However, our debate centers on our research that a good coverage player is more valuable than a great pass-rusher, even though it’s easier to predict pass-rush success at the next level. In others words, it’s easier to predict what Young will become, and he looks like he’ll be great. But even if Okudah isn’t as good of a player, he’ll add more to the Lions' defense. Depth at cornerback is one of the strengths of this draft, so trading down makes sense for the Lions.  Make no mistake, Okudah is the best corner in this class, but the Lions can still get a quality replacement for Darius Slay and potentially pick up another top draft pick. If the pick is Okudah, the Lions get a young corner who plays beyond his years and has the ability to see the quarterback and play the receiver. CB Jeff Okudah:  It's do or die time for the Patricia-Quinn show in Detroit (each entering year three of a four-year contract) so that means they will want an immediate impact defender. Okudah allows Detroit to replenish a secondary they've ravaged by trading away two excellent defensive backs who "didn't fit the culture" Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn are trying to create.  35. DE AJ Epenesa:  The Lions want to upgrade at DE on the opposite side of Trey Flowers and Epenesa fits the defensive system well.  39. RB Jonathan Taylor:  Using the extra pick they acquired from the Dolphins, the Lions take the first RB off the board. I see Taylor as the clear-cut RB1 and it's odd that a prospect with his game film -- backed up by his athleticism on display at the combine -- is not a consensus top RB. Taylor needs to work on ball production and route running, but they are coachable. The Lions find their foundation back for the power offense they want to run behind center Frank Ragnow.  67.  QB Jordan Love:  Jordan Love's draft slide finally ends with Detroit. The Lions take a chance on his arm talent, movement skills, and all the raw traits that suggest he has incredible upside if he can process and improve learning under Matt Stafford.  87. Okudah, an elite ball hawk at 6-1, 205 pounds, has the build to handle receivers of all sizes. He is fluid and quick enough with great recovery skills in coverage to develop into a shutdown type with his strengths showing up in press man.  35. DT Marlon Davidson:  After landing Okudah for their secondary, the Lions should turn their attention to reconstructing their defensive front to better support Trey Flowers. Davidson (6-3, 303 pounds) can be a terror rushing the passer from both the interior line and the edge. He has a nice blend of strength, power and quickness to go along with sudden finishing moves.) You draft him to move him all over the place, erase opponents, and tick off opposing offensive coordinators. The Lions are no doubt hoping Chase Young falls. If he doesn’t, Detroit really should take Miami’s Tua offer (or whoever has decided to buck up). Desmond Trufant gives them a reliable veteran replacement, but Okudah is the long-term shutdown guy.  There’s a decent gap between Okudah and the rest of this year’s corner class, and considering how premium of a position it is, it makes him a fantastic value at No. 5 overall. Walterfootball (5.  Detroit Lions - CB Jeff Okudah:  Armando Salguero, one of the top NFL team reporters, said that the Lions are planning as if they have the fifth-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Thus, I'm projecting a trade between Miami and Detroit.  I've flip flopped between Jeff Okudah, Derrick Brown and Isaiah Simmons over the past couple of weeks. I'll be shocked if it's Simmons at this point, but I've edged Okudah over Brown by inches based on some information I gathered on Wednesday evening. It's not rock solid, but it's at least something.  35. RB Jonathan Taylor:  Kerryon Johnson hasn't been able to stay healthy, so I expect Detroit to target a running back in the opening half of the 2020 NFL Draft.  Jonathan Taylor showed surprising athleticism at the combine, which helped mitigate some of the concerns teams have with the workload he handled at Wisconsin.  56.  QB Jordan Love:  The Lions acquired this pick after moving down from No. 3 to 5 in my projected trade.  I've been thinking of places to slot Jordan Love, and I think Detroit makes the most sense. Matthew Stafford can't be trusted to stay healthy, so the Lions need to invest a second-day pick in a young quarterback. The Lions coached Love at the Senior Bowl, so if they liked what they saw in Mobile, they could pull the trigger in Round 2.  Love has a great physical skill set, but he has poor pocket awareness and field vision.  67.  DE Kenny Willekes: The Lions need some edge-rushing help outside of Trey Flowers.  85. DT Neville Gallimore:  The Lions lost some defensive linemen to free agency, so perhaps they'll use the pick they acquired from the Eagles on a replacement.  