NFL Draft bust candidates: Malik Willis, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Drake London and the riskiest picks in 2022 (There are other quarterbacks that could sneak into the first round as well. Desmond Ridder has been rising in mock drafts. He won a lot as a four-year starter in college, but he doesn't have the biggest arm. Matt Corral could also sneak into Day 1. He's a gritty competitor, but he's small and has to improve his field-reading ability at the NFL level.) NFL Draft: Meet the top four quarterback prospects in the class (Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss - Bio: Corral graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic (by way of Oaks Christian) and was considered a top-10 recruit in the state of California. After initially committing to USC and then Florida, the SoCal native ultimately enrolled at Ole Miss. He was named the Rebels' starter in 2019 and ended the year with a 4-8 record.  Things changed for the better when Lane Kiffin arrived on campus in 2020. Remaining the team’s starter, Corral improved his previous season numbers, completing over 70 percent of his passes for 3,337 yards and 29 TDs while additionally leading the Rebels to a victory over Indiana in the Outback Bowl.  He followed that up with another solid effort in 2021, becoming just the third Ole Miss QB to record 20 passing TDs in back-to-back seasons. Corral’s season ended on a down note, however, as the 23-year-old suffered a high ankle sprain in the first quarter of the Sugar Bowl and had to be carted off the field. Ole Miss ended up losing to Baylor, 21-7.  Pros: Above-average arm talent, can throw off-platform, good timing and footwork when scrambling, agile and elusive runner, fierce competitor.  Cons: Lacks touch and anticipation as a passer, slim frame that might preclude him from being an effective rusher at the next level.  NFL Comp: Baker Mayfield.  Fantasy Fit: Corral is an absolute crowd pleaser, seemingly fueled by his surrounding energy. Both his person and his game, however, require structure to remain successful. That’s part of what makes his landing spot so important … not just to fantasy, but to the viability of his NFL career.  For fake football purposes, I don’t imagine his redraft stock will be at all robust. Especially if he lands in Washington — as draft expert Eric Edholm thinks he might; the depth chart and surrounding ecosystem aren’t set up for Corral’s immediate FF success.) (4-26-22):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-draft-meet-the-top-four-quarterback-prospects-in-the-class-150408593.html

2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Quarterbacks (5. MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS (BIG BOARD RANK: 53):  Corral lost his top weapons from 2020 but didn't see his game slip this fall. He also protected the ball a lot better, recording only 10 turnover-worthy plays all season.) 2022 NFL Draft: Perfect pairings for the eight teams with two first-round picks (Detroit Lions - First-round picks: No. 2 and No. 32.  Needs: QB, EDGE, CB.  Perfect pairing:  Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE, Michigan, Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss.  If the Lions are being built in Dan Campbell’s image, the players Detroit selects on draft weekend must play with fanatical effort and exhibit the toughness that reflects a blue-collar town. Hutchinson has a high-revving motor that overwhelms opponents ill-equipped to deal with his effort, energy and skills as a pass-rusher.  Corral is an ultra-talented gunslinger with exceptional arm talent and a quick release. He is franchise-quarterback material with enough athleticism, toughness and playmaking ability to upgrade the Lions’ QB1 spot.) 2022 Detroit Lions Draft preview: GM Brad Holmes faces huge decision at quarterback (Day 1/Early Day 2 options: Liberty’s Malik Willis, Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, Ole Miss’ Matt Corral, North Carolina’s Sam Howell.  Moving into Pick 32/34 territory, Ridder, Corral, and Howell are potential options if Detroit believes spending early draft capital on this draft class of quarterbacks is too rich for their blood. Corral may not have the arm strength that some of these other passes have, but his accuracy is a little more consistent, and with above average athleticism, he’s not afraid to tuck the ball and run.) (4-18-22):  https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2022/4/18/23030009/2022-detroit-lions-draft-preview-quarterback-options

NFL comps for draft QBs: Corral next Jake Plummer? (Matt Corral
Mississippi (PRO COMPARISON: Jake Plummer, retired):  I have created a 20-season sample, which means that Plummer's first four seasons in the NFL weren't originally included. However, the match percentages popped, so I added Plummer's full career to this and BOOM(!): It's the highest fit for this QB class. PFF shows that Corral used play-action more than any other QB in 2021 (60.4 percent) and had the most yards on such passes (2,207), while being one of just two QBs to throw for more than 2,000 yards off play-action last season. Having the foundation of the offense in play-action allowed him to strategically use deep passes, and he was the second-most accurate on deep passes by FBS QBs with at least 75 attempts in the past two seasons (48.0 percent).  TEAM FIT: Tennessee Titans.  Corral is my second-most pro-ready QB prospect, but my models don't love him starting in Year 1. This player-team pairing doesn't throw shade Ryan Tannehill's way, but rather respects the system of leveraging Corral's skill set (play-action) the most. It also takes a swing at bringing in a potential QB for the future, before it's absolutely necessary down the line. Of the current QB-needy teams, Seattle creates the highest three-season win share.) (The first round picks whose stock dropped slightly (5) - draft position fall by between three and six total spots. Dotson lost ground to the rising tide of wideouts around him.  Ditto for Corral, only sub in “quarterbacks.” ) (4-14-22):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-mock-draft-stock-watch-players-rising-falling

Charles Davis: 13 draft prospects I'd pound table for (Matt Corral - Mississippi · QB:  Corral is my favorite quarterback in this year's draft. I love how he has progressed throughout his career, and it all came together for him in 2021, when he was the personification of skill, toughness and moxie. With an extremely quick release and the ability to make plays with his legs, I view his skill set as a great fit for today's NFL. As a former Tennessee Volunteer, I'll never forget what he did to UT last October in Neyland Stadium. Corral accounted for 426 total yards, including a career-high 195 rushing yards on 30(!) attempts, while playing through injury in leading Ole Miss to a 31-26 victory. Also, he showed at his pro day that he's fully recovered from the high ankle sprain he suffered against Baylor in the Sugar Bowl.) 2022 NFL Draft quarterback rankings: Will Kenny Pickett or Malik Willis be drafted first? (4.  Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  Corral sharpened his craft against a litany of five-star defensive prospects from Alabama, Texas A&M, and LSU. He took a massive leap forward in 2020 to stake his claim as one of college football’s most exciting quarterbacks. While he wasn’t able to up his numbers in 2021, he was able to prove he can harness his gunslinger energy and create fewer turnovers against hungry defenses.  The Ole Miss star snaps through his reads with haste and delivers quick strikes capable of neutralizing pass rushes. Corral played Mississippi’s RPO-heavy offense about as well as it could be played, exploiting gaps in the middle of the field and leaning on his slot wideouts to soften up defenses before making the most of opportunities downfield.  Corral may be the best prospect in the class when it comes to reading defenses and making adjustments. He’s also a talented runner who understands when to pull the ball down and go for it — especially in the red zone, as his 11 rushing touchdowns last season can attest.  But his deep passes weren’t always as picture perfect as some NFL teams may like, and that RPO-heavy offense leaves questions about how his skill would translate to a league that may be leaving that style behind. He doesn’t throw as well on the run as any of the three guys ahead of him — though he’s not bad at it — and doesn’t have the arm talent of a Pickett or Willis. Still, Corral is a great college player who showed continual growth at Ole Miss. He should be ready for whatever the next challenge is at the NFL level.) 2022 NFL Draft: Ranking the top five quarterback prospects (3. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (2021 stats: 3,349 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, five interceptions) -  Klatt's thoughts: "When you watch Matt Corral play, what you see is a really athletic player with a strong arm. I loved what he was able to do for Lane Kiffin, and it's the throws down the field that I think are the most impressive things that Corral does. I was heartbroken for him with how his season ended, but you know that he is a competitor. He's a very solid leader, and he's a guy that I think could have some success at the next level.") (4-5-22):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/joel-klatt-ranks-the-top-five-qb-prospects-in-the-2022-nfl-draft

