DT Vita Vea: Last week the Lions took LB Roquan Smith to fill the potential void left by Tahir Whitehead's free agency and, in general, a void in the overall talent at the position. Just like the 2015 NFC Wild Card game, the Cowboys steal something else from the Lions (thanks Long Ball). It's ok though Lions fans, since if we can't nab a talent like Smith, soon-to-be new Head Coach Matt Patricia will LOVE to have perhaps the best interior defensive linemen in the draft. We'll see you in the playoffs, Dallas. What to say about Vita Vea. The guy is a beast. At 6'4" and 346 pounds, he plays every bit of the part of disruptor to the opposition's offensive line by wreaking havoc in one-on-ones and filling up gaps when doubleteamed which only opens up his teammates. He would easily step in as one of the Lions' best defensive players on Day 1. Furthering the case for Vea to be the Lions pick here, the Lions traded (at the time) for 32 year old Haloti Ngata in 2015 to replace Ndamukong Suh. While Ngata is more than a serviceable defensive tackle, he is now 34 and served as a literal and figurative "stop-gap" player. If the Lions choose to not re-sign Ngata and are aiming to get better defensively, free up Ziggy Ansah, and get younger at the position, Vea is the right call. RB Josh Adams: Last week's second-round selection still remains in the Honolulu Blue and Silver for this week. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if the Lions were able to grab LSU running back Derrius Guice, but odds are, a talent like that won't make it to the Lions in the first round. They could choose to wait until later in the draft to grab a running back like Rashaad Penny from San Diego State or Oregon Ducks running back Royce Freeman. The running back class this year is considered deep, so waiting is an option here, but you cannot go wrong with taking a talent like Josh Adams here. At 6'2" and 220 pounds, Adams is considered tall for a back, but on a physical comparison, he reminds me of Le'Veon Bell (6'1" 225 pounds). He may not be as talented as Bell, but his ability to wait patiently for his linemen to set up lanes to run through is definitely something that's comparable to Bell. The knock on Adams is that he ran behind potential first round o-linemen Mike McGlinchy and Quenton Nelson at Notre Dame, but just watch his burst through those lanes. With linemen like Taylor Decker, T.J. Lang and Rick Wagner, the Lions are more than capable of running the football in 2018, they just would me more the wiser to take a runner like Adams than to keep the status quo with pass-catching specialists like Riddick and Abdullah as their full-time runners. 84. Walter Football Charlie's Mock (20. Marcus Davenport, DE: The Lions grab an end to go opposite of Ziggy Ansah, and if Ansah isn't re-signed, defensive end will be a huge need. Davenport (6-7, 256) is another small-school prospect who has earned a Senior Bowl invitation. He has length and athleticism to play on the edge in the NFL. In 2017, Davenport notched 55 tackles with 17.5 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, four passes batted and three forced fumbles. He totaled 6.5 sacks as a junior after notching four as a sophomore. Edge defenders with length are always in demand, so if Davenport plays well at the Senior Bowl, his stock could really rise. Scouts from multiple teams have told me that Davenport is a good player and impressed them in 2017, but they thought the top-16 is too high for him. They think the back half of the first round is possible. 51. Ronald Jones, RB, USC: The Lions could use a feature back to give them a rushing attack. Jones (6-0, 200) ran really well for USC in 2017, showing more decisiveness and displaying more power after gaining weight in the offseason. He also showed a burst at the point of attack with the quickness to rip off some chunk runs. On the season, Jones averaged 5.9 yards per carry for 1,550 yards with 19 touchdowns. He also had 14 receptions for 187 yards and a score. Jones ran for 1,082 yards in 2016 and 987 yards as a sophomore. 82. Oren Burks, ILB, Vanderbilt: The Lions could use more linebacking talent next to Jarrad Davis. Sources from multiple teams have told me that Burks (6-3, 230) impressed them in 2017. They like his combination of size, quickness and instincts. Burks recorded 82 tackles with seven tackles for a loss, one interception and three passes broken up in 2017. In 2016, he formed a potent linebacking tandem with Zach Cunningham. Burks totaled 59 tackles with 3.5 sacks and six passes broken up that season. I've mocked Christian Wilkins to them frequently, but with Wilkins going back to school, they'll have to look at another prospect, and there are several late first-round cornerbacks who can provide an upgrade for them. 51. DraftCountdown (17. Sam Hubbard, DE, OSU: Despite the presence of Ziggy Ansah and the emergence of Anthony Zettel, the Lions still rank in the bottom third of the league in sack production. There was such an extreme lack of depth they were forced to bring in 37-year-old Dwight Freeney mid-season to try and add a little juice. Making matters even worse, Ansah is going to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. While it’s hard to believe they’d let him get away, another pass rusher is desperately needed in Detroit even if Ansah is retained. Hubbard is a converted safety who has maintained much of that athleticism despite bulking up. Not only is Hubbard a speedy threat off the edge but he also moves extremely well on his feet and in space. And the scary part is he’s still developing and his best football is yet to come.)
