2018 East-West Shrine Game Recap (Wagner offensive tackle Greg Senat was the one of the best players at the East-West Shrine and really helped himself this past week. That continued in the Shrine game, as Senat was rock solid. He was blocking well, using his length and quick feet to mirror speed rushers. On one play, Senat showed that he still needs development, as he played too high and had his hands too far to the outside to let a defender get into his chest and push him back. Winners Of The Shrine Game Practices (Greg Senat, OT, Wagner: A basketball player for the Seahawks, Senat took up football two years ago. Good decision. Blessed with long, powerful arms and the footwork to play power forward, he’s adapting quite well to the gridiron. He still needs work on keeping his weight down while engaged and at firing his arms out into the defender’s chest and not the outside of his shoulders, but there is a lot to work with here. The West offensive linemen who have earned praise are Army offensive tackle Brett Toth, Wagner offensive tackle Greg Senat, and Alberta's Mart Korte. That trio could all make rosters next fall with developmental potential. 2018 East-West Shrine Game: Monday's West Team Practice Report (SMU defensive end Justin Lawler had a good opening practice. He did well in the one-on-ones, using speed to fly by tackles and get pressure in the pocket. Lawler's speed caused Wagner offensive tackle Greg Senat to lose his balance as Lawler flew by him. The coaches gave Senat some coaching points on maintaining his balance. Lawler (6-4, 265) has a nice frame to him to go along with speed. Couch: 5 players who defined Michigan State's program-saving senior class (Brian Allen: Surrounded by an offensive line still finding its way, a group too green for Big Ten success, Allen has been an anchor at center, playing at an All-American level. He has been noticeably dominant and steady at a position that’s rarely noticed. He’s an intimidating presence. My guess is that’s a calming trait for the pups in the trenches with him. If MSU had four more Allens, it would have a forceful ground game. He’s never said that. He speaks about the line only as a collective. After MSU’s offensive tackles, sophomore Cole Chewins and redshirt freshman Luke Campbell, were overwhelmed by the speed of Ohio State’s rush ends, he didn’t shake his head or admonish them. He didn’t sugarcoat it, either. “Just learn from it,” Allen told them. “It wasn’t pretty by anyone on Saturday. I just let them know that you’re going to have bad games. That’s stuff’s going to happen. I’ve been there and struggled with teams like that when I was young. My pick for the Lions, and some other combine thoughts (It's a good year to need interior OL - Nelson won't be in play for the Lions, but again, there are so many other options from which to choose in the first and second round. Somebody like Will Hernandez (pictured), for example, who is weighed in at a gravitational 327 pounds. He was the second biggest offensive linemen here. Yet he ran the 40 in 5.15 seconds, which was third fastest among the guards. Plus he threw up 37 reps in the bench press, which led all offensive linemen. Can you imagine that guy pulling in the new Lions running attack? And, yes, the Lions used one of their 30 formal interviews on him.) Analysis: Hernandez was a svelte 325 pounds (most of it in his tree-trunk-like legs) this week, looking quite light-footed relative to that bulk. His 32-inch arms are not ideal for the position, but plenty of talented guards and centers have had successful careers with similarly sized limbs. His 37 reps on the bench were no surprise, and neither were his agility tests (4.70 short shuttle, 7.59 three-cone) if you had watched enough of his tape. He might still end up an early second-round pick, but his combination of strength and foot quickness could land him in Round One.) 2018 NFL Scouting Combine: Daily updates from Indy (Will Hernandez: Hernandez – our No. 3 ranked guard – looked quick and fluid for a big-bodied 6-foot-2, 327-pound guard. He was 340-pounds at the Senior Bowl and dropped 13 pounds to be lighter and more fluid in drills, and it showed. He ran a 5.15 40-yard dash which was impressive at his weight while looking solid in pass protection drills, backing up his 99.4 pass-blocking efficiency rating which ranked No. 2 in the class. Hernandez looked almost as good pulling in drills as he did pulling on film, minus the crumpled linebacker at the second level. He is one player you wouldn’t want to see running at you with bad intentions. Hernandez was able to bench press 225-pounds an impressive 37 times which led all offensive linemen at the combine. North Practice Report (I was already a fan of U.T.E.P. OG Will Hernandez, who is the heaviest player in attendance at 340 