NFL Draft bust candidates: Malik Willis, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Drake London and the riskiest picks in 2022 (The other seemingly surefire first-round quarterback prospect is Kenny Pickett. The Pitt product is the most pro-ready of this year's crop of passers and threw for 42 touchdowns last year. He has solid size, a good arm, is very accurate and can move around the pocket well. What's not to like about Pickett? Two reasons. First, there are questions about his upside and whether he will be able to elevate the play of those around him. Second, he is a bit of a one-year wonder, as he totaled only 38 touchdowns compared to 24 interceptions in his previous three seasons combined. And during that time, he never posted a completion percentage higher than 61.6 percent.) Schein: My 9 strongest draft takes ahead of Round 1 (5. Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett are franchise quarterbacks: And I'll bet they both go higher than many people anticipate. Willis is a tremendous leader with supreme athleticism and a cannon for an arm. Yes, he'll need time to develop, but I feel the same way about him as I did about Trey Lance and Justin Fields in last year's draft. Especially Lance. Frankly, I think Willis has some Josh Allen traits, and regular readers of this column know I've been driving the Allen bandwagon from Day 1. Seattle, which holds the No. 9 pick, would be a great fit. Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Detroit and New Orleans are logical landing spots, too. I love Pickett's body of work and how it projects to the pros. Having started a whopping 49 games at Pittsburgh, his experience shows. The 23-year-old just does everything right. On "The Adam Schein Podcast" in November, Pickett compared himself to Ryan Tannehill. I can dig, with Tannehill being an athletic QB who can make all the throws and win games. Actually, I like Pickett more than Tannehill. He turned Pitt into a real college football team for the first time in years. He changed everything. I think he could immediately start -- and thrive -- on a team like Carolina. Could the Saints jump up above the Panthers and snag the Heisman finalist? Possibly. He'd also make a lot of sense for the Steelers. It's a quarterback league, and I believe Willis and Pickett are legit franchise dudes. I wouldn't hesitate to take either in the top 10.) NFL Draft: Meet the top four quarterback prospects in the class (Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh - Bio: The son of an All-American Linebacker and college soccer star, Pickett grew up in an athletic family. He was a highly successful dual-threat QB at Ocean Township High School. Rated the nation’s No. 10 pro-style quarterback by 247Sports, Pickett initially committed to Temple before deciding to go to Pitt. The New Jersey native spent five seasons in Pittsburgh, working as the Panthers’ starter over the last four years. He closed out his college career as Pitt’s all-time leader in passing yards (12,303) and passing scores while also recording a record-breaking 20 career rushing touchdowns. Pros: Above-average arm strength, can execute as a passer at all levels of the field, upper-level mobility and willingness to improvise with his legs. Cons: Inconsistent producer, only one season of standout play (2021), takes too many sacks, the hands (*shrug emoji*). NFL Comp: Kirk Cousins. Fantasy Fit: The phrase “practice makes progress” aptly describes Pickett’s five-year college career. From 2018 through 2020, he averaged a PFF grade of 68.5. However, in 2021, he earned a 92.3 from the analytics company. HCs and GMs love that sort of growth, making him the consensus No. 1 QB in this year’s class. While most agree he’ll be the first signal caller drafted, there’s disagreement about where he’ll land. From his hometown ties to Steel City to his relationship with Matt Rhule (that dates back to 2017 when he was being recruited by Temple), most draftniks expect Pickett to either stay in Pittsburgh or end up in Carolina. However, Yahoo draft expert Eric Edholm believes that Kenny P is destined for the bayou, as discussed on the Rookie Snapshot Pod. The Saints are certainly at the top of a rebuild and could be inspired by Pickett’s evolution. That’s a trait that the team’s presumptive starter has struggled to demonstrate. With Jameis Winston on a two-year deal (worth $28M) and only Andy Dalton backing him up, Pickett could see the field in 2022. Whether due to injury or incompetence, a few spot starts are probable outcomes for the 23-year-old. That said, it’s unlikely he’ll provide any immediate and/or regular redraft value, regardless of where he ends up.) Finding NFL player comparisons for the top 32 prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft (Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh (TSN: Derek Carr, Fresno State (2014), NFL: Andy Dalton, TCU (2011), RAS: Geno Smith, West Virginia (2013)): Pickett burst onto the scene in 2021, becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist and leading one of the most potent passing attacks in college football. He completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,319 yards with 42 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He also displayed solid mobility at the combine, posting a 4.73 40 time and 4.29 shuttle. Pickett has a similar profile to Derek Carr, who was just a bit faster than Pickett (4.69 40) and a little more mobile (4.20 shuttle), but also was just a bit smaller — Pickett is 6-3, 217; Carr was 6-2, 214 out of Fresno State. Carr and Pickett both share a similar profile as strong-arm quarterbacks.) (4-22-22): https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-player-comparisons-2022-nfl-draft/s5dzevmivykfsrkfx9ibccqt
2022 NFL Draft Superlatives: Handing out class awards (Christian Ponder Award: Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh (Quarterback who'll go much earlier than he should) - Wilson: We like Pickett, we really do. But we don't think any quarterback in this class is worth a top-10 pick. At the end of the day, we think the Panthers will go offensive line at No. 6 or trade out if possible. But let's assume they take Pickett. It's the equivalent of the Giants using the sixth overall pick on Daniel Jones in 2019. Jones was a second-round talent who, had he gone in Round 2, would've had the expectations of (wait for it) a second-rounder. Not a franchise-saving quarterback. It was unfair to put that on Jones who has been good at times but underwhelming at others. Pickett would be coming into a worse situation in Carolina, where the offensive line is in shambles and fixing it should be priority No. 1 for whomever ends up under center.l) (4-22-22): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/nfl-draft-2022-superlatives-prospect-wholl-instantly-live-up-to-the-hype-qb-wholl-go-too-early-and-more/
2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Quarterbacks (4. KENNY PICKETT, PITTSBURGH (BIG BOARD RANK: 42): The single biggest riser at the quarterback position, Pickett didn't earn a single sub-70.0 game grade all year. 2022 Detroit Lions Draft preview: GM Brad Holmes faces huge decision at quarterback (Day 1/Early Day 2 options: Liberty’s Malik Willis, Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, Ole Miss’ Matt Corral, North Carolina’s Sam Howell. Pickett has potentially worked his way into the conversation in early Round 1 likely because he is a far more pro-ready prospect. He isn’t as exciting of a player as Willis and his ceiling isn’t as high as him, either. However, there is less risk surrounding Pickett. The Lions did bring Pickett in for a top-30 visit, so there is at least moderate interest in him.) NFL comps for draft QBs: Corral next Jake Plummer? (Kenny Pickett
Pittsburgh (PRO COMPARISON: Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders) - This might be the first time I can remember when the blend of comps didn't yield a single player with more than an 18 percent top match for any of the top five prospects in a position group. This suggests that positional scarcity at quarterback is driving where these signal-callers will be drafted even more than in a normal year. The lead comp typically falls in the 20-to-27 percent match range for the top five players at a position. While my models always include multiple player comps, there are usually only one or two that stand out as most similar. Here, Carr edged out four slightly lower percentage matches, including Andy Dalton, a taller Chase Daniel and a later-career Jay Cutler (when his deep ball didn't have consistent top-end velocity). Computer Vision shows that Pickett was best in the FBS last season against pro-style defenses (defined as those with hybrid fronts, disguised man vs. zone backs and/or non-base defensive formations). I converted his college performance to the NFL passer rating formula, which resulted in a 112.2 mark versus such defenses. Pro Football Focus adds that Pickett led the NFL with 25 touchdown passes against the blitz in 2021, which was four more than his first four college seasons combined (21). He was also one of just three QBs in the FBS to earn at least 10 passing TDs (14, to be exact) when under pressure. All three points support a smoother transition to the NFL from a résumé standpoint. TEAM FIT: Carolina Panthers - Interestingly, Sam Darnold does come up in the comp pool. I spent a lot of time evaluating Pickett's arm talent on deep passes, and of the metrics I measure -- accuracy, speed the ball travels en route to the pass catcher (including how consistently by route), how consistently the ball arrives in the direction the receiver is traveling, etc. -- he falls within the 65-to-75 percentiles in the historical sample in all of them, which is squarely above average. Pickett is my top QB in this class, and making this Pittsburgh Panther into a Carolina Panther creates the most wins in 2021, even though Carolina is not the most QB-needy team.) Lions draft picks: Ranking 5 best combinations for Detroit's two Round 1 selections (Combination 3 - No. 2: Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame. No. 32: Kenny Pickett, QB, Pitt. Kyle Hamilton is the type of player who has been all over draft boards. No one really knows where teams are going to value an elite talent at a position that — while more important than in the past — isn't considered premium in the draft. Make no mistake: For his talent, there's no reach for Hamilton at No. 2. He's someone it's easy to make a case for the Lions passing on or picking up. With that in mind, it's not hard to imagine a world where Kenny Pickett falls to No. 32. A lot of teams just picked up new quarterbacks, and others might just want to wait until next season to find "their guy." If one QB gets picked, perhaps the floodgates open, but Pickett would be a "safe" option for the Lions heading into the future.) 2022 NFL Draft quarterback rankings: Will Kenny Pickett or Malik Willis be drafted first? (1. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Pickett and Liberty quarterback Malik Willis are running neck-and-neck to be the first passer selected in 2022. In terms of overall ceiling, Willis could be the better bet. He’s more athletic and has a bigger arm, but has rarely been tested against top competition. Pickett, on the other hand is: a) pretty dang athletic (you have to be in order to get a move outlawed in the NCAA). b) in possession of a big enough arm to throw for more than 330 yards per game while throwing 42 touchdown passes as a senior. c) backed by a resume against a good, but not great ACC lineup last fall. Pickett broke out last fall, rising from a middle-of-the-pack starter in the ACC to a bonafide Heisman Trophy candidate (he finished third). He’s not quite as bulletproof as his 42:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio suggest — he still blanks open wideouts and makes mistimed throws into coverage — but his risks are generally worth the reward. His rise was predicated on his ability to improvise, turning broken plays into big gains and guiding Pitt to its first ACC title. At his best, Pickett is the kind of quarterback who can drop deep balls into a bucket, operating on the kind of level that will absolutely translate to the NFL. He can embrace the vertical passing offenses that have become commonplace in the NFL playoffs. He’s also elusive enough to fill the dual-threat role teams have coveted when it comes to extending plays and picking up vital first downs on the ground. Pickett ran for 13 touchdowns the last two seasons. Though he doesn’t have ludicrous top-end speed, he’s fast enough to escape pressure and has a strong enough arm to make big throws on the run. But there may be a little too much gunslinger in him. The plays he made at Pitt won’t all scale up against NFL defenses. He’s going to sail throws as a rookie that land comfortably in a deep safety’s hands that wasn’t even on your television screen a second ago. He’s too eager to leave the pocket when he’d be better served stepping up. On Sundays, that is going to create problems. There’s a lot of variance in this class of quarterbacks in general. The always thoughtful Derrik Klassen over at Football Outsiders sees these flaws as troubling enough tank his Day 1 stock. I see a player who ran an NFL-style offense, made a massive leap last season, and has the tools to keep growing in the right environment. His ceiling may not be as high as Willis’s, but his stable floor suggests he’s the kind of quarterback who can get you to the postseason, even with some devastatingly bad plays along the way.) NFL odds: 4 early best bets for the NFL Draft (First Quarterback Taken: Kenny Pickett +225 at FOX Bet - I like the plus money aspect of this bet. Kenny Pickett has less upside than the wagering favorite in Malik Willis, but he is ready to play now. The first team that could draft a quarterback is Detroit at No. 2, and I do not expect the Lions to grab one. A team that isn’t a quarterback away from competing for the Super Bowl needs to draft the best player on their board, which will not be Willis. The next team to consider would be the Carolina Panthers at No. 6. They need a quarterback in the worst way, and Pickett can provide them with a QB who is ready to play sooner than Willis. Pickett at +225 presents great value.) (4-7-22): https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-odds-4-early-best-bets-for-the-nfl-draft

Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (2021 stats: 4,319 passing yards, 42 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions) - Klatt's thoughts: "Pickett does a lot of things from a recognition standpoint with what he sees from a defense — not only the defensive backfield but also the defensive front. When you look at the quarterbacks that have won Super Bowls, really since the year 2000, what you'll see is on average these guys have started somewhere around the 36 games mark. 2022 NFL Draft: The top 11 quarterbacks (2
Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (Height: 6’3″ (60th), Weight: 217 (36th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.73 seconds (66th), Vertical Jump: 34 inches (76th), Broad Jump: 10’1″ (90th)): Bio: Kenny Pickett was one of the top high school prospects coming out of New Jersey in the 2017 recruiting class, and after originally committing to Temple, he flipped his commitment to Pittsburgh, where he spent his entire collegiate career. Pickett started the final game of the season during his true freshman year, leading Pittsburgh to an upset over Miami, who at the time was ranked the number-two team in the country. In that victory, Pickett hit on 18 of 29 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, and ran for two more scores. Pickett would be the Panthers starting quarterback for the rest of his time on campus, and he decided to use the extra year of eligibility granted to college athletes due to COVID-19 to return for one more year this past season. He is probably glad he did, as Pickett put himself into first-round contention with a season that saw him finish as a Heisman finalist. He threw for 4,319 yards and 42 touchdowns, and became the school’s career leader in passing touchdowns and passing yards, eclipsing Dan Marino. Stat to Know: Over his first four years on campus, Pickett threw 39 touchdown passes. He threw 42 in his final season. Strengths: While the argument for Willis is one of upside and ceiling, the argument for Pickett and the quarterback we are going to discuss next is one of floor. During his time in Pittsburgh Pickett displayed the ability to attack all levels of the field, to layer in throws around defenders and over coverage, and to work through concepts and get the football where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. Pickett can attack defenses with anticipation on throws, and take advantage of coverage with an understanding of concepts and leverage. On this completion against Duke, you see those traits as he delivers the stop route on time and in rhythm, putting the throw towards the boundary and away from the leverage of the nearest defender. As we have long maintained here at Touchdown Wire, yardage after the catch is in part a quarterback statistic. Pickett’s timing, rhythm and placement create the opportunity for YAC on this play. Pickett is an accurate passer, and that continues even when he is on the move. In a win over Clemson that put him firmly in the first-round discussion, one of his biggest throws came on this third-down conversion before halftime, where he was used on a designed sprint-out to the right and dropped in a perfect throw while rolling out. While not having the athleticism of Willis, Pickett can move well in the pocket — with a caveat to be discussed — and as we have seen, he can throw well when forced off the spot or while on the move. Weaknesses: Much of the discussion regarding Pickett this draft cycle has focused on his hand size. To be clear, measuring in with 8.5-inch hands makes him an outlier, as the last quarterback with such a measurement was Michael Vick. However, that measurement does need to be given context, as our own Doug Farrar did during the Combine. Are you seeing fumble issues? With 38 fumbles over four-plus years, including 26 lost fumbles, perhaps that is a big number. Then, watch him play in the elements. A few years ago Brett Rypien — a quarterback I was rather high on — faced similar concerns and you could see issues crop up when he was playing in the elements. Pickett played his home games in Pittsburgh, and this past season you did not see issues with him losing the football in clean pockets due to weather conditions. However, in 2019 he coughed up the football in a game against Virginia Tech that was played in rainy conditions, where the ball seemed to slip out of his hands. That was prior to him wearing a glove on his throwing hand. However, the biggest concern, from where I sit, is how Picket handles pressure in the pocket. When he knows it is coming — and where it is coming from — he is adept at moving, sliding and creating space to extend plays. However, if the pressure comes in an unexpected manner, then his response to the pressure is a bit more erratic. In the world of simulated pressures, where sometimes the points of pressure in the pocket come from areas you are not expecting them to, that is going to be something he must improve upon at the next level. Conclusion: There are two teams that I think would be ideal landing spots for Pickett: Carolina and New Orleans. Both teams — with Ben McAdoo in Carolina and Pete Carmichael in New Orleans — are likely going to be rooted in West Coast passing concepts, a system that might be the ideal fit for Pickett and what he does best. Pickett is an accurate passer who throws with touch, rhythm and anticipation, things that still matter at the position. If he can clean up how he handles pressure in the pocket — or gets the chance to play behind a great offensive line — he can grow into an upper-level NFL starting quarterback. Comparison: Joe Marino of The Draft Network went with the Andy Dalton comparison, and that seems rather accurate. Resources: For a deeper dive on Pickett, you can watch this extensive breakdown of him put together by myself and Matt Waldman of the Rookie Scouting Portfolio. You can also watch this dive into Pickett and the mental perspective.) (4-4-22): https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/best-draft-quarterbacks-malik-willis-desmond-ridder-kenny-pickett-nfl-draft/
Best scheme fits for the top 5 quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft (KENNY PICKETT, PITTSBURGH PANTHERS: If Pickett is the player we saw in 2021 and not the one from his earlier seasons at Pittsburgh, then letting him drop back a lot and make plays is the way to go. There are some inconsistencies with the process and his composure in the pocket at times, but he was able to mitigate that with some incredible play outside the pocket and outside of structure in 2021. To a certain degree, what Kliff Kingsbury does with the Arizona Cardinals could work. Letting Pickett drop back from shotgun while using a lot of no-huddle, up-tempo pace — with a slightly less elaborate playbook compared to other dropback schemes —would allow him to use his athleticism to make plays if he can’t find anything down the field. From a macro perspective, this works. But conceptually, a team from the Andy Reid tree with a heavy usage of 3-by-1 (trips) formations would help Pickett have a clear view of how the defense reacts to those formational stressors pre-snap.) Monson: Ranking the top six quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft (3. KENNY PICKETT, PITTSBURGH: I can see a world where Pickett becomes a solid NFL starter, but I think his negatives are being overlooked a little too much thus far. And I’m not talking about his small hands — I’m talking about a questionable pocket presence and a tendency to hold onto the ball far too long. He often works himself into pressure even when none should be there. His reaction to that pressure is to drop his eyes and make something happen with his legs. That is exponentially harder at the next level, and NFL benches are littered with quarterbacks who were good enough athletes in college to consistently make that move but who get chased down and buried by NFL defensive linemen. Pickett can certainly fix a lot of those issues, and it’s hard to deny his production in 2021 despite those problems, but young quarterbacks struggle with the speed of the NFL game, forcing them to hold onto the ball too long. Pickett already skews in that direction, and that’s got the recipe for some ugly early play at the next level.) (4-1-22): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-top-quarterbacks-2022-nfl-draft-monson
2022 NFL Draft Board: Quarterbacks (2. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh--Pickett is the most polished and ready-to-roll of this draft class. That often gets couched with concerns over his developmental upside, a fair critique of the Pitt passer. Pickett won nearly every collegiate quarterbacking award in 2021 after a monster season for the Panthers where his consistency improved. He’s got a strong arm that comes easily and without the need for a lot of space to throw. The ball placement is very impressive to all layers of the field, able to hit receivers in stride and away from the defense. Pickett has strong legs and excellent pocket manipulation skills, able to move either subtly or dramatically to avoid the rush. Very good understanding of his options and best matchups to exploit. Has the height, strength and desired bulk for the position. Pickett has enough athleticism to scramble for yards. There are drawbacks. He’ll be 24 as a rookie. Pickett has unusually small hands (8.5 inches) and short arms (30.75 inches), which leads to ball security and handling issues. His productivity spiked as a senior, which coincides with an upgraded supporting cast. Separating Pickett from that is tricky. He doesn’t always reset his feet when forced to move and it impacts his accuracy, though that got better during Senior Bowl week. There are some late decisions to escape the rush, too. Pickett is a high-floor prospect with impressive traits, but there sure feels like a ceiling a la Jared Goff or Matt Schaub--good, reliable quarterbacks who can successfully manage talented teams but don’t elevate lesser ones. First-round worthy.) (3-31-22): https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3449/2022-NFL-Draft-Board-Quarterbacks
Top 10 Quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft: Malik Willis paces the field ahead of Kenny Pickett and Sam Howell (2. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Banking on himself, Kenny Pickett returned for a fifth year at Pittsburgh. Pickett then rewrote the Pitt quarterback record books, toppling the great Dan Marino in the process. A dominant passer with the proven ability to bring out the best in his teammates, Pickett’s ascension to the top of the class was only thwarted by the No. 1 player on this list. Pickett has everything you’d expect to find in a future NFL star. He’s a leader with a terrific arm. He’s also a dynamic athlete with a pass-first mentality who will do everything to see success. Pickett is a coach’s dream at the position and a constant student of the game. His fake slide created a new rule in college football, and his name is forever etched in CFB glory. Yet, for all his success on the college field and at the Senior Bowl, he had to answer the most trivial question in his evaluation — his hand size. Despite measuring in with “historically small” hands, Pickett never displayed any lack of arm strength or accuracy. There isn’t anything to not like about Pickett — especially when you see the video of him laughing off the hand-size questions with a certain team who has the No. 6 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.) 5 perfect player-scheme fits; plus, QB pro day evals (QB Kenny Pickett: Pickett, my top-rated quarterback in the 2022 draft, put up a solid performance during a 56-throw workout in front of scouts on Monday. He is deadly accurate on short and intermediate tosses but lacks A+ arm strength and range. His deep throws tend to float and flutter, but he makes up for his lack of pop with high-arcing passes that are released early in routes. Given that we've seen other QBs (Peyton Manning, Chad Pennington and Drew Brees in his later years) succeed with the tactic, I do not believe Pickett's arm strength will be an issue in the NFL if he continues to master the art of getting the ball "out and up." Overall, Pickett's best qualities are his experience (49 college starts) and expertise running an offense that featured plenty of pro-style elements. He is a winner with a knack for making plays inside and outside of the pocket. Although he is not regarded as an elite athlete, Pickett moves well and displays enough elusiveness to be a factor on the perimeter as a ball-carrier. As the game trends toward requiring a more athletic playmaker at the position, Pickett's mobility and impromptu throwing skills should enable him to succeed at the next level, despite the continued conversation about his hand size.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Post-Combine II (Down - Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh and Malik Willis, QB, Liberty: The NFL had an epic and historic session in free agency with a lot of movement of quarterbacks around the league. Aaron Rodgers re-signed with Green Bay; Tom Brady went back to Tampa Bay; Russell Wilson was traded to the Broncos; Deshaun Watson was traded to the Browns; Carson Wentz was traded to the Commanders; and Mitchell Trubisky was signed by the Steelers. As a result, a lot of potential landing spots for quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Malik Willis seem to have disappeared. Denver and Washington are lost options in the top 20. Tampa Bay won't take a quarterback late in the first round. Pittsburgh could pass on a quarterback in the first round after signing Trubisky. The Colts do not have a first-round pick to use on Willis or Pickett as the replacement for Wentz. The Saints appear likely to re-sign Jameis Winston and could pass on a quarterback at No. 18. The Seahawks and Panthers appear to be the only real chances for Pickett and Willis to go in the top half of the first round. After the run on quarterbacks in free agency, the quarterback prospects for the 2022 NFL Draft could all face real slides.) (3-22-22): https://walterfootball.com/draft2022stock_27.php