2022 NFL Draft preview: 5 quarterbacks that could interest the Lions (4. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (6-2, 212.):  A three-year player and 2018 redshirt, he was the full-time starter in 2020-21. He threw for 3,337 yards with 29 TDs and 14 interceptions in 10 games in 2020 and came back in 2021 to throw for 3,347 yards, 20 TDs and five interceptions in 13 games.  One of the more mobile quarterbacks in this draft, he ran for 506 yards in 2020 and 614 in 2021.) 2022 NFL Draft: Risers and fallers according to PFF's Mock Draft Simulator (Fallers - QB MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS (PFF Big Board Rank: 44, Mock Draft Sim ADP: 37):  The ADP trend graph for Matt Corral is not dissimilar to that of most of the quarterback prospects in this year’s draft. It’s not a class people are in love with, and while some signal-callers may end up getting selected high in the first round, fans drafting for their team don’t like making those picks. Corral at one point was being selected regularly inside the top 10, but his stock is now out of the first round entirely.  Corral has tools, but he comes from an offense that ran RPOs on over 40% of its plays, four times the NFL average. Those plays simplified his reads and process, resulting in a standard operating procedure that just bears little resemblance to the one he’s going to need to master at the NFL level. It’s not that Corral has shown an inability to function within an NFL scheme, but the degree of unknown is a big thing to get past, particularly at the most important position in the game and with a premium draft pick.) 2022 NFL Draft: The top 11 quarterbacks (4
Matt Corral, Mississippi (Height: 6’2″ (25th)  Weight: 212 (21st)):  Bio: Matt Corral was graded as the sixth-highest pocket passer in the 2018 recruiting class according to ESPN.com, and he played in the 2018 Army All-American Bowl. Corral’s recruiting journey took a few turns, as he originally decided to stay close to home and play for the University of Southern California. Corral then switched to Florida, before finally settling on Mississippi.  After appearing in a handful of games as a freshman in 2018, Corral was named the team’s starting quarterback in 2019. Mississippi struggled and limped to a 4-8 record, and Lane Kiffin was hired to take over the coaching duties following that season.  Under Kiffin, Corral began to thrive. In the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, Corral threw for 3,337 yards and 29 touchdowns, with 14 interceptions. 11 of those turnovers, however, came in just two games as Corral threw six interceptions in a loss to Arkansas early in the year, and five interceptions in a loss to LSU late in the season.  This past season, Corral led Mississippi to a ten-win year, and it was his most efficient and productive season while on campus. Corral completed 67.7% of his passes for 3,343 yards and 20 touchdowns, against just five interceptions. He also added 614 yards on 152 carries, both of which were career-high marks as a runner. Corral decided to play in the Sugar Bowl against Baylor, but suffered an injury early in the game.  Stat to Know: As we will discussion, scheme fit and transition to the NFL are going to be questions. According to Pro Football Focus charting, Corral used play-action on over 60% of his dropback throws last season, the highest among passers in the FBS.  Strengths: Corral is an athletic quarterback with the mobility to not only extend plays in the pocket, but to be a true weapon with his legs. Mechanically, Corral shows a crisp, quick release with a compact throwing motion and a release point just by his ear, allowing him to snap off throws early in the down.  Kiffin’s offense did him many favors, but one of the things that it did for Corral was create opportunities for him to manipulate defenders. As such, Corral is one of the more efficient manipulators in this quarterback class, with an array of pump fakes, shoulder shrugs and eye manipulation at his disposal to get defenders out of position and to attack downfield.  Footwork in the pocket and working through reads is another area that stands out with Corral. You can see moments on tape where his eyes and his feet are right in sync with each other, as he works from his first read to his last on a given play. Take this example as Corral works full-field, right to left.  This is one of Mississippi’s staple plays, as they use orbit motion into a swing route on the right, setting up a high-low on that side of the field with a deeper curl route as the high. Corral opens to that concept, but seeing it covered then comes to the pair of in-breaking routes coming from the left, before getting to the checkdown in the left flat. As he works through his reads, his feet and mind are tied together perfectly, keeping him in position to put the throw on his running back as his fifth read.  Corral’s athleticism shows up on plays like this against Alabama.  Corral has the athletic ability and reaction skills to evade unexpected pressure in the pocket, and still get off throws like this under pressure.  Weaknesses: The biggest questions facing Corral center on his development and transition from Kiffin’s offense to what life will be like in the NFL. As outlined, the Mississippi offense relied heavily on both play-action and RPO concepts. There are some offenses in the NFL that will provide him a similar opportunity, but likely not to the same extent. Corral will need to make plays consistently from the pocket at the next level, or at least with more frequency than he was asked to do in college.  Corral also has the ability to attack the middle of the field, and to layer throws between the numbers, but this is not something he did a ton while playing on Saturdays.  There are also moments on film where you can see how Kiffin dialed up a vertical shot play and Corral insisted on taking that throw, passing up opportunities for an easier completion near the line of scrimmage. Sometimes you have to pass up the three and settle for the layup.  Conclusion: Corral is one of the tougher evaluations in this class, and his evaluation has shades of Justin Herbert’s. Like Herbert, most of what Corral was asked to do things in college are things that do not provide a clean and easy evaluation for life in the Sunday game. Corral’s offense relied heavily on RPO and play-action concepts, with lots of screens and concepts attacking along the boundaries.  The flashes of layered throws, progression reads and concepts attacking between the numbers are there, but there might not be enough exposures of those concepts and moments for teams to feel confident that those flashes will be repeated on a consistent basis in the NFL. Which is eerily similar to the Herbert evaluation. The moments were there, but you had to really look to find them, and even still, betting on small sample sizes — particularly early in the draft — is something teams do not always do.  Comparison: One of the more interesting comparisons I have come across this draft cycle is the comparison PFF had for Corral: Jim McMahon. It is hard to top that, but watching Corral and seeing how he was used at Mississippi — and how he might be used in the NFL, at least early — provides shades of Tua Tagovailoa.  Resources: For more on Corral, you can watch this deep dive into his game put together by myself and Matt Waldman.  There is also this dive into his game against Mississippi State, with a focus on the elements to his game that will translate to Sundays.) Best scheme fits for the top 5 quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft (MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS REBELS:  The proliferation of the Shanahan-McVay system helps Corral here. Ole Miss created a lot of defined reads for Corral — not necessarily half-field reads — that included crossing routes from condensed formations. The 2017-2020 Los Angeles Rams scheme would help him in the same way.  Creating deep crossing routes off play action where Corral knows where to go with the ball after the run fake would do him well. Considering the heavy-RPO system he operated in at Ole Miss, finding dropback concepts that work for him in the NFL is important. He threw the ball well when “4 Verts” style concepts were called, something he can hang his hat on. Finding different ways for him to throw in the seam while still basing out of RPOs and under-center play action is where you want to put him.) (4-4-22):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-best-scheme-fits-top-5-quarterbacks-2022-nfl-draft

Monson: Ranking the top six quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft (6. MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS:  Much of the analysis for Sam Howell also applies to Corral. He was excellent at what he was asked to do within Ole Miss’ offense, but that bears little resemblance to what he'll need to execute at the next level, and bridging that divide is difficult to evaluate without having him walk through plays and Xs and Os the way NFL teams can do with him.  Corral possesses good tools and solid accuracy. He has a quick release and is a good athlete. A slight frame isn’t a good reason to be concerned about a quarterback, generally, but when it’s paired with an injury history, it gets a little more worrying. Corral has been repeatedly referred to as having some “maturity issues” in various scouting reports. As much as that can be anything or nothing, it would be remiss to ignore it completely when already projecting so much.) (4-1-22):   https://www.pff.com/news/draft-top-quarterbacks-2022-nfl-draft-monson

2022 NFL Draft Board: Quarterbacks (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss--Experienced, intense but slightly undersized quarterback with a lot to like but some legit questions. Corral improved quite a bit as a senior in 2021, making better decisions with the ball and making them faster, too.  The upward trend elevates Corral to the top of the class. Maintaining the growth curve is imperative. He has above-average arm strength and showed a better grasp of how to deploy it, understanding when to unleash the fastball and when to take something off in 2021. The accuracy on short and intermediate routes is very good and consistent to either side of the field. The deeper accuracy is less consistent but did improve. He’s mobile and aggressive with his legs, capable of running away from trouble and moving the sticks. Ole Miss used him as a designed runner and on RPOs a lot, something that shouldn’t be relied upon nearly as much in the NFL. In that vein, he’s capable of throwing outside the pocket and extending plays but his decision-making and accuracy decline when he’s doing that. He’s got a consistent, clean and quick arm motion.  Corral does not lack self-confidence and will outwardly show it, something that isn’t for everyone. He’s coming off an ankle injury that has put a spotlight on his smallish stature and hyper-aggressive playing style, two hands that don’t often come together successfully for long. In prior seasons he struggled much more with making the right read and timely decisions with the ball. He still will hold the ball too long on deeper routes and trusts the arm strength a little too much for more conservative schemes.  Overall, Corral is exciting and maturing into a better prospect by the game. His leadership and proven ability to take coaching are quite appealing, as is his mobility and playmaking mentality. He’ll need to continue to make smarter decisions and avoid the dumb mistakes that plagued his earlier Rebels career. If he does, Corral can become a very good NFL starter. Top-15 talent but one with more risk than often desired with that high of a pick.) (3-31-22):  https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3449/2022-NFL-Draft-Board-Quarterbacks

Top 10 Quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft: Malik Willis paces the field ahead of Kenny Pickett and Sam Howell (4. Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  Though unable to showcase it during the offseason circuit, Matt Corral has all the tools. After his unfortunate injury in the 2022 Sugar Bowl, Corral answered questions about his health at the Ole Miss Pro Day. He also got to get in front of the media and all 32 NFL teams during Combine week.  Corral’s quick release and mechanics pale in comparison to the fact that he can unleash accurate passes from any platform. He said he models his game after Aaron Rodgers, and it shows. Corral has plenty of athleticism as well, as he can utilize his ability to scramble and maneuver the pocket to buy time while he keeps his vision downfield. He’s a throw-first quarterback with terrific dual-threat ability.  While he isn’t Lamar Jackson with the football in his hands, Corral has plenty of ability to shake unblocked defenders or a crashing pocket. He’ll only have to improve his capacity to throw with anticipation and to lead his receivers for yards after the catch, but that can be worked out in time. His understanding of a playbook and capability to command an offense will see him making waves in the NFL sooner as opposed to later.) (3-31-22):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/top-10-quarterbacks-in-the-2022-nfl-draft-kenny-pickett-matt-corral-continue-their-ascension/

