Did Packers find a path forward in loss to Bills?: NFC North analysis (Lions Drop Another Close One - I feel like I say it every week, but the poor Detroit Lions. They've played five one-score games and are 1-4 in such contests. It was the tale of yet another week against the Miami Dolphins at home Sunday. This time stung even more because at one point, Detroit had a 14-point lead. The Dolphins didn't score the go-ahead touchdown until the very end of the third quarter, leaving the Lions plenty of time to retake the lead, theoretically.  Only they didn't. The defense didn't give up another point, but the offense, once the highest scoring unit in the league, also didn't score another point and the Lions dropped a heartbreaker by a score of 31-27. MOn Monday, the Lions fired their defensive backs coach, Aubrey Pleasant. One thing we learned from each team in Week 8 (Detroit Lions - The pass defense can't stop anyone: Tua Tagovailoa had a field day against the Lions pass defense, a unit that game up a season-high 369 yards against one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Tagovailoa was 15 of 18 for 290 yards and three touchdowns on passes of 10-plus air yards against the Lions secondary, as Detroit had no answer for him.   On third down, Tagovailoa was 9 of 10 for 139 yards with two touchdowns as the Lions defense gave up 8 of 12 third down conversions. Trade Grades:


CBS Trade grades: Lions deal Hockenson to Vikings (Vikings: A.  Even if Smith Jr. were healthy, they could've used help at tight end. Hockenson, meanwhile, is better than most at his position when healthy. And all the Vikings gave up to get him -- not only for 2022, but through at least 2023 on a reasonable deal -- was the equivalent of a second-rounder. That, friends, is proof that Adofo-Mensah knows how to make a trade. Hockenson should be an instant safety valve for Kirk Cousins, helping Minnesota further its run in the NFC.  Lions: D+.  Detroit absolutely deserved to be dealing ahead of the deadline, but why on Earth was their big play to sell off one of their few proven building blocks? Hockenson may command a lucrative salary down the line, and he's had his own injury history, but even the draft picks they're getting are far from guaranteed to replace the former No. 8 overall pick's production. Walter football Trade Grade (Vikings acquire TE T.J. Hockenson, 2023 4th-round pick, conditional 2024 4th-round pick from Lions for 2023 2nd-round pick, 2024 third-round pick.  Minnesota's front office made some dubious decisions during the 2023 NFL Draft, and the head-scratching choices continue. They acquired T.J. Hockenson from the Lions for two second-day selections. They also obtained a fourth-round pick from Detroit.  Hockenson is a talented player, but he's just a tight end. Non-elite tight ends who are paid big contracts often disappoint, and Minnesota will have to pay Hockenson handsomely in the near future. In addition to that, the Vikings surrendered two second-day picks for this dilemma. It's not ideal, especially when considering the team already had Irv Smith Jr. on the roster. There's no doubt that Hockenson is better than Smith, but he wasn't a necessary addition, especially when considering both the compensation and impending contract.  As for the Lions, they did well to offload a soon-to-be highly priced tight end for two premium picks. I'm not a big fan of sending Hockenson to a divisional rival, but that's the only thing wrong with this trade. Detroit will miss Hockenson, but it'll have plenty of weapons for either C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young with Jameson Williams set to return from injury soon to join Amon-Ra St. Brown, D.J.