109.  WR KJ Hill:  The Lions could lose Marvin Jones soon, so they'll likely be interested in drafting a receiver in the middle rounds.  K.J. Hill runs good routes and has great run-after-catch skills.  149. CB Shyheim Carter:  The Lions could address their secondary as early as No. 3 overall with Jeff Okudah. If they trade Darius Slay, they'll need two new corners.  166.  OT Charlie Heck:  The Lions signed a backup tackle to a mega contract this offseason, so they should at least find an insurance policy.  182.  CB Javaris Davis:  Cornerback No. 3 for the Lions makes sense, given that they really have to focus on upgrading the position.  235. Walterfootball Charlie (3. CB Jeff Okudah:  The Lions have the most interesting pick in the first round because of the variety of directions they could go. Since Darius Slay was traded, as expected, Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah would make sense for Detroit, but he is coming off a rough combine performance and some around the league feel he is sliding some. Meanwhile, they lost some veteran defensive tackles and replaced them with limited journeymen, so Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown also makes a lot of sense. Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons could fix a reoccurring problem area, but the Lions added a few veterans to go with their recent early-round picks. It will be fascinating to see which problem Detroit decides to address. I've heard more chatter from team people about the Lions taking Okudah, so I think that is the direction they will go.  Okudah has a great skill set with upside to develop. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder is big, athletic, agile and can run. He is superb at blanketing receivers and preventing separation. Okudah has the entire physical skill set NFL teams hope to find in a No. 1 cornerback, and he put it all together with a dominant 2019 season. The junior totaled 35 tackles with nine passes broken up and three interceptions on the year. Okudah saw some brief action as a freshman, recording 17 tackles and a breakup before playing more as a sophomore. In 2018, he totaled 32 tackles with eight breakups. Okudah's rough combine performance could cause a slight slide, and he has some minor maturity concerns. Still, he profiles as a safe pick to become a good pro. 35. DT Marlon Davidson:  The Lions grab a defensive end/tackle upgrade. Davidson could play end on rush downs and move inside for passing situations.  Team sources say Davidson (6-3, 303) is a solid player who is smart and has good technique. He has developed strength and is a well-balanced defender. Davidson doesn't have an elite skill set, but he found a way to contribute for his defense. He was a big presence on special teams, notching a number of blocked kicks in 2018. Davidson had 49 tackles with 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 2019. In 2018, Davidson had 46 tackles with 4.5 for a loss, 3.5 sacks and three passes broken up.  Davidson could be a base end for a 4-3 defense who moves inside to three-technique in passing situations. He also could transition to being an every-down defensive tackle given his weight gain.  67.  DE Curtis Weaver:  The Lions could use more edge-rush talent across from Trey Flowers.  Weaver was very good for Boise State in 2019, recording 52 tackles, 13.5 sacks, three passes defended and forced fumble. In 2018, Weaver totaled 43 tackles with 15 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks and one forced fumble. He broke out in 2017 as a redshirt freshman and recorded 11 sacks, 33 tackles, two passes broken up and a forced fumble. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Weaver might fit best as a 3-4 outside linebacker given his size and body type.  85.  QB Jacob Eason:  The Lions need a better backup quarterback and a potential long-term starter if Matthew Stafford decides to retire.  In 2019, Eason completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The 6-foot-6, 231-pounder has a powerful arm that can make all the throws and stretch a defense vertically. He can throw fastballs into tight windows to beat good coverage. Eason has quality field vision to work through his progressions and stands tall in the pocket. He is accurate in the short to intermediate part of the field and can make some beautiful throws downfield.  With his limited experience, Eason is a bit raw and needs to show some growth in instincts. He has some things to work on as a passer, including putting more air under the ball on some passes and throwing a softer, more catchable ball. That is a common issue with big-armed quarterbacks. He needs to work on climbing the pocket and not trailing backward as well. While Eason is not a running threat, he can move around some and his size makes him tough to get down.  