5 perfect player-scheme fits; plus, QB pro day evals (QB Matt Corral:  The ultra-competitive gunslinger finally showcased his skills for scouts at the Ole Miss pro day on Wednesday. Corral moved around well and showed no ill effects from the high-ankle sprain injury that cut short his Sugar Bowl appearance and kept him from performing at the NFL Scouting Combine.  As a passer, Corral displays quick hands transitioning from fielding a snap to making a throw. His quick reactions remind me of a shortstop or second baseman turning two on a double play. Corral throws the ball with plenty of zip and velocity after a compact windup. Although he missed the mark on a handful of throws at his workout, I believe the redshirt junior has the capacity to develop into a high completion percentage passer (65% or better) with more attention to detail on his footwork and fundamentals.  On the move, Corral can make every throw in the book utilizing a variety of arm angles, which will enable him to work around defenders at the line of scrimmage. The combination of his middle-infielder hands, quick release and overall athleticism should serve him well when he ventures outside of the pocket on bootlegs and scrambles.  Overall, Corral is a blue-chip prospect with the arm talent and tools to succeed as a long-term starter. He will need to tighten up his game to maximize his potential, but the Ole Miss standout could light up an offense that features RPOs and an assortment of quick-rhythm throws that enable him to play fast and free from the pocket.) Lions 2022 NFL draft: A quarterback for every round (2nd round: Matt Corral, Ole Miss - Corral could very well come off the board in the first round, but that is not a consensus opinion. If the Lions are looking for an option at No. 32 (the final pick of the first) or 34, Corral offers athleticism, playmaking aggression and outward confidence that served him well in the Rebels offense. He does have some injury concerns and doesn’t always make the best decisions, which is why he could be available in the second round.) (3-25-22):  https://lionswire.usatoday.com/lists/lions-2022-nfl-draft-qb-prospect-for-each-round-willis-corral-howell-eleby-coan-scouting-reports/

2022 NFL Draft: Five takeaways from Ole Miss QB Matt Corral, Ohio State pro days (1. We finally got a chance to see Matt Corral throw, and he did not disappoint. Corral's workout showed off his compact, lightning-quick release, and he let it rip downfield a few times, dropping one over the shoulder of his receiver, then placing a back-corner fade on the right shoulder of his target in a red-zone session. He was accurate for the majority of his workout and his athleticism was evident in the twitchy bounce of his footwork. Corral's teammates didn't always help him out, dropping a few catchable passes and running the wrong route on one snap, but all in all, the workout was solid.  2. Most importantly, Corral looked healthy. There weren't any visible signs of limitations caused by the high ankle sprain he suffered in Ole Miss' Sugar Bowl appearance, which prevented him from working out at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month. Instead of being hampered by the injury, Corral looked comfortable and confident, delivering on-target passes and moving with ease. That should alleviate, if not eliminate, any concerns about his health entering the draft.) TWENTYMAN: 6 pro days to watch this week (Who to watch: Who will be the first quarterback off the board on draft night? Some think it will be Malik Willis or Kenny Pickett, while others think it might be Mississippi's Matt Corral, who has a lot of raw traits NFL teams like. Corral didn't throw or test at the Combine because of a nagging ankle injury. He's expected to do everything during this pro day.) Draft: Prospects with most to gain from pro day workout (Ole Miss Wednesday, March 23 - Biggest opportunities: QB Matt Corral:  Because of his bowl-game injury, Corral has been the biggest enigma in this quarterback class and has seen stocks rise for those around him, most namely Malik Willis. Simply being on the field, running, throwing, etc. will be a positive development for Corral. ) (3-11-22):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2022-nfl-draft-derek-stingley-jr-drake-london-and-more-prospects-with-most-to-gain-from-pro-day-workouts/

Ten QBs worth pursuing via free agency/draft/trade (8.  Matt Corral
Matt Corral:  Corral has good arm strength and didn't shy away from throwing into tight windows in Ole Miss' quarterback-friendly scheme. He can go through all of the progressions and makes good decisions. At 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds, Corral is a little undersized, but his play is reminiscent of a young Drew Brees. I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up the fact that he played in his school's bowl game this year -- something that's rare among college players who enter the draft. And while Corral suffered a minor lower-body injury in that game that prevented him from participating in on-field workouts during the NFL Scouting Combine, you have to admire the toughness, competitive drive and desire to win.) 2022 NFL Combine: Chris Olave, Malik Willis, Breece Hall top list of winners (Loser: Ole Miss QB Matt Corral - Corral suffered an injury at the Sugar Bowl that could be aggravated in workouts. But he is scheduled to perform at Ole Miss’ Pro Day.   That begs the question: Why not put on for the many scouts in attendance at the league’s annual company convention? Corral could've moved to QB1 with a good showing in Indy.) (3-8-22):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2022-nfl-combine-chris-olave-malik-willis-breece-hall-top-list-of-winners

NFL draft: Winners and losers from the 2022 NFL scouting combine (Losers - Ole Miss QB Matt Corral:  The ankle injury he suffered in the bowl game kept Corral off the field in Indy, and that's now two events (along with the Senior Bowl) where the higher-end QB talents have been able to add to their dossiers while he continues rehabbing. Corral said he felt "100 percent" healthy but opted not to throw or work out in Indianapolis.  "It does absolutely kill me," Corral said. "I'm itching to get back out there. About two and a half weeks ago, I started running and throwing with no pain. I just thought it would be smart to sit out. If I wanted to put my best foot forward, just wait until my pro day."  Now everything falls on that performance for Corral to make a first-round statement, beyond anything his game tape has shown. Did not working out at the combine kill him? Absolutely not. But he's been a bit of a forgotten man while other QBs have been able to put their best foot forward.) 2022 NFL combine winners and losers: Ridder, Dawgs rise (Losers - Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss:  The quarterback performances seem like so long ago now, but while Liberty's Malik Willis, North Carolina's Sam Howell, Ridder and others were showing off their arm strength, Corral was sidelined. He did nothing to hurt his stock, but if Howell and Ridder pass him in the rankings, that is going to cost him a lot of money.) 2022 NFL Scouting Combine: Malik Willis, Desmond Ridder, Sam Howell among quarterback winners and losers (Losers - Matt Corral, Ole Miss: For the second time in as many months, all of the perceived top quarterbacks, except Corral were side-by-side performing in drills. When the California native finally takes the field for talent evaluators, it will be just him at his Pro Day. There will be no apples to apples comparison to other top prospects. Overall, the quarterbacks exceeded my expectations so, will that impact Corral's stock?) QB takeaways from Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine (Matt Corral looking to check all the boxes
 -
For Mississippi quarterback Matt Corral, the Scouting Combine is a chance to prove to NFL teams that he is more than just a Lane Kiffin quarterback, but rather the complete package that can lead an NFL franchise into the future.  Corral, who suffered a high-ankle sprain in Mississippi’s bowl game, is not ready to participate in workouts in Indianapolis, but did tell the media on Wednesday morning that he is back to throwing “at 100%.” But he also had no regrets about playing in that final game, despite suffering the injury. “They asked me if I regretted it [playing in the Sugar Bowl]. Absolutely not. I wouldn’t have been in that position without [my teammates]…it was never a thought in my mind, I was going to play regardless.”  The quarterback also discussed his role as a leader for Mississippi, talking about a team tradition called “Get Real Wednesdays.” Only one coach was allowed in the room with the team during these sessions, and the players would deal with some bigger-picture themes. Corral prided himself on being the first player to speak up, trying to show the rest of the team that they could follow his lead. “They look at me like I’m the leader and when they see their leader do something, they’re going to follow.”  Of course, for NFL teams looking for a quarterback leadership is just part of the picture, and Corral certainly understands that fact. For many organizations, the adjustments from Kiffin’s offense to an NFL system is going to be one of the biggest question marks, but Corral is ready for that challenge, as well as some of the “drop eight” coverages that NFL defenses are adopting from the high school and college games to contend with high-powered passing attacks. “Understanding drop eight and what teams are trying to accomplish with drop eight…they just want to take away the big play…understanding where the ball is going on every concept” are the main points he highlighted when dealing with those kinds of defensive schemes.) 2022 NFL Pre-Combine Draft Scouting Notebook (Right now, the only QB who meets that middling threshold for 2022 is Kenny Pickett, and I have some concerns about his age and arm length/hand size. Matt Corral and Malik Willis--in that order--have the best potential to be better than Goff in 2023, either in Detroit or another NFL city. But it’s certainly not a given that any will ever surpass Goff, an average talent who can guide a strong supporting cast nicely but won’t ever elevate a team on his own.) 6 Quarterbacks for Lions to Watch at NFL Scouting Combine (Ole Miss' Matt Corral:  Don't sleep on the Lane Kiffin-trained QB.  The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder threw for 20 touchdowns and rushed for another 11 in his final season at Ole Miss. He also threw for 3,349 yards, and amassed 614 yards on the ground.  He possesses high-end mechanics, and has the ability to be a threat to opposing defenses while tucking and running the ball.   I'm sure Detroit's front-office brass will get the chance to meet with Corral in Indy.) (2-26-22):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/six-quarterbacks-for-lions-to-watch-at-scouting-combine

