PFN Cummings (24. Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA:  Trade - Lions receive No. 24 pick; Cowboys receive No. 29 pick, No. 73 pick, 2025 fourth-round pick.  Marcus Davenport serves as great depth for the Lions at EDGE, but they still need the guy opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Laiatu Latu has the kind of red-hot motor that would win over Dan Campbell, and he’s an easy player to bet on with his ruthless technique and bend.  61. Troy Franklin, WR, Oregon:  Troy Franklin is light and has suspect hands, with those factors causing him to drop in this mock. But his speed, dynamic RAC ability, and versatility would fit perfectly in Detroit.  92. PFN Broback (29. Byron Murphy II, DT, Texas:  Detroit is an intriguing team to watch this offseason. Many of their 2023 offseason moves shined this past year, but can they do it again? The draft will put the final touches on what has already been a solid offseason.  The Lions defense was fun to watch this year. While they need upgrades at certain positions, this group played hard for Dan Campbell. Adding players like Byron Murphy II will aid their efforts to return to the NFC Championship Game. Walter football Walt (29. Nate Wiggins, CB:  The Lions wanted Devon Witherspoon at No. 6, so perhaps they’ll obtain a cornerback with this pick. Nate Wiggins is a tall cornerback with plus athleticism and quickness.  61. Detroit Lions: Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  The Lions have a great offensive line, save for right guard. That could be addressed with this pick.  Layden Robinson isn’t very athletic, but he’s a violent blocker who has impressed this season.  73.  Max Melton, CB:  Here’s another cornerback for the Lions, who really need to address their secondary.  Max Melton is a terrific athlete who is incredibly fast that receivers can’t outrun him.  93. Johnny Wilson, WR:  The Lions may bring in someone to challenge Jameson Williams, who has been a disappointment thus far.  Johnny Wilson is a massive receiver who might have to become a tight end in the NFL.) PFN Hodgkinson (29. T.J. Tampa, CB, Iowa State:  Don’t allow the addition of Davis to dissuade you from the fact that the Lions need to upgrade the secondary in the 2024 NFL Draft. T.J. Tampa has everything you want in a first-round DB prospect, with his impressive length, decent size, and athletic profile that allows him to be fluid while possessing excellent range. CBS Podell (29. DE Darius Robinson: Darius Robinson was one of the Senior Bowl darlings who showed out all week in practice down in Mobile, Alabama. Detroit couldn't find a pass-rush complement to Hutchinson last season, and they get a dynamic athlete at that spot here. That should give their defense a critical boost with the team squarely in contention for NFC supremacy.) USA Today Middlehurst-Schwartz (29. Darius Robinson, DE, Missouri:  The native of Southfield, Michigan, said at the NFL scouting combine it would be a "dream come true" to be taken by his hometown team. With the Lions adding Marcus Davenport opposite Aidan Hutchinson, Robinson could begin his career as part of a pass-rush rotation and hone his considerable physical tools at a moderate pace.) PFN Anthony Miller (29. Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia:  After coming to a shuddering stop against the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions’ defense is set to add to their ranks in the 2024 NFL Draft.  Georgia’s Kamari Lassiter is physical and very good at run support. Detroit needs some physicality to the defense, which Lassiter can provide as a second corner or nickel back.) FTW D'Andrea (29. CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Missouri - Needs: CB, WR, EDGE, LB.  Jer’Zhan Newton would be a fit here — there may not be a player up front I like more than the Illinois wrecking ball. But he’s been unable to workout this spring due to an injury that’s not expected to impact his rookie season. Let’s hold off on him for now.  Besides, Detroit needs more help at cornerback where last year’s fixes — Cam Sutton, Emmanuel Moseley and, eventually and regrettably Kindle Vildor — failed to create meaningful change. Rakestraw’s combine results weren’t wonderful, but he’s strong and aggressive and can provide sticky press coverage in the slot. That would allow Brian Branch a little more room to freestyle at safety and, ideally, make life easier for the entire Lions defense.) Walter football Charlie (29. Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia:  The Lions could use multiple additions at corner this offseason.  