PFN Broback (29. Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama:  This is one of the best-case scenarios for the Detroit Lions in the draft. Kool-Aid McKinstry has the potential to go in the top 10, but this cornerback class is highly volatile. This class has good depth, but there is no clear favorite, meaning someone will fall.  Fortunately for Detroit, it benefits from McKinstry’s slide in this 2024 NFL Mock Draft. Yahoo Tice (29. Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn State:  Chop Robinson is a bit raw, but it’s hard to find prospects that run a legit 4.4 off the edge of a defense. With guys like Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeil already on the defensive line, Robinson would have one-on-one opportunities where his speed is more of a threat.) With his even-keeled approach, McKinstry makes for a fine plug-and-play cornerback for a group itching to take the next step as an NFC contender.) Trade acquisition Carlton Davis and free agent signing Amik Robertson figure to start on the outside with 2023 second-round pick Brian Branch holding down the slot, but a first-round CB shouldn’t be out of the question for the Lions.  Although Kool-Aid McKinstry might not boast the upside of Terrion Arnold, his Alabama teammate McKinstry is a dependable perimeter option with excellent football intelligence. PFN Caswell (29. Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn State:  The Lions will focus on improving their defense this season. While cornerback was their most significant need, they made moves in free agency to fill those shoes. Additionally, all of the top options are off the board in this 2024 NFL Mock Draft.  That leaves pass rusher as Detroit’s next biggest need. They need another presence alongside Aidan Hutchinson.  Chop Robinson is the best pure pass rusher in this draft and would immediately improve the Lions’ pass rush. Walter football Walt (29. Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB:  The Lions wanted Devon Witherspoon at No. 6, so perhaps they’ll obtain a cornerback with this pick.  Kool-Aid McKinstry was a rare freshman starter for Nick Saban. He has the size and athleticism to be an elite cornerback.  61. Detroit Lions: Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  The Lions have a great offensive line, save for right guard. That could be addressed with this pick.  Layden Robinson isn’t very athletic, but he’s a violent blocker who has impressed this season.  73.  Max Melton, CB:  Here’s another cornerback for the Lions, who really need to address their secondary.  Max Melton is a terrific athlete who is incredibly fast that receivers can’t outrun him.  164. Ty'Ron Hooper, LB, Missouri:  The Lions could stand to improve their coverage over the middle of the field.  Ty’Ron Hooper is not a finished product. He’ll need some major development.) PFF Spielberger (29. CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  In the 2023 NFL Draft, the Lions stopped the slide of stud Alabama defensive back Brian Branch who, didn’t test off the charts but was an instinctual, high-IQ football player. Why not do it again? McKinstry might be the best cornerback in the class at matching and mirroring opposing receivers, and even if he’s not an elite athlete, he’s a very good one who held up well for years against SEC competition. He’d be a great fit in Aaron Glenn’s defense, and the team needs more at cornerback beyond Carlton Davis.) Walter football Charlie (29. Jackson Powers-Johnson, C, Oregon: The Lions lost left guard Jonah Jackson in free agency, while center Frank Ragnow is aging and has a chronic foot ailment. Powers-Johnson could start out at guard and replace Ragnow in a year or two at center.  It took some time with an odd journey, but eventually Powers-Johnson turned himself into an impactful player for the Ducks. Powers-Johnson was a backup in 2021 before playing defensive line in an emergency role to close out that season. He was back to being a backup in 2022, but took over as the starting center in 2023 and had a superb season. The 6-foot-3, 334-pound Powers-Johnson is a heavy center who looks like a safe pick to be a solid pro starter. He is strong, nasty, and can blast open holes in the ground game. Powers-Johnson could be a starter at guard or center.   61.  Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia:  Josh Reynolds is a free agent, and the Lions could use another receiver to go with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.  McConkey (5-11, 187) is not the biggest or fastest receiver, but he is a gritty football player who came up with some clutch plays for Georgia in its back-to-back National Championship seasons. McConkey recorded 58 catches for 762 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022. That was a big improvement over 2021 (31-447-5). McConkey might fit best as a slot receiver at the next level. He dealt with some injuries in 2023 while catching 30 passes for 478 yards and two touchdowns. 73.  Mike Sainristil, CB, Michigan:  The Lions grab more rotational cornerback depth.  Sainristil came up with a lot of clutch plays during the 2023 season to help Michigan win a National Championship. On the year, Sainristil totaled 44 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, two sacks and six passes batted. It was a huge season with a lot of clutch plays. In 2022, he totaled 58 tackles, an interception, seven passes broken up and an interception. Sainristil has good instincts and is a willing tackler. As a pro, he would fit best as a slot corner.) PFN Ciardello (29.  Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo:  One of the more surprising falls in the draft, the ever-defensive-minded Dan Campbell can’t let Mitchell drop any further as the Detroit Lions pick up the Toledo CB.  A proven ball-hawk with six picks in the last two seasons matched with elite recovery speed, Mitchell is a versatile DB who can play anywhere in the defensive backfield.) Draft Network Eisner (29.  Ennis Rakestraw Jr., CB, Missouri:  Despite the addition of Carlton Davis III, the Lions still need corner help. PFN Schulte (29. Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson:  Nate Wiggins‘ weight will be a cause for concern for some teams, but his talent level as a man coverage corner is tough to ignore. Detroit is signaling a move towards being a predominantly man-heavy team and needs to continue bolstering its secondary to be able to do so.  61.  Chris Braswell, EDGE, Alabama:  Detroit’s defense is missing that extra three-down pass rusher for that unit to take the next step. Chris Braswell boasts excellent power to collapse the pocket and uses his length to get off blocks with ease.  He would be the perfect complement to Aidan Hutchinson.  73. Mason McCormick, OG, South Dakota State:  Detroit did sign Kevin Zeitler to lock up its starting interior for 2024. Still, the long-term outlook of that unit is up in the air with Zeitler on a one-year deal and center Frank Ragnow battling numerous injuries that saw him contemplating retirement.  Mason McCormick is a tough, physical guard who can play center and guard in the NFL.  164. Wire Editors (29. DT Johnny Newton, Illinois:  The Lions brought in veteran nose tackle D.J. Reader to play next to rising star Alim McNeill on the defensive interior. They can still use more firepower, and Newton offers just that. His ability to attack between the tackles and finish plays is a real plus for Detroit. Medical concerns could keep Latu on the board longer than his pure talent might suggest, but if he's able to stay healthy, he could be a massive steal for Detroit at this point.  61. Despite his lean frame, Kamari Lassiter has the long-strider speed and acceleration to limit route separation, which the Lions need at cornerback.) USA Today Davis (29. WR Adonai Mitchell, Texas:  How about just one more playmaker for this offense? Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA:  Trade - Lions receive No. 24 pick; Cowboys receive No. 29 pick, No. 73 pick, 2025 fourth-round pick.  Marcus Davenport serves as great depth for the Lions at EDGE, but they still need the guy opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Laiatu Latu has the kind of red-hot motor that would win over Dan Campbell, and he’s an easy player to bet on with his ruthless technique and bend.  61. Troy Franklin, WR, Oregon:  Troy Franklin is light and has suspect hands, with those factors causing him to drop in this mock. That should give their defense a critical boost with the team squarely in contention for NFC supremacy.) When we get to this spot at No. 29 there's a great chance an interior offensive lineman or a wide receiver is the top player on GM Brad Holmes' board. If Detroit can't re-sign unrestricted free agent Jonah Jackson this makes even more sense.  Barton would be a great addition in Detroit with his tenacity and versatility. He started his career at center and transitioned to left tackle but projects more inside in the NFL.
