Sporting News (3. CB Jeff Okudah:  The Lions moved Darius Slay in a trade with the Eagles and signed Desmond Trufant to replace him, but they need to address the other outside corner spot. Okudah, an elite ball hawk at 6-1, 205 pounds, has the build to handle receivers of all sizes. He is fluid and quick enough with great recovery skills in coverage to develop into a shutdown type with his strengths showing up in press man.  35. DE Yetur Gross-Matos:  The Lions need more defensive line punch and tapping into the other Lions to better complement Trey Flowers at end is a good value pick. Gross-Matos (6-5, 266 pounds) is a well-built, explosive and versatile defender made to be disruptive in a hybrid scheme such as Matt Patricia's.  67. DT Justin Madubuike:  The Lions can keep working on defense after addressing cornerback and edge rush well earlier in this mock. Madubuike (6-3, 293 pounds) won't be confused with the giants at the position, but he has a great combination of power and quickness. He uses his lower body to gain leverage against the run.  85. G Jonah Jackson:  The Lions need to get more athletic inside after losing Graham Glasgow. Jackson (6-3, 306 pounds is a unique prospect because he is a pure pass-protecting interior blocker. The Lions still have a massive hole opposite newly acquired Desmond Trufant left by Darius Slay that Okudah can fill. On 31 targets in man coverage last year, Okudah allowed only 15 catches for 178 yards and one score.  26.  OT AUSTIN JACKSON, USC:  The Lions gain this pick in the trade for No. 3 overall and add to an offensive line that saw a couple of key departures this offseason. They gave Halapoulivaati Vaitai a big contract, but it’s really a short-term commitment and he can kick inside to guard. Jackson isn’t even 21 years old yet and earned pass-blocking grades of 78.4 and 78.8 the past two seasons.  35. AJ Epenesa:  Epenesa’s Combine numbers may scare teams away, but his fall will be some lucky team's gain. He racked up a 31.5% win rate on 54 pass-rush snaps from the interior last season.  67.  DT Raekwon Davis:  Davis is a classic 2-gapping interior player perfect to sit on the interior of the Lions' line. They add massive reinforcements to their defense with their first three picks.  85. OT Robert Hunt:  With their glaring needs already addressed, the Lions go back to the well at offensive line and continue their focus on the trenches. Left guard Joe Dahl doesn’t match their physical run-blocking style, but the 330-plus pound Hunt and his 86.0 run-blocking grade last year do.) Walterfootball (6.  Detroit Lions - CB Jeff Okudah:  "As of this very moment, the Lions need a talented cornerback to play across from Darius Slay." I wrote this prior to free agency, and now the Lions need a talented cornerback to play across from Desmond Trufant, as Trufant was signed prior to Slay being traded to the Eagles.  Jeff Okudah is a big, athletic, speedy cornerback with immense upside. He's a bit stiff, but that's commonplace from tall cornerbacks.  35. LB Zach Baun:  The Lions need an edge rusher to go along with Trey Flowers, as they'll need to improve their ability to get to Aaron Rodgers to overtake the Packers.  Zack Baun has size limitations (6-3, 238), but he was very productive at Wisconsin.  37.  RB JK Dobbins:  This is one of the picks the Lions received from the Chargers in my proposed trade in the first round.  Kerryon Johnson hasn't been able to stay healthy, so I expect Detroit to target a running back in the opening half of the 2020 NFL Draft.  J.K. Dobbins entered 2017 as a backup, but overtook Mike Weber and had a terrific freshman campaign, showing off his great, explosive running ability.  67. QB Jacob Eason: Matthew Stafford has some serious injury risk issues, so the Lions would be wise to select a potential successor in case Stafford pulls an Andrew Luck and retires unexpectedly.  85. DT Marlon Davidson:  The Lions lost some defensive linemen to free agency, so perhaps they'll use the pick they acquired from the Eagles on a replacement.  109. DE Josh Uche:  The Lions lost Devon Kennard this offseason, so they could select two edge rushers this April.  Josh Uche is an undersized player, but he's fast and talented.  149. CB Shyheim Carter:  The Lions could address their secondary as early as No. 3 overall with Jeff Okudah. If they trade Darius Slay, they'll need two new corners.  166.  LB Evan Weaver:  The Lions could strengthen their linebacking corps as early as No. 3 overall with Isaiah Simmons.  182.  LB Shaquille Quarterman:  The Lions need as much help in the middle of their defense as possible.  