PFN Schulte (29. Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson:  Nate Wiggins‘ weight will be a cause for concern for some teams, but his talent level as a man coverage corner is tough to ignore. Detroit is signaling a move towards being a predominantly man-heavy team and needs to continue bolstering its secondary to be able to do so.  61.  Chris Braswell, EDGE, Alabama:  Detroit’s defense is missing that extra three-down pass rusher for that unit to take the next step. Chris Braswell boasts excellent power to collapse the pocket and uses his length to get off blocks with ease.  He would be the perfect complement to Aidan Hutchinson.  73. Mason McCormick, OG, South Dakota State:  Detroit did sign Kevin Zeitler to lock up its starting interior for 2024. Still, the long-term outlook of that unit is up in the air with Zeitler on a one-year deal and center Frank Ragnow battling numerous injuries that saw him contemplating retirement.  Mason McCormick is a tough, physical guard who can play center and guard in the NFL.  164. Wire Editors (29. DT Johnny Newton, Illinois:  The Lions brought in veteran nose tackle D.J. Reader to play next to rising star Alim McNeill on the defensive interior. They can still use more firepower, and Newton offers just that. His ability to attack between the tackles and finish plays is a real plus for Detroit. With guys like Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeil already on the defensive line, Robinson would have one-on-one opportunities where his speed is more of a threat.) SI Easterling (29.  DE Laiatu Latu:  Aidan Hutchinson is already one of the most dominant edge defenders in the NFL, but the Lions need an upgrade on the other side of the defensive front. Medical concerns could keep Latu on the board longer than his pure talent might suggest, but if he's able to stay healthy, he could be a massive steal for Detroit at this point.  61. PFN Broback (29. Tyler Nubin, S, Minnesota:  Detroit has an exciting defense, and now they’re looking to upgrade the talent level at certain positions. The secondary struggled at times last year, but that can be fixed in the draft.  Tyler Nubin was Minnesota’s big-time playmaker for the past couple of seasons, and his ball skills make him a potential first-rounder. While he didn’t see the spotlight much due to the Gophers’ team struggles, Nubin will find that life in the NFL will give him the attention he deserves.) Despite his lean frame, Kamari Lassiter has the long-strider speed and acceleration to limit route separation, which the Lions need at cornerback.) USA Today Davis (29. WR Adonai Mitchell, Texas:  How about just one more playmaker for this offense? Mitchell is plenty big (6-2, 205) and exceptionally fast (4.34 40 time), a combo that could nicely complement WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, who continues to struggle while trying to justify his first-round billing from 2022. Walter football Walt (29. Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB:  The Lions wanted Devon Witherspoon at No. 6, so perhaps they’ll obtain a cornerback with this pick.  Kool-Aid McKinstry was a rare freshman starter for Nick Saban. He has the size and athleticism to be an elite cornerback.  61. Detroit Lions: Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  The Lions have a great offensive line, save for right guard. That could be addressed with this pick.  Layden Robinson isn’t very athletic, but he’s a violent blocker who has impressed this season.  73.  Max Melton, CB:  Here’s another cornerback for the Lions, who really need to address their secondary.  Max Melton is a terrific athlete who is incredibly fast that receivers can’t outrun him.) PFN Tate (29. Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia:  The Detroit Lions’ addition of Carlton Davis III does bring a starting caliber corner into the folds for the team’s secondary. However, the team still could use a potential upgrade to either him or an insurance policy for Emmanuel Moseley, who is recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season.  Georgia’s Kamari Lassiter is a rock-solid football player with quality footwork, disciplined hands when attempting to reroute receivers, and quality run support traits that all project to a multi-year starter in the NFL.) Draft Network Fowler (29. Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas:  Adonai Mitchell and Keon Coleman will be a fun back-and-forth over the next month or so. PFF Sikkema (29. OT Jordan Morgan, Arizona:  After losing Jonah Jackson in free agency, the Lions could need a starter along their interior offensive line. Morgan played tackle at Arizona, but his best position in the league is likely at guard. DE Chop Robinson:  It's no surprise Chop flashed at the combine and his pro day, and while he had just four sacks last season for Penn State, he's incredibly disruptive coming off the edge. In Detroit, he'll make life easier for Aidan Hutchinson and a much-improved Lions defense.) Walter football Charlie (29. Jackson Powers-Johnson, C, Oregon: The Lions lost left guard Jonah Jackson in free agency, while center Frank Ragnow is aging and has a chronic foot ailment. Powers-Johnson could start out at guard and replace Ragnow in a year or two at center.  It took some time with an odd journey, but eventually Powers-Johnson turned himself into an impactful player for the Ducks. Powers-Johnson was a backup in 2021 before playing defensive line in an emergency role to close out that season. He was back to being a backup in 2022, but took over as the starting center in 2023 and had a superb season. The 6-foot-3, 334-pound Powers-Johnson is a heavy center who looks like a safe pick to be a solid pro starter. He is strong, nasty, and can blast open holes in the ground game. Powers-Johnson could be a starter at guard or center.   61. Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State:  Josh Reynolds is a free agent, and the Lions could use a big outside receiver to go with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.  In 2023, Coleman totaled 50 catches of 658 yards and 11 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder has good size with functional quickness, athleticism, and excellent ball skills. In 2022 for Michigan State, he recorded 58 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns while playing. Coleman opened the 2023 season, and his career as a Seminole, with a monster game of nine catches for 122 yards and three touchdowns versus LSU. Coleman also got the better of a future NFL corner in Wake Forest’s Caelen Carson in their matchup. Coleman hurt his draft stock with a slow 40 time at the combine. 73. Xavier Thomas, DE, Clemson:  The Lions grab more rotational pass-rushing talent.  Thomas is an enigma who is fast and athletic off the edge. In 2023, he notched 25 tackles and three sacks. Thomas recorded 3.5 sacks per year in both 2021 and 2020. With his speed and athleticism, it doesn’t make sense as to why Thomas did not produce more at the college level. The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder is undersized and could be a designated pass rusher as a pro, but he has talent and upside to develop. Off-the-field concerns have hurt Thomas with NFL teams.) Lions wire Risdon (29. Zach Frazier, OL, West Virginia:  Primarily a center-and a really good one-Frazier can shift to guard and fill the hole left by Jonah Jackson’s departure. PFN Cummings (24. Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA:  Trade - Lions receive No. 24 pick; Cowboys receive No. 29 pick, No. 73 pick, 2025 fourth-round pick.  Marcus Davenport serves as great depth for the Lions at EDGE, but they still need the guy opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Laiatu Latu has the kind of red-hot motor that would win over Dan Campbell, and he’s an easy player to bet on with his ruthless technique and bend.  61. Troy Franklin, WR, Oregon:  Troy Franklin is light and has suspect hands, with those factors causing him to drop in this mock. Tampa has everything you want in a first-round DB prospect, with his impressive length, decent size, and athletic profile that allows him to be fluid while possessing excellent range. CBS Podell (29. DE Darius Robinson: Darius Robinson was one of the Senior Bowl darlings who showed out all week in practice down in Mobile, Alabama. Detroit couldn't find a pass-rush complement to Hutchinson last season, and they get a dynamic athlete at that spot here. That should give their defense a critical boost with the team squarely in contention for NFC supremacy.) USA Today Middlehurst-Schwartz (29. Darius Robinson, DE, Missouri:  The native of Southfield, Michigan, said at the NFL scouting combine it would be a "dream come true" to be taken by his hometown team. With the Lions adding Marcus Davenport opposite Aidan Hutchinson, Robinson could begin his career as part of a pass-rush rotation and hone his considerable physical tools at a moderate pace.) PFN Anthony Miller (29. Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia:  After coming to a shuddering stop against the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions’ defense is set to add to their ranks in the 2024 NFL Draft.  