NFL Draft: Talented edge rushers will come off the board in a hurry (Key probably is one of the draft’s best pass rushers, but because of the red flags he raised last year, he won’t go as high as other players with similar talent. One of those players is Virginia Tech’s 19-year-old Tremaine Edmunds, who has barely begun to tap into his potential. At 6-foot-4 ½ and 253 pounds, Edmunds has the size-agility combination to project to any LB position in any scheme. He’s also got championship bloodlines. His father, Ferrell, was a third-round draft pick of the Dolphins in 1988 and a two-time Pro Bowl tight end. Tremaine’s brother Terrell, a safety at Virginia Tech, is also at the Combine, and his oldest brother, Trey, is a running back with the Saints. NFL combine preview: Could the Lions take another linebacker in the draft? (Tremaine Edmunds, Virginia Tech: There's been no definitive word on what Detroit's base defense will be under coach Matt Patricia and coordinator Paul Pasqualoni, although if it's anything like Patricia's New England's defense, there might not be any base look at all. The Patriots ran a little of everything based on personnel and matchups, which made them awfully difficult to beat. Of course, running such a versatile system requires the right type of versatile athlete as well. And there might not be a better athlete at linebacker than Edmunds. The 2018 NFL Draft linebacker class is game-changing (Tremaine Edmunds: Edmunds is a very unique linebacker prospect due to his age and sheer size. Edmunds won’t turn 20 years old until May, which means he will only be 19-years-old when he is drafted and will play as a 20-year-old rookie. Edmunds also boasts throwback size for the linebacker position, as he is 6-foot-4, 250-pounds in an era where linebackers are playing in the 220-230 pound range. Edmunds has shown he can line up inside or outside and still produce at a high level. 2018 NFL Draft Stock - Pre-Combine I (Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech: During this past football season and the year before that, Edmunds did not get a lot of media attention for being a high first-round talent. Late last summer, however, NFL scouts were raving to WalterFootball.com about Tremaine Edmunds and his brother Terrell from their play in the 2016 season. When watching the Hokies in 2016, Tremaine Edmunds was impossible to ignore as he was all over the field for them. He recorded 106 tackles with 18.5 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, three passes broken up, one forced fumble and one interception. He stayed consistent in 2017 with 109 tackles with 5.5 sacks, 14 tackles for a loss, two passes batted and three forced fumbles. At 6-foot-5, 236-pounds, Edmunds has excellent size to go with instincts and quickness. He has a versatile skill set for the NFL with the ability play outside linebacker, inside linebacker, and rush off the edge. (6-4, 245, 4.82, #49): Virginia’s Micah Kiser is a smart, productive thumper who will play on Sundays, but with all due respect to him, the best NFL linebacker prospect in the Commonwealth Cup was Virginia Tech’s Edmunds. He finished with nine tackles, including three for loss and a pair of sacks as the Hokies defense held the Cavaliers to under 200 total yards. Edmunds is a terrific athlete, especially for his size, but what truly stands out about his game is his ability to quickly diagnose the play. 2018 NFL Draft Stock - Pre-Combine III (Stock Down - Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest: The 2018 NFL Draft features a weak class of edge rushers, so one would think that Ejiofor would be a sought-after player considering he possess two productive seasons to go with a skill set of size, athleticism and speed. NFL teams, however, don't like how Ejiofor would run hot/cold and believe that his motor was lacking. Ejiofor will miss the combine workout due to his recovery from labrum surgery. That is a blow to Ejiofor as he won't be able to put his big skill set on display to help overcome the doubts about him as a player. In speaking to some sources from pass-rush-needy teams picking high in the second round, they lean toward some other prospects rather than Ejiofor. Scouting the Belk Bowl: Wake Forest vs. Texas A&M (On the Wake Forest side of the ball, linebacker Duke Ejiofor is the team's top prospect. The fifth-year senior enters the game with 38 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks, after missing a game and a half due to injury. He played the edge rusher role and was a daunting task for tackles, running backs and tight ends to take on, standing at 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds. Despite his size, Ejiofor rushes with impressive speed and athleticism. He does a very good job fighting through blockers, not allowing himself to get tangled up or engaged in pursuit of the football. As an outside linebacker in the NFL, Ejiofor will be asked to drop into pass coverage, which he doesn’t have a ton of experience in, but his displays of athleticism lead me to believe he shouldn’t have a problem adapting. As said in our Week 5 Risers and Sliders, Ejiofor needs to improve his ability to stop the run and attack the ball in order to become a more well-rounded prospect. Week 6 Prospect Matchups (Just a few weeks ago, we keyed on Mitch Hyatt and his matchup against Harold Landry of Boston College. During the few instances when the star pass rusher lined up across from the Clemson left tackle, it was Hyatt who got the best of the battle. This week he goes up against unheralded Duke Ejiofor, a Week 5 riser. Ejiofor is not as explosive off the snap when compared to Landry but is just as agile and probably a little better making plays in space. And that is where he could give Hyatt trouble. Ejiofor has been able to generate pressure consistently this season and from both sides of the Demon Deacons’ defense. 2018 NFL Draft Stock - Week 5 (Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest: This is the second straight week that a defensive end who went against Florida State has a stock up. Similar to N.C. State's Bradley Chubb, Ejiofor helped himself with an impressive performance against a weak Florida State offensive line. On his first play from scrimmage, Ejiofor worked down the line to help stuff a run for no gain. Later in the first quarter, he used a swim move to the inside of Brock Ruble to get a tackle for a loss on a third down and force a field goal. That repeated itself on the next possession as Ejiofor fired to the inside of Ruble to get another tackle for a loss. Early in the fourth quarter, Ejiofor used speed to get upfield, but lost his footing with the right tackle pushing him into the turf. Ejiofor didn't quit on the play though, as he got up and chased down quarterback James Blackmon for a sack that turned into a fumble. Ejiofor was a critical contributor as Wake Forest notched 18 tackles for a loss against the Seminoles. Overall, this tape is going to help Ejiofor as he showed good speed at the point of attack with strength to fight off blocks. BYU’s Fred Warner leads list of 2017 breakout NFL draft prospects (DL Rasheem Green, 6-4, 280, 4.93, Southern California, Jr.: With preseason top-rated prospect and Heisman hopeful Darnold drawing virtually all the attention, Green has slid a bit under the radar — at least as much as can be expected for a physically imposing defensive lineman coming off a sophomore campaign in which he led the Trojans with six sacks and the Pac-12 with two blocked kicks. Like a lot of players at USC, Green signed as a highly regarded prep prospect and earned immediate playing time, recording 19 tackles while playing in all 14 games as a true freshman. He started all but the opener against Alabama last season, ultimately recording 55 tackles, including 6.5 for loss. Green is appropriately named as he remains raw with his technique, too often getting stymied at the point of attack despite his agility, length and natural power, which makes him effective as a bull rusher. The point in doing that is to see if they can match the stats to the talent once the competition takes a step up – Trey Hendrickson was the example last year. It was understandable, as he hadn’t been in pads for almost a month. When fully energized, Senat showed a complete game; he was quick, explosive, powerful and fundamentally sound. 2018 NFL Draft prospect watch: Orange Bowl (A vastly-improved all around player, Thomas improved his run defense and pass-rushing in 2017 to the tune of career-highs in pressures, total tackles and run stops, while limiting his missed tackles. Some scouts and teams will fall in love with Thomas' skill set, while others will knock him for not producing up to it. In 2017, Thomas has 30 tackles with 8.5 tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks.