235. Draft Tek (6. CB Jeff Okudah:  This mock draft is based off of a live draft simulation undertaken by Drafttek analysts on April 4. Acting as the proxy GM, the Lions did find a trade partner in the Los Angeles Chargers and moved down from #3 to #6 overall. The move helped both teams, as Detroit acquired more draft picks (Los Angeles' 37th and 186th overall), while still grabbing a player most often mocked to them. Ohio State's Jeffrey Okudah will provide instantaneous lockdown defense on his side of the field and to better illustrate this, Okudah only allowed six 15+ yard gains to opposing WRs in over 400 coverage snaps in his collegiate career. Crazy right? He's an amazing player and Detroit is a benefactor of the market being QB-thirsty, as well as teams not valuing cornerbacks as high as Detroit does. Adding to this, Okudah will be surrounded by a veteran presence on defense. He'll not have to be relied upon to make this immediate impact we all expect him to, he will be allowed to "play his game" while also learning and adjusting to the speed of the NFL.  - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst Analyst.  35. OG Shane Lemieux:  As the Lions let go of Graham Glasgow (now with the Denver Broncos) there is still somewhat of a hole on the right side of the o-line for Detroit. The addition of Halapoulivaati Vaitai surely helps matters, but it by no means gives Lions' fans any sense of comfort, given that Vatai was not even a starter with Philadelphia. With help from the Los Angeles Chargers via swapping picks, the Lions' front office has some security in taking Guard Shane Lemieux here in order to address that hole left by Glasgow.  NFL Media's Lance Zeirlien said of Lemieux likes to "play brute ball in the trenches" and that's actually a great depiction of Lemieux's style. A power, tough-nosed lineman that will surely be able to replicate that of Glasgow's game. However, Glasgow's versatility is a hard thing to replace, Lemieux should step in and be a nice young piece that could invigorate an o-line that personally, needs a little more attitude and identity to it.  - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst.  37.  LB Patrick Queen:  Isaiah Simmons is good, maybe too good. However, if you can trade down from the #3 overall selection, acquire Jeffrey Okudah AND Patrick Queen and get two for the price of one? It'd be considered a steal. Patrick Queen is a remarkably gifted athlete and while Detroit did address the linebacker position during Free Agnecy by bringing in Jamie Collins, Elijah Lee, and Reggie Ragland, they still have question marks surrounding Jarrad Davis. Patrick Queen could be a nice piece for Patricia here given Queen's ability to hang with larger tight ends and easily cover running backs slipping out into screens or lining up a receivers. The knock on Queen is being "undersized", but for me, the old adage rings true, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but it's the size of the fight in the dog that matters most. Here's a really nice video on Twitter showing Queen's aggressiveness and his instincts, something that Devon Kennard proivded this defense, but somehow found himself released to start the Lions' offseason. Touchdown Wire Doug Farrar (3.  DE Chase Young:  Washington picking Jeff Okudah gives the Lions an interesting choice with the third pick, though Matt Patricia needs cornerbacks right now just as much as Ron Rivera does. After trading Darius Slay to the Eagles for a pittance, Detroit has Desmond Trufant and Justin Coleman as its primary players at that position. Either Patricia and the rest of Detroit’s draft room will have to over-pick a defensive back, trade down, or take Chase Young and make the pass rush a whole lot better. Young would do that — he has nearly every attribute required to play his position at the highest level, and even during the three-game sackless streak at the end of his collegiate career, he was still making and preventing plays.) Walterfootball Charlie (3. CB Jeff Okudah:  The Lions have the most interesting pick in the first round because of the variety of directions they could go. Since Darius Slay was traded, as expected, Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah would make sense for Detroit, but he is coming off a rough combine performance. Meanwhile, A'Shawn Robinson and Mike Daniels are entering free agency and Snacks Harrison was cut, so Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown also makes a lot of sense. It will be fascinating to see which problem Detroit decides to address.  Okudah has a great skill set with upside to develop. