NFL Week 7: What we learned from Sunday's games (Detroit Lions 23, Atlanta Falcons 22 - 1) This one got fun late, as games are wont to do involving the 2020 Falcons. Atlanta's latest collapse could have probably been avoided had it not scored a go-ahead touchdown. Todd Gurley tried to down the ball at the Lions' 1 to set up a last-second field goal, but his momentum took him into the end zone, giving the Falcons a 22-16 lead. Matthew Stafford used the remaining 64 seconds to drive Detroit to a game-winning score, hitting T.J. Hockenson from 11 yards out as the clock expired. Matt Prater, who pushed a 46-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter but connected from 49 yards out soon after, split the uprights on a 48-yard extra-point attempt to end the game. It was all so Falcons. 2) It couldn't have been lost on Matt Patricia what happened to Dan Quinn just two weeks ago. The Lions entered Sunday's contest in far better shape, in early wild-card contention even, but a loss to the Falcons would have been a lost opportunity. And it might have been one that caught up to Patricia and Detroit at the end of the regular season. Instead, thanks to the heroics of Stafford, Kenny Golladay and Romeo Okwara, the Lions (3-3) return home on a two-game winning streak before taking on a Colts team that has looked vulnerable in recent weeks. 3) The Falcons (1-6) are three plays away from being 4-3. That would have them a half-game off the NFC South lead. Interim coach Raheem Morris delivered Atlanta its first win a week ago, but it took just one more for the team's deep-rooted issues to arise. The Falcons can't run the ball with any consistency and their pass defense might be worse -- the perfect ingredients to blowing big leads. The previous front office invested heavily on both fronts in recent years, so perhaps the Falcons will experience a comeback of their own. But it's looking more likely that they've wasted the primes of Matt Ryan and Julio Jones. -- Adam Maya): https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-week-7-what-we-learned-from-sunday-s-games
Week 7 Takeaways: Steelers Hang on for 6-0, Baker’s Comeback, Stafford Keeps Lions Alive (Matthew Stafford Does His Thing: Down six, he had to take the Lions 75 yards in 64 seconds with no timeouts. After an incompletion to start the drive, he hit passes for 13, 22 and 29 (the last one a late-in-the-down special), with clock-stopping spikes in between, to set up the game-tying, late-in-the-down 11-yard laser to T.J. Hockenson. In all, he was 25-for-36 for 340 in Atlanta. Prater’s PAT From 48 Wins It: The Lions touchdown as time expired made it 22-22, so Detroit needed the PAT. Thanks to Danny Amendola picking up the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for removing his helmet during the celebration. Prater delivered. Falcons’ Will to Lose Greater Than the Lions’ Will to Lose: It was infuriating watching both these offenses slam the brakes in the second half considering how good the quarterbacks are and how bad the pass defenses are, and neither team is capable of closing out a game. But it was even more incredible watching the Lions make Matthew Stafford overcome as many obstacles as possible on the final drive, from T.J. Hockenson catching a sideline pass with no timeouts and deliberately staying inbounds, to an uncharacteristically drop-prone Danny Amendola costing them 15 yards by removing his helmet while celebrating the game-tying touchdown (yes, it’s a dumb rule, but everyone knows the rule), making the game-winning PAT 48 yards. The Falcons Outright Refuse to Recognize Situational Football: The Falcons were down two. It was first-and-goal from the 10 with 70 seconds left and the Lions were out of timeouts. Matt Patricia’s group understood that letting the clock bleed then needing a block or miss on a 25- to 30-yard field goal was the worst-case scenario for the Lions. So why didn’t Raheem Morris’s group figure that out? Or, if they did, why did nobody tell Todd Gurley?): https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/10/25/week-7-breakdown-analysis-steelers-hold-on-for-wild-win-baker-mayfield-comeback-falcons-choke
