SI Grade/Tracker (GRADE - B+. Jeff Okudah: No team played more man coverage than the Lions last season, which is a philosophy that head coach Matt Patricia brought over from New England. In that same vein, Patricia also puts a huge emphasis on matchups, having specific corners travel almost everywhere with specific receivers week after week. You must have a true No. 1 corner to consistently do this. What reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore has brought to New England, the Lions hope Okudah will bring to Detroit. He’s a slightly different style of corner than the physical Gilmore; what scouts liked most about Okudah is he has the agility to mirror wide receivers. The Lions, who like to have multiple safeties helping in coverage, often instruct their corners to play in the low hip pocket of their man. Okudah shined with that at Ohio State. The only negative here is Detroit GM Bob Quinn probably felt he could get a quality corner a few picks later in the draft, but he did not get an enticing enough package to trade down. In fact, Okudah is the reason why this grade isn't an O'Brien. However, this is very close to a failure. The Lions could've obtained Okudah at No. 5 overall. They should have at least obtained something for moving down two spots, even if it was just a fifth-round pick. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound corner will help fill the gap left by Darius Slay, who was traded to Philadelphia this offseason. Detroit Lions 2020 NFL draft analysis for every pick (3. CB Jeff Okudah - My take: This was the pick that always seemed to make the most sense for the Lions. Okudah is the top cornerback on the board. On a team that traded Darius Slay to Philadelphia last month and then signed Desmond Trufant in free agency, there was still a hole for a starting corner opposite Trufant and now the Lions have a player who should transition into a No. 1 corner sooner than later. General manager Bob Quinn never had an issue taking a corner this early, saying he wasn't sure why teams avoided corners in the top five. "It's obviously critical [as a position] and has high value in the league," Quinn said last week. "Really, when you look at corners, basically you have three corners that are starters in professional football now." Detroit added one to go with Trufant and Justin Coleman at No. 3 in the draft. Bucking history: Okudah becomes the 28th defensive back to be selected in the top five in the NFL draft and the first since Denzel Ward went to Cleveland at No. 4 in 2018. The last three defensive backs to go that high have all become stars: Ward, Jalen Ramsey and Patrick Peterson. He's the first defensive back to go in the top three since Shawn Springs went to Seattle in 1997. Springs ended up having a 13-year career. The history is good, too. Eric Berry, Sean Taylor, Quentin Jammer, Charles Woodson, Bryant Westbrook and Terence Newman were top-five picks since 1997. How he fits: Matt Patricia prefers physical corners who can thrive in man-to-man and pressing opposing receivers. It fits perfectly into Okudah's skillset. He was a lockdown cornerback at Ohio State and often stuck to receivers. Opposing quarterbacks completed only 39 percent of passes against him last year and held opponents to an opposing QBR of 14.2. 2020 NFL draft live updates: Pros and cons for every first-round pick (3. Okudah - Why they picked him: Cornerback is Detroit's biggest need after the trade of Darius Slay to Philadelphia. While the Lions signed CB Desmond Trufant in free agency and feel good about the long-term prospects of Amani Oruwariye, Okudah has the potential to be a shutdown corner sooner than later. He can be a man-press corner, which fits coach Matt Patricia's defense. He also has good speed (4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the scouting combine, 12th among all corners) and closing ability to stay with almost any receiver. He's as ready to play right away as any corner in the draft, and at a position where rookies usually struggle. Biggest question: While he's in a better position than most corners coming into the league, it will still be an adjustment. Without offseason workouts against wide receivers Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr., it could be a situation in which Okudah will be learning on the fly throughout portions of the season. He can play in any scheme you ask, but my goodness is he stingy in press-man coverage. Okudah allowed under half a yard per coverage snap in press coverage in 2019 and didn’t allow a single explosive play (both of which are by far the best marks in the 2020 draft class). As we at PFF have said in the past, Okudah is the Michelangelo’s David of cornerbacks. Detroit Lions: Jeffrey Okudah, CB, Ohio State( Pauline’s Ranking: #4 (CB01) | Scouting Report, PFN Consensus: #2 (CB01) | RAS: 8.97): Pauline: The first three picks have fallen in line as expected. Despite a desperation to trade down, the Lions found no takers and Okudah makes the most sense here. He fits a need, comes with terrific ball skills and has tremendous upside. The issues in Okudah’s game are minor and I would expect him to be a day one starter. DiCecco: The Lions sent their best cover man to Philadelphia, and while they signed Desmond Trufant in free agency and are reportedly high on 2019 fifth-rounder Amani Oruwariye, they need to add a premier player at the position. Auburn’s Derrick Brown would have made sense here as well to upgrade the interior defensive line, but Okudah gives them a blue-chip talent on the perimeter to handle the likes of Davante Adams, Adam Thielen, and Allen Robinson twice a year.