Eason sat out the 2018 season after transferring out of Georgia. He was injured in the 2017 season opener for Georgia, and Jake Fromm remained the starter for the rest of the season. The Bulldogs didn't want to change their winning formula once Eason was healthy, keeping Eason as the backup. After the 2017 season, Eason transferred to Washington.  At Georgia, Eason got good experience working in an offense under a respected coordinator with Jim Chaney that correlates more to the NFL than the vast majority of college offenses being used. Kirby Smart said one of the sad parts about Eason leaving Georgia was his growth under Chaney wasn't seen nationally. Eason completed 55 percent of his passes in 2016 for 2,430 yards with 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his freshman season. 109. CB Jeff Odukah:  The Lions had the worst pass defense in the league last year which is why Okudah gets the nod over Auburn DT Derrick Brown.  A unanimous five-star recruit coming out of high school, Okudah only had one career start entering his junior season due to the embarrassment of riches the Buckeyes have had at the cornerback position in recent years. Despite that modest experience Okudah was projected to be a Top 10 pick based almost purely on potential. Not only did Okudah live up to those lofty expectations but he surpassed them. A big, fast and athletic cover guy, the physical tools were never in doubt with Okudah. Scouts wanted to see him make more plays in the secondary though and Okudah answered those questions in emphatic fashion. Okudah is arguably the first true shutdown corner to come along since Jalen Ramsey and is a better pro prospect than former teammates Marshon Lattimore (#11 overall in 2017) or Denzel Ward (#4 overall in 2018).  35. Draft Tek (3. CB Jeff Okudah:  Could Detroit actually be considering a Quarterback at #3? There are many who speculate that it's a fathomable option for them, given Matthew Stafford's age, rumors he is frustrated with management, and his injury history. All of the various reasons you've heard circulating over the past few months do add up and make sense, but the ultimate question is, would they actually do it?  Detroit has been a difficult team to read under Bob Quinn throughout his tenure here in the Motor City. We talk at length about his inconsistencies by what he says and does in order to highlight the (perceived) rationale that will go into making their Draft Day selection.  After firing Jim Caldwell, Quinn stated the team was "better" than their record indicated, and that "9-7 was not good enough". Fast forward to present day, and the Lions have not only gotten worse record-wise, but perhaps more delusional, as upper management handed down the "win-now" mandate to a 3-12-1 team. With the team's record having gotten progressively worse after Caldwell's firing, how can the team expect a playoff berth? Does Quinn actually believe the roster is better than the record shows? If so, why not negotiate a deal with Darius Slay to keep him there? Why release both Graham Glasgow and Devon Kennard this past offseason? Perhaps most importantly, what do other teams around the NFL believe about the Detroit Lions' roster as it stands?  Maybe it is all smokescreen and Detroit is looking to find a partner to trade down with, but this requires other teams believing Detroit is in a rebuild. If they don't believe that's true, then they will call Quinn's bluff. Quinn will then have a hard choice to make. Does he believe in the roster or not? It's what makes Draft Day, mock drafts, and speculation so fun, but equally as frustrating to figure out. OG Shane Lemieux:  In an attempt to mitigate the loss of Graham Glasgow this offseason, we have the Lions selecting Oregon Guard, Shane Lemieux. Ideally, the Lions should be looking to acquire more draft picks by trading their #3-overall selection to move down. If they were to acquire at least another RD2 pick, this would make the Lemieux selection even sweeter.  By selecting Lemieux, the Lions will not only fill the void left by Graham Glasgow's departure, but they will also be acquiring a player with some much needed attitude and grit. That's not to say Glasgow did not have these attributes to his game, but he was mostly known for his versatility to play both Guard and Center. While this was a valuable trait for Glasgow, Lemieux will be able to step in on Day One and provide the Lions an opportunity to enhance the Darrell Bevell identity of a "run-first" offense built around play-action. Not only will this toughness and "brute ball" (as Lance Zierlein wrote in his scouting report of Lemieux) help the running game and Kerryon Johnson's production, but it should also help open up the offense --even more so than the early stages of last season where Stafford was having one of the best statistical seasons of his career.