FMIA Week 7: A Strange Day In NFL, And Why Bucs Signed Antonio Brown (Offensive Players of the Week - Matthew Stafford, quarterback, Detroit. Stafford’s put up his share of sick numbers over the years, but the 23-22 win at Atlanta was about being great when he absolutely had to be. Stafford, taking advantage of a dumb strategic error by Todd Gurley, took the Falcons 75 yards in eight plays to win, capping it as time expired with an 11-yard TD pass to last year’s first-round pick, tight end T.J. Hockenson. The Lions are 3-3, and with a survivable five-game stretch coming up (Indy, at Minnesota, Washington, at Carolina, Houston), dreams of the seventh seed dance in their heads.): https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/10/26/bucs-antonio-brown-nfl-week-7-fmia-peter-king/
NFL Winners and Losers: Bill Belichick made a big mistake not convincing Tom Brady to stay (Losers - Falcons and a new way to lose: If you thought the Atlanta Falcons were done losing in weird ways just because Dan Quinn isn’t their coach anymore, you were wrong. Sunday’s loss might not be quite as bad as blowing two-touchdown leads in the fourth quarter, which Atlanta did twice earlier this season, but it’s a rare one. The Falcons lost because Todd Gurley scored a touchdown. The Detroit Lions let him score because they were going to run out of time, Gurley tried to hold up and couldn’t, barely crossing the goal line. Given the Falcons’ star-crossed season, everyone knew what was coming next. The Lions drove down and scored with no time on the clock, as Matthew Stafford hit T.J. Hockenson for the win. Unbelievable. It doesn’t really matter for the Falcons, whose season is done and fans are numb to heartbreaking losses. But it’s one for the time capsule.): https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-winners-and-losers-bill-belichick-made-a-big-mistake-not-convincing-tom-brady-to-stay-231913500.html
32 things we learned from Week 7 of NFL season (2. Incidentally, tip of the cap to Lions K Matt Prater, who had to hit a 48-yard extra point for the win after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was assessed to Detroit WR Danny Amendola following Stafford's TD strike to TE T.J. Hockenson. 3. Game-ending drama aside, Lions at Falcons had to be one of the most unwatchable games I can recollect. That opinion had nothing to do with the quality of the teams, play or players ... but due to the awful uniform presentation. Detroit's monochrome silver – functionally, a load of gray – is among the league's worst alternate kits ... but far less putrid than the black-and-red gradient look Atlanta unveiled Sunday. Roger Goodell should consider heavy fines for both teams for this visual crime – one that will be widely perpetuated as we see the highlights of a game where the momentum constantly flipped in the final period. 4. But the locals had to be happy, since rooting for two former University of Georgia stars – Lions RB D'Andre Swift and Stafford – trumps one, Falcons RB Todd Gurley. 5. And though Gurley's inability to fall short of the goal line with 64 seconds to go probably cost Atlanta the win – he stumbled forward and broke the plane while seeming to know the better play was falling short and letting the Falcons bleed the clock before attempting a game-winning field goal in the final ticks – his fantasy fans love him for his inability to resist the end zone's siren song, even if he'd shown such situational discipline before while with the Rams. 5a. "I was mad as hell," Gurley said of his accidental TD. "I was trying not to. My momentum took me in. ... I've been in plenty of those situations since my rookie year, about six or seven. I've always got down, just an unfortunate one right there."): https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/nate-davis/2020/10/25/nfl-week-7-32-things-we-learned-2020/6034387002/

CBS (Lions - B+: When bad things happen in a Lions game, they're usually happening to Detroit, but on Sunday things finally went their way. In one of the wildest games you'll ever see, the Lions scored 10 points over the final 3:16 to pull out the win. After Todd Gurley gifted them a possession with one minute left, Matthew Stafford took advantage of it. Stafford drove his team 75 yards in 64 seconds to get the game-winning touchdown. The Lions QB completed four passes on the drive with two going to T.J. Hockenson, including the game-winning TD with no time left. Kicker Matt Prater also came up big. Not only did he hit three long field goals (49, 50, 51), but he also nailed a 48-yard extra point that won the game on the final play. ): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-7-grades-packers-get-an-a-for-steamrolling-texans-cowboys-get-an-f-for-blowout-loss/
