My Guys: Ben Linsey's top targets in the 2022 NFL Draft (WR DAVID BELL, PURDUE BOILERMAKERS: Bell’s draft stock has taken a nosedive, as the plot below of his expected draft position over time from Grinding the Mocks illustrates. That’s what happens when you run a 4.68-second 40-yard dash — an eighth-percentile mark at the position — but there’s plenty of reason to believe that mediocre time will only create value for teams smart enough to overlook it late on Day 2 or early on Day 3. Bell did put up a 1.56-second 10-yard split (63rd percentile among wide receivers), which has proven to be the more important number when projecting NFL production. Speed isn’t where Bell wins, though, and that’s fine. There are plenty of highly productive NFL receivers who didn’t light the world on fire in the 40-yard dash. Bell cleared 80 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards as a true freshman with Purdue in 2019, and he put up three consecutive seasons with a 77.0-plus PFF receiving grade. David Bell, Purdue (Height: 6’1″ (51st) Weight: 212 (76th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.65 seconds (6th), Vertical Jump: 33 inches (19th), Broad Jump: 9’10” (26th), 3-Cone Drill: 7.14 seconds (17th), 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.57 seconds (2nd)): Bio: David Bell was a well-rounded athlete at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis. He caught passes in the fall and doled them out on the hardwood in the winter. Bell was a member of Warren Central’s Class 4A State Championship Basketball Team, which went undefeated the year they won the state title. His senior year, he caught 85 passes for 1,542 yards and 22 touchdowns, and was named the Male Athlete of the Year by the Indianapolis Star, as well as the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year. Warren Central won the 6A State title that season. While Penn State and Ohio State were hoping he would commit to one of their schools, Bell decided to stay closer to home and play at Purdue. He was a starter as a true freshman, and caught 86 passes for 1,035 yards and seven touchdowns. Playing in just six games during the shortened 2020 season, Bell still managed to catch 53 passes for 625 yards and eight scores. Last season was his most productive on campus, as he caught 93 passes for 1,286 yards and six scores. Stat to Know: Bell is a weapon after the catch. According to Pro Football Focus charting data, he broke 25 tackles last year, third most among college receivers. Strengths: At the outset, Bell is a fascinating evaluation. Others are much higher on him than I am, and you can see why. He is a natural receiver and a weapon after the catch. He has seen the bulk of his work on the outside — he played just 122 of his 739 snaps in the slot last season per PFF — and has a good release package to beat press-aligned defenders. He can be sudden and explosive off the line, and very confident in his hands. One of the things that Bell does best is stress the leverage of the nearest defender. He has a great feel for how to set up cornerbacks off the line, putting them in a poor position with his release and angles before snapping off routes and getting separation on his cuts. Studying him, I felt he was at his best working to the inside of the field, and not on out-breaking routes. On slants, digs and other in-cuts he is aggressive and sudden in his effort to get across the face of the defender. The one-play, elevator pitch for Bell might be this catch against Iowa. Facing a defender playing off him, with outside leverage, Bell bends outside at the top of his stem to set the defender up for his break to the post, and then tracks the football perfectly for the huge play. Weaknesses: The questions start with his athleticism. At times you could see him struggle to maintain separation against cornerbacks, and that showed up in Indianapolis. Bell was one of the players who left the Combine with some work to do. While he hoped to improve on that 40-yard dash time at his Pro Day, he clocked in at an unofficial 4.68. This could be a prime case of “tape versus testing,” as you can see Bell separate on film thanks to his route-running and release package off the line. But will that continue in the NFL? The other area I think he could improve is with respect to his releases off the line. When he is sudden and decisive, he wins. When he takes his time or relies too much on a hesitation move off the line, defenders can get the best of him. Conclusion: Opinions on Bell vary across the board. The Draft Network, for example, has him currently ranked as the seventh receiver in the class and a Top 50 player overall. By contract, in the PFF draft guide Mike Renner has him as the 17th-ranked receiver, and outside the Top 100. There is a path to NFL success for Bell, thanks to his route-running and ability after the catch, but likely as a second or third option on teams. Signed with: Jaguars (Prospect with similar traits: Purdue's David Bell): Kirk ran 4.47 at the 2018 combine -- compared to Bell's 4.65 -- but the two receivers win by playing at their own pace, running methodical routes and tracking the football with laser-like precision down the field. It's almost as if they understand their limitations and have devised plans to not allow those limitations to hinder their production on the field. Bell was better in college tracking it deep, but Kirk has becomes better in scenarios with corners draped on him deep. He converted 13 of 19 contested-catch opportunities in 2021. Not bad for a wideout with a vertical of just 35.5 inches in a league where cornerbacks with 40-inch verticals dot every roster. Bell is bound to be picked later than Kirk was -- No. 47 overall -- but has the nuanced skill to be a quality secondary or tertiary contributor early in his pro career before maturing into a 900-plus-yard wideout near the end of his rookie deal. Also like Kirk, Bell may be best in the slot in the NFL, so the extra space will afford him more of a chance to get open regularly.) That number is made more concerning when you think back to Bell’s play style. He has some route-running savvy, but he’s not an elite separator, and his routes aren’t very sudden.
