Draft Tek (7.  WR Devonta Smith: Whether it be Ja'Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, or DeVonta Smith available at #7 overall, Wide Receiver has been often discussed as the Lions' selection here. There have been some rumblings within the past week or so about the team actually considering taking a QB or to even trade down, but I'll stick to my guns here and go with the rationale that Receiver is one of the team's biggest needs. Considering the value of the players available, Receiver must be Detroit's selection here.  A few factors to consider with Smith and Chase specifically: Chase opted out of the 2020 season which, more power to him considering the pandemic, but some concern is warranted given we haven't seen anything but a Chase-Burrow connection. How would Chase have performed this season with TJ Finley and Max Johnson? Likewise, Smith made a decision to opt out of Pro Day workouts, but in the end, decided to participate as long as he was catching passes with Mac Jones.  Obviously at this stage in the game, as a player, you're trying to do what you can in order to optimize your limelight, but with that does come concerns and discussion points.  Either way, both Chase and Smith are gifted athletes and have produced at high levels in the SEC, both with a National Championship --or 2 if you're Smith. The Lions can't necessarily go wrong with either choice. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst  41.  DE Jayson Oweh:  The one word that always seems to come up about Jayson Oweh? Potential. It's been hammered home that Oweh hadn't even played football until his junior year at Blair Academy, a boarding school in his hometown of New Jersey, and only played 2 full seasons at Penn State. Yet despite that limited experience, Oweh's freak physique is what has scouts and analysts buzzing.  During his Pro Day, Oweh ran a 4.39 forty-yard dash, 19 bench press reps, a 34-inch vertical jump, and a broad jump of 10 feet, 6 inches. Rotoworld Daigle (7. Detroit Lions - OT Penei Sewell, Oregon:  Selecting a quarterback or receiving threat here would be the correct move, so we shouldn't count on the Lions doing that. Walterfootball (7.  WR Ja'Marr Chase:  Matthew Stafford was traded to the Rams, but I don't think the Lions are going after a quarterback with this pick because they're likely to give Jared Goff a try for one year. If so, Detroit will focus on its other big issues, including their receivers. Both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones have signed elsewhere, so two new receivers are needed.  Ja'Marr Chase caught 17 passes in his freshman year, then took a huge step forward in 2019, displaying the ability of a top-10 prospect.  41.  DE Carlos Basham:  The Lions had severe issues stopping the run last year. They also need to improve their pass rush. Focusing on their weak defensive line should be a priority.  Carlos Basham always stuffed the run well, but his pass rush improved tremendously from 2018 to 2019.  72. CB Rodarius Williams: The Lions cut Desmond Trufant, so they'll have to find another cornerback to start across from Jeff Okudah. Rodarius Williams had always been just a steady player at Oklahoma State, but his play improved exponentially in 2020.  101.  DT Tyler Shelvin:  The Lions can use the pick they acquired from the Rams to fix their woeful run defense. DeVonta Smith is an incredibly polished wideout who started his time at Alabama strictly as a deep threat. He has incredible hands and the ability to turn short passes into big plays. Undersized at 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, he plays much larger than his measurements. In all seriousness, if Pitts is off the board (and Pitts isn’t exactly the blocker you’d want, either) the Lions have the chance to provide Jared Goff with a receiver who could develop into one as good as Kenny Golladay, whom Detroit lost via free agency. Walterfootball Charlie (7.  TE Kyle Pitts - Detroit takes the best player available here, grabbing a receiving weapon for Jared Goff. Anthony Lynn could use Pitts at wide receiver similar to Mike Williams with the Chargers and also can play Pitts at tight end in double-tight end sets with T.J. Hockenson.  Team sources say they think Pitts is a top-10 talent due to his dynamic ability as a receiver, and some scouts feel he is the best receiving weapon in the 2021 NFL Draft. Some think he could play wide receiver and be a poor man's Calvin Johnson. Others think Pitts should stay at tight end, where could be a Travis Kelce- or Tony Gonzalez-caliber weapon. The consensus among team evaluators is that Pitts is a far better tight end prospect than T.J. Hockenson, Eric Ebron, O.J. Howard or Evan Engram.  Pitts was incredible in 2020, showing speed on long touchdown receptions, size on jump balls, superior route-running to create separation, good hands, and dangerous yards-after-the-catch skills. He was too fast for linebackers and some defensive backs while being too big for safeties or cornerbacks in coverage. Pitts is matchup nightmare and the most dynamic mismatch receiving weapon in the 2021 NFL Draft, including Ja'Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle. The 6-foot-6, 239-pound Pitts also is known to be a great kid who loves football, works hard, is a good teammate, is a nice guy off the field, and is very intelligent with a tremendous football I.Q. Sources who worked with him at Florida, say he is the nicest guy six days a week, but on game day, he flips the switch and is a fierce competitor.  