Georgia’s Kamari Lassiter is physical and very good at run support. Detroit needs some physicality to the defense, which Lassiter can provide as a second corner or nickel back.) FTW D'Andrea (29. CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Missouri - Needs: CB, WR, EDGE, LB.  Jer’Zhan Newton would be a fit here — there may not be a player up front I like more than the Illinois wrecking ball. But he’s been unable to workout this spring due to an injury that’s not expected to impact his rookie season. Let’s hold off on him for now.  Besides, Detroit needs more help at cornerback where last year’s fixes — Cam Sutton, Emmanuel Moseley and, eventually and regrettably Kindle Vildor — failed to create meaningful change. Rakestraw’s combine results weren’t wonderful, but he’s strong and aggressive and can provide sticky press coverage in the slot. That would allow Brian Branch a little more room to freestyle at safety and, ideally, make life easier for the entire Lions defense.) Draft Network Parson (CB Terrion Arnold:  Dan Campbell has needed CBs for long enough. Terrion Arnold is the answer to their questions in the secondary. He fits the culture of toughness and grit. PFN Fragoza (29.  Byron Murphy II, DT, Texas:  A sentient wrecking ball lined up anywhere from 0 to 3-tech, Byron Murphy II is a problem at the point of attack. Lining him up with Alim McNeill and Aidan Hutchinson would cause nightmares for all 31 offenses.  73. Christian Mahogany, G, Boston College:  After tearing his ACL in 2022, Christian Mahogany bounced back with a first-team All-ACC campaign, and his Combine performance cemented his place as a top-100 pick.  92. Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida:  Following Ricky Pearsall’s pre-draft performances at the Senior Bowl and Combine, No. 92 may ultimately be too low for him. DetroitLions.com Twentyman (29. OT Graham Barton, Duke. When we get to this spot at No. 29 there's a great chance an interior offensive lineman or a wide receiver is the top player on GM Brad Holmes' board. Holmes said he won't overlook the offensive line this offseason. If Detroit can't re-sign unrestricted free agent Jonah Jackson this makes even more sense.  Barton would be a great addition in Detroit with his tenacity and versatility. He started his career at center and transitioned to left tackle but projects more inside in the NFL. At 6-foot-5, 313 pounds he's got terrific length and could really play all five spots upfront, if needed. He starts at guard and is the long-term answer at center. I think he ultimately gives Powers-Johnson a good run for the best interior lineman in this draft.) MLive Raven (29. DE Chop Robinson:  There must be something about being a Detroit Lions beat writer and trying to combat the “sacks aren’t everything narrative.” Of the players left on my board, Penn State pass rusher Chop Robinson is the one who brings a special, rare trait with their game.  Robinson is a lightning bolt off the defensive edges. It’s an elite first step. And not just elite, but elite, elite in that department. There are concerns about his all-around game, sure. But that’s why he’s here at Pick 29. Robinson would provide an immediate spark to the pass rush, and could be one of the steals of the draft when all is said and done. With all of my favorite first-round offensive line and the top cornerback options gone, I’m all in on the Penn State pass rusher. And he’s no consolation prize. USA Today Hernandez (29. JC Latham, OT, Alabama:  The Lions' offensive line could be thinned out due to free agency. It was a unit that had a lot of success, so investing in some new talent would be a good move. JC Latham has made a mark at both IMG Academy and Alabama, two storied programs. He only allowed two sacks in 408 passing plays his final season with the Crimson Tide.) He totally fits what the Lions are seeking in their O-linemen and helps their offense stay elite. If the Lions value defense more here, expect them to consider upgrading the secondary.) Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson:  While the Lions tried to address their CB depth chart by signing Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley and drafting Brian Branch, Detroit was still starting Bears castoff Kindle Vildor in the NFC Championship Game.  Nate Wiggins weighed just 178 pounds at the Combine, so he might not be the sort of physical corner Dan Campbell and the Lions will prefer. But Wiggins also showed off blazing speed with a 4.28 40-yard dash and is the best corner remaining on the board, so Detroit should take the plunge.)
