2022 NFL Draft wide receiver rankings: Another stacked class of pass catching talent (5.  Jameson Williams, Alabama:  A fully healthy Williams would have been in consideration as the first wideout drafted. Instead, the torn ACL that took him out of last winter’s National Championship Game makes him a bit of a mystery and could make him a pretty solid consolation prize for a needy team who misses out on London or Wilson.  Williams has the top-line speed and shiftiness that commands constant over-the-top help. When he doesn’t get it, well …  After failing to crack Ohio State’s stacked wideout rotation, Williams went to a different blue blood and played option 1b to John Metchie’s 1a. Even with opposing defenses shading his way, he proved he’s a player capable of turning an ounce of daylight into pounds of production.  This combination of skills added up to 19.9 yards per reception and the added bonus of 35 yards per kick return (including a pair of touchdowns). His ability to track and adjust to the ball make him more than just an intriguing combination of tools. At Alabama, Williams looked every bit an NFL WR1.  There are negatives, though. He’s a lean wideout at about 180 pounds on his 6-foot-2 frame, which can allow bigger defensive backs to blast through him on 50/50 balls. He’s not going to be the same beast in traffic as a player like Burks, but he can remedy that by running right out of gridlock. His knee is a minor question and he’ll have to prove he can maintain 2021’s breakthrough. 2022 NFL Draft: Who should be the first wide receiver taken off the board? (DeAngelo Hall: Jameson Williams has the most talent and upside of any wide receiver prospect. Though he's recovering from an ACL injury, that particular injury isn't the knockout punch it once was. When healthy, Williams will show once again that he can run every route, has explosive game-breaking speed and is electric with the ball in his hands. 2022 NFL Draft: Wide receiver prospect superlatives (BEST DEEP THREAT: JAMESON WILLIAMS, ALABAMA - This one isn’t up for debate. The only debate is how fast Williams would have run the 40-yard dash had he not torn his ACL in the National Championship Game. He makes corners with verified 4.3s look slow, and that’s tough to do. Not only can he run fast in a straight line, but he’s also exceptional at controlling his speed to lull defensive backs to sleep. 2022 NFL Draft: Gauging the level of concern for notable injured prospects (WR JAMESON WILLIAMS, ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE - Injury: Torn ACL in the 2021-22 National Championship.  Williams would be more in the WR1 conversation if he hadn’t torn his ACL in Alabama’s title game loss. That said, he still looks like a top-20 lock in the 2022 NFL Draft.  At the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, Williams said he’s on track to be ready for training camp and the start of the regular season. With that early recovery timeline and his game-breaking speed, the former Ohio State transfer should be one of the first four pass-catchers taken — and within the first 17 picks. Williams would have lit the 40-yard dash on fire had he been healthy. His wheels helped him rack up an FBS-leading 12 touchdowns of 20 or more yards.  While his ability to effectively get off press coverage is suspect, as well as his lack of muscle mass, his big-play ability eases those concerns. Jameson Williams, Alabama (Height: 6’1″ (59th) Weight: 179 (9th)):  Bio: Jameson Williams starred on the football team for Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School in St. Louis in the fall, and turned his attention to the track in the spring. He caught 68 passes for 1,626 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior, and was named an Under Armour All-American for his achievements. He also won the 300 meter hurdles in two-straight seasons, setting a state record in 2017.  A four-star prospect according to scouting services, Williams had no shortage of scholarship offers. He turned down teams like UCLA, Alabama and Oregon to start his college career at Ohio State. After playing two seasons with the Buckeyes, catching 15 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns over three years, he announced he would transfer to Alabama.  Williams was an immediate impact player for the Crimson Tide in 2021, catching 79 passes for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was named a First-Team All-SEC player, as well as a First-Team All-American.  Stat to Know: Williams is, at least on paper, the most explosive receiver in this class. According to Pro Football Focus charting data, he averaged 20 yards per catch this season.  Strengths: Williams is a shifty, explosive receiver with the change-of-direction skills to work himself open early in the down, the long speed to separate late in the down, and the burst to create after the catch. Williams relies on footwork and stutter-step moves to beat press-aligned defenders after the snap, and snaps off his routes well with crisp breaks and fluid movement skills.  One of the things that Williams does extremely well is transition immediately from receiver to athlete after the catch. On this play against Florida, Williams sits down in a soft spot of zone coverage, but makes an explosive transition to ball-carrier, exploding upfield for yardage after the catch.  That ability to separate early in the down, and burst away from defenders after the catch, makes him a home-run hitter even on quick game concepts.  