Pitts totaled 43 receptions for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2020. He turned into play-maker in 2019, creating mismatches in the passing game while recording 54 receptions for 649 yards and five touchdowns.  41.  LB Jabril Cox:  Detroit needs more young linebacker talent badly.  The North Dakota State transfer, Cox (6-4, 231) has a ton of upside and was one of the only bright spots for LSU during the 2020 season. He totaled 58 tackles with one sack, three interceptions and five passes defended on the year.  Cox has good size and speed, and teams see him as a future starter and a player who should continue to improve as he gains experience. Cox was a tremendous pass coverage linebacker in college. For the NFL, he needs to get more physical.  72.  S Richie Grant:  The Lions could use an addition at safety.  Grant (6-0, 194) played well for Central Florida in his collegiate carer, showing good instinct s in coverage and contributing some physicality in run defense. Multiple team sources were impressed with Grant at the Senior Bowl and said he helped himself in Mobile. Teams feel Grant has issues in man coverage, but he is a hard hitter and has good ball skills. They feel he is a sleeper prospect who could be a steal in the 2021 NFL Draft.  Over the past three seasons, Grant was very productive. In 2020, he recorded 72 tackles, three interceptions and five passes defended. Grant jumped out with a massive 2018 season, totaling 108 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and three passes broken up. In 2019, Grant came down to earth with 78 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.  101. RB Demetric Felton:  Detroit doesn't have any long-term receivers, but this is a deep receiver draft, so the organization could take two or three options and start stocking that position with talent.  Felton (5-10, 200) was listed as a wide receiver by the NFL advance scouts, but he was an effective running back for the Bruins in 2020. As a pro, he could do some work as a running back, but he is a good fit as a slot receiver. PFF Monson (7. DETROIT LIONS: OT PENEI SEWELL, OREGON:  Detroit is one of the biggest X-factors in the first round. With a new regime that has plenty of time to work after signing six-year contracts, the Lions are beginning a complete rebuild that doesn’t rule out anything at this spot.  They are a real threat to any team in need of a quarterback, but I don’t think they will aggressively look to trade up for one or make the selection if they don’t love the players that remain at No. 7, which is just Alabama's Mac Jones in this case.  The first pick of a new regime is often about setting a culture, and Penei Sewell represents a potentially generational talent at tackle. He recorded a 91.1 PFF pass-blocking grade as a 19-year-old, allowing just three total pressures on almost 500 pass-blocking snaps before sitting out the 2020 season. CB Asante Samuel:  I will admit that I often struggle when it comes to predicting what the Green Bay Packers do in this spot, as there are a number of different directions you can go. In previous mock drafts I had the Packers address the defensive line  given A: Their needs at the position and B: The relative thinness of this class, and perhaps that is where they go. Green Bay could also look at cornerback, and with Eric Stokes and Asante Samuel Jr. both available, those are options. Like almost every other draft analyst under the sun, I consider wide receiver an option here as well, just like we did last season.  But then I look at a player like Baron Browning and, similar to the discussion of Jeremiah Owus-Koramoah I consider what he can offer to a defense against the modern NFL offenses. Browning is athletic and explosive, and can be used in a number of different roles. He might best be suited as an EDGE, but you can also put him in the slot and use his athleticism in space. He torched Ohio State to the tune of 12 catches for 215 yards and three scores in two quarters in the CFP championship. He’s listed at 6-foot-1 but only 175 pounds. It’s worth noting there have been only two wideouts taller than 6-foot and lighter than 180 pounds drafted since 2000.  Smith did a little bit of everything, dominating defenders in press coverage while getting it done on slants, bubbles or tight-window situations. He dropped five passes on 189 catchable targets over the previous two seasons per PFF. His in-air awareness is impressive, with Smith regularly working magic along the sidelines or back of the end zone. Smith is a playmaker with top-flight athleticism, something the Lions desperately need. Quintez Cephus and Geronimo Allison are the only two Lions receivers under contract, so there’s no time to get overly picky with a potentially elite wideout. He shined in nearly every facet with a 94.8 run-defense grade, 26 pressures on 94 rushes and just six missed tackles on 111 attempts. The only knock is the subpar ball production (four pass breakups in two years), but the combination of power, explosiveness and overall athleticism for a human his size, along with the standout tackling, blitzing prowess and instinctual play, makes him a rare prospect that Brian Flores would covet.  41. S Ar'Darius Washington: Detroit needs more playmakers in its secondary, and that’s precisely what Washington will provide. Look past his 5-foot-8 stature; there isn’t a more instinctual safety in this entire class than him. Washington also possesses elite change-of-direction ability and strength that is almost hard to believe.  Weighing in at under 180 pounds, he can still bench 370 pounds and squat 640 pounds.
