NFL Draft Comps: Prospect comparisons for Derek Stingley Jr., Chris Olave, and others (Chris Olave = Calvin Ridley - Some wondered what kind of success Calvin Ridley could have in the NFL after testing in an underwhelming fashion at the NFL Combine. He didn’t jump well, and his agility testing was poor.  But the thing is, we saw on tape that Ridley could route defenders up with the best of them. As a route runner, he was a true technician. Ridley also had a game that was played on the ground and based on separation and not elevating to make contested catches. It turns out, you can be a productive NFL player with that profile. And Chris Olave is the next player like that.  Olave wins with fantastic flexibility in and out of breaks and an innate understanding of how to attack a cornerback’s leverage. He’s the definition of a smooth operator. As long as an offensive coordinator keeps his chest clean, he’ll be a productive pro. Finding NFL player comparisons for the top 32 prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft (Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State (TSN: Rashod Bateman, Minnesota (2021), NFL: Terry McLaurin, Ohio State (2019), RAS: Steve Breaston, Michigan (2007)):  Despite reaching Columbus as a three-star recruit, Olave quickly established himself as one fo the best wide receivers Ohio State has had in recent years. He had three seasons with at least 45 receptions, 700 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. We liken his game to another route-running Big Ten wide receiver in Rashod Bateman. The Minnesota product ran the same 40 time (4.39) as the 6-foot, 187-pound Olave and nearly the same broad jump (123 for Bateman, 124 for Olave). 2022 NFL Draft wide receiver rankings: Another stacked class of pass catching talent (2.  Chris Olave, Ohio State - Olave and his teammate Wilson both have strong cases to be the first wideout selected. The more experienced Buckeye — though he’s only a hair older than his teammate — earns the advantage here thanks to precise route-running, excellent ball tracking, and the kind of elite speed that should make him a contributor from the moment he takes the field on Sundays.  Olave does everything well, from breaking off defenders to improvising in hopes of helping out a scrambling quarterback to understanding and exploiting the gaps created in the defense around him. He can be a deep threat, turn screens upfield, or be a pair of reliable hands over the middle. While his ceiling may not be as high as Wilson or Alabama’s Jameson Williams, his floor is as a stable WR2 for the next decade.  He can get vertical, but brings a ton of value to his out routes, where a combination of strong hands and great body control led to plenty of toe-tapping first downs at the sideline in Columbus. This versatility means he can fit just about anywhere and make a difference. While he doesn’t finish catches as well as London, he’s built in a similar “put it in his radius and he’ll finish the job” manner.  There are negatives. He’s not huge (6-foot-1, 190 pounds), isn’t a very good run blocker downfield, and isn’t a prolific runner after the catch. But few players in this draft can match his combination of NFL-ready skills. Olave might not have the breadth of Wilson’s skill set, but his fluidity of movement and slickness of route running makes him a really high-floor player. Everything he does to get open looks effortless, and that same ease of movement makes him sneaky good after the catch. Chris Olave, Ohio State (Height: 6’0″ (44th) Weight: 187 (20th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.39 seconds (86th), Vertical Jump: 32 inches (12th), Broad Jump: 10’4″ (69th)):  Bio: Despite putting up big numbers for Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California, Chris Olave was graded as a three-star recruit by both 247Sports and ESPN. Still, he entertained offers from a number of schools, including Tennessee and Oregon State, but chose Ohio State to play for Ryan Day and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline.  Olave contributed immediately as a freshman, both as a receiver and on special teams. He caught 12 catches for 197 yards and a three touchdowns as a freshman, and even blocked a punt in Ohio State’s huge 2018 win over Michigan. During the 2019 campaign, Olave caught 49 passes for 849 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per reception.  In the shortened 2020 campaign, Olave caught 50 passes for 729 yards and eight touchdowns, over just seven contests. Last season he continued his high level of production, catching 65 passes for 936 yards and 13 touchdowns, despite playing with another receiver in Garrett Wilson who is going to join him in the first round.  Stat to Know: Olave holds the Ohio State school record for career touchdown receptions with 35.  Strengths: The ability to run a “full route tree” is often overblown when it comes to evaluating wide receivers for the draft. After all, any good offensive coordinator is going to identify what a receiver does best and find ways to use him on such concepts.  Still, when you see a prospect come out with the ability to give you everything int the playbook on Day One, you take notice. Olave offers that. He is a silky-smooth route runner, who can slide into any offensive system and give his play-caller what he needs right out of the box. One of my favorite routes from him this past season highlights how he can use pace and creativity to set up defenders. Against Michigan, Olave aligns on the right side and runs a comeback route. After an initial stutter-step at the line, Olave bends to the outside and starts to sell the defender on the vertical route. Right before he snaps to the sideline on the comeback, Olave looks back for the football, selling the cornerback on the nine route even more. He then sinks his hips and breaks back towards the sideline, getting a ton of separation on his break.  