Lassiter (5-11, 186) has a good skill set and established himself as the top cover corner for the Bulldogs in 2023. Lassiter is very instinctive and impressed with his ability to sustain coverage. In 2023, he recorded 37 tackles and eight passes broken up while providing steady blanket coverage on the opposing team’s top receiver. He totaled 38 tackles and four passes batted in 2022.   61. Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State:  Josh Reynolds is a free agent, and the Lions could use a big outside receiver to go with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.  In 2023, Coleman totaled 50 catches of 658 yards and 11 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder has good size with functional quickness, athleticism, and excellent ball skills. In 2022 for Michigan State, he recorded 58 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns while playing. Coleman opened the 2023 season, and his career as a Seminole, with a monster game of nine catches for 122 yards and three touchdowns versus LSU. Coleman also got the better of a future NFL corner in Wake Forest’s Caelen Carson in their matchup. Coleman hurt his draft stock with a slow 40 time at the combine. 73. Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  Both of the Detroit’s starting guards are entering free agency, and the team is likely to devote its money to re-signing Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, defensive help, and Penei Sewell next year.  Team sources said they were impressed with the play of Robinson in 2023. They stated Robinson (6-4, 315) looks like a potential starting right guard for the NFL. They note that while he has some athletic limitations, he is strong and a people mover at the point of attack. Robinson is a tough, nasty, and power right guard for the next level. He could be limited on some of the wide zone-run plays in the NFL because he lacks foot quickness and overall athletic ability. Still, he has a violent play style and demeanor. Robinson could be a second-day prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft.  93. Matt Goncalves, OT, Pittsburgh:  The Lions could use multiple offensive line draft picks due to both of their guards hitting free agency and Taylor Decker aging while being in the last year of his contract.  At 6-foot-6, 330 pounds, Goncalves is a big edge blocker for the next level who started at both left and right tackle for Pittsburgh. The Panthers bounced Goncalves back and forth between right and left tackle over 2020-2022, and as a senior, he started at left tackle before going out for the year due to surgery. Goncalves is big, strong, and has good enough movement to stay on the edge in the NFL. His body type also could make him a candidate to play guard as a pro.) PFN Helms (29. Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson:  Nate Wiggins is one of my favorite corners in the draft, but his slim build could discourage some teams and allow him to fall. If he makes it to Detroit, I see a strong fit in that secondary. He’s a scrappy, high-motor player with excellent ball skills, things that make him a strong fit with the Lions’ culture.) PFN Catalina (29.  DT Byron Murphy II:  Byron Murphy II is gaining crazy steam amongst the draft community. The physical Texas DT has been getting buzz lately with the belief that he will be a first-round selection.  His toughness and skill set are a great fit for a Dan Campbell-coached team, and adding him to the mix in Detroit feels like a no-brainer.) Christian Mahogany, G, Boston College:  After tearing his ACL in 2022, Christian Mahogany bounced back with a first-team All-ACC campaign, and his Combine performance cemented his place as a top-100 pick.  92. Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida:  Following Ricky Pearsall’s pre-draft performances at the Senior Bowl and Combine, No. 92 may ultimately be too low for him. That's literally the job description for the Lions' biggest offseason need. As a bonus, Lassiter is one of the best tacklers at his position in the draft class and aggressively attacks the run and short passes coming his way. CB Kool-Aid McKinstry:  Injuries and inconsistency plagued the Lions' cornerback group last season, so finding some high-quality reinforcements there should be a top priority this offseason. This year's class is fairly deep at the position, and could give them plenty of talented players to choose from at this spot. DetroitLions.com Twentyman (29. OT Graham Barton, Duke. When we get to this spot at No. 29 there's a great chance an interior offensive lineman or a wide receiver is the top player on GM Brad Holmes' board. Holmes said he won't overlook the offensive line this offseason. If Detroit can't re-sign unrestricted free agent Jonah Jackson this makes even more sense.  