NFL quarterback stock watch: Who's up after Aaron Rodgers re-signed and Russell Wilson got traded? (Stock up: Kenny Pickett - The first night of NFL Combine workouts were dedicated to meme-ing Pickett’s below-average hand size. While Twitter was busy getting off jokes, the former Pittsburgh star was uncorking rainbows that hit wide receivers he’d barely had a chance to work with in stride downfield. While the 2022 class of quarterback prospects is fairly weak, Pickett stands out as the most pro-ready passer of the bunch. He could be the top option for a win-now team in need of a plug-and-play passer but not interested in this year’s underwhelming crop of free agent QBs. The Broncos were an obvious fit, but even with them off the market there are a handful of places were his services could be warranted — Carolina and Seattle both have top 10 picks and could be prime candidates. Things could be even better if Pickett slides down the draft board. The Saints and Steelers could both use a developmental passer who can start Week 1 and has room to grow. Heck, the Colts don’t have a Day 1 pick, but have a little extra ammunition for a trade up the draft board now after dealing Wentz. Pickett’s possibilities remain fairly wide open even despite a couple big quarterback moves. Ten QBs worth pursuing via free agency/draft/trade (5. Kenny Pickett
Pittsburgh: Coming off a solid showing at the NFL Scouting Combine, Pickett is the top quarterback in this year's draft class. I really like his poise in the pocket, as he never looks rattled by pressure, and he has plenty of arm strength to make all the throws. He took a lot of heat for a fake slide that led to a score in the ACC Championship Game -- and rightfully so -- but I love the swagger and confidence behind the decision. He'll bring that same confidence to the next level and will be a guy who commands the huddle and rallies the locker room. I see Pickett as the most pro-ready QB in this class.) NFL Combine 2022: Biggest winners and losers at every position (Loser: KENNY PICKETT, PITTSBURGH - This one comes down to one thing — his 8.5-inch hand measurement. He’s not a “loser,” per se, as it was already known he’d measure in with small hands. Still, it doesn't take away from the fact that it ties the smallest measurement for any quarterback who has taken an NFL snap since the league started measuring. It’s something that will factor into evaluations for some, but it's not a death knell.) (3-8-22): https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-combine-2022-biggest-winners-and-losers-at-every-position
NFL Draft stock watch: Who raised -- or lowered -- their profile at the 2022 Combine? (Stock neutral: Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh - Pickett threw extremely well in Indianapolis, launching darts to slot receivers he’d never played with before and lofting rainbows to open sprinters downfield. But you may not have heard about this, because Thursday was dedicated to meme-ing his relatively small 8’5 inch hand size. As a result — and thanks to some solid throws from Liberty’s Malik Willis — Pickett may have lost his place as QB1 in this year’s draft despite showcasing the deep-ball accuracy that made him 2021’s top college passer. He remains the most league-ready quarterback in his class, but without elite measurables or arm strength could wind up fading compared to higher-ceiling, lower-floor passers like Liberty’s Malik Willis or Ole Miss’s Matt Corral. Or maybe teams will see throws like this. And decide hand size isn’t an accurate predictor of quarterback success after all.) 2022 NFL Draft News and Notes: League isn’t sweating Kenny Pickett’s hand size (NFL isn’t sweating Kenny Pickett’s hand size - Pickett’s hands measured out as 8.5 inches, which is small for an NFL QB. The small measurement was expected for months by pundits, scouts, and executives alike. Pickett typically wears gloves on both hands to mitigate any concerns about his ability to grip the ball. When Pro Football Network asked an AFC head coach about his thoughts on Pickett’s hand size, he said he wasn’t worried about the small measurement. A longtime AFC scout told PFN that while QBs with smaller hands historically struggle in the league, he isn’t worried about Pickett because of his experience playing in the cold weather of Pittsburgh. Pickett is expected to be selected in the top half of the first round of April’s NFL Draft. Teams like the Carolina Panthers (No. 6), Denver Broncos (No. 9), Washington Commanders (No. 11), and Cleveland Browns (No. 13) could be interested in Pickett. The Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 20 could also be in the mix to trade up and acquire Pickett.) The leader for the Detroit Lions at No. 2, other observations coming out of 2022 NFL combine (Kenny Pickett is the No. 1 quarterback on a lot of boards, but his ceiling -- solid NFL starter -- is pretty much what the Lions already have in Goff, with better mobility. So spending a first-round pick on a guy who, if everything goes right, is just another version of what you already have, seems like a waste. That’s why I’ve been saying for a while that if the Lions draft a quarterback, it will be Liberty’s Malik Willis. Because while his bust potential is so much higher than Pickett’s, his ceiling is higher than any other quarterback in this class too. And he didn’t even have to run at the combine to show why.) O'HARA: What we learned from the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine (Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett's hand size was a discussion point going into the Combine. Anything below nine inches in the way the NFL measures hand width is considered to be a problem for a quarterback's ball security. Pickett was measured at 8.5 inches, substantially below the nine-inch limit. He's had issues with fumbles at Pitt, but he also threw 42 TD passes against seven interceptions in 2021. Bottom line: NFL scouts measure things for good reason. Inches and fractions don't mean everything, but they add up as part of the formula. Pickett and Hutchinson measured up as good football players. In viewing a video of the quarterback drills, Pickett looked at ease and was accurate in distributing the ball.) All-Combine Team: Who crushed it at each position? (Kenny Pickett (Best team fits: Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos.): The conversation regarding Pickett has been hyper-focused on his hand size, and while that might end up mattering down the road, it wasn't top of mind Thursday night. Pickett displayed the same composure that powered him to become a Heisman finalist in 2021, hitting receivers in stride and delivering the ball with confidence throughout his on-field workout. He also ran a 4.73-second 40-yard dash, which is pretty darn good, even in this new era of mobile quarterbacks. There's a high floor/ceiling difference between the Pitt product and Liberty's Malik Willis: Pickett seems to be the most pro-ready passer in this class with the capability to play early, while Willis' cannon for an arm and incredible athleticism have many dreaming of a dazzling future. This was certainly on display Thursday night in a class that didn't offer too many special glimpses otherwise.) 2022 NFL Draft: How the combine will impact draft boards (10. Yes, hand size matters - One of the "biggest" stories out of Indianapolis this week was that highly regarded senior quarterback Kenny Pickett's right hand officially measured in at 8.5 inches from pinkie to thumb. That makes his throwing hand significantly smaller than that of every signal-caller in the NFL last season and any quarterback selected in the draft in five years. Now, before you pass this off as the sort of minutia the media exaggerates but the NFL ignores, know that Pickett wore gloves at the University of Pittsburgh and at the Senior Bowl. When the weather turned sour during the week of practice, he did struggle with ball security, dropping multiple snaps while under center and spraying the ball on intermediate and deep passes. This was not just a case of a quarterback lacking familiarity with his center or receivers; Pickett averaged a fumble in every other game of his career at Pitt (26 in 52 games). Now, regardless of his small hands, Pickett remains in the conversation to be the first quarterback selected this spring. He is more polished than his peers, likely showing the anticipation, accuracy (in dry conditions, at least), athleticism, leadership and just enough arm strength to convince a club that he can be a franchise QB.) NFL Combine winners and losers: Malik Willis, Jordan Davis impress ahead of 2022 NFL Draft (Loser: Kenny Pickett hand talk - The Pitt quarterback passed for 4,319 yards, 42 TDs and seven interceptions in leading the Panthers to the ACC championship last season, but all the talk was about his hand measurement. Pickett's right hand measured at 8 ½ inches, and ESPN reports that would be smaller than any other NFL quarterback. Pickett has a double-jointed thumb and did exercises to stretch out his hands, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. All of this, of course, overshadowed Pickett's workout on the field, where he was impressive.) Broad jump: 10-foot-1): I’m only calling Pickett a “faller” for content purposes because everyone knew his hand size was going to be small heading into this. Winners and losers from Day 1 of scouting combine drills (Winner: Kenny Pickett, QB, Pitt: Pickett started his combine having to ask all kinds of questions about his hand size, and having that process double down when he was officially measured at 8.5 inches. All he could do then was refer people back to his tape, and impress during the throwing drills — which he did. Pickett did what he did throughout his collegiate career — he put on his gloves (which he’s work since his high school days in New Jersey), and he threw catchable ball after catchable ball. Pickett’s hand size may take him off some boards, but someone’s going to get a relatively ready NFL quarterback with Good Kirk Cousins ultimate upside.) NFL Combine takeaways: Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder star in QB workouts for 2022 draft (Kenny Pickett, Pitt (6-3, 217 pounds, 8 1/2-inch hands): Willis vs. Pickett comes down to the familiar debate of high ceiling later vs. high floor now. Willis might need time to fully tap into his upside, while Pickett is more seasoned and "pro-ready" based on his college playing experience. Pickett did choose to run, and he backed up his confidence with a 4.73 40-yard dash. He is a great athlete for his size, and he matches Willis' calm, confident demeanor with just the right amount of cockiness. When he was throwing, Pickett showed off strong touch and accuracy as he completed passes at different levels of the field. They likely had a good opportunity to speak with Pickett this week, and now they will want to see him on the field in the drills. While second overall might not be in play for Pickett, a pick later in the first round or early second round very well might be. Combine participants to watch for this week in Indianapolis (Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh: Perhaps the most-anticipated moment of the entire 2022 NFL Scouting Combine will be when Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett places his right hand on a table to get a measurement of his throwing hand. Pickett, who has a double-jointed right thumb, did not have his hand measured at the Senior Bowl and has been working to find a way to get a true and accurate measurement of his hand size at the Combine. Given that Pickett plays with gloves, and is rumored to have hands on the smaller side of the scale, this measurement is going to be scrutinized. Still, Pickett brings more than hand size to the table, and regardless of how that measurement clocks in teams are going to be intrigued by his decision making and growth over the past season. 