pounds. I may now qualify as a big fan, bordering on a full prospect crush. Hernandez is just one of those players you can easily pick out on the field at all times due to his unique frame. The guy is big and thick. In addition to fantastic mass, strength and power, Hernandez is physical and aggressive. As I said after one rep today: “#76 is a baaaaad dude”, which I meant in the best way possible. Hernandez told me he admires Richie Incognito and he definitely has a similar nasty temperament on the field. A few weeks ago I was told Hernandez had a shot to go in the Top 15-20 overall. College Football Week 1 (The best offensive guard in college football almost gave up the sport when he was in 10th grade. As the new coach at Las Vegas’s Chaparral High School, Bill Froman inherited a 230-pound sophomore lineman who had had a bad experience with the previous staff. The kid’s dad wanted him to go into construction. “I begged the family to let him play one more year,” Froman says. The kid, Will Hernandez, blossomed into a powerhouse. He excelled as a two-way lineman, as a shotput and discus thrower and as a wrestler. According to Froman, USC and Arizona were interested in Hernandez but backed off when they learned he wasn’t going to qualify academically. UTEP was the one school that waited for Hernandez, and that decision has paid off: Now 6' 3" and 330 pounds, Hernandez has started every game for the Miners since 2014. Pro Football Focus graded him as its top guard last season after he allowed just one pressure in 380 attempts. UTEP coach Sean Kugler knows a thing or two about the position—his position coach in his playing days at UTEP was Andy Reid, and before Kugler got the head coaching job at his alma mater he was the offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. “He’s an explosive kid who can move and bend,” said Kugler, adding that Hernandez needs to continue to refine his technique and get better with his hands because he relies so much on his strength. I spoke with an NFL scout last week who said Hernandez is the top guard prospect in the country. He doesn’t have great length, but he’s athletic, extremely strong and plays with a mean streak. Hernandez could have gone pro last year, but he promised his grandmother as a high school sophomore that he would graduate college. In December he’ll get his degree in Kinesiology. NFL Matchups in The Title Game (Entering the season, Isaiah Wynn was graded by scouts as a prospect who wouldn’t be drafted or even signed as a free agent after the draft. That’s how poorly the senior was ranked, which is sad considering Wynn has started all but one game for Georgia the past three years. He’s a quality blocker who played left tackle in 2017 after lining up at guard -- the position he’ll play at the next level -- the prior two seasons. Wynn is strong and fundamentally sound and gets the most from his ability. Sources Tell Us (The scoop: "He's what you want from a tackle but he's not even going to come in at (6-foot-3). He'll be a good player for a team who wants athletic guards. You might even see a team draft him as a center since he's stronger than a lot of the centers you will see in this draft." -- NFC area scout on Georgia OT Isaiah Wynn. The skinny: Wynn put together a very strong year of tape and would be considered a really solid tackle prospect if it weren't for his lack of overall length. He plays with good core strength and his hand placement is always on point. That bodes well for him should he move back, as expected, to guard, where he has previously played. While scouts have plenty of tape on Wynn, anytime an offensive line prospect is matched up against Alabama, the O-lineman has a chance to make or lose money and that will be the case with Wynn in the national championship game. Week 14 Risers and Sliders (Isaiah Wynn/OL/Georgia: Wynn has been a favorite of mine since I first scouted him as a sophomore in 2015. After moving to left tackle this season, Wynn has watched his game take off, and his draft stock is surging. He was terrific during the Bulldogs victory over Auburn in the SEC title game, springing ball carriers free for several long runs while helping keep his quarterback upright just about the entire game. Wynn has the build of the offensive lineman and the strength to play at the next level. Though he won’t be able to stay at left tackle in the NFL, Wynn is a solid mid-round pick who could have a long career as a backup or spot starter.) 2018 NFL Draft Stock - Week 8 (Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia: Wynn (6-2, 302) has impressed scouts this season as he has been an excellent run blocker for the Bulldogs. Wynn blocks with aggression and has a temperament that is hard to find in college blockers. In pass protection, he has been very dependable as well.