Barton would be a great addition in Detroit with his tenacity and versatility. He started his career at center and transitioned to left tackle but projects more inside in the NFL. At 6-foot-5, 313 pounds he's got terrific length and could really play all five spots upfront, if needed. He starts at guard and is the long-term answer at center. I think he ultimately gives Powers-Johnson a good run for the best interior lineman in this draft.) MLive Raven (29. DE Chop Robinson:  There must be something about being a Detroit Lions beat writer and trying to combat the “sacks aren’t everything narrative.” Of the players left on my board, Penn State pass rusher Chop Robinson is the one who brings a special, rare trait with their game.  Robinson is a lightning bolt off the defensive edges. It’s an elite first step. And not just elite, but elite, elite in that department. There are concerns about his all-around game, sure. But that’s why he’s here at Pick 29. Robinson would provide an immediate spark to the pass rush, and could be one of the steals of the draft when all is said and done. With all of my favorite first-round offensive line and the top cornerback options gone, I’m all in on the Penn State pass rusher. And he’s no consolation prize. But Wiggins also showed off blazing speed with a 4.28 40-yard dash and is the best corner remaining on the board, so Detroit should take the plunge.) MA hyperactive athlete who can rotate inside and out, Robinson’s maturation is ascending year-on-year. At 6’5” and 286 pounds, he has the size, explosiveness, and strength conversion to continue developing to a high level.  61. Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest:  Caelen Carson has the twitch and athleticism to flourish in the NFL — especially in man coverage, where he can use his instant acceleration, ball tracking, and feisty playstyle to beat receivers.  73. McKinnley Jackson, DT, Texas A&M:  McKinnley Jackson has the twitched-up athleticism to complement the existing pieces on the Lions’ defensive front and will inject explosive movement and pocket disruption to the interior.  92.  Javon Baker, WR, UCF:  After putting his skill set on show on the all-star circuit, Javon Baker’s draft stock is sky-high right now. PFN Schulte (29. Darius Robinson, EDGE, Missouri:  The Detroit Lions have loved to bet on traits in the NFL Draft, and Darius Robinson screams traits. His power, length, and explosiveness saw him dominate the SEC and at the Senior Bowl.  The Missouri prospect also likely tests out of the gym at the NFL Combine. Detroit needs another three-down edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, and Robinson fits their mold of prospects perfectly.  61. Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest:  Detroit boosted their pass rush in the first round and turn to their secondary in the second round of this 2024 NFL Mock Draft as they continue to revamp their defense.  Caelen Carson is a competitive and physical outside corner prospect who fits the mold of a press-man corner. Carson’s ball skills need work, but his physicality and competitiveness stand out on film and resemble the kind of players the Lions have sought recently.  73. Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida:  After devoting their early picks of this 2024 NFL Mock Draft to defense, Detroit turns to finding talent for their wide receiver room. The Lions need another outside threat at wide receiver with Josh Reynolds departing in free agency.  Ricky Pearsall‘s route-running and hands are among the best in this class, and he has a tremendously physical mentality in his playstyle. He would be a great complement to Amon-Ra St. Brown in the slot and Jameson Williams’s deep speed.  92.  DeWayne Carter, DT, Duke:  Part of Detroit’s defensive woes were due to them missing another difference-maker on the defensive line next to Alim McNeill. John Cominsky and Benito Jones filled in but are role players, and Levi Onwuzurike has struggled with multiple injuries, leaving a gap in their defensive line.  DeWayne Carter is an underrated interior pass rusher, boasting tremendous quickness and speed-to-power ability to collapse the pocket. However, Kamari Lassiter is still a really good player, and the Lions desperately need help in their cornerback room as it plagued them late in the year and in the playoffs.  Lassiter is a bit light with his 6’0″ and 180-pound frame, but he plays bigger than he is and brings his physicality into both the passing game and running game. Kalen King‘s downhill trigger and physicality against the run and screen game more than makeup for his underwhelming size.  Harrison bullied King in their matchup, and the same will likely happen against other physical receivers at the next level. But King won’t have to face a generational prospect weekly, and his route recognition and reactionary athleticism make him a fun fit in this defense.)