2022 NFL combine: Detroit Lions staring down crowded group at top of this year’s ho-hum quarterback class (Matt Corral (Ole Miss): You know what? With that said about Willis, these next three names fit the criteria of benefitting from a year sitting behind a veteran quarterback. Matt Corral is an intriguing prospect that cleaned up his game this past season despite missing some serious firepower. He threw 20 touchdowns to only five interceptions, adding 614 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Corral struggled under pressure but made a killing off short and screen passes to finish his career. There are concerns with size and his ability to read past the first or second option as things stand. He’s a legit athlete, though, and throws an impressive laser. There is reason to think this quarterback has one of the higher ceilings in this class.) Now with his turn in the spotlight, can he stand out and show the moxie he displayed this past season? If anyone is going to disrupt what looks like a two-man race (between Willis and Kenny Pickett) for the top-quarterback spot, it could be Corral.) Matt Corral, Mississippi, 6-2, 205:  The top underclassman in a mostly senior group of quarterbacks, Corral has all the physical traits NFL teams like at the position. He's got a strong arm and quick release, and he showed terrific accuracy the last two seasons. He improved his touchdown-to-interception ratio from 2-to-1 as a sophomore to 4-to-1 this past season. 2022 NFL Draft: Pros and cons for PFF's top five quarterbacks (3. MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS REBELS (PFF Big Board Rank: 32) - PROS:  Corral is an athlete who happens to play quarterback. His mobility is a big plus.  The former Ole Miss QB has a compact motion — he generates serious torque during his throwing motion.  He stands tall in the pocket and rips from a consistent base. He is accurate to all levels.  CONS:  He has a slim frame and is listed at 205 pounds. Plus, he dealt with multiple injuries in 2021.  There's not much throw shaping on his tape — lasers only.  Corral looks like a different quarterback and lacks confidence when he's forced past the first read.) 2022 NFL draft: Updated QB rankings, post-Senior Bowl (3. Matt Corral | Mississippi:  As an underclassman, Corral didn’t get the benefit of Senior Bowl week, but his impressive tape against SEC competition over the last two seasons is more than enough to keep him among the top passers in this class.  He can make every throw, and has enough athleticism to make plays when the pocket breaks down. An impressive pro day could easily make him the first quarterback off the board, depending on what a particular team wants in the position.) (2-6-22):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-draft-rankings-quarterback-updated-senior-bowl-2022-malik-willis-kenny-pickett-matt-corral/

NFL Draft: Introducing the top QB prospects (Matt Corral, Ole Miss - Strengths: Above-average arm talent and throws the ball with a lightning-quick release. Legitimate designed run-game athleticism. Plays with quarterback amnesia. If he makes a bad throw on one drive, he'll rip it through traffic on the next. Agile, fast, and he runs with tenacity. He's not Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen, but his legs will be an asset in the NFL.  Weaknesses: Ball placement is noticeably hit or miss. Won't flat-out miss many receivers but often doesn't hit them in stride. Deep passing left a little to be desired. Operated a predominant RPO offense that featured a litany of easy, schemed-open throws and didn't ask him to get to his second read often. Has a tendency to overextend plays that leads to him taking unnecessary hits.   Stylistic NFL comparison: Stronger-armed Jalen Hurts) (1-20-22):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2022-nfl-draft-qb-prospects-strengths-weaknesses-and-pro-comparisons-for-the-top-signal-callers/

Some team sources question Corral's arm strength and see some limitations for him in the NFL. In fact, some said they see Corral as a Case Keenum- or Taylor Heinicke-caliber quarterback. Corral is not a lock to be a first-round pick, and he could easily slide well into Day 2 during the 2022 NFL Draft.) (12-21-21):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2022stock_16.php

Malik Willis, Matt Corral and more: Who is the best QB in the 2022 NFL Draft rankings? (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (6-0, 220 pounds):  There's really not much separating Willis and Corral when you look at their playing styles as dual threats. Corral is a little shorter and thinner. He also is a great athletic and is willing to be aggressive with his arm, ideal for the downfield-throwing NFL trend. He has been helped a lot by the strong offensive mind of coach Lane Kiffin. Corral has a chance to displace Willims with a stellar contrasting performance. Both are top-10 picks.) Clustering the top 2022 NFL Draft quarterback prospects: Ole Miss' Matt Corral, Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett and more (MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS REBELS (PFF QB1, #16 OVERALL) (Scheme: Easy Buttons, Rushing Production: Rushing Threat, Passing Production: Accuracy Issues):  Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss offense heavily benefited Corral, giving him plenty of free production with a heavy dose of RPOs, screens and play action. This is similar to the offenses of other recent successful college football quarterbacks, including Baker Mayfield, Mac Jones and Trevor Lawrence in a macro sense.  Unfortunately, his accuracy numbers do not align well with this. At every distance bucket, he is within the bottom 20 CPOE marks in the sample. Part of this could be a function of his offense, as 52% of his passes came within five yards of the line of scrimmage, which depresses his sample size in the other buckets. Even so, his accuracy numbers are reason for concern and should probably be the central focus of his film study.  Less concerning are his ground game numbers, as he is grouped with the best rushers we’ve seen come out of college football in recent years. His athletic profile, not included in this study due to a lack of uniform combine numbers, appears to suggest he won’t reach Lamar Jackson or Justin Fields heights. But he still ought to be a viable rushing threat in the NFL.   Interestingly enough, his statistical profile closely resembles Justin Herbert, despite their vast physical differences.) (12-15-21):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-college-football-clustering-2022-nfl-draft-quarterback-prospects-ole-miss-matt-corral-pittsburgh-kenny-pickett

2022 NFL draft: 5 quarterbacks to watch for the Detroit Lions (Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss:  Get used to Matt Corral’s name if you haven’t already because the signal-caller is the clear favorite for many. PFF has him ranked inside its top 20 prospects, slotting him as the top-ranked quarterback. Corral shined against SEC defenses this year, and that’s not always the easiest task, to say the least. He threw only four interceptions, completing 67.1% of his passes while shining in the deep and intermediate areas. Corral struggled mightily under pressure, more than most on this list, so that’s something to watch through the draft process. He added 11 rushing touchdowns and 597 yards on the ground. He struggled some down the stretch but gets another chance to showcase his game against Baylor in the Sugar Bowl.) Top 10 Quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft: Kenny Pickett continues his ascension to the top (2. Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  The body of work is impressive for Matt Corral. Some may say it’s the system, but he evolved past Lane Kiffin’s at Ole Miss. Corral has some of the best off-platform throws in this class while possessing terrific mechanics on standard throws. He finds receivers at every level and moves defenders with his eyes just as easily.  Corral has even better athleticism than advertised as well. He’s a threat with the ball in his hands, but more importantly, he maintains his vision downfield when scrambling. He’ll look for an open receiver before just tucking and running. 2022 NFL Draft Big Board: Top 50 prospect rankings at the end of the season (31. Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss:  As reportedly recently by PFN’s Chief Draft Analyst Tony Pauline on the “Between the Hashes” podcast, multiple NFL teams don’t have a quarterback with a first-round grade in this class. In fact, the 2021 CFB season has provided less clarity and more confusion at the position.  Still, for us, Matt Corral possesses the most alluring skill set of any prospect right now. His arm talent is off the charts, as he can make throws into windows that most of his contemporaries cannot. The Ole Miss quarterback has impressive mobility, blurring the line between creativity and toughness. While he still has room for improvement, Corral has cleaned up some of his decision-making issues. As a result, he remains the QB1 on our 2022 NFL Draft Big Board.) (12-1-21):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2022-nfl-draft-big-board-top-50-prospects-w0/2/

2022 NFL draft: Ole Miss' Matt Corral might be QB1, but it's a drop from recent drafts (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (Last week: 2nd):  There's a good-to-very-good NFL prospect in there. But in what's becoming all too clear, even to still-casual draft fans, is that Corral would probably represent one of the weaker QB1s in recent memory. (The same would apply to Kenny Pickett, or any other QB in this class.)  It struck us late in the game against Vanderbilt when Corral threw a poorly timed red-zone interception when the Rebels had their foot on the neck of the Commodores. Now let's be clear: One throw does not an evaluation make. But it's the kind of play that gives us the willies with Corral as any kind of immediate contributor in 2022. He's had just enough of these types of throws to give us pause, even as we appreciate his tangible upside.  Corral is all in on the 2022 NFL draft, and he likely will go moderately high. In the right setting, with the right surrounding cast and time to develop behind the scenes, Corral could be a weapon. But like with Zach Wilson — whom Corral most resembles, we believe — expecting overnight success might be a dangerous proposition.  Our view: Corral simply can't be placed at the same level of prospect as the past four QB1s: Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray or Baker Mayfield.) 2022 NFL draft: Kenny Pickett-Sam Howell duel, Phil Jurkovec's return tilt QB rankings (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss
(Last week: 2nd):  Outside of a few risky throws against Texas A&M, Corral was very much in control in the big win over the Aggies and a talented defense. Week in and week out, he seems to face the toughest tests of any 2022 QB prospect and more often than not, he comes out looking effective.  We like that Corral seems to adjust his game depending on the opponent and the flow of the game, although we do wish he'd feature his legs as a scrambler more — perhaps not as much as he was forced to do earlier in the season against Tennessee but maybe more than we saw Saturday.  NFL teams have been digging into Corral's character even more now that he's emerging as one of the two or three best QB prospects in this somewhat underwhelming class. But his toughness and high-end skill are two alluring traits that should put him on the first-round radar.) Detroit Lions 2022 draft watch: Top QBs face-off on Thursday night (Last weekend’s highlighted game, Liberty at Mississippi, featured what most projected (at the time) to be the two leading candidates to be the first two quarterbacks selected in the 2022 NFL draft: Malik Willis (Liberty) and Matt Corral (Mississippi).  Unfortunately, Willis disappointed with his decision-making (his supporting cast did him no favors) and some of his biggest flaws were exaggerated.  Corral held steady, but even though Liberty’s defense couldn’t hold up against a more talented roster, he wasn’t able to dominate (he and all his skill players are dealing with injuries) and separate himself from the pack.  Corral is still likely the front runner to be the first quarterback off the board at this time, but he’s far from a lock to go first overall, and the door is wide open for another quarterback to leapfrog him if they can seize the opportunity.) 2022 NFL draft: Matt Corral outshines Malik Willis in QB showdown (2. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (Last week: 4th):  Corral very much has a chance to be the first QB drafted in 2022, but that speaks to the relatively disappointing talent at the position in this draft class as much as it does his ability. He led a very respectable effort against an overmatched Liberty defense on Saturday in front of a host of NFL scouts, led by the Denver Broncos, who sent a whopping five representatives to the game.  Corral's deep-ball touch, fearlessness, toughness and running ability certainly give the veneer of a top QB prospect. But there also appears to be a healthy amount of development required in his game, as Corral can still be too system-dependent and struggle when structure breaks down and he's forced to make decisions on the fly as a passer.  We're fans, we really are. But if Corral had come out with his current body of work in last year's draft class, he'd have been battling for QB6 honors with the likes of Kyle Trask, Kellen Mond and Davis Mills and perhaps not wedging his way into Round 1.) (11-8-21):  https://sports.yahoo.com/2022-nfl-draft-matt-corral-outshines-malik-willis-in-qb-showdown-182430797.html