6 Quarterbacks for Lions to Watch at NFL Scouting Combine (Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett: Seemingly by the day, more and more draft pundits have Pickett as their No. 1 quarterback in this year's draft class. As good as he was during his time at Pittsburgh, he's not worth taking at No. 2 overall or even with a top-10 pick. As The Draft Network's Joe Marino writes, "While Pickett showcased good ball placement in 2021, there are some misfires and the ball can sail on him. In addition, he is guilty of aggressive decisions both in terms of slotting throws but also in how he navigates the pocket and addresses pressure. If 2021 is an indication of what Pickett can be moving forward, then there is no doubt about his ability to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL. With that said, blending all the layers of the evaluation together makes Pickett an interesting case study." Rest assured, Lions scouts will be studying him this week in Indianapolis. And with a good showing, maybe, just maybe, he shoots up a team's draft board and becomes a top-10 pick.) NFL Combine Primer: QB hand size in the spotlight (How big will Kenny Pickett's hands be? I hate to start this article in this fashion. Believe me. I do. Hand-size stuff is mostly silly. But it matters. Especially when it comes to how early a quarterback will be picked. And we can mostly all agree -- Pickett's film in 2021 is awesome. Not flawless but loaded with big-time throws and improvisational brilliance. But #DraftTwitter will erupt if Pickett's hands are well under the nine-inch threshold most NFL teams have for the quarterback spot. It's a shame, really. Because there's not much evidence hand size correlates with the quality of quarterback play. But small hands just freak out NFL front offices, mostly surrounded by the thought that more fumbles will occur and in inclement weather, those quarterbacks will have recurring problems simply gripping the football. Regardless of the size of Pickett's hands, I didn't notice them hindering his ability at Pittsburgh in general or, specifically, in cold-weather games. But it will factor into his draft position in late April, and at the combine, it's really difficult to take anything of substance from a quarterback's performance on the field, so Pickett's hand size is a major storyline.) 2022 NFL combine: Detroit Lions staring down crowded group at top of this year’s ho-hum quarterback class (Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh): Kenny Pickett is the most NFL-ready quarterback in this class. The fifth-year senior is also fresh off a wildly impressive season while showing massive signs of growth. Pickett finished third in Heisman voting after throwing for 4,319 yards with 42 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He has never thrown for more than 3,098 yards or 13 touchdowns in any of the previous four seasons, so this was quite the leap. Pickett is the odds-on favorite to go first, so the Lions would need to think about him at Pick 2 or through a move up back into the order. He’s got the size at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds. He’s got the experience as a fifth-year player. And he’s got the arm that makes you think this is so much more than a one-year wonder. Pickett posted eye-popping elite grades through Pro Football Focus. They had his overall passing marks and deep, intermediate and those without pressure in elite territory. NFL insider notes: Kenny Pickett a likely Panthers pick at No. 6 and more draft insight from scouts and execs (Kenny Pickett had a very nice week in Mobile, Alabama. And very well may have cemented himself as a top-10 pick. I spoke to three top evaluators for teams all very much in need of a new starting quarterback, most likely to pursue that end through the draft if possible, and all three said essentially the same thing: Pickett is the most consistent and more ready QB in this draft, and he is quite likely going to be the first selected after a strong week of work at the Senior Bowl. "Coming off last week, you'd have to say that he's the guy," said one NFC evaluator with a long and strong history of selecting quarterbacks. "Pickett was the best of the bunch," said another NFC top executive. "I'm not sure it was all that close. He had a good week. There is a lot to like about him." Indeed, while we can obsess about hand size and such, the kid has a nice body of work at the college level, his hands didn't bother him playing in the elements at Pitt, he has a tremendous makeup, there are no character or off-field concerns and he rose to the occasion with the scouting world watching last week. It wasn't a tour de force or anything like that, just more than enough to cement himself as the safest call as the first quarterback to go in this draft, and to do so in the top third of the first round. In fact, several evaluators said that they could see him going in the top five, possibly, or very close to it. At a time in which DeShaun Watson's future is as murky as ever, and some in ownership circles believe his criminal and civil situation might end up being even more of a cause for concern than what is presently know, one of the former Pro Bowl QB's top former suitors is already being strongly connected to Pickett now, so early in this process. Word is, the Carolina Panthers are taking a strong shine to Pickett, which makes sense on multiple levels. The Panthers own the No. 6 pick. "I don't think he makes it past the Panthers," said one evaluator who has done extensive work on Pickett. "Their owner (David Tepper) is a huge Pitt booster. He hasn't invested draft capital in a quarterback yet. He has to know the Steelers like him (Tepper is a former minority investor in the Steelers). I think that's a fit." One AFC scout said: "We think he's going to Carolina. That where I would mock him." Again, it's very early here. We'll see what happens at the combine and on individual visits and such. But with some of this quarterback class dealing with injuries, or the aftermath of injuries, and few of them coming off truly standout seasons, this could be one of those years that plays out where the consensus top guy coming off the Senior Bowl ends up going top of the class. Right not that certainly looks like Pickett.) One thing learned about each QB at the Senior Bowl (Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Pickett's hand size is expected to be well below the general threshold of acceptability by traditional NFL standards. When the weather turned sour, Pickett struggled to drive the ball, but that was also true for every quarterback prospect not named Malik Willis. The way that translates to the field has been fumbles. TruMedia credits the quarterback with 36 fumbles over the past four years, which is tied for the second most behind Nebraska's Adrian Martinez. There is plenty to like in regards to his ability to process in the pocket. He has never thrown more than nine interceptions in a season. According to TruMedia, he ranked No. 51 among all quarterbacks with at least 200 pass attempts in sack percentage (5.9%). To his credit, over the last four seasons when Pickett has been the starter, Pittsburgh led all programs with 137 dropped passes. In 2021 alone, the Panthers were credited with 38 dropped passes. According to Wilson, he was said to be impressive in team interviews as well.) 2022 NFL Draft: Pros and cons for PFF's top five quarterbacks (4. KENNY PICKETT, PITTSBURGH PANTHERS (PFF Big Board Rank: 34) - PROS: Pickett's accuracy on the move is a big plus. He is pinpoint accurate outside the pocket. He can sting a far-hash out-route with ease. He also has obvious arm talent from the pocket and on the move. The 2021 Heisman finalist is mobile but always has his eyes downfield. He is terrific at creating space to work. CONS: Pickett holds the ball until the bitter end. He has the second-highest time to throw in the country. The quarterback has a bad habit of throwing off his back foot. It's worrisome how often he does so on vertical shots. Pickett is a one-year wonder. He's had one of the biggest single-season grading leaps we've seen during his fifth year.) NFL draft stock report after the 2022 Senior Bowl (Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh (Stock Down): Pickett didn't have the best week, and to me, it had nothing to do with his hand size. Throwing with the likes of Willis, Desmond Ridder, Carson Strong, and Sam Howell made Pickett's arm look relatively weak. He wasn't as sharp in the rainy practice either. While he didn't have an incompletion in the game, anyone worried that Pickett doesn't have high-end arm-talent traits got more fuel for the fire in Mobile.) 2022 NFL draft: Updated QB rankings, post-Senior Bowl (2. Kenny Pickett | Pitt: If NFL teams are looking for a more pro-ready passer, Pickett will probably be their top guy. He doesn’t have Willis’ high-end arm talent or athletic ability, but he’s more polished as a pocket passer, and followed up a solid week of practice with an impressive performance in the Senior Bowl game Saturday. Some teams will draw comparisons between Pickett and Joe Burrow, convincing themselves that he can be the guy to lead them to a Super Bowl sooner than later.) 2022 NFL Senior Bowl Recap (Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett had a solid showing in the Senior Bowl game completing 6-of-6 passes for 89 yards with a touchdown. Pickett led his scoring drive, finding a wide open tight end down the seam for a chunk gain and then threw a check down to Baylor running back Abram Smith which was turned into a 20-yard touchdown. Pickett did not electrify at the Senior Bowl, but he was solid enough to remain a projected first-rounder.) (2-6-22): https://walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2022recap.php

'22 draft: Six takeaways on Senior Bowl standouts (1. Pickett perfect. Pitt QB Kenny - Pickett certainly made the most of his chance at the Senior Bowl with perfect 6-of-6 passing for 89 yards and a touchdown pass to Baylor's Abram Smith, giving the National squad a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. It was perfect from a statistical standpoint, at least. His longest completion of 38 yards to North Dakota State's Christian Watson was significantly underthrown, but Watson made a very tough adjustment to catch the pass near his feet, fell untouched, then got up to extend the play another 20 or so yards before being tackled at the American 15. It all stemmed from a miscommunication, according to Pickett. "It wasn't the route he was supposed to run, but they busted a coverage," Pickett said. "It was supposed to be a corner route, but I kind of adjusted on the fly when I saw him kind of flash his hand real quick. I didn't want to overthrow him, because he was wide open. I just wanted to give him a chance to make a play." From there, after a false start penalty, Pickett found Smith uncovered in the right flat for an easy 20-yard score on his sixth and final pass of the game.) 2022 NFL Senior Bowl Quarterback Analysis (Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Kenny Pickett led the only touchdown drive between these teams in the first quarter. Most of the production came on two plays, with Pickett hitting a receiver for a 38-yard gain, then finding running back Abram Smith in the flat for a score on the next play. Despite the seven points on the drive, Pickett was not overly impressive. His 38-yard pass was late and underthrown as a consequence; had Pickett thrown the ball on time, he would've heaved a 53-yard touchdown. The ensuing score was a byproduct of a blown coverage; Smith was wide open. Pickett's late throw was not surprising, as this was an issue for him at Pittsburgh. Pickett showed another instance in which he had problems processing information, taking a sack because he held on to the ball too long. Pickett was a perfect 6-of-6 for 89 yards and a touchdown. However, he didn't play as well as those numbers indicate. He didn't perform poorly or anything, but those just looking at the box score will think he was pristine in this all-star game, which was not the case. 2022 NFL Draft Projection: Top 10) (2-5-22): https://walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2022quarterbacks.php