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder is big, athletic, agile and can run. He is superb at blanketing receivers and preventing separation. Okudah has the entire physical skill set NFL teams hope to find in a No. 1 cornerback, and he put it all together with a dominant 2019 season. The junior totaled 35 tackles with nine passes broken up and three interceptions on the year. Okudah saw some brief action as a freshman, recording 17 tackles and a breakup before playing more as a sophomore. In 2018, he totaled 32 tackles with eight breakups. Okudah's rough combine performance could cause a slight slide, but after his pro day and other workouts, he could rise back up boards. 35. QB Jordan Love:  The Lions have extra picks on Day 2 to address needs and could use one on an understudy to Mathew Stafford. Here's a big-armed quarterback who would provide continuity for the offense.  In 2019, Love completed 62 percent of his passes for 3,402 yards with 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He had some buzz about being a pro prospect coming off his 2018 season, when he completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,567 yards with 32 touchdowns and six interceptions.  As a pro prospect, Love has some good tools to work with. He has a strong arm and can fire some lasers downfield and to the sideline. He also shows the ability to put air under the ball and throw touch passes. Lofting in passes between defenders and throwing receivers open can be tough for strong-armed quarterbacks as they can become too reliant on fast balls. Love does not have that issue. His pocket presence is developed, and he has some mobility to move around as well.  However, Love still has a lot to work on, with his field vision being painfully bad. He consistently locks his eyes on his primary read and does not move them away. He stares down targets and does not look off defenders. Love must start reading the field, working through his progressions, and making better decisions. Some team evaluators also said that his accuracy and turnovers were problems. Team sources felt that Love should have returned for his senior year to improve before going to the NFL, but he declared for the 2020 NFL Draft. One team source said they had a fourth-/fifth-round grade on Love. Two other teams said they graded him as a third/fourth-rounder, but Love only needs one team to fall in love and take him in the early rounds and make it financially worth it to come out even though it was a move that increases his potential of being a bust.  67.  DE Josh Uche:  The Lions could use more edge-rush talent across from Trey Flowers.  Uche had 35 tackles with 8.5 sacks, two passes batted and two forced fumbles in 2019. The 6-foot-1, 241-pounder was a fast and dangerous edge rusher over the past two seasons, but he is very undersized for the NFL. As a pro, he would fit best as a designated pass-rusher, and playing in a 3-4 scheme would probably be the best spot for him. Uche had only 15 tackles during the 2018 season, but seven of those were sacks as he was a dangerous pass-rusher for the Wolverines.  85. DT Neville Gallimore:  The Lions need more young talent on the inside of their line.  Gallimore recorded 30 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles in 2019. Team sources say Gallimore is an athletic tackle with some twitch. In 2018, he had 50 tackles with 5.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and one pass batted. Gallimore (6-2, 304) is a penetrating disruptor who would fit best in a 4-3 as a three-technique who could also play some nose tackle. Some evaluators have compared Gallimore to former Buccaneer Booger McFarland or current Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. They say teams would want more pass-rush ability out of Gallimore to become an every-down starter in the NFL, so they see him more as a second-day prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft. 109. RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire:  One of our favorite players in this draft class. Detroit is in win-now mode and CEH's versatility facilitates that.  67.  DE Julian Okwara:  Okwara suffered a leg injury that cut short his 2019 season but he's only going to get better. Related: he joins his brother in Detroit.  85.  CB Amik Robertson:  Robertson is 5-foot-8 but he plays much much bigger than that. He'll find a home immediately in the slot and he'll likely have success early too.  109.  WR Devin Duvernay:  Duvernay has a track background and runs like a running back. He'll make life easier for Matthew Stafford.  149. S Julian Blackmon:  Another defensive back for Matt Patricia to improve Detroit's defense.  166.  