$.10 After NFL Week 9 (Draftnik eyes descended upon Oxford for Ole Miss and Liberty, a rare meeting between the presumptive top two QB prospects in the upcoming draft. Matt Corral outshone Malik Willis in the Rebels’ 27-14 win. Corral certainly had more help around him, but also looked like the more NFL-ready starter. His accuracy in on-schedule throws was superior, as was Corral’s poise under fire. That’s not to say Willis played poorly or looked overwhelmed, but the constant pressure early in the game--he was sacked 7 times in the first four possessions--weighed on him. Teams looking for an immediate answer at QB should have nothing to do with Willis, who is far behind Trey Lance or Justin Fields on the developmental curve entering the league.) Fox sports Rob Rang's Big Board (20. Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss, 6-foot-2, 205, rJR:  The 2022 crop of quarterbacks pales in comparison to last year’s class, but that won’t stop a desperate team from considering Corral in the first round. The California native showed confidence in himself by traveling across the country to compete in the SEC. His success speaks for itself, with a 52:20 touchdown-to-interception ratio in his career. Corral has the arm and athleticism teams expect out of a top pick, as well as the gunslinger mentality needed to win over a team.) Detroit Lions 2022 draft watch: Top QB prospects go head-to-head this Saturday (Matt Corral, Quarterback, Mississippi (Redshirt Junior):  While Willis will have an opportunity to raise his draft stock, Corral’s opportunity for praise will be minimal. He will be expected to dice up Liberty’s defense, and he should do just that, especially knowing that there will be plenty of scout's eyes on him.  Stylistically, Corral has a lot of similar traits to Willis. He’s got an above-average NFL arm, has quick feet, and can keep plays alive with them. He operates out of a one-read offense and can be hesitant to make a throw before he sees it’s open. He will also work through some accuracy issues, but he is willing, capable, and shows the confidence to make deep shots all over the field.  There are also some differences between the pair. Corral doesn’t have the elite running option to his game but he is a capable runner. What really stands out though if how he uses his feet in the pocket. There is virtually no lag between him processing what he sees and getting his feet into position. His lower body movement is reminiscent of a shortstop in baseball, with quick resets to always put his body in the proper spot to make a throw with excellent technique. His footwork can help mask breakdowns in protection, as he slides away from pressure. And, because he is always keeping his eyes downfield, he is consistently in position to make a throw.  Additionally, Corral has a compact release when throwing the ball, which comes in handy at Ole Miss, as the scheme calls for rapid movement and quick throws. But don’t be mistaken, while the scheme pushes for quick decisions, Corral is also asked to throw downfield and keep defenses honest. Because he has such a strong arm and the confidence he can make any throw, you will occasionally see a gunslinger mentality in Corral where he will force a throw he believes he can make (think early Matthew Stafford years).  Corral is a mix of new and old age quarterback play. He does most of his damage from the pocket but has the athleticism to escape and gain positive yardage. He is very confident in his skill set and believes he is capable of making any throw on the field—which is true more often than not.) Malik Willis vs. Matt Corral: Who is the No. 1 QB in the 2022 NFL Draft rankings? (2. Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  There's really not much separating Willis and Corral (6-0, 220 pounds) when you look at their playing styles as dual threats. Both are top-10 picks.) Detroit Lions 2022 NFL draft watch: Meet two top QB prospects facing off at noon Saturday (Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  Corral has passed for 2,202 yards and rushed for 519, adding 25 total touchdowns (15 passing, 10 rushing), with showcase games against Louisville to open the season (381 yards, 68.8% completion percentage) and Tennessee in mid-October. (Before the golf balls and mustard bottles flew from the stands in Neyland Stadium, Corral passed for 231 yards and rushed for 195 on 30 carries.) The junior hasn’t been quite as accurate as he was last season, completing 66% of his passes in 2021, compared to 70.9% in 2020. But his interceptions are way down, with two in eight games (compared to 14 in 10 2020 games), and he has been a true threat on the ground, averaging 4.7 yards a carry. If Corral fails to impress this weekend, he’ll have another shot on Nov. 13 when the Rebels host No. 13 Texas A&M. (Ole Miss finishes up against Vanderbilt and Mississippi State, which should give a boost to Corral’s passing numbers) Of course, the question remains: How will Corral fare in the NFL without coach Lane Kiffin to scheme up the offense?) 2022 NFL draft: Can Nevada's Carson Strong end up as QB1? (4. Matt Corral, Ole Miss
(Last week: 2nd):  Corral has been on a slide recently, although it's hard to question his toughness or resilience after suffering an ankle injury on Saturday and returning to the game in the first half. He finished the game 21 of 37 passing (56.8%) for 289 yards and a pick in the loss to Auburn.  His 11-yard TD run came after the injury and helped cut into a 21-10 Tigers lead. Corral initially suffered the ankle injury two weeks ago against Tennessee and confirmed postgame that he had aggravated it on Saturday. It's not coincidence that his recent downtick has coincided with the injury.  Are we unfairly dropping him down? Perhaps. But there remain questions about how the splendidly talented Corral will adapt to an advanced offensive system in the NFL. His talent, toughness and playmaking potential, however, very much keep him in the first-round picture if he declares.) Stock Watch: Shaky Saturday (Stock Shaky: Matt Corral, Mississippi - It was not the best of nights for Mississippi and quarterback Matt Corral on the road against the Auburn Tigers.  The quarterback suffered an ankle injury that saw him taken to the locker room for a period of time, and while he returned, Mississippi would eventually lose to the Tigers 31-20 in a pivotal SEC West showdown.  Corral completed 21 of 37 passes for 289 yards and an interception, and while he added another 45 rushing yards on ten attempts, with a touchdown, the interception is likely the big story, aside from the status of his ankle.  With Mississippi trailing in the fourth quarter but in position to turn the contest into a one-score game, Corral forced a throw late across the middle. When you break a cardinal rule of quarterback play, you often get burned.  Mississippi will need to rebound quickly, as Malik Willis and Liberty come to town next weekend in a battle that could go a long way towards determining the state of play in the SEC West.  And perhaps at the top of the next QB class.) PFF’s Heisman Rankings ahead of College Football Week 9 (1. QB Matt Corral, Ole Miss Rebels:  Corral has been timely, accurate and a heady player in Lane Kiffin’s offense. He ranks 12th or higher among all FBS quarterbacks through Week 8 in negatively graded throw rate, accurate pass rate (66%) and turnover-worthy play rate (1.4%). Pair that with the kind of athleticism that adds value to the ground game, and he’s been shredding defenses. Corral is tied for fourth among Power Five quarterbacks in runs of 10-plus yards (20) and leads that group in total big-time throws on passes traveling 40 or more yards through the air.) 2022 NFL draft: Liberty's Malik Willis tries to crash top of QB power rankings (2. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (Last week: 1st):  This was perhaps the least impressive performance of Corral's 2021 season in Saturday's win over LSU. There was nothing egregiously bad about his play, mind you, but Corral didn't make a lot of high-leverage throws in the game, will lock in on his first read too much and still faces questions about facing pressure.  We're Corral fans, and he had been in the top spot for several weeks now. But there's a sense that his Day 1 readiness isn't terribly certain. When he's working out of structure, it's a dice roll on how it's going to end up. Corral has delivered some big plays but also thrown some breath-holding passes that give us the occasional willies.) Top 10 Quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft: Kenny Pickett, Matt Corral continue their ascension (2. Corral is the complete package and projects as an impact player in Year 1 for his future NFL team.) 2022 NFL Draft All-Prospect Team entering College Football Week 8 (QB: MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS:  Corral has taken his game to a different level this season, as his 91.0 overall grade currently ranks fifth in the country. So far, he’s completely eliminated the dud games we saw from him in his first year as a starter, as Corral’s lowest graded game still earned a 67.2 overall. His size will be a concern for teams at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, but he’s playing his way into first-round lock status.) 2022 NFL Draft: Evaluating the quarterback class at midseason (Matt Corral, Ole Miss, 6-2, 205, Redshirt Junior:  Midway through his third season as the Rebels’ starter, Corral has the experience against elite competition, arm talent and athleticism that scouts are looking for in a modern-day quarterback. He has thrown 14 touchdown passes and just one interception thus far this season and has completed more than 66% of his passes in his career.  Agile and aggressive on the move, Corral has also rushed for 1,174 yards and 15 scores for the Rebels, with 450 yards and eight TDs coming in just six games this season. He has the requisite arm strength and a lightning-quick delivery, peppering defenses in the short and intermediate range.  Following the success of sandlot stars such as Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray, the NFL is increasingly on the lookout for quarterbacks who can make the incredible play, even if it occasionally leads to mistakes. In terms of eye-popping plays, Corral is without peer in this class.  Like many of the QBs on this list, however, Corral is still raw in many of the finer points of the position. He is typically a one-read passer, too often staring down his primary target and resorting to scrambles when it is taken away. While capable of buying time with his feet, Corral often leaves the pocket prematurely, and his accuracy drops when he moves off-platform. He can take something off his throws and drop balls over the top with touch, but his accuracy lessens when doing so.  Corral is an exciting talent, but his game is boosted by coach Lane Kiffin’s creative designs and playcalling. Should he opt out early for the NFL draft, Corral is likely to earn consideration in the top 50 picks, though the team willing to invest a first-round pick to acquire him is rolling the dice.) (10-22-21):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2022-nfl-draft-evaluating-the-quarterback-class-at-midseason