On this route against Oregon, Olave uses pace to sell the defender on the vertical route, but then does a good job at getting into the cornerback’s blind spot, working back towards the football as he separates from the coverage.  His feel for routes, his ability to setup defenders and his suddenness with his breaks makes him a complete route runner and a dangerous weapon in the passing game.  Weaknesses: Olave has solid hands, but there are moments where he lets the football into his frame rather than attacking the football. He also does not have the catch radius of other options in this class, and there were moments on film where he missed opportunities to high point the football. Olave is experienced against press, but longer, more physical cornerbacks could give him trouble at the line when he moves to the Sunday game.  Conclusion: Olave’s ability to separate against coverage, to setup defenders on his route and provide his NFL play-caller with a full route tree on Day One makes him one of the best options in this class. He is a scheme-diverse receiver who can play both inside and outside, giving his NFL offense a ton of options in the passing game.  Comparison: Olave’s ability to run the complete tree reminds me of Amari Cooper when he was coming out of Alabama. Cooper has a bit more bulk to his frame, and did as a prospect, but that full scheme picture is a nice piece to have as a prospect.) 2022 NFL Draft: Five takeaways from Ole Miss QB Matt Corral, Ohio State pro days (4) Two former Ohio State receivers confirmed what we already knew: They're first-round talents. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson stood on their 40-yard-dash times from the NFL Scouting Combine (Olave: 4.39 seconds; Wilson: 4.38), declining to run it again in Columbus on Wednesday. NFL Pro Day News and Rumors: Ohio State WRs Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave impress NFL brass in attendance (Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson steal the show at Ohio State Pro Day:  Wide receiver Chris Olave had a brilliant workout. He looked sharp and sudden running routes but also very smooth. He caught the ball well and did an exceptional job tracking the pass in the air. Olave has been one of the top-rated receivers for this class since last summer.  Garrett Wilson also looked tremendous all day. As someone told me, there was a discernible difference between the two receivers. And while Olave was good, Wilson was on another level. His routes were super crisp yet smooth. He showed great body control and caught everything.  Few, if any, left the workout not believing Wilson is the top receiver in the draft.  Both receivers had extensive 1-on-1 meetings with the Jets, Bills, Patriots, and Saints over the past two days. 2022 NFL Draft: Ranking the top 17 WRs in this year’s class (Tier 2 - Chris Olave (Ohio State), 6-foot-0, 187 pounds:  Olave is an interesting case, where heading into last year, he was the clear go-to guy for Ohio State after leading the team in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 2020. He was overshadowed a bit by teammates Garrett Wilson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (projected first-rounder in 2023 NFL Draft) in 2021, but saw his production increase and led the team with 13 receiving touchdowns, nonetheless.  Despite not seeing as many targets as his teammates, Olave is still one of the top receiving prospects in this draft and might be the best separator of them all. However, Olave’s top-end speed is now in the 1% of the fastest men to play this game. If teams needed a reason to value him ahead of other wideouts, such as Alabama’s Jameson Williams, Olave has given them one. Ohio State (Best team fits: New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions.):  Olave entered the combine as the second of the two Ohio State receivers on the big board of NFL Network draft guru Daniel Jeremiah: Garrett Wilson was the No. 6 overall prospect, while Olave was down at No. 26. But that gap closed in Indy. In fact, Olave made a strong argument for a leap into the top 15 picks in April. The wideout began Thursday night by running a quick 4.39 40-yard dash, then put together a stellar series of field drills. Olave is video game smooth and as fast as his 40 indicates, chasing down a bomb thrown by Malik Willis in the go-route drill for the most impressive completion of the night between any two players. In between, he was consistently sharp, running crisp routes with ease and drawing plenty of cheers from the fans in attendance. He didn't test as well as Wilson in the vertical leap (36 inches versus 32) but was slightly better than Wilson in the broad jump, and his on-field performance was indisputably excellent. Olave (6-0, 183)  had 35 TD receptions on 175 catches in college, and he measured at 6-foot and 187 pounds. Winners and losers from Day 1 of scouting combine drills (Winner: Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State:  If you combine Olave’s official 4.39 40-yard dash with his on-field drills, and you then go back to look at his tape, it’s clear that he’s a first-round talent. Yes, he’s been eclipsed by former Buckeyes teammate