps of the offensive line and easily pursues outside the box to make plays in space. He’s a load to handle when he’s on his game. All too often on film I saw Vea giving up on plays, not playing with a mean streak and lacking a physical nature. The upside is incredible if Vea decides to apply himself. 2018 NFL Draft Watch: Weekend Overview, Week 1 (Washington DI Vita Vea had the second-highest percentage of positively-graded blocks against the run last season and he picked up right where he left off with a 97.0 grade against the run against Rutgers. He picked up four run stops on only 23 plays against the run, good for an outstanding run stop percentage of 17.4 percent.) What we learned about Darnold, Rosen at Pac-12 Media Days (6. We had a great chat with Washington head coach Chris Petersen about his talented defensive tackle, Vita Vea. I congratulated him on convincing Vea to return to Seattle following an impressive 2016 campaign. However, Petersen was quick to correct me and explained that the decision to put off the draft for at least another year was made entirely by Vea. He sees areas where he can improve and he wants to be a very high pick when he makes the jump to the next level. He raved about Vea's maturity and believes we will see a better player this fall. Top 11 college football defensive linemen to watch in 2017 (5. Vita Vea, Washington: NFL-caliber wide-body with the ability to grow roots and own the grass under him against the run. Vea isn't just some heavy footed big man who is there to eat up space. He's a player with plus movement skills and pursuit quickness for his size. He can stack-and-shed blockers at the point of attack or chase down the line of scrimmage to make the play. He's more capable as a run stuffer than pass rusher.