5 Takeaways from Week of Practice at Senior Bowl (All six of the quarterbacks in Mobile, Ala., had their moments, creating a week of ebbs and flows. Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett, considered currently to be the top prospect at the position, has heard concerns from draft pundits about his hand size, but had perhaps the most consistent week.) NFL draft: QB Malik Willis headlines winners and losers from the 2022 Senior Bowl (Winners - Pitt QB Kenny Pickett: Very little flash this week, but overall it was a reinforcement of the kind of quarterback Pickett might end up becoming. He profiles as a quarterback somewhere on the Jimmy Garoppolo-Tua Tagovailoa spectrum — the solid middle class of starters, we believe. And for QB-needy teams, Pickett likely could be a Day 1 starter considering his vast college experience and solid showing in unfamiliar surroundings in Mobile. Yes, the hand size (8 1/4 inches unofficially; he opted not to measure this week, waiting for the scouting combine) remains a storyline. But Pickett handled the ball pretty well in Wednesday's rain, helping his cause after fumbling 38 times in 52 college games. Teams that met with Pickett were impressed with his poise, temperament and preparedness, and Pickett's teammates appeared to respond favorably to his on-field communication between plays during practice. He tacked on a nice first-quarter showing in the game (6-for-6 passing, 89 yards, TD, only one off-target pass) and did nothing at all to change the fact he’s a likely first-rounder.) Final Senior Bowl QB Power Rankings: Malik Willis, Sam Howell steal the show (5. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: The only question surrounding Kenny Pickett at the Senior Bowl was his hand size. When he chose not to measure his hands during measurements, the questions continued to pile up. Yet, Pickett delivered sharp footballs with ample arm strength on what we would consider NFL throws. Pickett was terrific on out-breaking throws and even crossers on backside bootlegs. It was a great series of practice throws from Pickett, who, again, had little to prove except his hand size. Since he didn’t answer the question to the majority of those in attendance, it’s hard to say he won the week at the position while others did, in fact, answer their biggest questions.) 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl QB Review: Malik Willis and Desmond Ridder climbing up boards (KENNY PICKETT, PITTSBURGH PANTHERS (PFF Big Board Rank: 34): Pickett was the talk of the town Monday, as he was the lone quarterback to not get his hands measured. The Pittsburgh product is known for having incredibly small hands relative to his counterparts — so much so that he wears two gloves. Pickett said he wasn't measured because of being double-jointed, but that hasn’t quelled the concerns about his rumored 8.25-inch hands and how they might hold up in bad weather. Pickett hardly saw rain in a game this past season, but he earned a 37.2 passing grade when there was some type of precipitation in his college career. No NFL quarterback with sub-nine-inch hands has started a game in the past decade. On the second day of practice, both teams dealt with consistent rain at South Alabama’s stadium. And Pickett was unable to ease the concerns. He fumbled a snap and threw multiple uncatchable balls. Throughout the rest of the other practices, Pickett produced minimal big-time throws. He never had that “wow” moment that many were expecting. Overall, it was a disappointing week for the Pittsburgh product.) Senior Bowl notes: Rookie QBs, Patriots next offensive coordinator and more (Ask 20 scouts at the Senior Bowl to rank the six quarterbacks practicing in front of 32 NFL teams this week, and you’d probably receive 20 different answers. That’s what one executive told PFF on Thursday following the final Senior Bowl practice of the week before Saturday afternoon’s all-star game. The consensus seems to be that this is not a great year to need a young quarterback, though there are many teams who could use one. Nevada’s Carson Strong has injury concerns; Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe lacks zip; Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett didn’t have his hands measured, practiced with gloves and struggled throwing through a rainy Wednesday practice; Liberty’s Malik Willis has the best tools but lacks accuracy; and Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder and UNC’s Sam Howell didn’t exactly stand out from the crowd this week. (It’s worth noting that the last time I was at the Senior Bowl was in 2012 — I was busy covering AFC Championship Games while covering the New England Patriots in the meantime — when the quarterbacks were Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, Nick Foles, Brandon Weeden, Ryan Lindley and Kellen Moore. There were no true standouts that year, either, which goes to show that QBs can still have success without a stellar week in Mobile.)) NFL Rumors & Draft News: Bubble at NFL Combine and Aaron Rodgers on the move? (Sam Howell and Kenny Pickett most impressive quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl
Tomorrow (February 4), I’ll have a little more on how scouts stacked players at the Senior Bowl. But as far as the quarterbacks are concerned, the scouts I spoke with came away most impressed with Sam Howell and Kenny Pickett. Howell was consistently the most accurate passer in practice and rarely had passes get away from him. Furthermore, scouts loved his compact delivery, arm strength, and ability to throw the deep pass. Pickett played well, had some terrific interviews, and really impressed during quarterback meetings. There is some concern about Pickett’s hand size as it was obvious to many Pickett struggled to grip the ball during Wednesday’s rainy practice. Scouts were not impressed with Bailey Zappe, pointing out the lack of size and arm strength. Those I spoke with say Zappe is a late-rounder who could fall out of the NFL Draft completely.) 2022 Senior Bowl Rumors: Friday (Many years, we see quarterback prospects rise as the NFL draft approaches. Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett is the consensus top quarterback and likely to be the first signal-caller drafted. Liberty's Malik Willis, however, has impressed teams at the Senior Bowl with his powerful arm and athleticism. He could be a riser who ends up going as a top-20 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. NFL team sources shared with WalterFootball.com they believe the appropriate value for Willis and North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell are early in the second round. Given the demand for quarterbacks and teams pushing players up, both Willis and Howell have a real shot to go in the first round, especially Willis. Even though Willis and Howell are second-round-caliber players per many scouts' grades from last fall, Willis and Howell to a lesser extent could be the rising quarterbacks this year.) PFN's 2022 Senior Bowl Practice Report: National Team (Pickett struggled early on during 7-on-7 in the red zone. His receivers struggled to separate, and he made a few throws that were dangerous. However, he settled down by the third rep and did a good job making quick decisions and delivering accurate passes. The team period was clean both in the red zone and working between the 20s. He was decisive and accurate taking what the defense gave him.) (2-3-22): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2022-senior-bowl-practice-report-national-team/
Observations from the third day of 2022 Senior Bowl practices (Big fan: Consider me a Willis fan. After a so-so first day, I thought he was clearly the best quarterback on the American Team roster Wednesday and Thursday. The arm talent stands out, and he's got a real confidence and swagger about him as well. He fit some nice throws into tight windows in the red zone Thursday, and for the second straight day, used his legs as a weapon. I thought he and Pickett were the best quarterbacks here. Lions getting a good look at top QB prospects at Senior Bowl (Both Pickett and Ridder talked Wednesday about how consistency is the biggest trait they want to show off to the Lions, Jets and the 30 other teams watching from afar. "Everyone wants to say last season was kind of a flash in the pan," Pickett said of his 2021 season. "I think if you play at a high level for 13 games, I don't think that's by luck, so I want to come down here and show how consistent I am and play at a high level." Pickett's probably been the most consistent through the first two days of the six QBs down here.) 2022 Senior Bowl: Prospects with most to gain, lose (Most to Lose - Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh: Pickett (21st) had a monstrous 2021 season, an out-of-nowhere explosion of 42 touchdown passes at 67.1% completion with just seven interceptions. He's already cemented inside the first round of the draft. And unfortunately, all everyone wants to talk about regarding Pickett this week is his hand size. He didn't get his hands measured in Mobile, and there's speculation he's going to measure-in with hands well under the 9-inch threshold most teams have at the position. I'm fine with prospects competing at the Senior Bowl, but Pickett's situation feels like there's much more for him to lose than gain in Mobile this week.) Pickett did, however, prove he belongs with an NFL football in his hands as he was seen slinging it to all levels of the field. He was great on out-breaking throws and showcased great timing with his underneath crossing routes. The biggest discourse around Pickett was certainly his hand size measurements. Yet, he showcased enough power behind his throws that his measurements mean nothing after Day 1. He was great, save for a few underthrows and ill-timed shots. Pickett broke a 58-yard touchdown against Wake Forest in the Panthers' ACC title game victory, faking a slide along the way to dupe would-be tacklers. He appeared in 52 games for the Cougars and threw for 81 touchdowns and over 12,000 passing yards. With good size, velocity on his throws, accuracy, mobility, poise, and toughness, Pickett possesses the ability to layer throws down the field and make things happen with his legs. 2022 Senior Bowl Quarterbacks: Can Kenny Pickett, Carson Strong, or Sam Howell cement themselves as QB1? (Kenny Pickett will be the early talk of the town. Of all the quarterbacks with something to prove, Pickett may need to prove the most. For Pickett, as surprising as it sounds, his hand size measurements will be the talk of the town. As PFN Chief Draft Analyst Tony Pauline reported in December, Pickett’s hands may measure in at historically small numbers. But Pickett also reportedly has a double-jointed thumb that allows him to grip the football with his smaller-than-average hands. Again, as silly as it may sound to discuss his small hands, it will undoubtedly dominate the headlines early on. If Pickett does indeed measure in with small hands and showcases a double-jointed thumb, all eyes will turn to his on-field performances with an NFL football. Can Pickett drive the ball with strength? Will he make NFL-level throws on the field? Can Pickett develop a rhythm while getting the ball out of his hands on time? If he does, look for Pickett to cement himself as the top quarterback prospect this cycle.) (2-1-22): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2022-senior-bowl-quarterbacks/
Some observations from the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl weigh-in (The curious case of Kenny Pickett’s hands. Quarterback hand size is always a topic of discussion during NFL draft season. As a rule of thumb (no pun intended), anything over 9 inches is considered acceptable, while 10 inches or larger is highly desirable. Five of the six quarterbacks in Mobile this week had their hands measured, with the exception being Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett. According to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissaro, Pickett had an interesting reason for skipping that part of the weigh-in. He's got five years of college ball under his belt and might be the most ready to step in and play right way among this class.)(1-30-22): https://www.detroitlions.com/news/twentyman-10-players-to-watch-at-the-senior-bowl-lloyd-willis-dotson
NFL Draft: Introducing the top QB prospects (Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh - Strengths: Quick release, arm strength is solid. Keeps his head up after being forced out of the pocket. Athleticism isn't spectacular, but he gets the most out of his physical abilities when eluding rushers. Plays with high energy and is unafraid of making any throw. Loads of experience. Started 49 games for the Panthers. Can make anticipation throws. Weaknesses: His accuracy isn't a major flaw, but he's not surgically accurate. Tends to trust his arm a tick more than he should in improvisational situations. Only had one year of elite productivity in college and will turn 24 before his rookie season. 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Pre-New Year's Bowls 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Pre-New Year's Bowls (Up - Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh: Pickett made some wise decisions to close out 2021. Playing in Pittsburgh's bowl game offered him no upside and would only create an injury risk in a meaningless game. While Pickett won't play in the bowl, he did accept his Senior Bowl invitation, and that was a wise move. Pickett could end up spending a week with the Lions or Texans coaching staff and help convince them to take him high in the first round. NFL team sources say Pickett has excellent character, so the Senior Bowl interviews will give him an other opportunity to make that impression on everyone in the league. If he skipped the Senior Bowl, it would have been one less round of interviews to impress evaluators. After his dominant season, Pickett is the favorite to the first quarterback drafted, and his wise decisions has helped to improve those chances.) Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (6-3, 220 pounds): Pickett (6-3, 220 pounds) has gotten a lot of attention for the Panthers' fine offensive season in the ACC. He's the top traditional pocket-passing prospect in the class with his deep ball-accuracy, smarts and maturity. While calling it a “modernized Air Raid” may rightfully raise some eyebrows, it shares some resemblance: plenty of five-man protections, lots of short passes and primarily functioning out of 11 and 12 personnel. The lack of minutia leads to some head-scratchers, such as grouping Pickett’s offense in with 2019 LSU’s, but nevertheless, he performed well. His accuracy was well above average at all levels of the field. He also dealt with an average pressure rate, which is likely helped by the bevy of short passes but could also indicate quick decision-making skills. His accuracy numbers could also be inflated by throwing passes to the tremendous Addison. Pickett did not offer much on the ground despite a respectable amount of designed runs called for him and a top-15 scramble rate. There are some concerns about his hand size, but he had an average fumble rate to help soothe some of those worries. His statistical profile is similar to Dwayne Haskins as a prospect.) 