Garrett Wilson in this process, and Wilson also had a fine combine, but Olave once again showed his smooth speed and quickness where it counts. Someone is going to get a Day 1 guy who knows how to get open against advanced coverages, and that plays just as well at the next level.) Tyquan Thornton's 4.28 40-yard dash headlines fastest receiver class ever at NFL Scouting Combine (The first group of receivers set the tone for Thursday night's workouts at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, with four separate players posting sub-4.4-second times in the 40-yard dash. Then the second group took the field and nearly blew the roof off Lucas Oil Stadium. Ohio State's Chris Olave led off with an unofficial time of 4.26. But Olave is a route-running freak who could get open in his sleep. There isn’t a player in college football with more deep catches over the last three years than that guy. And considering all the talent around him in Columbus, that’s saying something. 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 12 (Up - Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State:  Olave has had a prolific career for the Buckeyes, and he made history versus Michigan State over the weekend. Olave got open to move the chains on a curl route during the first drive, and he closed out the drive by getting open for a 23-yard touchdown. That score tied Olave with David Boston for the most touchdown catches in Ohio State history. It was an impressive route, as Olave got open running a deep slant past two defenders to make a leaping grab in the end zone.  Olave made the record all later in the first quarter after streaking down the field to get open and running into the end zone for a 43-yard touchdown. Later in the second quarter, Olave made a superb adjustment with a phenomenal leaning catch to keep his feet in bounds for a highlight-reel reception of about 30 yards to the one-yard line. Olave caught seven passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns against the Spartans.  For the NFL, Olave looks like a future starter who could be a low-end No. 1 receiver, but might be a fantastic No. 2 receiver. Yes, I’m sure you’re surprised. Since the 2019 campaign that saw him log 48 catches for 840 yards and 12 scores, Olave has been highly regarded among the nation’s pass catchers. Nothing’s changed in 2021.  While Olave hasn’t dominated his team’s target share, he’s done nothing but produce when the ball comes his way. Currently, he has 23 catches for 374 yards and 5 scores.  There wasn’t much room for growth for Olave heading into the year. The Ohio State WR was already a fairly complete prospect. But on top of his trademark speed and explosiveness in open space, Olave has shown he can rise for passes in tight situations and use body control to convert. Top wide receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft include Garrett Wilson, David Bell (2) Chris Olave, Ohio State:  It’s extremely close between the top three wide receivers, and especially between Wilson and Chris Olave. Both were productive catching passes from Justin Fields last season, and both have skill sets that translate incredibly well to the NFL. Wilson has the physical potential to be a better separator than Olave, and he has greater contested-catch ability. But right now, if the draft happened tomorrow morning, Olave might have the higher NFL floor.  Prospect evaluation takes both floor and ceiling into account, which is why Wilson is higher here. Nevertheless, Olave will be an incredibly safe pick wherever he goes in the 2022 NFL Draft. Early 2022 NFL Draft wide receiver rankings and class overview (2. CHRIS OLAVE, OHIO STATE (SENIOR):  Olave has a skill set that reminds me a lot of Calvin Ridley coming out of Alabama. He may not be the biggest or fastest, but his ability to separate at the deep and intermediate levels of the field is nothing short of elite.  Olave is not going to be your screen guy (only eight broken tackles on 111 career catches), and he’s not going to routinely Moss guys at the catch point (eight contested catches on 19 opportunities in his career). But you can rely on him to be open.  He would have been in a similar draft range to Ridley had he gone out last year, but he returned to try to be WR1 in 2022.) 2022 NFL Draft Big Board: Early top 50 prospect rankings (9. Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State:  After serving as one of Justin Fields’ top targets in 2020, it’s no surprise that Chris Olave comes back as the highest-rated receiver on our consensus 2022 NFL Draft Big Board. Olave is a well-rounded receiver with few holes in his game, making him one of the best receivers in the 2022 class. He’s well-sized at 6-foot-1, 188 pounds, and he offers the smooth athleticism, route-running ability, and body control to be a threat down the field.  Best deep threat: CHRIS OLAVE, OHIO STATE - Olave is a master at altering his route pacing to stride away from corners down the football field. It also helps that he supposedly has sub-4.4 speed.  Olave recorded eight deep receptions in only seven games last season. He’s obviously much more than just a deep threat, but no other returning player in college football is better at getting open downfield. Small-schoolers like South Alabama’s Jalen Tolbert, SMU’s Reggie Roberson and Nevada’s Romeo Doubs deserve a shoutout, as all have legit juice to take the top off opposing defenses too.  Best hands: CHRIS OLAVE, OHIO STATE - With four career drops on 115 catchable targets, Olave is hard to unseat for this superlative.
