2022 NFL Draft wide receiver rankings: Another stacked class of pass catching talent (4.  Treylon Burks, Arkansas:  In a draft filled with fighter jets, Burks is more of a bomber. Arkansas’ flying fortress only ran a 4.5-second 40 at the Combine, but he’s a 6-foot-2, 225-pound machine who plays faster than he looks and glides in and out of his breaks like a slot receiver. Granted, the clip below came against Georgia Southern but …  There are going to be plenty of comparisons to AJ Brown wherever Burks is selected on Day 1. I see a little more Davante Adams in him, however. Adams is a little smaller than Burks (6’1, 215), but the two were similarly dinged by relatively slow times at the Combine. Despite that, both were super productive in college thanks to their ability to create separation, snag the ball at the first possible nanosecond it hits their orbit, and then turn on the jets to tack on extra yardage at the end of the play.  He’s useful as a big body capable of boxing out defenders and picking up vital gains on slants and drag routes on third down. He’s viable as a go-route flyer when given leverage near the sideline.  He lined up wide, in the slot, and in the backfield for the Razorbacks. His routes lack the precision of a guy like Olave, but his ability to understand when his primary defender is off balance or over-committed in the slightest is a reliable buttress in his cathedral of tricks. Give him an inch, and suddenly you’re stuck trying to hang on to a loosed bull.  Burks won’t have the same size advantage in the NFL, which leaves questions about his ability to play through contact and get to contested balls on Sundays. He was a true playmaker on tape at Arkansas but had a very unusual deployment, as the Razorbacks tried to get the ball in his hands as often as possible — to great effect. As a result, he is very raw and unrefined as a route-runner, and there are real concerns about his ability to maintain his playing weight and workout measurables that weren’t as spectacular as many expected. Burks averaged over 9.0 yards after the catch last season and almost 3.6 yards per route run. He is a big play waiting to happen, but the team that drafts him needs to have a very defined plan to use him and develop him to realize his potential.) Treylon Burks, Arkansas (Height: 6’2″ (71st) Weight: 225 (95th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.55 seconds (28th), Vertical Jump: 33 inches (19th), Broad Jump: 10’2″ (54th), 3-Cone Drill: 7.28 seconds (8th)):  Bio: A three-sport athlete in high school, Treylon Burks was the top football recruit in the state of Arkansas, coming out of Warren High School in Warren. He caught 151 passes for 3,403 yards and 43 touchdowns, and that was despite missing the bulk of his senior year due to an ACL tear.  Burks stayed in-state, choosing to play college football for Arkansas despite having a number of offers from schools like LSU, Clemson and Florida State. Burks stepped right into the Razorbacks’ offense, catching 29 passes for 475 yards. He was named a member of the SEC All-Freshman team after the 2019 season. In 2020, he caught 51 passes for 820 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore, and was named a Second-Team All-SEC player.  As a junior this past season, Burks caught 66 passes for 1,104 yards and 11 touchdowns, and added another 112 rushing yards for an additional score. He was named a First-Team All-SEC selection for his work.  Stat to Know: According to Pro Football Focus charting data, Burks averaged 9.3 yard after the catch per reception, fourth-best among college receivers last year.  Strengths: Burks is a big, physical receiver with the body to play on the outside at the next level. He is also an extremely confident receiver, who believes he is open on every snap even when it looks like the coverage is in position to take care of him.  More often than not, he is right. Take this play against Mississippi.  As this play begins, the corner over Burks gives him nearly ten yards of cushion. But as Burks closes that gap, he throws his arm up, asking for the football, while the corner still has about five yards to work with.  Burks comes down with the football.  After his 40-yard dash in Indianapolis came in at 4.55, some questions were raised about his long speed. Burks might be the latest example of the different between track speed, and game speed. When you see a receiver accelerate away from the entire Alabama secondary as Burks did in their meeting this year, you take the concerns over straight-line track speed with a grain of salt.  Then you remember he is doing this at 225 pounds — 95th percentile for wide receivers — and relax a little bit.  