Week 9 Predictions

SN Iyer (Vikings at Lions (-9, 48 o/u):  J.J. McCarthy has a good chance to finally return at starting QB for Minnesota, but now a growing problem is a defense breaking down in many areas, especially against the run and aggressive downfield passing. The Lions can do just that with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery setting up Jared Goff to stretch the field well. The Vikings' mini-bye is negated by the Lions' actual bye. Dan Campbell has gone 2-4 after the bye, but his team goes against that grain here.  Pick: Lions win 34-17 and cover the spread.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-against-spread-week-9/782b477f429567527928aa44

SN Bender (Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions (-8.5):  This line has dropped a half point. The Lions are 2-2-1 S/U after a bye week under Dan Campbell. How will Minnesota slow down a Detroit offense that ranks third in the NFL with 30.7 points per game? The Lions have won the last three home meetings by 10 points or more and average 36.7 points at Ford Field.   Pick: Lions 36, Vikings 22):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-9/86e77db6771728d30325a7a4

CBS Prisco (Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions (-8.5):  The Vikings are playing with 10 days rest, while the Lions are coming off a much-needed bye. The Lions will be getting some injured players back healthy, while the Vikings will get J.J. McCarthy back at quarterback. He will face a tough challenge trying to keep up with the Lions offense. Look for a big day from Jared Goff as the Lions win it.  Pick: Lions 31, Vikings 20):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/priscos-week-9-nfl-picks-best-bets-gambling-bills-beat-chiefs/

Pro Picks: Chiefs will edge Bills on Harrison Butker’s field goal as time expires (MINNESOTA (3-4) at DETROIT (5-2) - Line: Lions minus 8 1/2.  J.J. McCarthy is expected to return for the Vikings after missing five games with an ankle injury. The offensive line has to protect him better than they did for Carson Wentz. The Lions rebounded from a loss to the Chiefs with a convincing win over Tampa Bay before their bye week. The Vikings are 5-8-1 ATS when playing a game on any extended rest under coach Kevin O’Connell. The Lions are 8-0 ATS against Minnesota with QB Jared Goff.  LIONS: 31-17):  https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-mahomes-allen-bills-pro-picks-04999b99a0c8717255f6b194a29ffcc1

CBS Sullivan (Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions:  I'll believe it when I see it with J.J. McCarthy, who is slated to make his return this week for Minnesota. This only comes after Carson Wentz was placed on injured reserve, and I'm not totally convinced Kevin O'Connell is thrilled about putting his young quarterback out there, but he's been painted into a corner. Outside of a fourth-quarter run against the Bears in Week 1, McCarthy has seven quarters of bad football on his short résumé. That includes a Week 2 performance where he couldn't lead the Vikings to double-digit points as he tossed two interceptions and fumbled three times (one lost).  And he's supposed to now come back aboard and go toe-to-toe with a Lions team entering Week 9 on a four-game home winning streak -- each by at least 15 points? Detroit is also averaging 36.7 points per game at Ford Field in 2025. On top of that, the Lions are 4-0 ATS as a favorite this season, and I expect that streak to continue here.  Projected score: Lions 33, Vikings 21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-9-picks-betting-underdogs-best-bets/

PFT’s Week 9 2025 NFL picks: Florio vs. Simms (Vikings at Lions (-8.5).  This one will go very differently than J.J. CBS Dajani (Lions:  This is not a good spot for the Vikings. Not only are they on the road for the second consecutive week, but they are traveling to face the Lions, who are coming off their bye, and have to start J.J. McCarthy at quarterback.  If we are being completely honest, McCarthy hasn't looked like an NFL quarterback for seven of his eight quarters played. Yes, the comeback against the Chicago Bears was fun, but the loss to the Falcons was a disaster. Overall, McCarthy is averaging 152.5 passing yards per game, and has scored three touchdowns compared to four turnovers in his two starts. To make matters worse, this Brian Flores defense has been gashed by opposing quarterbacks over the past couple weeks. Jalen Hurts registered a perfect passer rating against Minnesota a couple weeks ago, and we all saw what Justin Herbert did to them last Thursday night. The Vikings have allowed 32.5 points per game over the last two contests, after allowing just 19.4 points per game in the first five games of the season. I don't have to convince you that the Lions are good. They once again appear to be one of the best teams in the NFC, and are 4-0 ATS when favored this season.   The pick: Lions -8.5.  Projected score: Lions 29-13):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-9-picks-best-bets-lions-destroy-j-j-mccarthys-vikings/

Big Lead Predicting the winner for every game in Week 9 of NFL season (Vikings @ Lions (-8.5)
Jared Goff:  The Vikings are coming off an embarrassing defeat on the Thursday Night Prime Time game at the hands of the Chargers. Not only were they unable to run the ball, but they also had little luck slowing down the Los Angeles running game as Kimani Vidal, Justin Herbert, and company rumbled for over 200 yards and a score on 43 carries. The return of Aaron Jones in the Minnesota backfield did little to enhance a Vikings run game that only totaled 34 yards on the night. Carson Wentz spent the game running for his life and ultimately couldn’t finish the contest with a shoulder injury that will require surgery, ending his season. J.J. McCarthy watched the game from the safety of the sidelines, but there won’t be any place to hide this week as the Vikings travel to Ford Field to take on a Lions team that is coming off of their bye week. Jared Goff and company will look to stay atop the NFC North with yet another home victory to stay undefeated at home this season. These division games are traditionally tight, but the Lions have been on both sides of two two-score games thus far against division rivals, and this week they’ll likely be on the winning side of another one. Look for Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery to both have big games on the ground and for Goff to find his receivers enough to light up the scoreboard in what may be a higher-scoring affair.  Lions 37 – Vikings 27):  https://www.thebiglead.com/nfl-picks-predicting-the-winner-for-every-game-in-week-9/

Vikings-Lions preview: J.J. McCarthy tries to stop losing streak to Detroit in a place he knows well (Prediction - The Vikings have lost five straight to the Lions for the first time since they lost their first five matchups with Detroit as an expansion team. They’re facing a tall task in this one, with McCarthy trying to steady himself against a formidable Lions pass rush and Detroit’s running game creating a mismatch against a Vikings defense that hasn’t stopped the run much this season. To win this one on the road, the Vikings need a solid four quarters from McCarthy for the first time in his career, and a stellar performance from a defense that hasn’t matched its 2024 ability to stop the run and sow chaos with its pressure packages. That’s a lot to ask. Lions 30, Vikings 23):  https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-vikings-detroit-lions-preview-prediction-jj-mccarthy/601504861

Lions vs Vikings: Last-minute thoughts and final score prediction (Final thought and score prediction - Bottom line: A significantly lesser Lions defense beat a significantly better Vikings offense twice last season. With McCarthy making just his third career start and so many injuries still impacting the blocking in front of him, it's tough to see Minnesota outscoring Detroit--even if the Lions' own offense sputters a bit coming out of the bye. And I don't expect that to happen, either.  Lions 33, Vikings 9):  https://lionswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2025/11/02/lions-vikings-week-9-matchup-keys-to-victory-score-prediction/87034092007/
