2023 NFL season, Week 3: What We Learned from Sunday's games (Nick Shook's takeaways:  1. Detroit grinds out a win. The Lions have undoubtedly figured out the takeoff portion of their offensive flight through three weeks, and once again on Sunday, they reached cruising altitude relatively easily. But the turbulence made this trip bumpy at times. Take their 13-play, 73-yard drive late in the second quarter, when they had five chances to score from a goal-to-go situation, and ended up settling for a field goal. Atlanta's defense didn't make the going easy on the Lions, but chunks of this game remained rather positive. Jared Goff is very comfortable in the offense and executes it well, save for the occasional missed throw. The Lions missed David Montgomery on Sunday, yet they still managed to rush for 115 yards. Most of the game went well -- they just didn't produce the points total one might have expected from a unit that was humming for a good portion of the game. Instead, they had to dig deep to find solutions. Goff's touchdown run in the fourth quarter served as a great example, icing a solid victory.  2.  You have to love the Falcons' toughness. Offensively, it was a day the Falcons will want to forget. None of their playmakers were able to string anything together, Younghoe Koo missed a field goal and they converted just 4-of-14 third-down attempts. But this team fights, and went toe-to-toe with the Lions for much of this game, even if it wasn't reflected on the scoreboard. Detroit earned this win, no doubt, and the Falcons have some things to work out offensively, but I have come to appreciate their attitude. They matched Detroit on third down (4-14 on both sides) and kept the game within reach until the fourth quarter. They're certainly not going to let anyone walk over them, even if QB Desmond Ridder wasn't good enough to lead them to a win on Sunday.  3.  Lions' young cats lead the way. Detroit's much-discussed, often-criticized 2023 draft class has done nothing but thumb its nose at the haters through three weeks. Brian Branch, Sam LaPorta and Jack Campbell all made plays that were pivotal to Detroit's win on Sunday. LaPorta recorded his first career touchdown reception, Campbell notched his first career sack and Branch was a defensive hammer who set the tone throughout the game for Detroit. If Jahmyr Gibbs can get it going a bit more, we'll have no reason to knock any of GM Brad Holmes' selections made in April, because they're all producing.  Next Gen Stat of the game: Sam LaPorta was wide open on his first career touchdown catch, creating 12 yards of separation on the 45-yard scoring strike, the second-most separation gained by a receiver on a scoring play this season.  NFL Research: Sam LaPorta joined T.J. NFL Winners and Losers: Dolphins hang 70 points on Broncos, Tua's MVP case gets a push (Winners - Detroit Lions defense, too: It's probably not fair that the Lions had to endure questions about their legitimacy after their first loss of the season last week, but this is the Lions we're talking about. Everyone expects the worst.  The Lions are just fine. The defense, which didn't have a good day against the Seattle Seahawks last week, was excellent against the Atlanta Falcons in a key 20-6 win. Atlanta has a lot of star players but also big quarterback questions with Desmond Ridder, and the Lions exposed that. The Falcons gained just 183 yards.  The Lions already had the win over the Kansas City Chiefs in their back pocket, and now they're 2-1 after an impressive win over the Falcons. NFL Week 3 Rookie Rankings: De’Von Achane, C.J. Stroud Steal the Show (3. Sam LaPorta, TE, Detroit Lions:  I truly split hairs between Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch for the third spot this week. LaPorta scored his first career touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons and has been off to a scorching hot start this season.  LaPorta set an NFL record for the most receptions by a rookie tight end through their first three games with 18. Only T.J. Hockenson has more receptions than LaPorta this season, and no tight ends have more yards than LaPorta thus far in 2023.  4. Brian Branch, DB, Detroit Lions
Branch stole the show early on in the Detroit Lion’s Week 1 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and has continued his excellent play for the Lions. The second-rounder finished with 11 solo tackles, three tackles for loss, and a couple of pass breakups.  Branch was seemingly everywhere for the Lions’ defense, matching up with Kyle Pitts and Drake London in coverage but also shutting down Bijan Robinson in the run game. Grades:

CBS (Lions Grade:  A-.  The Lions defense should probably stand up and take a bow after this game. The Detroit defense was basically a brickwall, especially when going up against Falcons rookie Bijan Robinson, who was held to just 33 yards. Led by Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions' pass rush was just as ferocious with seven sacks of Desmond Ridder (Hutchinson had two of those). The Lions offense continues to look well-rounded -- three players had more than 80 total yards -- and although this team had a hiccup last week against Seattle. this team now appears to be back on track.
