Terrific route runner who is smooth releasing off the line of scrimmage and quick in his all-around game. Intelligent and plays with balance as well as body control. Uses the sidelines well, displays outstanding focus as well as concentration, and finds ways to separate from opponents.   Extends and exposes himself to the big hit, shows terrific concentration, and pulls the fastball from the air. Displays quick, strong hands. Easily adjusts to errant throws and gets down to scoop up low passes. Comes back to the ball out of breaks, quickly turns upfield after the catch, and displays a burst of speed. Creative when the ball is in his hands as a receiver and as a punt returner and follows blocks everywhere on the field. Battles opponents to come away with the reception and plays big football.  Negatives: Lacks elite deep speed and isn’t a home-run threat. Will struggle against larger cornerbacks.  Analysis: Dotson may not pass the eyeball test, as he’s neither the biggest nor the fastest receiver. Regardless, he’s a polished prospect who gets the most from his ability and plays big-time football. Jahan Dotson, Penn State (Height: 5’11” (22nd) Weight: 178 (7th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.43 seconds (74th), Vertical Jump: 36 inches (57th), Broad Jump: 10’1″ (46th), 3-Cone Drill: 7.28 seconds (8th)):   Bio: Jahan Dotson attended two different high schools as a prep player, spending his freshman, sophomore and senior years at Nazareth Area High School in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, while attending the Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey his junior year. His return to Nazareth put him in position to set some school records for the Blue Eagles, as he left Nazareth as their career leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.  After initially committing to UCLA to play football, he changed course and decided to stay close to home and play for Penn State. He appeared in eight games as a true freshman in 2018, and started all 13 of Penn State’s games the following season.  2020 was his breakout campaign, as he caught 52 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in just nine games. This past year, he caught 91 passes for 1,182 yards and 12 touchdowns, and set a school record when he caught a touchdown in six-straight games.  Stat to Know: While his size might lead you to believe he is a slot receiver only, Penn State used him almost exclusively on the outside. In 2020 for example, only 45 of his 648 snaps came from the slot per Pro Football Focus.  Strengths: Dotson is an experienced receiver who has spent the bulk of his college career playing on the outside. As such, he has developed a release package that gives him the ability to separate from press-aligned defenders as he comes off the line. With foot quickness, change-of-direction skills and a hand swat package to boot, Dotson can get open early and give his quarterback an option as the play unfolds.  Dotson also has great feel for the position, whether in terms of finding soft spots in zone coverage, separating late in the play in scramble-drill situations, or working back to the quarterback to make himself a target. On this play against Illinois, Dotson runs a wheel route that takes him nearly 20 yards downfield. But he works back to his quarterback, presenting himself as the best option on the play.  Dotson also has no fear attacking the middle of the field, even when the throw is off-target and he knows that the big hit is coming.  Dotson is also explosive after the catch, and has the ability to turn quick throws into big plays. His catch-and-run touchdown against Maryland is a prime example.  This long touchdown broke a 14-14 tie early in the fourth quarter, and is a great example of his ability after the catch.  Weaknesses: Despite playing primarily on the outside, Dotson’s best usage in the NFL might be in the slot. There were moments on film where longer cornerbacks were able to control him off the snap if they were aggressive and took the fight to him with a jam or a club technique. There were also moments on film where Dotson did a little too much with his footwork and route-running, and the quarterback was forced to double-clutch while he was waiting for the receiver to get into his break. As we have seen with some other options in this class, sometimes less is more.  Conclusion: His usage at Penn State gives Dotson the chance to play on the outside and in the slot at the next level. Teams that use receivers interchangeably — looking in the general direction of Josh McDaniels and the Las Vegas Raiders — might love that versatility. He might need to round out his release package and add some upper-body strength to function at his best on the outside in the NFL, but the foundation is there.  Comparison: The team over at Bleacher Report compared him to Tyler Lockett, and that comparison feels right to me.) His body control and fast feet are very difficult for defenders to match at full speed. Dotson is also one of the best ball-trackers at making tough catches on poorly thrown balls.  Blessed with enough size and speed to play outside or in the slot, Dotson is a versatile weapon and an NFL-ready route runner. Penn State Pro Day 2022: Jaquan Brisker, Jahan Dotson shine in front of decision-makers for Cowboys, 49ers, Packers, and more (Jahan Dotson shows impressive tracking ability at Penn State Pro Day:  Dotson put on a show during position drills at Penn State. The standout wideout ran crisp routes, caught the ball cleanly, and showed impressive tracking ability on deep throws.  