Tank for Trevor: Which NFL teams are in the lead to draft Trevor Lawrence after Week 12? (Detroit Lions: They’re currently No. 9, but they’re up here because they’re a mess, having just fired Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn. Also, their remaining schedule is tough: they get the Patriots, Raiders, Rams, Seahawks and Browns the rest of the way.): https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-draft-trevor-lawrence-power-rankings-week-12
The NFL's 2021 All-Free Agent Team: The Offense: https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/2021-nfl-free-agents-dak-prescott-allen-robinson-trent-williams/
$.10 After NFL Week 12 ($.01--The Detroit Lions got their annual NFL spotlight game with the Thanksgiving Day special. As is the long-running custom, Detroit hosted the first game on Thanksgiving. As is also the growing custom, they lost in humiliating fashion to the three-win Houston Texans. The Lions kept the spotlight burning a little longer, however. On Saturday, owner Sheila Ford Hamp threw out the rotten leftovers from Thanksgiving and fired GM Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia. Speaking for all Lions fans--and media--everywhere, it was time. The joyous reaction on social media crowns any positive moment the team has experienced in the last 28 years, the one and only time in the Super Bowl era the Lions won a playoff game. Quinn and Patricia deliberately morphed a competitive, tight-knit but flawed veteran team into the slowest, quietest, most uninteresting NFL product. That can work if you’re winning, but the Lions were not winning and are trending badly in the other direction. This was a team built to win in 2019 and instead they went 3-12-1. Being 4-7 wasn’t enough progress for Ford Hamp’s liking, nor should it have been. Whoever takes over the Lions does not have an easy job. Matthew Stafford is 32 and isn’t as sharp in 2020 as he has been in recent healthy seasons. The top 4 wide receivers are all pending free agents. The defense is purposely constituted of big-and-slow in a league where the offenses are increasingly small-and-fast. There is talent but it’s been misused and has a finite ceiling without any true difference-makers or All-Pros anywhere on the roster. This is a franchise that absolutely cannot hire a rookie GM. My early, personal favorites for the Lions: Thomas Dimitroff as GM and Marvin Lewis as head coach.): https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3320/$10-After-NFL-Week-12
FMIA Week 12: COVID Wreaks Havoc On The NFL, But What Did We Expect? (13. Nothing should be off the table for the moribund Lions, including divorcing Matthew Stafford. I’m not positive it should happen, but it’s crazy to say to new coach/GM candidates: You’ve got to keep Stafford. Stafford has a $10-million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the 2021 league year. His 2021 cap number is $34.95 million, which is 20 percent of the projected $175-million NFL salary cap in 2021. By cutting or trading Stafford, Detroit would incur in 2021 a dead cap hit of $24.85 million, which obviously must be considered. This must also be considered: The Lions have not won a division title in Stafford’s 12 seasons.
The Lions have not won a playoff game—nor hosted one—in Stafford’s 12 seasons.
The Lions appear headed for their third straight fourth-place finish in the NFC North, and their seventh straight year outside of the NFL’s top-10 yardage teams.
The simple fact is that sometimes in football, a franchise needs to be blown up. The Patriots did it in 2000, and Drew Bledsoe, the highest-paid player in football at the time, was gone a little more than a year later. The Ravens did it in 2007, a year after going 13-3 with the stable Brian Billick scotch-taping the QB position together. Carolina did it in the past year, dumping Ron Rivera and Cam Newton in a matter of months. Those are anecdotal stories. But they are also proof that if something just feels wrong, why continue to try to make it work? Break free. Start over. At least look at the possibilities. The Lions have not won a playoff game in 29 years. That point shouldn’t have much to do with a decision on Stafford. But on a team with holes as deep as the one Detroit has dug, nothing should be off the table.): https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/11/30/nfl-week-12-covid-fmia-peter-king/
MMQB: Kendall Hinton Plays Emergency QB in Wild Week 12 (The writing was on the wall for Matt Patricia in Detroit eight days ago, after the Lions were blanked in Carolina. Then it became a matter not of if, but of when. There was more of a decision to make on GM Bob Quinn. So why the clean sweep? The team knows it needs to get the organization aligned, and part of the problem has been a reluctance to start over with a new GM and coach arriving together. The last time the team did that was 19 years ago, when it hired Matt Millen as de facto GM and Marty Mornhinweg as coach. One other thing I think will be important in Detroit is detailing the GM’s responsibilities. That sounds basic, I know. But I think it will help the Lions to define exactly what they’re looking for—all-encompassing boss, or head of football scouting—to fill that job. My belief is Quinn was stretched a little thin in the job and might not have been suited to the non-scouting parts of it.): https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/11/30/mmqb-week-12-kendall-hinton-denver-broncos