2022 NFL Draft Rumors: Matt Corral and the latest on the QB1 battle (What’s the latest with Matt Corral? 2022 NFL draft: How high can Pitt's Kenny Pickett rise in QB power rankings? (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (Last week: 1st):  This was a fascinating game to watch on Saturday. Corral felt and looked at times like he was the best player on the field Saturday night at Tennessee. He was dominant as a scrambler and runner. Corral made some big-time throws in the face of adversity.   This was a dangerous college QB willing his team to victory, despite a leaky second-half defense, a slew of bad drops (PFF charted the Rebels with seven on his 40 attempts) and some burdensome pressure that forced him into four throwaways, numerous scrambles and four sacks.  But there's also the fair criticism of what happens when Corral plays outside of structure. Things tend not to go quite as well — especially when Corral is throwing and not running. It's just something we are going to have to address with him.  This game was a great snapshot of Corral's alluring traits and his clear shortcomings as a prospect.) 2022 NFL Draft QB Watch: Corral, Levis improving (Matt Corral, Ole Miss: Stock up -Corral is playing in a system that suits his skill set and he is operating at a high level. Corral is throwing with accuracy to all levels. His decision-making has improved and that is evident in his touchdown to interception ratio (14:1). The California native is making fast-paced reads and getting the ball out of his hands quickly.  Corral has strong command of the offense and his feel for the game is unquestionably good. His mobility is not comparable to a Lamar Jackson nor is the style reminiscent of bigger quarterbacks like Josh Allen, but it is enough to extend plays and get chunk yardage here and there. Corral is not asked to throw deep often but, when he does, he has done so with accuracy.) Stock Watch: Desmond Ridder, Brennan Armstrong make some noise (Stock Steady: Matt Corral, Mississippi - Aside from Kenny Pickett, perhaps no other college quarterback has helped his draft stock more so far this year than Matt Corral. The Mississippi passer did it all on Saturday night, both with his arm and his legs as he led his team to a road win over Tennessee.  Perhaps the best way to sum up his night was a touchdown drive late in the third quarter, with Mississippi clinging to a five-point lead. On the possession the quarterback had three carries for 40 yards, and completed all three of his passes for 29 yards, the third of which was this touchdown to Dontario Drummond:  His first touchdown pass of the night was a thing of beauty, as he used a pump fake to help free wide receiver Dannis Jackson for his first career touchdown. Now Corral did throw his first interception of the season, early in the fourth quarter on this play that gave the Volunteers life.  But when the game did finally come to an end — after a chaotic scene that saw Tennessee fans rain everything that they could down on the field to protest a spot on a fourth-down play — Corral finished the night having completed 21 of 38 passes for 231 yards, the two touchdowns and the interception. He also finished as Mississippi’s leading rusher, gaining 195 yards on 30 carries.  Keep your eyes on early November, when Mississippi hosts Liberty and another passer vying for that QB1 title. Speaking of Mr. Willis…) (10-17-21):  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/desmond-ridder-brennan-armstrong-kenny-pickett/

Who is QB1 in the 2022 NFL Draft? What happens to Spencer Rattler now? (Matt Corral shows off talent in win against Arkansas - If I told you last year that the steadiest 2022 QB1 contender in 2021 would be Matt Corral, you would have called me insane. Corral threw 14 interceptions in 2020 — 11 of which came in just two games. He was known for his volatility, but this year, the script has flipped. Corral has yet to throw an interception in five games. And that steadiness has lent him a great deal of respect in the QB1 conversation.  Not only has Corral toned down his volatility, but he’s also relied on his physical talent in his brightest moments. Against Arkansas, the dangerous passer connected on 14 of 21 attempts for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also churned out 94 yards and 2 more touchdowns on the ground, leading Ole Miss to a 1-point victory.  Corral’s skills were on full display against Arkansas. As a passer, he used his elastic arm to hit windows downfield and hit receivers with pace. He also showed a calm presence in the pocket and quickly went through his progressions. As a runner, he flashed a tantalizing physicality on top of his athleticism and elusiveness. Without him, Ole Miss doesn’t win this game.  Still, some questions linger about Corral. There’s a chance his volatility could return, and the Ole Miss scheme certainly props him up a bit. Nevertheless, it’s important to scout the quarterback and not the offense. Corral has shown within the Rebels’ offense that he has the talent and the traits — both physical and mental — to be QB1 in the 2022 NFL Draft.  NFL teams would do well to recognize that and insulate his traits the same way Ole Miss has done. Any franchise that chooses a QB should be prepared to make him comfortable and position him for success. College Football Week 7 Takeaways: Notable grades, advanced stats & more (Ole Miss Quarterback Matt Corral is seemingly the only passer in the trending-up category. He played well within the structure of Lane Kiffin’s offense and earned an elite 90.2 passing grade from a clean pocket on first review. Oh, and don’t forget what he did to the Vols on the ground, as he busted off nine runs of 10-plus yards on 23 attempts (14 designed, nine scrambles).  Corral holds a 92.0 PFF grade for the season and will likely be rising up draft boards.) 2022 NFL draft midseason winners and losers: 3 QBs moving up, 4 trending down (Ole Miss QB Matt Corral:  The loss to Bama was a bummer, but hardly a draft-stock killer. He fumbled once and didn't generate a lot of big plays early in the game. There’s little shame or stigma attached to that. Kyler Murray had a pretty uneven game vs. Bama in his final college outing and still went No. 1 overall.  Corral has been fantastic outside of the Alabama defeat. He has four straight quality SEC matchups coming up and also has a terrific showdown with Liberty’s Malik Willis on Nov. 4. In a year when there might not be a head-and-shoulders QB1, Corral has put himself in a position to be considered as the first passer drafted if he keeps rolling.) 2022 NFL Draft Rumors: How far does Spencer Rattler fall? (I get the reservations around the Ole Miss offense, but Matt Corral is clearly a high-level physical talent. Will his performance against Arkansas help boost his stock?  No, because that game has always been a high-scoring affair. And despite terrific prospects such as Jalen Catalon and John Ridgeway, the Arkansas defense is still in the bottom half of the SEC. Matt Corral was efficient against Alabama, but his numbers did not stand out.) (10-12-21):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-draft-rumors-2021-cfbwk-7/