Dotson, listed just under 5-foot-11 and 184 pounds, ran three separate “go” routes, and showed excellent body control, field awareness, and hand discipline on each rep. Dotson is a dynamic player with technical savvy that should do him well at the next level.  Dotson chose not to re-test his 40-yard dash time or his jumps at the pro day. Dotson ran a 4.43-second 40-yard dash and posted a 36-inch vertical jump in Indianapolis earlier this month. He landed a 10’1″ broad jump during the Combine and did 15 bench press reps at Penn State’s Pro Day.  Dotson spent a great deal of time with the New England Patriots following his drills. The meeting lasted for quite a while as other prospects worked out in front of the scouts.  As a senior, Dotson caught 91 passes for 1,182 yards and 12 touchdowns. 2022 NFL Draft: Pros and cons for PFF's top five wide receivers (5. JAHAN DOTSON, PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS (PFF Big Board Rank: 26) - Pros:  The Nittany Lion is a sudden and decisive route-runner. There's not a lot of wasted motion.  He has a flair for the acrobatic catch with a 5.2% drop rate over his career.  Dotson has terrific vision with the ball in his hands. He turns into a punt returner in space.  Cons:  He doesn't have the size that profiles to the outside, although he has long arms for his height.  He struggled to stack corners who get their hands on him. Jahan Dotson leads Penn State players in prominent positions in NFL draft analyst’s rankings (Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson returned to the Nittany Lions for his senior season to help erase memories of 2020′s 4-5 campaign, but he’s also boosted his own personal profile in the process.  ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. released his updated “Big Board” for the 2022 NFL Draft on Tuesday morning, and Dotson features prominently in it. Kiper, a longtime draft expert, ranked Dotson as his No. 16 overall prospect and No. 3 wide receiver in the class.  The 5-foot-11, 184-pound Dotson slipped down from No. 8 overall and the No. 1 wide receiver in the previous iteration of Kiper’s Big Board.  “Dotson is an explosive wideout having a great season,” Kiper wrote. “He had an incredible leaping catch against Illinois over the weekend, and look how open he is on this 49-yard touchdown against Wisconsin. Plus, check out Penn State’s first offensive play against Villanova, a 52-yard strike to Dotson in which he showed acceleration at the catch. While he had a few drops in 2019 and 2020, he hasn’t dropped any of his 78 targets this season.”  Dotson seems to turn in highlight-reel catches on a weekly basis, and he has 49 catches for 552 yards (11.27 yards per catch) and six touchdowns this season. Top 10 Wide Receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft: Drake London breaks into the top three (4) Jahan Dotson, Penn State:  He’s not an imposing specimen at 5’11”, 184 pounds. However, Jahan Dotson was one of the most consistently ranked players on our midseason consensus big board at PFN. All three NFL Draft analysts had Dotson in their Top 50, and one analyst had Dotson in their Top 25. That’s not by accident. Dotson is a player, and he’s proven that this year.  While his size isn’t overwhelming, Dotson negates any concerns regarding that size with his style of play. A player with punt return experience, Dotson is explosive, and he can absolutely separate — both laterally and vertically. He’s also shifty enough to generate yards after the catch in open space. 2022 NFL draft midseason winners and losers: 3 QBs moving up, 4 trending down (Penn State WR Jahan Dotson:  Dotson might have been relatively quiet against Iowa, but he still caught eight passes. He is otherwise quite the noisemaker for the Nittany Lions, and we need to remember this in light of QB Sean Clifford’s injury.   Dating back to last season, Dotson has 95 catches for 1,378 yards and 14 TD grabs in a 15-game span (along with a punt-return TD). The 5-foot-10, 178-pounder is going to need to run fast — really fast — at the scouting combine to compensate for his lack of size, but that’s the expectation in the scouting world.  We believe Dotson is a top-40 or 50 pick when it’s all said and done.) 2022 NFL Draft Wide Receiver Stock Watch: Jameson Williams emerges as wideout we need to take seriously (Jahan Dotson, Penn State: Stock Up.  Best catch - Dotson was held in check in Iowa's win over the Nittany Lions. His most impressive grab was this first down snag in which he climbed the ladder to move the chains in the first quarter.  Two of Dotson's vertical routes ended in an interception for Iowa, but they weren't necessarily his fault. Iowa did a tremendous job limiting the field-stretching burner in this game. College Football Wide Receiver Rankings 2021: Nevada, Memphis break through (9. Jahan Dotson, Penn State:  If we were in Marvel’s Multiverse, you’d have a hard time convincing me Jahan Dotson isn’t a variation of Spider-Man. Even if you discount his supreme vertical athleticism and coordination in midair, the Penn State wideout still has the stickiest hands in the nation. All that’s left is to see him use his webbing to corral an off-target pass, and my suspicions will be confirmed.  While he may have turned in his mask for a face mask, Dotson still has his superhero moments on the field. His ability to rise, contort, and gather imprecise throws has made him a highlight factory through five weeks.  