NFL QB Index, Week 3: Sam Howell vaults into top 15; Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts slip (11. Jared Goff - 2023 stats: 2 games | 71.4 pct | 576 pass yds | 8.2 ypa | 4 pass TD | 1 INT | -1 rush yds | 0 rush TD | 0 fumbles. I jinxed Goff last week when I wrote about his interception-less streak, which was flirting with history entering Week 2. His pick-six in the fourth quarter completely flipped the game in favor of the Seahawks, forcing the Lions to attempt to claw their way back in the final minutes. An explosive afternoon in Detroit saw Goff lead a touchdown drive later in the fourth quarter, connecting with Sam LaPorta on two crucial completions before the QB found Josh Reynolds on a well-placed inside pass in the end zone for a touchdown, cutting Seattle’s lead to three. Another completion to Reynolds helped the Lions move into field goal range, eventually sending the shootout into overtime. Goff’s contributions would end there, though, as Detroit failed to win possession before the game was over. I think a lot of people did not expect a repeat of the fireworks show we saw between these two teams last season, but we were wrong. The interception proved crucial, but aside from that, Goff continued to execute Detroit’s offense efficiently. They might want to reconsider their aggression on fourth down, though.): https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-qb-index-week-3-sam-howell-vaults-into-top-15-joe-burrow-jalen-hurts-slip
Ranking the NFL’s top-5 head coaching candidates, Week 3: Hello, Lions’ Ben Johnson (1. Ben Johnson, Detroit Lions: Look, the Lions are actually good, and they’re probably the favorites to win the NFC North for the first time in more than 30 years. Sorry to blow your mind. So, I know they’re not used to this, but usually, bad teams want to poach coaches from good teams. It’s not illogical or unheard of, but it’s something that hasn’t happened to the Lions for a long time. And this winter, everyone’s going to want a piece of Ben Johnson — the next potential McVay-, McDaniel-, Shanahan-level innovator. (Gird your loins, Lions fans. This is your new reality — replacing quality coordinators every couple of years or so.). Johnson is the ingenious offensive brain to Dan Campbell’s culture-shifting brawn. He is the person who gave Jared Goff a second act as a field-tilting franchise quarterback. He is the person who helped turn Amon-Ra St. Brown into the NFL’s premier slot receiver. He is the person who uses the league’s best offensive line to create a diverse and multifaceted running game no front seven could possibly have an answer for. The results bear themselves out. After fielding a top-4 offense in 2022, the Lions have a top-3 offense in 2023. They, quite literally, picked up where they left off and are probably even better. The Lions are so good offensively that I don’t even think a Lions’ Godfather-like offer for Johnson would convince him to stay at this point. He will have his pick of the litter (pun intended) of head coaching opportunities. Fledgling franchises are going to roll out a red carpet for him. Shoot, if Johnson gets really lucky, there’s a realistic chance he will be the guy who gets to mold the gifted Caleb Williams like a ball of clay. Williams would be silly to pass up on the opportunity. Heavens help the NFL if Williams enters the league with Johnson as his head coach and play-caller.): https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-head-coach-candidate-rankings-week-3-ben-johnson-eric-bieniemy
NFL Defense Rankings: Cowboys, Bills, and Saints Continue Dominance in Week 2 (20. Detroit Lions: The Lions defense which looked stout against an underperforming Chiefs offense leaked against the Seattle Seahawks. While playing against two backup offensive tackles, Detroit only managed to put Geno Smith on the ground once. In the process, they also lost Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Aidan Hutchinson is flashing greatness, but he must become more consistent with his snap timing and get-off because the high-end physical qualities are there with him.): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-defense-rankings/
Best Offensive Lines in the NFL 2023: Raiders, Dolphins, and Colts Surge Ahead After Week 2 (3. Detroit Lions - LT Taylor Decker, LG Jonah Jackson, C Frank Ragnow, RG Halapoulivaati Vaitai, RT Penei Sewell. Vaitai might be replaced by Graham Glasgow for a short stretch, but he has avoided an IR designation for now. The Detroit Lions offense has been humming right along so far in 2023.): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/best-offensive-lines-nfl-rankings/
