Mock Draft Roundup #6

Walterfootball Charlie (11.  DT Christian Barmore - Detroit passed on Derrick Brown for Jeff Okudah, and the early returns on that decision have not been good. Brown is playing well for Carolina, while Okudah has struggled somewhat. The Lions still need help on the inside of their defensive line, and they should target a tackle capable of putting pressure on the quarterback. Barmore has recorded 22 tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles and three passes batted in 2020. He has been a dangerous interior pass rusher capable of putting consistent heat on the quarterback. His run defense, however, needs work for the NFL. Barmore flashed ability as part of Alabama's rotation in 2019, recording 26 tackles and two sacks. It was only his redshirt freshman season, so he could develop and become more well-rounded as he gains experience. Some team sources are high on him, while others want to see him become a more well-rounded player and a better run defender before they project him to be a high first-rounder. Hence, he might end up being more of a mid-first-round pick. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Barmore has good size with length at the point of attack to go along with quickness and athleticism, so if he works out well he could rise.  43.  DE Dayo Odeyingbo:  The Lions need more edge rushers and linebacker talent. Here's the latter.  Odeyingbo totaled 32 tackles with 5.5 sacks and a pass batted in 2020. He has played better than the numbers illustrate and has produced steady pressure on the quarterback. The 6-foot-6, 276-pound Odeyingbo is strong at the point of attack with enough power to bull his way into the pocket and hold his ground in run defense. With his quality first-step and a second gear to get upfield, Odeyingbo can use a speed rush to put heat on the quarterback. Odeyingbo is making himself look like a potential second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft this season.) (12-18-20):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2021charlie.php

Yahoo (11. Detroit Lions - Alabama WR Jaylen Waddle:  Here’s another “who will be GM and head coach?” situation. Also, is Matthew Stafford in the picture? If the Lions end up being bent on trading him amid a rebuild, that would dramatically change this scenario.  Almost certainly, wide receiver is an area of concern. Kenny Golladay is a pending free agent whose price tag could be massive. Marvin Jones is, too. It’s almost certain at least one of them won’t be back.  Watch Nick Saban somehow convince Waddle, who is out for the season with an ankle injury, to come back to Bama in 2021. He did it with DeVonta Smith.  But in this scenario, he’d step into a big role for the Lions and be a blur on that Ford Field turf.):  https://sports.yahoo.com/2021-nfl-mock-draft-4-quarterbacks-go-in-top-7-overall-picks-140635174.html

CBS Edwards (11. QB Trey Lance:  Detroit and Atlanta are facing a similar situation. Both franchises are welcoming new head coaches with the presence of an aging quarterback on the roster. Trey Lance, a Minnesota native, could wait in the wings for a year if Detroit wants to give Matthew Stafford another year to bring that dead cap space down. Lance could use some time to develop anyway.) Walterfootball (9.  Carlos Basham, DE:  The Lions need to address every position on defense, and this includes the front line, which took a hit with some offseason losses prior to 2020.  Carlos Basham always stuffed the run well, but his pass rush improved tremendously from 2018 to 2019.  43. CB Shaun Wade:  The Lions have serious problems at cornerback, so they may use a second-day pick on the position.  Shaun Wade has a ton of upside and was able to produce well in the slot in 2019. He has struggled this year, however.) (12-16-20):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2021.php