Weaknesses: Other receivers in this class, such as Chris Olave, are giving an NFL team the full route tree on Day One. Burks is a different story. Arkansas gave him a core staple of routes, and while he ran those well, teams looking for a receiver who can step into an NFL offense and master the entire tree are going to need to be patient. A smart offense will give him a similar package at the start, and let him round out the rest of his game over time.  His role is also something interesting to think about. His size profile screams “X receiver,” but the Razorbacks used him primarily out of the slot. According to charting data from PFF, Burks was in the slot over 75% of the time. As such, he was able to take advantage of some two-way gos, and did not see a ton of press-aligned defenders across from him. And, as we saw above, sometimes when he aligned outside he was seeing a lot of cushion. So asking him to step into an NFL offense, align at X and beat press-aligned NFL cornerbacks might be a big ask. So he might start out as a big slot at the next level, while he rounds out his game.  Conclusion: Every once in a while the retired lawyer in me creeps out. If I were Burks’ attorney, tasked with making the case for him, I would simply play those two above clips as my closing argument. In my mind, they speak for themselves. He is a ball-winner on the outside with the confidence needed to play receiver at a high level, and with the football in his hands he can accelerate from SEC secondaries in a flash. NFL Draft Rumors: Will Tyler Linderbaum and Treylon Burks fall out of Round 1? (Burks as a prospect:  Even before these NFL Draft rumors, Arkansas wide receiver Burks was a somewhat polarizing prospect. Beloved by fantasy football analysts, scouts have been more tempered in their exclamations about the big-bodied pass catcher. However, he still is a top-five wide receiver on the Pro Football Network Top 300 Big Board.  Burks’ appeal comes from a versatile skill set that was utilized in multiple ways at the college level. At 6’3″ and 225 pounds, he’s been used as a looming pass catcher on the boundary. However, his athleticism relative to his size has also allowed him to be used out of the backfield for Arkansas. Furthermore, Burks has demonstrated the ability to add yardage after the catch.  Calling those “highlight plays,” Pauline expands on why Burks could potentially fall down draft boards. “When you watch his game, he’s very rough around the edges. Poor route runner, very undisciplined with his routes. Not very fast. Goes to the Combine and can’t break a 4.5, and doesn’t look sharp running routes. He’s a very unpolished receiver. “And the fact is, we’ve seen it time and time again. These bigger-bodied receivers who went up for the contested throws every Saturday tend to fall in the draft. Because you have to be able to separate at the next level, separate through your route running and separate through your speed. 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Post-Combine III (Down - Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas:  Burks had an excellent 2021 season for the Razorbacks, but questions about his speed to translate to the NFL were present all year. The speed concern has only been aggravated in the pre-draft process because Burks has run poor times in the 40 dash - just below 4.6 seconds. That is a slower time for a wide receiver. As a result, multiple league sources think Burks could slide in the 2022 NFL Draft. They feel he has a shot at going late in Round 1 and won't slip out of the second round. When asked about who he models his game after, Treylon Burks presented one name: Deebo Samuel. Considering the fact that Burks has two inches and 10 pounds on Samuel, it might seem like a surprising answer, but not when you watch what he can do after the catch.  Burks is a “do-it-all” receiver that wins at all levels of the field, whether he’s turning a screen pass into a big gain, catching the ball in traffic over the middle, or using his elite vertical separation to catch the deep ball.  some were turned off from burks’ scores at the combine, but i think the expectations for him were unreal, to begin with. his speed and explosion numbers are very similar to ceedee lamb’s from a couple years ago and when i see burks taking it to the house against the entire alabama defense, then the speed concerns go out the window for me.  