PFN Cummings (1. Detroit Lions: C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State: When two quarterbacks are as close as C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young for QB1, sometimes size can be the deciding factor. Stroud’s frame gives him more security, but he’s also a very exciting prospect in his own right. No quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft operates better within structure than Stroud, but he also has enough athleticism to work the pocket and the arm talent to layer throws into microscopic windows. Stroud, with Detroit’s weapons and blocking, could grow to be an elite NFL QB. 14. Detroit Lions (From LAR): Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame: Now that the Detroit Lions have traded T.J. Hockenson to the Minnesota Vikings, they’re essentially the floor for Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer at 14th overall. Detroit’s early-round résumé at TE isn’t great outside of Hockenson, but Mayer has the tools to be a terrific investment. Mayer doesn’t have the flash of Kyle Pitts or future prospect Brock Bowers. But his athleticism and foot speed are definite strengths. Beyond that, he’s an exceedingly well-rounded player with the feel as a route runner, high-end catching instincts and hand strength, and reliability in clutch moments. 32. Detroit Lions: Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina: Adding Stroud at QB gives Detroit a massive facelift on offense, but you can never have enough weapons for your young passer. Walter football Charlie (1. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama: The Lions could choose to move on from Jared Goff after this season without any salary-cap pain. They also could keep Goff for 2023 while developing a future starter behind him. Goff is a competent pro starter, but not a championship-caliber quarterback, and Detroit needs an upgrade over him. In 2022, Young has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,202 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has picked up 154 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as well. Young (5-11, 194) took over as Alabama's starting quarterback in 2021, and there was a lot of hype about him in the scouting community. Some sources with college teams say they think he could end up being a better college quarterback than Tua Tagovailoa or Mac Jones. Some NFL sources believe Young's skill set and style of play are similar to those of Kyler Murray. In 2021, Young completed 67 percent of his passes for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns and seven interceptions. 14. S Antonio Johnson: The Lions need a lot of help in the secondary. Johnson could help them at corner and safety. Johnson has 48 tackles, a sack and one pass broken up thus far this season. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder is a massive slot corner who broke out for the Aggies in 2021. The sophomore recorded 79 tackles, an interception and five passes defended on the year. Johnson has phenomenal length and size to match up against NFL receivers while also showing fabulous instincts and tackling ability as a safety. Johnson has also lined up as a slot corner and dime linebacker. He is an outstanding defensive back who is a Swiss Army knife to solve coverage problems for his defense. So far in 2022, Witherspoon has 21 tackles, an interception and 11 passes defended. Charbonnet ran well in 2021, ripping off yards in large chunks for the Bruins. He has a strong build and a burst to accelerate into the secondary. Draft Tek (2. QB Bryce Young: As if we needed confirmation, the Lions officially threw in the towel on 2022 this week when they dispatched Tight End T.J. Hockensen to Minnesota for a so-so draft pick upgrade. At 1-6, any pretense of being a happy surprise this year is gone, as are the chances of Jared Goff making a long-term claim on the team's QB job. Instead, the Lions are ripping it down to the studs and marshalling draft capital for what still looks like a lengthy rebuild ahead. With the team nestled in the top-2 of next year's draft it becomes a question of where they land and whether they prefer the size and arm talent of C.J. Stroud or the elite elusiveness and all-around game of Bryce Young. This roll of the draft dice yields Young, the decorated blue chipper from Alabama with big-game and big-accolade experience galore. The big question ahead will be how long Coach Dan Campbell is around to dispense folksy wisdom in Young's direction. 18. LB Trenton Simpson: The Lions' pothole of a season so far has many causes, but none are more obvious than the performance of the defense. Last in the league in a handful of key categories, the unit is clearly undertalented and lacks the depth to overcome injuries. While rookie pass rusher Aiden Hutchinson has been deployed as a rush LB and rookie fifth-rounder Malcolm Rodriguez shows starter potential, the unit still lacks a true top-caliber 'backer to turn around their league-worst 3rd Down stop percentage. Trenton Simpson has been a key cog in Clemson's defense, and he figures to flash star potential at the next level. He has the speed, explosiveness and technique to rush the passer one down and cover a tight end the next. At 240 pounds, he runs a sub-4.4 40 and benches 375 pounds. In tandem with Hutch and Rodrigo, he can provide much-needed stoutness in the middle of the Lions' D. SI NFL Draft Borowsky (1. Detroit Lions: QB Will Levis, Kentucky: If Levis had the talent around him that Stroud and Young had, he'd be far and away the best quarterback in the country. Nevertheless, Levis possesses unbelievable tools, is pro-ready and has the moxie to help speed up Detroit's rebuild. He'd have a great offensive line, solid weapons and an established run game. Levis has the most upside out of any player in the class, so putting him in an offense like Detroit's will allow him to reach his potential. 13. C.J. Stroud, Ohio State: QB1 goes No. 1. If the Lions pick first, as it increasingly looks like they will, they probably have to take a quarterback. Jared Goff has not gotten the job done, and Detroit is not a winning team—let alone a playoff team—with him under center. (Moreover, Detroit can save a boatload of salary cap cash by moving on from Goff this offseason.) Stroud is the presumptive first-overall pick. He is a complete prospect who can make throws at all levels of the field. Stroud does not have to travel far from Columbus to Detroit; he could be the answer for the long-suffering Lions. 20. Detroit Lions (via Los Angeles Rams) — WR Kayshon Boutte, LSU: With C.J. Stroud in tow, the Lions use their extra first-round pick to add a top weapon for their new franchise quarterback. Many considered Boutte an early first-round talent before the season got underway, but this year, the LSU standout got off to a slow start. Nevertheless, Boutte has serious talent and demonstrated that he could be a No. 1 wide receiver at the next level. A fearless pass catcher who is not afraid to go over the middle, Boutte runs great routes and wins matchups at the point of attack. He has also grown into a leader at LSU. Young is a Heisman Trophy winner who may be the best quarterback in Alabama program history. Young’s abilities as a playmaker give him the edge for now, but it’s nearly a coin flip between these two future stars. 20.