It’s no surprise Dotson is accounting for 33% of his team’s passing production with 446 yards and 6 scores on 35 catches. He had to contort his body for a back-shoulder grab well above his frame. Most of his other work was done underneath, and he had an electric punt return in the fourth quarter that featured a nasty juke at the outset of the return to find a lane. 2022 NFL Draft WR Watch: USC's Drake London shining (Jahan Dotson, Penn State: Stock Up - We saw "chain-mover" Dotson in Penn State's thrilling "White Out" win over Auburn on Saturday night -- 10 catches for 78 yards with a touchdown. I'm giving him a "stock up" label because of how hard he worked for those 78 yards. There was a nasty juke in the open field early in the game on an underneath route, and later in the first half, a tremendous extension after elevating for the football on a deep over route. Early in the fourth, he was harassed on a comeback route but held onto the football to move the chains. Dotson is explosive but has a blue-collar vibe to his game. College Football Players of the Week: Matt Corral and Calvin Austin best of Week 3 (WR Jahan Dotson, Penn State:  Just like Gardner, Jahan Dotson’s stat line isn’t super impressive, but he deserves to be here. Week 3 of college football was a big one for Penn State, and Dotson shined in the spotlight.  Dotson caught 10 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown, but some of his catches came in big moments during the win against Auburn. His catch radius is insane, and he frequently displayed his ability to catch a pass thrown anywhere.  On Saturday night, Sean Clifford played a good game, but he owes Dotson a hat tip on a few passes. If Dotson didn’t have the stickiest hands in the game, this could have been a different outcome. Luckily for Penn State, Dotson was on his game against the Tigers.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 1 (Jahan Dotson, CB, Penn State:  Dotson provided some huge plays to lead Penn State to the road upset over Wisconsin, but it would have been a prolific game if Dotson had a competent quarterback to work with. In the second quarter, Dotson burned Wisconsin coverage to get wide open what would have been an 87-yard touchdown, but Clifford missed on the throw. Clifford and Penn State did a terrible job of getting the ball into Dotson's hands throughout the first half . In the third quarter, Dotson got wide open for a 49-yard touchdown as Wisconsin had blown zone coverage and forgot to cover the speedster. Clifford didn't miss him this time, letting him coast into the end zone for his first touchdown of the year.  Dotson ran another great route late in the third quarter to get wide open running deep down the field. It should have been a 70-yard touchdown, but Clifford missed the throw again. Early in the fourth quarter, Dotson ran by the Badgers safety and was wide open for a 42-yard completion. Dotson had to slow up and wait for the ball, and if the pass hit him in stride, it would have been a touchdown of over 60 yards. Dotson's stat line of five receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown does not tell the story of how phenomenal he was. If Clifford were more capable, Dotson would have had a game of 250-300 yards receiving and three or four touchdowns.  Dotson is an interesting prospect for the next level. He has game-breaking speed yet is strong for his size and can win on contested catches. Dotson is an ultrafast wide receiver who stretches defenses vertically and is a threat to score on any reception. The Wisconsin tape is going to help his draft grade.) 2022 NFL Draft WR Watch: Alabama's Metchie next in line (Jahan Dotson, Penn State: Stock Steady - Yes, the Wisconsin-Penn State game made my eyes burn too. Fortunately for those who actually enjoy watching the scoreboard being put to use, Dotson was schemed open for a long touchdown to open the scoring -- in the third quarter (!) -- and was found on a similar vertical route through a confused coverage for another big-gainer in the fourth quarter. Dotson wasn't amazing against the Badgers, but he reminded everybody of one thing -- he can scoot.) Jahan Dotson, WR, Penn State (5-11, 184):  After making one of the best one-handed catches of the 2020 college football season against Ohio State, Jahan (pronounced juh-HAHN) Dotson told reporters he sees the football as "a million dollars in the air. You want it, you go get it." Dotson is one of the quickest receivers in the country, so he can win on short, intermediate and deep routes. Draft: Comprehensive WR class primer (Chris Olave, Ohio State (Jahan Dotson, Penn State
(Reminds me of: Diontae Johnson.  Feel like: Early Round 2 talent.  How he wins: Twitch, surprising catch radius.  Needs to improve: Physicality):  Dotson could get drafted by his 2020 Ohio State film alone. It was that dominant (then again, I didn't think very much of Shaun Wade, whom Dotson roasted all game). Anyway, he's quietly been accumulating stats since his freshman season and has averaged 17.1 yards per grab at Penn State. And he's done it with mostly blah quarterback play the past two years. Dotson is a touch small, but the NFL is in a small-receiver renaissance, right? Dotson, a good, not yet great route runner and does need to bulk up to power through contact within the first five yards off the line.) Big Ten 2022 NFL Draft prospects and scouting reports (Jahan Dotson, WR (Grade: 3.56 | Projected Round: 4th):  Jahan Dotson is a consistent pass catcher with solid speed. Dotson consistently separates from defenders, finds ways to come free, and possesses reliable hands. Some scouts grade Dotson as a second-round prospect, and while I think he has that potential, I stamped him with a fourth-round grade.)