2022 NFL draft: Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler sinks in QB power rankings after Texas benching (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss
(Last week: 1st):  Corral has sat in the top spot for a few weeks now. Ole Miss once more was highly aggressive in its gameplan against Arkansas, just as it was against Bama. This time it paid off in a victory. Corral was asked to take more deep shots in this game, and he connected on four big ones in a terrific outing.  One of those came with just over a minute remaining, with Corral hitting Braylon Sanders on a 68-yard TD that provided the winning margin for the Rebels in a 52-51 cornucopia of offense. Corral needed only 21 pass attempts to generate 287 pass yards and 15 rush attempts to log 94 yards and two scores.  Corral has been the most dangerous draft-eligible quarterback in the country more often than not this season. We don't yet know if he's a candidate to go first overall in the 2022 draft but he's certainly in the running for QB1 honors at this point.) Stock Watch: The Spencer Rattler edition (Stock Up: Matt Corral, Mississippi - Mississippi quarterback Matt Corral had a chance for a statement game last week in Tuscaloosa when he took on Nick Saban’s defense and the Alabama Crimson Tide. That outing did not go so well.  Perhaps his response a week later offered the kind of statement he needed.  In a wild game against Arkansas, Corral and Mississippi came out on top by a final score of 52-51. In the win Corral completed 14 of 21 passes for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also added another 94 yards and yet two more scores on the ground.  Perhaps his most impressive throw was this deep shot to Braylon Sanders.  What might tell the story of Corral’s rise to the top of the QB class so far is the juxtaposition between his outing Saturday, and his game against Arkansas a season ago. When these two teams met last year, Corral threw six interceptions in an 18-point loss. Then two months later he would throw five in a loss to LSU.  He has yet to throw an interception in 2021.) No quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft class is the clear-cut No. 1 overall pick (Matt Corral, Ole Miss (Redshirt Junior)
What’s to like: Natural Athleticism.  When watching Corral play the quarterback position, one can’t help but think he would have been a standout no matter what sport he chose. Corral creates incredible torque during his throwing motion, which enables him to send lasers to every level of the football field.  While many of the top quarterback prospects have stagnated this season, Corral has taken a significant step in his development. He’s completely eliminated bad decisions from his game — at least for now. He doesn’t have a single turnover-worthy play on the season.  Why we’re worried: Size.  While size obviously isn’t his only concern, at his listed 6-2, 205 pounds, Corral would be the lightest quarterback drafted in the first round since 1992. Only Kyler Murray and Johnny Manziel have been first-round selections in recent memory while weighing under 210. There’s simply not a strong track record for passers Corral’s size.  Verdict: Will Have Every Opportunity to Claim QB1.  Corral will play against more top defenses than any other quarterback prospect in the class. While the Alabama tape wasn’t anything special, it hardly qualified as worrisome, either. He simply had little chance to succeed with the kind of separation and pass protection he was working with. With Arkansas, LSU, Auburn, and Texas A&M’s defenses still on the schedule, Corral can send his draft stock soaring with a strong finish.) NFL Hot Press: Disappointing 2022 Quarterback Class (Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral is the consensus top quarterback prospect, but some teams have makeup and character concerns around Corral. Corral himself has stated he had maturity issues early in his college career, but says he has grown and is dedicated to football. Corral has the best shot of any quarterback of being a top-10 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he still has more to prove for that to be become a reality.) 2022 NFL draft: Spencer Rattler, Malik Willis neck and neck in QB prospect power rankings (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss
(Last week: 1st):  Alabama stopped Ole Miss on three fourth-down tries in the first half, and that was pretty much the game. The Rebels were hyper-aggressive coming into the game, and they were not about to change who they are against the best team in the country.  It hindered the ability of Corral and the offense to atone for a defense that was gashed by the run, putting Ole Miss in a 28-zip hole at halftime. Corral was not bad, but he didn't connect on many downfield shots and had his scrambling ability limited by Bama's loaded fronts. He finished 21-of-29 passing for 213 yards and a TD, plus only 3 net rush yards on 10 carries.  Corral also played without injured receiver Jonathan Mingo, who was second on the team in receptions, yards and TDs and first in yards per catch. But Corral can't blame his lost fumble on anyone else. It was a so-so outing overall, but one that likely won't damage his draft stock.) NFL draft prospects for the Lions to watch in college football Week 5 (Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss:  Corral is following the blueprint laid out by players like Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott in their final college seasons. All those passers entered that final year with obvious talents but also real questions about their abilities. And they all proved they checked the boxes they needed to improve.  That’s Corral in 2021 for Ole Miss. His decision-making, his processor speed, his consistency of accuracy and touch, it all looks significantly improved from 2020. But he hasn’t faced anything like the challenge he’s got on Saturday against No. 1 Alabama (3:30 p.m., CBS).  If Corral lights up the Tuscaloosa sky the way he has so far in 2021, it will be hard to deny the momentum of his draft ascension. He’s already my favorite QB in the draft and could prove eminently worthy of a top-five overall selection if his developmental arc continues its current progress.) Detroit Lions 2022 draft watch: 8 prospects to watch this Saturday (Mississippi (12) at Alabama (1) at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS - Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss (junior):  Corral is the belle of the ball in today’s tremendous slate of matchups. A potential top-five quarterback prospect entering the season, his game has remained steady as others have fallen off, and he has a chance to put his name at the top of the quarterbacks list today at Alabama.  A highly efficient passer (over 70 percent completion rate), who can also gain yardage with his legs, the biggest knock on Corral was his turnover rate. So far, through four games, he has yet to throw an interception. What led to the improved play? Check out this stellar in-depth breakdown of Corral’s “rapid development” from Jordan Reid of the Draft Network.) Who is Matt Corral? Meet Ole Miss star QB leading Lane Kiffin's offensive juggernaut (10-2-21):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/amp/ncaa-football/news/matt-corral-ole-miss-qb-lane-kiffin/id18tfezooco151r2zhyr7hro

2022 NFL draft: Three highly rated QBs face key matchups this weekend (Ole Miss QB Matt Corral:  The closest the Crimson Tide came to losing last season technically was in the SEC title game, a 52-46 victory over Florida. But ask Alabama players and coaches which quarterback scared them most last season, and it wouldn't be a surprise to hear Corral's name more than once. That's saying something considering the Tide faced four other quarterbacks drafted in 2021.  Corral was tremendous in last year's 63-48 loss to Bama, completing 21 of 28 passes for 365 yards and two scores, also rushing 13 times for 40 yards. It took special efforts from Mac Jones, Najee Harris, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle to outgun the Rebels in that game.  Saturday could be a make-or-break setting for our current top-ranked QB prospect. When we moved Corral up to the top spot in our QB power rankings, we received a little guff from some readers. It felt like a leap of faith at the time, but that's suddenly not such a wild concept — one that's being accepted more and more these days.  If Corral can light up Bama for a second straight year, the lid will be thrown completely off. We truly believe that.  Corral isn't without his flaws. He had five- and six-INT games in an inconsistent 2020 season, has sub-par size, often receives wide-open looks schemed up for him and has moments where his mechanics escape him (especially under duress).  But there's some serious juice to his game, able to spray the ball to all corners of the field with great arm talent, possessing ideal movement skills to evade pressure and scramble and a decisive, quick release to put the ball in play before defenses can get into their proper spots.  This test, against a loaded Bama defense, will be absolutely massive for Corral's draft grade.) 2022 NFL Draft: Examining Matt Corral's aggressive style ahead of massive game vs. Alabama (9-30-21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2022-nfl-draft-examining-matt-corrals-aggressive-style-ahead-of-massive-game-vs-alabama

Who is QB1 in the 2022 NFL Draft? Can we talk about Kenny Pickett? That never changes.) Week 5 college football prospects and matchups to watch (Ole Miss QB Matt Corral vs. Alabama defense:  Stop me if you think I’m being dramatic, but this is the matchup of the season — or at least one of them. Matt Corral is a burgeoning QB1 candidate who has an electric skill set. Alabama will be his biggest test, and if he passes, he could flip the QB pecking order on its head. He won’t have an easy time, however.) (9-28-21): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/college-football-matchups-prospects-to-watch-2021-cfbwk-5/

2022 NFL draft: Fresno State's Jake Haener inches up QB prospect power rankings (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss
(Last week: 1st) - Bye week. (The big test comes Saturday against Alabama.)) (9-27-21):  https://sports.yahoo.com/2022-nfl-draft-fresno-states-jake-haener-inches-up-qb-prospect-power-rankings-191237490.html

2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 3 (Up - Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss:  While Ole Miss has had an easy schedule, Corral has done what he is supposed to do and dominate. Last Saturday versus Tulane, Corral completed 23-of-31 passes for 335 yards and three touchdown passes. He also rumbled for 68 yards on the ground and notched four rushing touchdowns.  On the year, Corral has completed 69 percent of his passes for 997 yards, nine touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also has five rushing touchdowns. Corral has shown his dual-threat ability with a strong accurate arm and dangerous running ability. Spencer Rattler has been underwhelming, so it looks like Corral is taking over as the top quarterback prospect for the 2022 NFL Draft.) (9-21-21):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2022stock_03.php

2022 NFL draft: Quarterback prospect power rankings, Week 4 (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss
(Last week: 1st):  Corral threw 13 interceptions a year ago, but that doesn't tell the entire story about his ball security in 2020. Corral had three multiple-pick games, including a 6-INT disaster at Arkansas and a 4-INT meltdown against LSU. But a funny thing has happened since that LSU game: Corral, by my count, now has gone 150 straight passes without a pick.  The huge test comes next weekend against Alabama, but Corral was absolutely electric against the Tide a year ago, completing 21 of 28 passes for 365 yards and two TDs and running 13 more times for 40 yards. If Corral can duplicate that effort at Bryant-Denny Stadium next week, the QB1 chatter likely will catch on elsewhere. We don't mind going it alone until then.) College Football Week 3 Takeaways: Notable grades, advanced stats & more (OLE MISS QB MATT CORRAL SHOULD BE THE NEW FAVORITE FOR THE HEISMAN - Ole Miss continued on its offensive warpath after a long rain delay against Tulane Saturday night. In the end, they hung 61-points on the Green Wave, with seven of those touchdowns going next to Matt Corral’s name in the stat sheet (three passing, four rushing).  Corral's 86.3 PFF grade for the game matched that eye-popping production. Three of his four rushing touchdowns were an explosive run of 10-plus yards on a draw, zone read and scramble, while two of those three passing scores were deep passes. The Ole Miss offensive line gave up more pressure than they should have, but when they didn’t, Corral was almost perfect.  Corral is now one of three Power Five quarterbacks with a 90.0-plus PFF grade through Week 3 (UVA’s Brennan Armstrong and Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa are the other two).  The Ole Miss QB is tied with Bryce Young for the best odds to win the Heisman after Week 3, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. If we want to give the Heisman to the best player in college football and not just the quarterback of the best team, then Corral should be the comfortable favorite.) College Football Players of the Week: Matt Corral and Calvin Austin best of Week 3 (QB Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  Poor Tulane. They never saw it coming. A rain delay couldn’t hold back the Rebels’ offense, and neither could the Green Wave.  Matt Corral went off Saturday night, but the real conversation piece is that he put himself at the top of the Heisman list. In just three quarters, Corral threw for 335 yards with 3 touchdowns while rushing for 68 yards and 4 more scores.  He’s the first player in SEC history with 3 passing touchdowns and 4 rushing touchdowns in a single game. Lane Kiffin’s arrival in Oxford has done wonders for the Rebels, but no one’s transformed their game more than Corral. Now, he’s a Heisman frontrunner, and Ole Miss appears to be the biggest obstacle for Alabama in the SEC West.) (9-19-21):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/college-football-players-of-the-week-matt-corral-calvin-austin-cfbwk-3/