But Williams is not a scheme-specific receiver, as his long speed and route-running skills helps him create in the downfield passing game as well. His ability to quickly change directions, and maintain speed on breaks, makes him a threat on vertical routes as well.  Weaknesses: Williams is coming off an ACL injury which he suffered in the National Championship game, but his rehabilitation looks to be progressing well and he could be on track to participate at the start of training camp.  Williams also has a thinner frame, which showed up at times against more physical cornerbacks. He will see more of that at the next level, but as we saw last year with DeVonta Smith, if you can separate early in the down, you can still operate against such cornerbacks.  Then there is the fact that Williams was stuck behind two other members of this class, Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, during his time at Ohio State and his one year of production came after a transfer. While his play on the field should speak for itself, some might wonder why he could not crack the Ohio State lineup.  Conclusion: Williams is a scheme-diverse receiver who can win early in the down, late in the down, and everywhere in the middle. 2022 NFL Draft: Ranking the top 17 WRs in this year’s class (Tier 1 - Jameson Williams (Alabama), 6-foot-1, 179 pounds
Next on the list is another receiver that also did not test at the combine and probably won’t be there by the time the Lions are on the clock with the second pick. Despite not testing, we know who Williams is. He’s the fastest receiver in the draft and has been said to have hit 23 mph in practice per Alabama’s GPS tracking system. To put that in perspective, the highest MPH output in 2021 was Colts RB Jonathan Taylor at 22.13 MPH. And only Tyreek Hill (23.24 MPH) and Raheem Mostert (23.09 MPH) have surpassed the threshold since the NFL introduced Next Gen Stats.  Speed is the most desirable trait in the NFL when it comes to most positions, but especially at wide receiver. We’ve seen many speedy prospects selected in the first round that are dealing with serious injuries because teams are willing to take that risk for the potential of a player that can change the game. Look at Hollywood Brown, selected 25th overall despite dealing with a Lisfranc injury and a fragile frame. Or John Ross at 9th overall who decided to test before undergoing torn labrum surgery prior to the Draft.  Williams has a larger frame than those two and is coming off of a torn ACL, an injury that the sports medicine world has been able to treat much better over the years. Considering this, plus the talent, I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get selected prior to the Lions’ second pick in the first round. Teams put too much value on speed for him to be there, and he’s more than just a speed demon when you watch him play. Get this kid the ball in space and he’s going to make plays. NFL Draft prospects whose combine shouldn't hurt stock (Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama:  The Crimson Tide receiver was listed at 189 pounds during the season and checked in at just 179 pounds. Williams suffered a torn ACL in the national championship game against Georgia in January. Therefore, he was not in a place where he could compete at the NFL combine. If he had, fans probably would have seen another athlete run the 40-yard dash in the 4.2s. Considering his injury, Williams has not been able to work out at the same level of others and his season ended only two months ago. Despite the concerning size, he should have no problem putting that weight back on and will probably be taken earlier in the draft than people expect.) NFL Draft Combine Rumors: Jaguars High on Stingley, Jameson Williams; Dislike Thibodeaux (The Jaguars badly want to trade down, and if they do, a potential target for them could be Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams. They feel that Williams could be the top receiver in the draft if he were healthy, as they love his speed and play-making ability. If the injury causes Williams to slip to Dau 2, Jacksonville could end that fall at the top of the second round with pick 33. However, that seems unlikely that Williams will fall out of the first round, and Jacksonville feels they have too many needs to give up picks in a trade up from 33.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Week 12 (Up - Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama:  Williams has been an electric playmaker this season, and he continued in that fashion against Arkansas. His elite speed and explosion dominated the Razorbacks secondary, which was completely incapable of running with the ultra-fast wideout.  In the second quarter, Williams ran a route from the slot and burned a corner and a safety to get open deep down the field. Bryce Young hit Williams in stride, and he raced the remaining 30 yards for a 79-yard touchdown. Just before halftime, Williams ran a quick slant and got hit on the run. 2022 NFL Draft Wide Receiver Stock Watch: Jameson Williams emerges as wideout we need to take seriously (Jameson Williams, Alabama: Stock Up.  Best catch - In the third quarter, Williams put his leaping skills and the strength of his hands on display when elevated for a high throw from Young and held onto the football after getting hit on his side by a defender.  Later in the third, he got a few steps on the outside corner on a go route for a touchdown. He was super-slippery on a screen in the fourth quarter and flashed some power. His burst and vision were noticeable on a late dig route too.