Like the others, I don’t expect Burks to be available for the Lions at the end of the first round, but with so many top-tier talents going in the same range, something has to give and maybe they get lucky with someone falling. Arkansas Pro Day 2022: Date, prospects, rumors, and more (The Razorbacks are absolutely headlined by their star receiver. As indicated by his attention-grabbing headlines from the Combine, Treylon Burks will be the talk of the town. However, don’t expect Burks to do too much at the Arkansas Pro Day. He put forth a complete workout at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine just days prior to Arkansas’ Pro Day.  Still, Burks could look to improve on specific figures he posted at the Combine. Specifically, the friendly confines of his home stadium could provide a moderate improvement on his 40-yard dash time. Burks clocked an official 4.55 40-yard dash, but many thought he’d do better.  Treylon Burks, WR - Burks may not run a full gauntlet of drills at the Arkansas Pro Day, but there’s one drill that we’ll surely be watching: his 40-yard dash (if he does it). His tape already shows he’s an excellent player, but it would go a long way if he can improve his timed speed from the Combine to his pro day.  Burks is a terrific contested-catch receiver who has a growing route tree. Short-area quickness may not be his strong suit, but he certainly has the ability to out-leap any defensive back.) As several on hand told me, Burks looked incredibly smooth and caught the ball exceptionally well.  This will surely make up for some of his disappointing results from the Combine last week, though some teams are still not thrilled with his 40-yard dash time of 4.50. However, he scored well according to our WAR projection due to a fast 10-yard split, which was equivalent to what is expected from someone running a mid-4.4 40-yard dash, and measuring in with large hands and arm length.) NFL Combine winners and losers: Malik Willis, Jordan Davis impress ahead of 2022 NFL Draft (Loser: Treylon Burks - Burks (6-2, 225) left Arkansas after a breakout junior season, and he remains in the running to be the first receiver drafted. He ran a 4.55 in the 40 and had a 33-inch vertical jump. Those numbers aren't bad, but it might be enough to give some teams pause given the draft comps.   Is Burks the next A.J. Brown, who ran a 4.49 with a 36.5-inch vertical? Or the next N'Keal Harry who ran a 4.53 with a 38.5-inch vertical? Winners and workers from the 2022 NFL scouting combine (Worker: Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas - The first prospect who leaves Indianapolis with some work left to do is wide receiver Treylon Burks.  The Arkansas prospect, a member of a deep receiver class, posted these numbers at the Combine.  The only area where Burks stands out is in his size, as he weighed in at 225. But as the wise Emory Hunt likes to say.  Burks’ numbers were good, but not great. Given what other receivers did in Indianapolis, people will go back to his tape and revisit how he wins. Burks has his moments where he runs away from defenders and looks to have “game speed,” and seeing him run away from the Alabama secondary might have some rethinking his 40-yard dash time.  After all, Cooper Kupp posted a poor 40, but the Los Angeles Rams looked at tracking data from the Senior Bowl and found that he was one of the fastest players in Mobile.  Still, Burks could stand to benefit with some improved times at the Arkansas Pro Day, set for March 9th.) Winners and losers from Day 1 of scouting combine drills (Loser: Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas:  Burks didn’t “lose” in the sense that he took NFL teams out of the idea that he’s a first-round pick, and perhaps the best receiver in this class (depending on what schemes you’re running), but you kind of expected more from a guy who shows up with his kind of athleticism at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound athlete is a superb athlete that has done a ton of damage on 50-50 balls and after the catch. Burks is one of the top-rated receivers per Pro Football Focus, with some of the best grades against man coverage and up there with the most yards per route. His 9.3 yards after the catch per reception ranks ninth nationally, with his 15 forced missed tackles cracking the top 30. The junior declared for the draft earlier this month, so he’s officially on the board. Burks caught 67 balls for 1,123 yards and 11 touchdowns, adding 112 rushing yards and one touchdown on 14 attempts. Most impressively, he managed to improve upon his impressive nine-game run from the 2020 season that saw him catch 51 passes for 820 yards and seven scores. It’s also obligatory to share his stats from this year’s game against Alabama, in which he went off for eight receptions, 179 yards and two touchdowns. 