2022 NFL draft: Quarterback prospect power rankings, Week 3 (1. Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  Corral had five- and six-INT games last season. But he’s been on fire the first two games, taking care of the ball beautifully and flashing some big talent. If he keeps it up, Corral could be this year’s Zach Wilson.  We think he’s an absolute bargain over at BetMGM with odds of +4000 to be the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Even with work to do to solidify his standing with NFL scouts, Corral is worth the long-shot wager, we suspect. He has some electric ability, with a loose arm, a fearless approach and ample athletic traits to excite the NFL.) College Football Recap Week 2: Oregon and Iowa stake early claim for playoff place (Finally, Ole Miss passer Matt Corral equaled his college football QB contemporaries with 5 touchdown passes against Austin Peay. 2022 NFL Draft: Stingley's SEC's best; Bama, UGA loaded (Outside of the usual suspects, Matt Corral is one of the quarterbacks generating the most discussion. Top 15 Quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft: Carson Strong’s strong start (5. Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  Few quarterbacks throw with the level of anticipation and zip that Matt Corral throws with. He put it on display with an incredible out-breaking route dotted over a zone coverage defender ahead of a closing DB in a spot where only his receiver could make the play.  Corral trusts his arm, as he should, with the level of talent he has. He’s a dynamic athlete as well but clearly has taken a step up in his knowledge of the offense and arm mechanics. He’s a scary guy for defenses to face in 2021 and beyond.) (9-8-21):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/top-15-quarterbacks-in-the-2022-nfl-draft-carson-strongs-strong-start/

NFL Draft 2022 prospect watch: Matt Corral, Ohio State WRs rise; Sam Howell falls after Week 1 (NFL Draft risers - Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss:  The 2022 class of quarterbacks is making its case to match the strength of '21, to the point Corral was ranked No. 7 at the position with initial second-round intrigue in Sporting News' first big board of top prospects. Corral just missed cracking SN's newest mock draft, behind Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder.  That may change soon after Corral ripped through Louisville's defense on Monday night. Matching the theme of '22 QBs, Corral has great athleticism and a big arm. He is helping himself by being fearless using both.  Corral carried the Rebels and built some Heisman Trophy buzz in the process, too, with his spectacular passing (22-of-32, 381 yards, TD) and calculated running (12 rushes, 55 yards, TD). Corral had the spotlight to himself and challenged Ridder and others to come through in good tests ahead.  Ole Miss hasn't had a first-round QB since Eli Manning went No. 1 overall in 2004. Circle the Oct. 2 game at Alabama as Corral's Johnny Manziel-like opportunity vs. Nick Saban's defense.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 1 (Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss:  Recently in the Hot Press, multiple team sources told WalterFootblal.com that the only two quarterbacks who teams viewed as being potential high first-round picks were Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler and Ole Miss' Matt Corral. Team sources say called Rattler the preseason favorite to be the top quarterback, but they say that Corral had really impressed scouts and could rise to be a high first-rounder and/or jump Rattler depending on how they play this fall.  Rattler had a mixed start to the 2021 season, completing 30-of-39 passes for 304 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while also running for a score in a close win over Tulane. Corral was excellent in his season opener, leading Ole Miss to cruise over Louisville. He completed 22-of-32 passes for 381 yards and a touchdown against the Cardinals. On the ground, he ran for 55 yards and a touchdown.  Three other quarterbacks recveived some tepid praise. One area scout said Alabama A&M quarterback Aqeel Glass had intrigued some evaluators and is a sleeper to watch. Another scout said Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels and Liberty's Malik Willis were candidates who could rise for the 2022 NFL Draft.  NFL teams are always desperate for potential franchise quarterbacks, so they are hoping that some players emerge who are being overlooked right now. In August of 2019, there was no buzz about Joe Burrow being the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and similarly in August of 2018 there were no projections that Kyler Murray would be the first player taken in the 2019 NFL Draft. Hence, teams are hoping a few players break out this season to give them more options. At the moment, they believe it might be a draft class with only two good quarterback prospects, Rattler and Corral.) (9-8-21): https://walterfootball.com/draft2022stock_01.php

The PFF Preseason College Football All-SEC Team: Ole Miss QB Matt Corral earns first-tem nod (First-Team: Matt Corral, Ole Miss - Corral gets to orchestrate a favorable Lane Kiffin offense, but he led that offense to near perfection last season. His Week 7 performance against Arkansas was the only blip, as he racked up six interceptions and earned a 30.8 passing grade in that nightmare start. Despite that, Corral still earned a 90.5 PFF grade for the season — he was that good the rest of the year.  Corral piled up the fifth-most deep passing yards (1,265) in 2020. On throws of 10-plus yards downfield, the Ole Miss quarterback ranked fifth in percentage of accurate passes thrown. Even with that six-interception performance, he still managed to rank in the top 20 in the FBS when it came to negatively graded throw rate. He paired that with the 11th-best positively graded throw rate, making him one of six Power Five quarterbacks to rank in the top 20 in both categories.) NFL Hot Press: Matt Corral, Highest-Rated Quarterback (6-23-21): https://walterfootball.com/nflhotpress/article/Corral-Highest-Graded-QB-by-Some-Advance-Scouts

Early 2022 NFL Draft quarterback rankings and class overview (MATT CORRAL, OLE MISS (RS JUNIOR):  The Rebels' big-armed 2020 breakout quarterback is far more than just a product of Lane Kiffin’s offense. He’s a toolsy 6-foot-1, 205-pounder who put some lights-out performances on tape down the stretch last season. His outings against Vanderbilt and South Carolina formed about as dominant a two-game stretch as you’ll see, with him earning passing grades of 94.0 and 93.0, respectively. That wasn’t the guy we saw weekly, though, as his seven turnover-worthy plays against Arkansas and five against LSU were off-putting.) (6-16-21):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-college-football-2022-quarterback-rankings-class-overview

2022 NFL draft: 12 QB-prospect matchups we can't wait for this season (1. Malik Willis vs. Matt Corral:  Willis is this spring’s hottest draft name, in a similar way to where Trey Lance was a year ago. After a 13-attempt career at Auburn, Willis transferred to Liberty and lit it up in a terrific 2020 season for the Flames. He had a 20-6 TD-INT ratio, 8.5 yards per attempt and showed great rushing skill (941 yards, 14 TDs in 10 games).  Although Willis struggled in Liberty's one loss to North Carolina State, he was terrific in most of the other games. Just as likely to fire a 45-yard strike as he is to gut a defense with a read-option keeper, Willis is a true double threat. It’s hard to stop both, as Coastal Carolina found out in the Cure Bowl.  Willis and the Flames will roll into Oxford in early November for what could be a snapshot of two first-round QB picks. But both he and Corral have something to prove. Like Willis, Corral can put on a laser show with his arm and can dazzle as a runner, too. He also had a few poor games, including a six-INT clunker vs. Arkansas and a four-picker vs. LSU.  Both also have terrific talent and are the style of quarterback the NFL is now embracing. A generation ago, both would be implored to spend a few years in Canada honing their skills. In this era, their dual-threat skills will be highly sought — assuming both progress the way we think they can this season. This matchup could be a low-key banger by the time it rolls around.) The 25 most intriguing 2022 NFL draft prospects, including 10 QBs (Matt Corral, Ole Miss:  Lane Kiffin’s triggerman is perhaps the biggest wild card on this list. On the one hand, Corral took a huge jump in 2020, completing 71% of his passes, averaging nearly 9 yards per completion and gashing both Alabama and Florida. He is a big-play machine: 57 combined passes and runs for 20 or more yards and 11 completions for 50-plus yards.  On the flip side, he had 19 turnovers — including five- and six-INT games in losses to LSU and Arkansas, respectively — and has a slim, atypical build.) (5-6-21): https://sports.yahoo.com/the-25-most-intriguing-2022-nfl-draft-prospects-including-10-q-bs-163838005.html

Top quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft include Sam Howell, Malik Willis (8. Matt Corral, Mississippi:  Mississippi signal-caller Matt Corral is the ultimate wild card in this 2022 NFL Draft class. A former four-star recruit who was ranked as the fourth-best pro-style quarterback in the 2018 class, Corral suffered an uneven start to his career for the Rebels. He redshirted after four games in 2018 and then started four of 10 games in 2019. Although Corral led the team with 1,362 passing yards, he completed less than 60 percent of his passes.  Corral was reborn in 2020, however, with Lane Kiffin taking over as head coach for Ole Miss. Even though he started the season behind John Rhys Plumlee on the depth chart, Corral emerged as one of the most exciting quarterbacks in college football.  He threw for 3,337 yards, completing 70.9 percent of his passes while averaging 10.2 yards per play. Proving himself as a valuable dual-threat, Corral also rushed for 506 yards and 4 touchdowns.  One area that Corral will need to address if he is to be considered as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft class is turnovers. He had the highest amount of interceptions of any of the quarterbacks in these rankings last season. Furthermore, in his career, he has a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio.) (5-4-21):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2022-nfl-draft-top-quarterbacks-sam-howell-malik-willis/
