Week 5 Risers and Sliders (Adam Breneman/TE/UMass: Breneman is another rising NFL prospect on a losing squad -- the Minutemen have played six games since late August and have lost them all. During those half-dozen games, Breneman caught 36 passes for 500 yards (13.9 yard average). Against Ohio this weekend he registered 12 catches, 131 receiving yards and two TDs. Scouts graded Breneman, who transferred to UMass from Penn State, as a low-level free agent entering the season. Notebook: UMass TE Adam Breneman returns from injury (After a week of uncertainty, UMass senior tight end Adam Breneman did play in the Minutemen’s 17-7 loss to Old Dominion, but the Monarchs kept him in check Saturday. Breneman suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter at Coastal Carolina and didn’t return. He had just three catches for 18 yards against the Monarchs. UMass coach Mark Whipple said Breneman didn’t practice all week and the uncertainty around his availability limited how much he built into the game plan. “He didn’t practice all week. FCS prospects ready for NFL Combine (South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert has seen the headlines describing his NFL draft candidacy, but he feels he has something extra to prove. Goedert missed a breakout opportunity at the Senior Bowl last month because of a hamstring injury suffered in his team’s first practice. But he gets to state his case in the next week as one of 20 FCS players who will be among the 335-plus at the NFL combine, beginning Tuesday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. While many draft analysts have given the 6-foot-4 1/2, 260-pound Goedert a second- to third-round grade, his competitive fire still burns. “I just kind of hope to eliminate all the doubt that teams might have with me coming from a smaller college,” Goedert said. “They don’t think I played as high a competition and maybe can’t compete with (FBS-level players), so I just want to kind of prove them wrong and show them that I can compete with whoever’s lined up in front of me.” Goedert, considered one of the top tight end prospects in the draft, made the STATS FCS All-America first team in each of his final two seasons. some mock drafts that had Goedert going in the first round and rated him
the top tight end in the draft class. However after speaking to sources
at a handful of teams, none of them had Goedert graded in Round 1. The
highest grade among those five teams was a second-rounder. Two teams had
him graded in the third round, and two teams had a high fourth-round
grade on him. A few of the team sources also mentioned that there were
injury concerns with Goedert and his combine medical exam was going to
be important. If his medical profile isn't too alarming, Goedert appears
likely to be a second-day pick in a weak year at the tight end position
with plenty of teams across the league hoping to add young talent at

size, speed and athleticism teams love at the position. Concern: All

Skinny: He’s a former high school basketball player with terrific ball

Stock Report: QB prospects heading opposite directions (Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota State, rSR. (6-3, 255, 4.81, #86): This year’s crop of tight end prospects won’t match last year’s deep and top-heavy class, but there are several seniors worthy of day two consideration, including Goedert. The top-rated FCS prospect in the 2018 group, he was dominant vs. Missouri State on Saturday with eight catches for 170 yards and one touchdown and has been a mismatch against most opponents this season. Stylistically, Goedert is in the Jason Witten mold — not the fastest, but he uses route quickness and reliable ball skills to be a dangerous target. He does a great job expanding his catch radius with soft hands to attack the ball away from his body, regardless if wide open or stuck in traffic. Goedert does have some wasted movement at the top of routes and needs to tighten his footwork, but his well-rounded skill-set is enough for him to compete with Penn State’s Mike Gesicki and Wisconsin’s Troy Fumagalli to be the top senior tight end drafted next April.)