CBS Trapasso (11.  LB Micah Parsons:  The Lions could go in 1,000 different directions with this pick but ultimately decide on the best player available at a non-QB position. Parsons would help reinvigorate the defense.) Draft Tek (11. WR Jaylen Waddle: The Darrell Bevell era now stands at 1-1 and despite the loss this past Sunday to Green Bay, the Lions seem to be playing with more juice than with the previous leadership. "This is an opportunity for all of us", said Bevell. "Whether it's going to be on this team, whether it's another team, people are watching. They want to see how the Detroit Lions are going to react, if they're just going to throw in the towel or if they're going to keep fighting". In my time covering the Detroit Lions here at DraftTek and even watching from afar as a fan, it's been a long time since I heard a Lions Head Coach, especially an interim, say anything non-cliche and it's refreshing.  To Bevell's point, it's a reality. That's the situation the organiztion finds themselves in. Optimally, the franchise should tank, seeking a better chance at an immediate-impact prospect for the new regime, but the reality is, these players and coaches are professionals and this is their job. We can't expect them to lie down and not put up a fight for 2021. In all honesty, most of us didn't think there would even be football this season and it's obvious the players and the coaches know this and they want to seize every opportunity that presents itself. Whether that means they're Lions in 2021 or elsewhere, there's always something to prove.  Whether or not the Lions do make a miraculous run and reach the postseason, I believe it's a noteworthy observation that this team hasn't quit on Bevell. It's refreshing to see the players and the coaches understand what's at stake, that it's not about this season, it's about what happens next season. It's actually something that new Special Assistant and former Detroit Lion, Chris Spielman, hit home in his press conference by repeatedly citing, "creating a culture" and "having an identity", focusing on "good communication", and creating a "servant mentality" among teammates.  It seems as though the organization is admitting its own mistake by attempting at copying another organization's culture (New England Patriots) and is now beginning to move in its own, custom, direction. Hiring former players (Spielman and Sanders) to assist in the next Head Coach and GM search is an attempt to do just that. They know what this city has been through; they understand the pressure the organization is under to win and win now, but for me, it all comes back to Darrell Bevell setting the tone from Day 1. Whether he stays, whether the Lions win out, whether they lose every game from this point forward, it seems as though Bevell's mentality helped set the stage for ownership to seek like-minded "football guys", something Rod Wood and Shiela Ford Hamp have admittedly stated they are not. Color me crazy, but I'm actually excited to see what happens next with this franchise. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst)  43. LB Joseph Ossai.  75.  WR Anom-Ra St. Brown  106.  QB Mac Jones.  138.  WR Damon Hazelton) (12-16-20):  https://www.drafttek.com/2021-NFL-Draft-Team-Pages/Lions-Draft-Page.asp

CBS Wilson (9.  LB Micah Parsons:  Parsons opted out but he's another player who didn't hurt his draft stock by doing so. He might end up being the best standup linebacker to come out in the last 4-5 years.) SN (12. Detroit Lions (5-7) - WR Ja'Marr Chase:  The Lions will need to replenish at wide receiver opposite Kenny Golladay with Marvin Jones Jr. heading into free agency for his age 31 season. Chase, opting out of LSU's season, is coming off a big final season with Burrow (84 catches, 1,780 yards, 20 TDs) and would be an excellent additional big playmaker to pair with Matthew Stafford.) (12-8-20):   https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2021-49ers-steelers-cowboys-eagles/1ilrmark1c41x19bojxe7nu19k

Foxsports Mcintyre (12. Detroit Lions – Patrick Surtain, CB, Alabama (7) - 2020 season stats: 2 sacks, 16 total tackles:  They have no GM or coach, so the future of the franchise is up in the air. For now, we’ll go best-on-board. Detroit is stacked with talent on offense and defense, but the schemes didn’t fit the talent. If Robert Saleh is the new coach, we know he’ll lobby to fortify the secondary, which ranked 28th in efficiency.) PFN Tony Pauline (9. Detroit Lions: Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota:   The Lions have several good receivers but no true No. 1. Rashod Bateman solves that problem.) (12-2-20):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2021-nfl-mock-draft-tony-pauline-december/

USA Today Middle-Hurst Schwartz (11. Lions — Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama: Even if Detroit brings back Kenny Golladay on a hefty extension, bolstering the receiving corps should remain a point of emphasis. Prior to having his season cut short by a broken ankle, Waddle established himself as college football's pre-eminent big-play threat by record 22.3 yards per reception.) PFF Renner (13. ED JAYSON OWEH, PENN STATE:  At 6-foot-5 and 252 pounds with a reported sub-4.4 40, Oweh personifies the term “freak.” That gets drafted highly at the edge position regardless of how you perform on the football field. Oweh has improved in the latter, as he had a breakout 10-pressure performance in Penn State’s Big Ten opener against Indiana.)