2022 NFL draft: 5 quarterbacks to watch for the Detroit Lions (Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh: Kenny Pickett’s rise is something to behold. The fifth-year senior hit new levels in 2021, throwing for 4,319 yards with 42 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, earning an invitation to the Heisman ceremony. Pickett had 39 touchdown passes through his first four years at Pittsburgh. He’s started more games than any other quarterback in this draft, and his ability to move outside of the pocket -- fake slide or not -- is better than he gets credit for, adding 233 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He’s also Kiper’s top-ranked quarterback. Pro Football Focus ranks Pickett 20th overall but behind Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral in the positional rundown. Pickett was the second-best quarterback in the nation per PFF grades this year, standing among the best in the intermediate and deep passing game. His marks dip considerably under pressure, so that’s something to watch, but his experience and undeniable growth are hard to ignore. Pickett also falls into the tier of being someone who could sit behind Goff for a year, get a feel for the league, and take over in 2023.) Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh (6-3, 220) (Previous rank: No. 2): Pickett was in rhythm early in Pitt's 48-38 win over Virginia two weeks ago, zipping passes across the field and into tight windows. He kept his eyes downfield when avoiding rushers, throwing a touchdown to an open Jordan Addison at the back of the end zone in one such instance. Pickett threw interceptions on consecutive possessions, however, turning the ball over on a 50-50 pass at the end of the first half and when double-clutching a throw into Cover 2 at the start of the third quarter. Efficient in a 31-14 road win over Syracuse last week, he matriculated the ball down the field with short passes before impatiently launching a deep jump ball despite having a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter.) Pickett has put himself in Heisman contention while breaking program and conference records this season. For some, he’s the Joe Burrow-esque riser in the class that could capture the QB1 crown. Pickett has impressive arm talent, decent mobility, pocket awareness, and overall mental aptitude at the position. Arguably, he’s the most solid quarterback prospect in the class. 2022 NFL draft: Ole Miss' Matt Corral might be QB1, but it's a drop from recent drafts (2. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (Last week: 1st): The Pickett-Brennan Armstrong battle (more on this one below) was an absolute gas, a 48-38 shootout that came down to the wire. Pickett once again lit up the scoreboard with 340 yards and four TDs. But he also had some concerning moments as well, as he often tried to do too much or failed to handle pressure well. His interception before the half was strange but not offensive; it was, after all, a pseudo-Hail Mary (even if it came on second down and there were 19 seconds left as he launched the prayer). But the pick that immediately followed early in the third quarter was a classic "what was that?" throw into heavy traffic. It never should have been attempted. But the more pressure UVA threw at Pickett, the less comfortable he looked. He does a nice job resetting his feet and delivering strikes, but we've seen Pickett get greedy at times and hold onto the ball too long, allowing too much pressure to enter his kitchen. On what ended up as the game-clinching TD pass, Pickett (throwing across his body) underthrew Jordan Addison and frankly should have been intercepted, with the precocious receiver bailing out his QB with a great play on the ball. We remain Pickett fans on the whole, but there are some concerning elements to his game that can't go overlooked.) 2022 NFL draft: Kenny Pickett-Sam Howell duel, Phil Jurkovec's return tilt QB rankings (2. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (Last week: 1st): Pickett and UNC's Sam Howell engaged in a fascinating, rain-soaked battle on Thursday, a game that was attended by more than three dozen NFL evaluators, including four GMs: the Steelers' Kevin Colbert, the Eagles' Howie Roseman, the Raiders' Mike Mayock and the Broncos' George Paton. (Vikings GM Rick Spielman was expected to attend but did not.) Pickett was on fire early, throwing for 208 yards and two TDs in the first half. But as the rain fell harder, the less accurate his passes were. Pickett made some curious decisions, including a potentially disastrous pass that should have been picked late. In the end, Pickett and the Panthers gathered themselves for a gutsy series in the first OT, doing just enough to win. Credit to the QB for that after he really scuttled late in regulation. Detroit Lions 2022 draft watch: Top QBs face-off on Thursday night (Kenny Pickett, Quarterback, Pittsburgh (Senior)
6-foot-2, 219 pounds: Pickett is one of, if not the biggest riser among quarterbacks in this draft class. That late-career developmental surge, along with stylistic similarities, has drawn some to compare him to Joe Burrow, but I believe it’s premature to start lifting him up to those levels just yet. I did profile Pickett ahead of his game against Clemson, calling it a pivotal game for him, especially after throwing four interceptions in their 2020 matchup. Pickett answered the bell, completing 25 of 39 for 309 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions, on his way to a 27-17 victory. Pickett has a live arm, can make throws all over the field, and has shown confidence in his decision making which has led to improved play. His accuracy has rapidly increased and he has shown some mobility in and out of the pocket, which is an upward trending skill quarterbacks need in today’s NFL. The biggest factor working in Pickett’s favor may be Lions’ coach Dan Campbell’s relationship with his mentor Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells. Parcells’ developed a system for drafting quarterbacks, affectionately known as “the Parcells rules”, that many analysts have followed for years. Now, the game has shifted in how it evaluates the position, but for a coach who values an old school approach, it’s worth taking a look at these rules and how they heavily favor Pickett. Rule 1: The QB must be a three-year starter — Pickett is in his fourth year as a starter.
Rule 2: Must be a college senior — Check.
Rule 3. Must graduate from college — Check.
Rule 4: Must start at least 30 games — Pickett has started 44 ahead of this game.
Rule 5: Must score two TDs for every interception thrown — Pickett has a career 68:28 ratio and 29:3 this season!
Rule 6: Must complete at least 60 percent of his pass attempts — 62.3 percent over his career, 68.7 in 2021.
Rule 7: Must win at least 23 games — Pickett has led the Panthers to 28 victories.
The biggest drawback to successfully achieving all of these rules is you typically end up with a quarterback that is older than what teams prefer in today’s NFL. For example, Pickett will turn 24 years old in June, which isn't ideal for a top prospect. On the flip side, the rules are designed to uncover quarterbacks who can step on the field immediately and with their level of experience, should not be rattled at the next level. Successful examples of full qualifiers include Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Russell Wilson to name a few. Is this immediate availability a priority for the Lions who are early on in a rebuild and have Jared Goff under contract for at least another year? Maybe not. Then again, it may be exactly what they need.) We're still seeing some looser play from Pickett in recent games. Slightly errant throws, too many hits and sacks taken and average efficiency against teams that rush effectively with four. Overall, though, he's had the cleanest body of work of the 2022 QB class, we feel, and even has added a slight dimension to his game with his improved scrambling. It'll never be his forte, but it's yet another area of improvement in his much-needed fifth year of college experience.) Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh, 6-foot-2, 220, rSR: Although he was picked off twice in Pitt’s 38-34 loss to Miami, Pickett threw for a career-high and school-record 514 yards in the game. He also passed Hall of Famer Dan Marino for most touchdowns responsible for in Panthers’ history, with 84 overall scores. Pickett lacks Marino’s rocket arm, but he’s smart, accurate and deceptively athletic. In a below-average class for quarterbacks, Pickett might be the safest bet of the bunch. ) (11-6-21):https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-draft-big-board-kayvon-thibodeaux-ranks-no-1-but-dbs-dominate-2022-class

He's the top traditional pocket-passing prospect in the class with his deep ball-accuracy, smarts and maturity. Detroit Lions 2022 NFL draft watch: Meet two top QB prospects facing off at noon Saturday (Kenny Pickett, Pitt: Pickett’s losses this season — to Western Michigan and Miami (Florida) — have almost been more impressive than his wins; the redshirt senior was 72-for-86 (72.1%) passing for 901 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Then again, in Pitt’s six wins — against UMass, Tennessee, New Hampshire, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Clemson — Pickett is 145-for-213 (68.1%) for 1,854 yards, 15 touchdowns and no interceptions.) 2022 NFL draft: Can Nevada's Carson Strong end up as QB1? (1. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh
(Last week: 1st): It was a tale of two games on Saturday for Pickett. On the one hand, Pickett passed Dan Marino for most touchdowns responsible for in school history and posted the first 500-yard passing game in Panthers history. On the other, Pickett threw a disastrous interception late to help deliver a victory to Miami, one of two interceptions in the game. Trailing 38-34 with 4:07 remaining, Pickett just seemed to misfire to a wide-open Jordan Addison, with the ball ending up in the hands of Miami's James Williams. Pickett's first INT was also regrettable, as he appeared to stare down his target, having his pass undercut by Tyrique Stevenson, whose 39-yard return set up an eventual Miami TD that gave the Hurricanes a 31-17 halftime lead. It was really the first time since the Western Michigan game back in mid-September that Pickett played a sloppy game — even with some fireworks. You can probably count on one hand the number of truly bad throws Pickett has made this season, but two of them came on Saturday. Is he QB1? It's likely we cannot at all say that with certainty. This debate rages on.) (11-1-21): https://sports.yahoo.com/2022-nfl-draft-can-nevadas-carson-strong-end-up-as-qb-1-154715450.html
Stock Watch: Shaky Saturday (Stock Down: Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Just when it seemed like Kenny Pickett was riding a Mac Jones-style wave to the top of the first round, the scheduling gods threw a bit of a halt to that wave. In the form of Miami. Despite being double-digit underdogs, Miami went into Heinz Field and knocked off Pickett and the Pittsburgh Panthers, 38-34. Pickett was not bad in the game, completing 39 of 55 passes for a whopping 519 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw a pair of interceptions, including this one in the game’s final minutes. Now, it seemed there might have been some miscommunication between quarterback and receiver on this play, given the placement. Still, after last week’s impressive win over Clemson, the sight of Pittsburgh having this kind of let down game is going to linger in the minds of many. The Panthers are still in solid position in the ACC Coastal standings, and on Saturday Pickett broke a touchdown record set by Dan Marino decades ago, so all is not lost for player and team. But both Pickett and the Panthers will need to turns things around after this loss to ensure a bid in the ACC Championship game.) He owns the lowest negatively graded throw rate in the entire country and has just one turnover-worthy play from a clean pocket. When free from pressure this season, Pickett has posted an FBS-best 93.7 passing grade. He has yet to earn a passing grade below 75.0 in 2021 and is fresh off posting the highest PFF grade of any quarterback to face Clemson this year (80.3).) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 8 (Up - Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh: Pickett was 25-of-39 for 302 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in Pittsburgh's big win over Clemson. After a slow start, Pickett got in a rhythm and showed his patience, poise, and competitiveness. He threw the ball accurately to all levels of the field while avoiding turnovers. Late in the fourth quarter, Pickett used his legs to run for multiple first downs to kill the clock and prevent a comeback by the Tigers. While Pickett is not a freak athlete with running ability like a Lamar Jackson or Cam Newton, Pickett has some functional mobility and toughness as a runner, similar to Joe Burrow. Pickett also does not have a cannon for an arm like a Josh Allen or Matthew Stafford, but he has a capable arm that can make all the throws, similar to Derek Carr. Thus, Pickett has the skill set to be a starter in the NFL. He is still not getting a lot of media hype and buzz for the 2022 NFL Draft, he is a rising prospect who could catch fire in the months to come if he finishes out the season dominating the way he has in the first half of the year.) 2022 NFL draft: Liberty's Malik Willis tries to crash top of QB power rankings (1. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (Last week: 2nd): In his first outing versus Clemson, way back in the 2018 ACC championship game, Pickett and the Panthers were completely overwhelmed. The Tigers sacked Pickett three times, forcing one fumble, and he finished the game with four completions in 18 attempts for a net 8 passing yards and an interception. Pickett faced coordinator Brent Venables' defense again last season, and once more it was a trial by fire. At the end of what would be a 52-17 blowout in Death Valley, Clemson led 31-0 at the end of the first quarter. Pickett started the game a horrific 3 for 11 passing for 15 yards, four picks and a sack, and it really never got much better after that. That's why Saturday's dominant performance against the Tigers — even if this isn't a vintage Clemson team — is so notable. This is a program that had owned him and his team, and yet after a slow start Pickett completed 25 of 39 passes (with four drops and three throwaways) for 302 yards, two TDs and zero turnovers. ) (10-25-21): https://sports.yahoo.com/2022-nfl-draft-libertys-malik-willis-tries-to-crash-top-of-qb-power-rankings-191922092.html