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 12 (Up - Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas: Burks put together a huge performance that will help him to end up as a first-rounder next April in the 2022 NFL Draft. In the first quarter, Burks got open on a crossing route and powered his way through a tackler to fall for first-down yardage. In the second quarter, Burks outplayed Alabama's Josh Jobe for a 50-50 pass to make a contested catch on a back-shoulder throw to gain about 32 yards. Burks demonstrated his toughness on the catch, battling through a painful chest injury he's been dealing with. Burks finished the drive by running an out route from the slot and catching a short pass. He then stiff-armed a tackler away and coasted into the end zone for the 15-yard touchdown.  Burks made a tremendous play in the third quarter. While sprinting along the sideline against Jobe, Burks slammed on his brakes, relying on Jobe's momentum to keep him running leave Burks open on the stop route. After catching the back-shoulder pass, Burks slashed across the field and took off on a run of about 50 yards. Alabama safety Jordan Battle over-ran the reception, and the Crimson Tide defense couldn't catch Burks, who scored from 67 yards out. That was a huge play for Burks' draft stock. The reason? Speed. Burks is a big, tough receiver, but the questions with that type of receiver is if they are sufficiently fast for the NFL, and Burks long score illustrated that he has pro speed. 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 4 (Draft Stock Up - Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas:  Before leaving the game with an injury, Burks was dominating the Texas A&M secondary, including cornerback Myles Jones. Midway through the first quarter, Burks ran a go route down the sideline. He and Jones had some hand fighting, and Burks managed a late push for some separation to haul in a pass before racing away from Jones for an 85-yard touchdown. Later in the first half, Burks made a diving catch deep downfield, and it looked like it was another long gain, but Burks was questionably ruled out of bounds.  Burks made a phenomenal leaping one-handed catch a short time later for a chunk gain. He also drew a critical pass interference. Midway through the second half, Burks was shaken up and had to go to the locker room. That ended his game with six receptions for 167 yards and a touchdown.  Burks showed solid route-running, hands, and physicality with cornerbacks throughout the day. While Burks is not a burner like a Jaylen Waddle, DeSean Jackson or Will Fuller, he is a big wideout who has enough speed to generate some late separation. He is dangerous after the catch and has the size and the strength to out-position defensive backs. His 40 before the 2022 NFL Draft will be important, but Burks could be an A.J. Top wide receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft include Garrett Wilson, David Bell (3) Treylon Burks, Arkansas:  Ohio State monopolized the top of this list, but if anyone can end their reign by the end of the season, it’s Arkansas wide receiver Treylon Burks. Burks may not benefit from the same quarterback play as Wilson and Olave, but even without top-end play under center, he makes plays. In fact, the most inaccurate passes sometimes make Burks look the best.  Burks has the elite playmaking ability that you’d expect from a 6’3″, 225-pound wide receiver. Draft: Comprehensive WR class primer (Treylon Burks, Arkansas (Reminds me of: Kenny Britt.  Feels like: Late Round 1 - Early Round 2 talent.  Trump cards: Size, box-out mastery, above-the-rim play, deceptive YAC.  Needs to show better: Routes, wins on the outside):  Stylistically, Burks is a replica of Britt on the field. Their build, the way they run, how they catch, how they jump. It's freaky. Burks is a sneaky athlete for being a towering target, and he plays to every single inch of his frame, meaning he's intimidating when the quarterback just throws it up and says "go get it." It doesn't really matter to me, but some teams won't love Burks predominantly aligning in the slot. If he proves he can win against press and maintain his productivity on the outside in 2021, he'll get picked high. Burks is a chiseled specimen.) And when you do, they most certainly don’t move the way Burks does. At 6-foot-3, 232 pounds, the Arkansas pass-catcher has legitimate angle-changing speed in the open field.  Sadly, we didn’t get to see that speed get featured a ton down the field this past season in Arkansas’ offense, given his 10.1-yard average depth of target.