Darryl Williams:  Protecting Matthew Stafford is priority No. 1 in 2020.  182. The good news is that the Redskins' decision to take Tua frees up the best defensive player in the draft for the Lions. This is a no-brainer, unless someone offers a haul to move up for Young.  31. QB Jacob Eason:  This is still Matthew Stafford's team. But Stafford's cap hit climbs to $33 million in 2021. And his timeline probably doesn't fit the Lions' window. Stafford can start in 2020 while Eason waits his turn. There's a chance Eason would be available at No. 35, but the Lions don't risk another team taking him ahead of them. Meanwhile, the 49ers already got their WR at No. 13. Now, they get a couple extra picks to slide back only a few spots.) Detroit Lions (via trade with Los Angeles Chargers) -- OSU CB Jeff Okudah:  Okudah was dominant at Ohio State and is the top cornerback prospect in this draft and recent memory.  In a first-round pick swap with the Chargers, the Lions should be able to add a couple of mid-round picks in 2020 and 2021. Adding another second-round pick near the top of the order would be a massive win for a team already in possession of four of the first 85 selections. There are glaring needs on the interior of the offensive line, and not to mention the chance to cash in on a highly-touted wide receiver class. Scooping up the top cornerback while adding depth would be a vital step in the right direction.  Okudah makes too much sense. The Lions allowed the most passing yards in the NFL last season, and then parted ways with former All-Pro corner Darius Slay. Okudah fits the system as a lanky, athletic corner than can stuff receivers up in the press and stick with them until the whistle blows.  The Ohio State star didn’t allow a single catch of more than 12 yards on 184 snaps in press coverage last season. He slides in nicely next to recent-addition Desmond Trufant, slot corner Justin Coleman and the developing Amani Oruwariye. It might get repetitive seeing his name tied to the Lions in the majority of mocks at this point, but Okudah is the right pick at the right place to the right team.) CB Jeff Odukah:  The Lions had the worst pass defense in the league last year, which is why Okudah gets the nod over Auburn DT Derrick Brown.  A unanimous five-star recruit coming out of high school, Okudah only had one career start entering his junior season due to the embarrassment of riches the Buckeyes have had at the cornerback position in recent years. Despite that modest experience Okudah was projected to be a Top 10 pick based mostly on potential. Not only did Okudah live up to those lofty expectations, he surpassed them. A big, fast and athletic cover guy, the physical tools were never in doubt with Okudah. Scouts wanted to see him make more plays in the secondary though and Okudah answered those questions in emphatic fashion. Okudah is arguably the first true shutdown corner to come along since Jalen Ramsey and is a better pro prospect than former teammates Marshon Lattimore (#11 overall in 2017) or Denzel Ward (#4 overall in 2018).) Rotoworld Thor Nystrom  (3. LB Isaiah Simmons:  I refuse to list Simmons as a linebacker – he’s a defensive weapon. You don’t draft him to play a traditional off-ball role. You draft him to move him all over the place, erase opponents, and tick off opposing offensive coordinators. The Lions are no doubt hoping Chase Young falls. If he doesn’t, Detroit really should take Miami’s Tua offer (or whoever has decided to buck up). Because the Lions don’t have one defensive need, they have a pride of them.  You wouldn’t argue with Jeffrey Okudah here, but Simmons’ ability to be deployed off-ball, on the edge, in the slot, and at safety feels like a better fit in a two-for-one special kind of way.  35. Mississippi State CB Cam Dantzler:  A long, explosive, suffocating corner from the SEC who figures to rise during the process. Dantzler (6’2/185) is skinny, but he’s an aggressive, fight-you-for-it type made for press coverage. He’d be a target of mine if I needed a corner early in Round 2. I wouldn’t wait much longer. Dantzler has enough high-level tape against top-notch competition that he shouldn’t drop outside the top-40, lack of hype right now notwithstanding.  67.  Michigan EDGE Josh Uche:  The Lions, in need of edge help, shop local with Uche, who piled up 25 hurries, 13 hurries and eight sacks in 206 pass-rushing attempts last year. That was good for an elite 91.4 PFF pass-rushing grade. Uche will drop a little because of size limitations (6’1/241), a foot fracture and torn meniscus in his past, and a game that is overly-reliant on athleticism over technical know-how.)