College Football Week 8 Takeaways: Notable grades, advanced stats & more (KENNY PICKETT: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY - Not much was expected from Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett in his fifth year, especially after posting PFF grades of 60.6, 75.0 and 69.8 his first three years as the starter. But Pickett silenced the doubters to open the year by posting a Power Five leading 92.9 passing grade over his first six starts. The one question mark hovering over that hot streak was the fact that the opening slate was the third-easiest run in the Power Five, making Week 8’s matchup against Clemson yet another chance to prove critics wrong. Despite the team's struggles in 2021, Clemson still has one of the top defenses in the country. They entered the week ranked top-five in the Power Five in both explosive pass play rate and yards per play allowed. The Tigers have also been a defense Pickett has struggled with in the past. Pickett broke that trend on Saturday by recording a 77.0 passing grade in Pitt’s win over Clemson. Not only was that Pickett’s best against Clemson in his career, but it was by far the best by any quarterback against the Tigers in the 2021 season. This performance against a stout defense proved that Pickett’s breakout is the real deal. As a result, the team is on for its first double-digit win season since their days in the Big East.) Detroit Lions 2022 draft watch: 10 prospects to watch this Saturday (QB Kenny Pickett: With several of the anticipated top quarterbacks in this draft class struggling this season, signal-callers who have consistently performed have seen their stock rise. Pickett was projected as a Day 3 pick if he declared last draft cycle, but he opted to return to boost his stock, and that decision has paid off. For those looking for the next Joe Burrow in this draft class, Pickett is the name to know. While being selected first overall seems a ways off still, he has now worked his way into the first-round conversation with his accuracy and decision making. Pickett enters this game with a 70 percent completion percentage, nearly 2,000 passing yards (through six games), 21 passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, and just one interception. In 2020, Pickett threw nine interceptions over nine games, but four of them came against Clemson. Pickett surely has this game circled on his calendar, and with revenge on his mind, he will have a chance to prove how far he has developed his game. If he impresses, his stock will continue to rise and who knows how far it will climb.) 2022 NFL Draft: Evaluating the quarterback class at midseason (Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh, 6-2, 220, Redshirt Senior: Corral might be the flashiest of this year’s quarterback candidates, but the fastest riser is unquestionably Pickett. The redshirt senior entered the 2021 season with 36 career starts under his belt. Perhaps in large part due to that experience, Pickett plays with better command and poise than many of his peers, looking off defenders and routinely making safe passes while also demonstrating the ability to throw strikes. Pickett entered the season with a solid 39-25 touchdown-to-interception ratio in his first four years at Pitt, but his game has jumped to another stratosphere in 2021, with him completing a little less than 70% of his passes for a sparkling 21 TDs with just one pick. Further, while not the same caliber athlete as his peers, Pickett is no slouch, generating 740 yards and 18 scores on the ground, including 11 the past two years (three in 2021). Even better, he complements his "sneaky" athleticism with good spatial awareness, buying time in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield for late-breaking receivers. The concerns with Pickett are that he possesses just average size and a strong enough arm (but not a howitzer), as well as the fact that his ascension has come so suddenly. Prior to this year’s breakout, Pickett had completed "just" 60.4% of his passes with a combined 26 touchdowns (and 18 interceptions) in his previous 21 games. Further, he missed three games the prior two seasons due to injury. However, if teams are going to talk themselves into drafting a quarterback in the first round, Pickett appears to be the safest of the bunch at this point. It has been 38 years since a Pitt quarterback was selected in the first round. That passer — some guy named Marino — went on to become a Hall of Famer, and he was the sixth quarterback selected in his famed class. Pickett won’t have to wait that long, and he might wind up being the first QB drafted this year.) 2022 NFL draft: How high can Pitt's Kenny Pickett rise in QB power rankings? (2. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (Last week: 4th): Pickett really has ascended to the level of prospect where the first round isn't out of the question. Whether he deserves to be taken that high in a "typical" QB year is up for debate; it's pretty clear to most observers that this year's class is going to be a beauty-in-the-eye-of-the-beholder lot. But there's no denying how he's evolved as a passer and improved in several little areas to this point. Experience has helped him immensely, and we suspect Pickett will be rewarded in a big way for his decision to come back to school, even with the inevitable hand-size questions coming. Even with a hypothetically strong Senior Bowl and post-season performance a year ago, we didn't see him as a first-, second- or third-round pick then. Now it's becoming clear he's likely landing in the top 50 selections in 2022 at the rate we're going. Pickett was in command Saturday at Virginia Tech against a good defense. He made throw after on-target throw, even if several were dropped — six by PFF's count, and that might be kind. Despite that, he took what the defense gave him, executed TD drives of 94, 81 and 52 yards, plus a 76-yard drive to close the game out.) 2022 NFL Draft QB Watch: Corral, Levis improving (Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Stock up; Pickett is a big quarterback that throws a beautiful deep ball. He demonstrates good pocket presence and an ability to throw on the run but he has had a tendency of throwing into coverage. In 2021, the senior is taking much better care of the football. In six games, he has thrown 21 touchdowns to just one interception, in addition to three rushing touchdowns. On this particular play in this week's win over Virginia Tech, Pickett stands tall in the pocket knowing that pressure is coming, waits for wide receiver Jared Wayne to get even with the defensive back and then leads him into the soft spot of the zone for a walk-in touchdown.) Stock Watch: Desmond Ridder, Brennan Armstrong make some noise (Stock Steady: Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: The Pittsburgh Panthers moved into the biggest stretch of their season on Saturday, with a visit to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech. Quarterback Kenny Pickett, who has been one of the biggest stories of the college football season, continued his stretch of great play with another solid performance. Pickett completed 22 of 37 passes for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns, the first one coming on this throw down in the red zone. Pickett reads out the double-slant/flat concept, taking the easy throw to the flat for the score. His second touchdown had a higher level of difficulty. Now, the receiver is wide open, but Pickett has to feel the rush on this play, and he subtly slides in the pocket away from the looping defender coming on the stunt, and gets off the throw to take advantage of the coverage for the touchdown. Pickett and the Panthers still have some big games coming up, including Clemson next week, and then both UNC and Virginia later in the season. But with what he has done to date, Pickett might have helped himself more than any other collegiate passer this year.) 2022 NFL draft midseason winners and losers: 3 QBs moving up, 4 trending down (Winners - Pitt QB Kenny Pickett: Let’s get this part out of the way: Pickett’s 8 1/4-inch hands are going to be an issue for some teams. Not all teams, but some. It surely will cause internal debate with a few clubs. If you'll notice, he wears two gloves when he plays, just like another smaller-handed QB, Teddy Bridgewater. Then again, 8 1/4 inches are about as small as we can recall. Nine is a common floor for some teams worried about ball security, especially for worse-weather franchises. But Pickett is doing everything you could ask and more — albeit vs. a subpar schedule to date — as perhaps the most unexpected senior riser this college football season. He is completing 72% of his passes, with a 19-1 TD-INT ratio. Even vs. a few cupcakes, it’s an improved performance. Pickett might be the most improved quarterback in the country. His arm strength looks vastly different over the past two years, and now he has pushed himself into the Day 2 discussion (with his eyes on Round 1) after entering the year with mostly early- and mid-Day 3 grades.) 2022 NFL draft: Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler sinks in QB power rankings after Texas benching (4. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh
(Last week: 7th): This is a precipitous jump for a player who was on bye this past weekend. Call it an overcorrection. Pickett's play this season, even while feasting against lesser opponents, has been off the charts. We still don't know if we'd project him as a starting NFL prospect, but he has some Kirk Cousins to his game.) No quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft class is the clear-cut No. 1 overall pick (Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (Redshirt Senior) What’s to like: Experience - As it stands right now, Pickett has 1,600 career dropbacks — the second most of any quarterback currently in college football. After never recording more than 13 touchdown passes in his three previous seasons as a starter, Pickett already has 19 this year. He’s seen the largest year-over-year grade increase of any quarterback in the country, going from 69.8 last year to 92.6 now. Pickett being on the NFL radar is nothing new, as the man has been flashing a live NFL-caliber arm ever since he took over as the starter in 2018. His red hot start to 2021 could very well be due to his experience creating an abundance of confidence. Why we’re worried: Late Bloomer - Pickett has lit college football on fire over the first five weeks this season. He’s also faced UMass, Tennessee, Western Michigan, New Hampshire and Georgia Tech. It would be a surprise if he wasn’t lighting college football on fire with that schedule. He had three seasons prior to this that showed a much more inconsistent passer. It’s difficult to believe this hot start will continue throughout the season, especially considering he still has a habit of holding onto the ball too long. His 3.25-second average time to throw this season is the longest of any quarterback in the country. Verdict: Wait and See - He came back for a fifth year because he was a fringe draftable prospect on tape in 2020. I'll need to see him face a few real defenses before I’m willing to move him up too much higher than that.) He continued his impressive 2021 season by ripping a Georgia Tech defense that had an excellent showing in knocking off North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell a week earlier. Versus the Yellow Jackets, Pickett completed 23-of-36 passes for 389 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder has been an accurate rhythm passer, showing some running ability and toughness. 2022 NFL draft: Spencer Rattler, Malik Willis neck and neck in QB prospect power rankings (7. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh
(Last week: 7th): The big surprise this season has been Pickett's high-level performance. We've always been fans to a degree, especially after some encouraging patches in 2020. This season has been one big leveling up for Pickett, whose arm strength appears improved and his consistency worlds better. Pitt pass catchers still seem to, uh, not always catch passes they should — four more drops in the win at Georgia Tech. Even with 10 Panthers drops (per PFF) through five games, Pickett is completing 72% of his passes with a 19-1 TD-INT ratio and an average of 10.3 yards per attempt (up from 7.3 a year ago). He entered the season earning mostly fourth- and fifth-round grades. He has risen above that level so far.) He put forth another dominant effort in Week 5 against Georgia Tech to round out an incredible first five games. Against the Yellow Jackets, Pickett went 23-of-36 for 389 yards and 4 touchdowns. NFL draft prospects for the Lions to watch in college football Week 5 (Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh: Pickett was a player many thought would enter the 2021 NFL draft, but he opted to return to Pittsburgh for another year. So far, it’s been a smart decision. Pickett has helped himself by improving his accuracy and looking more confident in his movement skills. His connection with sophomore WR Jordan Addison is electrifying. It’s evidence Pickett can exploit defenses with a premium talent at wideout down the field, something he had not really shown in his Panthers tenure. It was a 56-7 laugher by the time Pickett's day was done following the first drive of the third quarter. Pickett has been mostly outstanding this season. NCAA QB Stock Watch: Kenny Pickett stays hot, Spencer Rattler looks shaky it (Stock Up: Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh - At this rate, we might need a different designation for Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett each week, as “stock up” might be underselling things. Pickett continued his scorching September with an impressive outing Saturday against New Hampshire. He completed 24 of 28 passes for 403 yards and five touchdowns, without an interception, as the Panthers rolled 77-7 over the FCS-level Wildcats. Here’s how his September ended up. Perhaps the standout throw of the day from Pickett came early in the third quarter, on this deep shot to Jordan Addison on the post route. As we mentioned in an earlier edition of Stock Watch, the month of October could truly propel Pickett’s draft stock into the stratosphere. The Panthers have road games at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech to start the month, then finish with Clemson, and Miami, at home. If he performs nearly as well as he has to start the season as the Panthers kick off their conference slate, we could be talking about a Mac Jones-style rise.) Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh (Last week: 9th): What a weird day for Pickett, who threw for six TDs against Western Michigan but also suffered an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter and watched the Panthers' defense blow it late. The injury hurts the most, even if we don't know the severity of it. (Pickett did return to the game, however.) Stock Watch: Tyler Shough, Malik Willis among the impressive passers in Week 3 (Stock Up: Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh - Kenny Pickett continues to impress this season. Even though the Pittsburgh Panthers lost at home to Western Michigan, Pickett did more than enough to lead the Panthers to victory. Pickett completed 23 of 31 passes for 382 yards and six touchdowns, against just a single interception, helping Pittsburgh put 41 points on the board. He got Pittsburgh on the board early with this touchdown pass, rolling first to his left before flipping his hips and hitting the deep crossing route working away from him for six. He showed more arm talent, and athleticism, on this touchdown from the second quarter, finding Jordan Addison behind the defense for the score. Pickett’s numbers today moved him into second place in school history for passing yardage, past Dan Marino and now just behind Alex Van Pelt in the record books. You can anticipate that record, along with some more, will fall to Pickett before this season is over.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 2 (Up - Kenny Pickett, QB, Pittsburgh: NFL advance scouts gave Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett a draft-able grade entering the season, and he supported that projection by leading Pittsburgh to an impressive road victory at Tennessee. Pickett used his arm, legs, vision and intelligence to pick apart the Volunteers' defense. It was an excellent performance that will really help his draft grade. Versus Tennessee, Pickett completed 24-of-36 passes for 285 yards with two touchdowns. He also ran for 19 yards and another score. Pickett was accurate as a passer, showing a quality arm and the ability to throw a very catchable ball. His field vision to work through progressions, his usage of his feet to buy time, and his ability to make plays off schedule were also very impressive. Pickett used his feet when he had to and didn't panic in the face the rush. While Pickett may not have an elite arm, size, or running ability, he looked like a potential second-day or mid-round candidate against the Volunteers.) 2022 NFL draft: Quarterback prospect power rankings, Week 3 (9. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: We spotlighted Pickett heading into the Tennessee game, and he lived up to his billing with a fine outing to help pull the upset in the type of setting where the Panthers frequently have not been able to capitalize in recent years. Pickett isn’t for everyone, but his toughness, ability to throw on the move and underrated arm talent give him a shot.) 2022 NFL Draft QB Watch: Nevada's Carson Strong (Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: Back in January, Kenny Pickett had an invitation to the Senior Bowl but instead opted to return to Pittsburgh for his final season. And based on what we saw on the road against Tennessee it was a great decision. Pickett finished with 285 yards, two first-rate touchdown passes and no turnovers, and it he did it while completing 67% of his throws (24 of 36). It was a marked improvement from what we saw from Pickett at points during the 2020 campaign where his toughness was one of his best attributes but a maddening lack of consistency made it hard to get a feel on his game. There were no such concerns on Saturday afternoon; Pickett was throwing lasers all over the yard, mostly on short and intermediate routes. And it was his mobility -- both in the pocket and when he opted to run -- and, more importantly, his accuracy that was so impressive to watch. Here's Pickett's first touchdown pass, on a first-quarter drive that saw him go 5-for-5. And here's his second touchdown, a well-placed strike on a quick slant that solidified the Panthers' fourth-quarter lead. Pickett isn't in the Top 50 conversation just yet, and we'll be honest, we had a Day 3 grade on him after the 2020 season. But he had a stellar performance against the Vols and he'll get a chance to continue to prove himself next month during a three-game stretch against Virginia Tech, Clemson and Miami.) Stock Watch: Kenny Pickett shines, Sam Howell and Spencer Rattler bounceback (Stock Up: Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: It came as a bit of a surprise last December when Kenny Pickett announced he would utilize an NCAA waiver and return to Pittsburgh for a fifth season. That decision could end up paying off for Pickett in a huge way. Instead of entering last year’s draft class, one that saw five quarterbacks in the first fifteen selections, Pickett has a chance to make a name for himself in a potentially wide-open 2022 quarterback group. So far, the returns are overwhelmingly positive. After opening the season with a pair of touchdown throws against Massachusetts, Pickett and the Pittsburgh Panthers went into Knoxville and knocked off Tennessee, with the QB throwing for two more touchdowns and completing 66.7% of his throws. The passer flashed some athleticism and arm talent on this touchdown to open the second quarter, giving the Panthers their first points of the game. Not only is this an athletic play from Pickett, but the throw — specifically the velocity and the placement — stand out as well. His second touchdown came in the fourth quarter, as he found Jordan Addison on the slant route to extend Pittsburgh’s lead. Once more, you see perfect placement from the quarterback, as he puts this right on the upfield shoulder and away from the leverage of the nearest defender. Through two games, Pickett has certainly made a name for himself early in this draft cycle. Keep an eye on October, as Pittsburgh plays Virginia Tech, Clemson and Miami to close out that month. If he continues to shine, including during that stretch, his draft stock could go through the roof.) NFL draft: Oregon's Kayvon Thibodeaux leads our 5 prospects to watch this week (Pitt QB Kenny Pickett: Pickett was dialed in against UMass last week in what amounted to a warmup game to start the season (27 of 37 passes completed, 272 yards, two TDs, four dropped passes). The redshirt senior has a much stiffer test this weekend at Rocky Top. The Vols weren’t perfect last week defensively against Bowling Green, but they settled down quickly after two long field-goal drives. This secondary has some lower-end NFL talent in CBs Alontae Taylor and Kenneth George, and safeties Trevon Flowers and Theo Jackson (last week’s star with 2.5 tackles for loss, three passes defended). The pass rush also was hot last week. Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett has a
Pickett is a gutsy performer with more arm talent — especially throwing on the move — than he’s sometimes given credit for. But is he special? Can he stay healthy? And can Pickett earn a statement victory in tough surroundings? Two years ago, Pickett led Pitt to a big comeback vs. UCF, and last season he was solid in the win over a decent Louisville team. Otherwise, he has come up short in some of the Panthers’ biggest games — even though Pickett typically hasn’t received the help he needs in matchups against the biggest foes. This game could help improve Pickett’s stock. He came into his fifth college season earning mostly fourth- to fifth-round draft grades, but a handful of teams believe he could end up going higher.) Top 15 Quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft: Carson Strong’s strong start (11. Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh: A seasoned veteran, Kenny Pickett averaged just over 10 yards per completion, finishing the season-opener against UMass by completing 27-of-37 passes for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns. Pickett is a talented middle-of-the-field thrower and can increase his draft stock by developing a downfield passing game. He thrives on short-area throws and running a heavy outside-zone rushing attack for Pat Narduzzi and Co. at Pittsburgh. Pickett has more than a few game-changing highlight moments in his career despite being labeled as a game manager to box-score scouts. If he can showcase more of those moments in 2021 while improving accuracy downfield, this will be his floor as a draft prospect.) ACC 2022 NFL Draft prospects and scouting reports (Kenny Pickett, QB | Grade: 3.39 | Projected Round: 6th: Quarterback Kenny Pickett draws a variety of opinions, as scouts grade him as a late-rounder and some outside the scouting community stamp him as a Day 2 pick. I presently have Pickett graded as an early sixth-round prospect. Pickett is a terrific leader of the offense, and he protects the ball and accurately delivers throws with solid placement. I like his intangibles a lot, but his arm strength concerns me. Pickett struggles to deliver the ball with speed and cannot drive deep throws, nor is he a threat to pick up yardage with his legs. I like Pickett, but I like him as a third quarterback on Sundays.) (8-12-21): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/acc-draft-prospects-and-scouting-reports-for-2022-nfl-draft/2/
2022 NFL Draft: UNC's Howell, Clemson highlight ACC preview (Quarterback Kenny Pickett might be the source of some head scratching plays, but his size and arm talent will entice NFL teams. Pickett's ceiling likely will not reach the first round, but Day 2 is not unrealistic. His pass catchers did him few favors a year ago. He has moderate mobility.) 2022 NFL draft: 12 QB-prospect matchups we can't wait for this season (3. Sam Howell vs. Kenny Pickett: Howell is second only to Rattler for early odds on next year’s top overall NFL draft pick at +350, per BetMGM. How Howell responds to losing his top two running backs and top two receivers will tell us a lot about how highly he’s regarded by season’s end. Although Howell has a fairly strong arm and has been money in crunch time the past two seasons, he’s not all that physically impressive, has been operating in a friendly Air Raid system and must rely on new playmakers. Facing off with him in this matchup is the plucky Pickett, who seemed to improve his arm strength and his consistency last season. We assumed he’d come out this past draft cycle, but a midseason ankle injury derailed Pickett. Can he stay healthy and deliver one complete season? Pickett will turn 24 next June, so he’s on the older side.) (6-11-21): https://sports.yahoo.com/2022-nfl-draft-there-are-some-terrific-qb-prospect-matchups-this-season-160032914.html
