NFL Week 7 Sunday Standouts: Offense (RB KERRYON JOHNSON, DETROIT LIONS
(Key signature stat: Averaged 4.89 yards after contact per attempt): It’s been a long time since the Lions had a competent rushing attack, but their rookie running back may be giving them just that. Johnson ran for 158 yards on only 19 carries, and explosive runs were what fueled his day. 113 of those 158 rushing yards came on three rushes of 15 or more yards. (Key signature stat: Posted an adjusted completion percentage of 95.0%): For a quarterback that is accustomed to being relied on for all the offensive production of his team, Stafford had a nice reprieve from that on Sunday with the continued emergence of Kerryon Johnson. That is not to say that Stafford did not have an excellent game himself. He was sharp on limited attempts, going 18-for-22 on the day with one of his incompletions coming on a drop and two more on batted passes. NFL Week 7 Sunday Standouts: Defense (DI DA’SHAWN HAND, DETROIT LIONS (Key Stat: Hand generated a 22.2 pressure percentage to lead all qualifiers at his position on Sunday.): The rookie defensive tackle from Alabama entered this week as a top-five-graded pass-rusher, and he proceeded to terrorize the quarterback on Sunday. Hand was constantly putting pressure on Dolphins’ Brock Osweiler and moving him off his spot, totaling eight pressures and one defensive stop. Hand also generated a pressure percentage of 22.2, which edged out only Donald for the highest mark among defensive interiors. Week 7 NFL Team of the Week (QUARTERBACK - Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions – 93.6: Stafford moved his season into the top seven quarterbacks in terms of PFF grade with a big showing against the Dolphins. Jarrad Davis, Detroit Lions – 91.0: This was exactly the performance the Lions were hoping for when they drafted Davis in the first round a year ago as the former Florida Gator flew all over the field. Week 7 winners, losers: Panthers making a push (Winners - Kerryon Johnson: It was just a little less than a month ago that Johnson snapped a 70-game drought for the Detroit Lions without a 100-yard rusher in a single game, but now, Johnson looks like a legitimate workhorse running back. In a 32-21 victory against the Dolphins, Johnson ran the ball 19 times for 158 yards and added two catches for 21 yards. Debrief: Things we know (and things we don't) after Week 7 (Things we know - The Lions have already transformed. Teams change throughout the course of a season, and no team's offense has already morphed more than the Lions'. It's jarring to see a Detroit team rush for 248 yards and score 32 points in a game in which Matthew Stafford only needed to attempt 22 passes. At 3-3, the Lions have already climbed out of the cellar of an NFC North so tight that the Bears fell from first place to last in seven days. I have no idea if Matt Patricia's squad is a playoff team, but they've demonstrated they win playing different styles of offense, depending on the opponent. Separating truth from fiction after Week 7 (7. The Lions finally have their running back. Oh it's a fact. And thus, don't sleep on the Lions. Kerryon Johnson is everything for Matthew Stafford and 3-3 Detroit right now. The rookie absolutely gashed Miami, with 158 yards on 19 carries. So, in Week 3, he was the first Lions back to eclipse 100 yards rushing since NFL Network's Reggie Bush pulled off the feat back in 2013. And on Sunday, he became the first Detroit RB to hit 150 since Jahvid Best in 2011! The Lions are right in the thick of things in this wacky NFC and ultra-competitive NFC North. The Lions impressively ruined Brocktober by snuffing out the Dolphins, 32-21, in Miami. Matthew Stafford notched his fifth game in a row with a QB Rating over 101 since his horrible opener and beat a team with a winning record for the third time in four games. He got ample help from Kerryon Johnson and the reborn Lions run game. The second-round rookie blasted the Dolphins for 158 yards on 19 carries, leading Detroit to 248 rushing yards on 35 carries. Stafford doesn’t have to win games in spite of the rest of his offense anymore and the Lions wear it well.
