Walterfootball (7.  WR Jaylen Waddle:  The Lions reportedly tried to trade up for Ja'Marr Chase. This isn't a surprise, given that they have nothing at receiver. However, Chase doesn't seem likely to make it to Detroit's pick now, so the Lions will have to settle for either one of the Alabama receivers or Penei Sewell. The latter is the best player available, but is not available in this mock draft. Thus, Detroit could be deciding between Jaylen Waddle and Devonta Smith.  41.  CB Eric Stokes:  The Lions cut Desmond Trufant, so they'll have to find another cornerback to start across from Jeff Okudah.  72. QB Davis Mills: The Lions will give Jared Goff a chance, but they could also be in the market for an answer to the position in Rounds 3-5.  101.  DT Tyler Shelvin:  The Lions can use the pick they acquired from the Rams to fix their woeful run defense. Another lineman makes sense. 112. WR Tylan Wallace:  The Lions must obtain multiple receivers, given their severe weakness at the position.  Tylan Wallace doesn't have great size and speed, but he runs routes very well. Walterfootball Charlie (7.  OT Penei Sewell - Detroit has bigger needs than offensive line help, but new general manager Brad Holmes inherited one of the least talented rosters in the NFL. The Lions could take the best player available and grab Sewell to pair with Taylor Decker. With two excellent tackles to go along some nice blockers on the inside of the line, the Lions could have the makings of perhaps the best offensive line in the NFL.  Sewell (6-6, 325) had a dominant 2019 season as the blind-side protector for Justin Herbert. With his good size, length, quickness and athleticism, Sewell has a nice skill set that could end up making him one of the top choices of the 2021 NFL Draft. For his excellent sophomore season, Sewell won the Outland Trophy and was the Pac-12 co-offensive player of the year. Sewell was a shutdown pass protector as a freshman in 2018, not allowing a sack in over 926 snaps. He only was credited with allowing seven pressures and two hits that season. Having skipped the Pac-12's pandemic-shortened season has not harmed Sewell's draft stock because he had already produced two good seasons of tape for the NFL to examine.  41.  WR Rashod Bateman:  Detroit needs more young wide receiver talent. Here's a long-term wideout to replace Kenny Golladay.  Bateman recorded 36 receptions for 472 yards and two touchdowns in 2020 before opting out of the remainder of the season. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder had opted out prior to the Big Ten canceling and then rescheduling its season, but opted back in for five games before opting out again.  Bateman was part of dynamic tandem with Tyler Johnson in 2019, as Bateman totaled 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns on 60 receptions. With a former NFL wide receivers coach as the head coach of the Gophers, Bateman has solid development in terms of his route running and technique. However, he could have issues with enough speed to separate from NFL cornerbacks, plus he dropped a significant number of passes in 2019.  72.  S Richie Grant:  The Lions could use an addition at safety.  Grant (6-0, 194) played well for Central Florida in his collegiate carer, showing good instinct s in coverage and contributing some physicality in run defense. Multiple team sources were impressed with Grant at the Senior Bowl and said he helped himself in Mobile. Teams feel Grant has issues in man coverage, but he is a hard hitter and has good ball skills. They feel he is a sleeper prospect who could be a steal in the 2021 NFL Draft.  Over the past three seasons, Grant was very productive. In 2020, he recorded 72 tackles, three interceptions and five passes defended. Grant jumped out with a massive 2018 season, totaling 108 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and three passes broken up. In 2019, Grant came down to earth with 78 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.  101.  WR Tamorrian Terry:  Detroit doesn't have any long-term wideouts, but this is a deep receiver draft, so the organization could take two or three options and start stocking that position with talent.  Terry caught 23 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown in 2020 before ending his season early. He had been banged up, but that doesn't entirely excuse the big plays he left on the field due to dropped passes. Terry totaled 60 receptions for 1,188 yards and nine scores in 2019. As redshirt freshman, he made 35 receptions for 744 yards and eight touchdowns.  Entering the 2020 season, team sources were high on Terry's potential with his excellent combination of size and speed. The 6-foot-4, 203-pounder is fast for a big receiver and has athleticism. CBS LaCanfora (15. QB Trey Lance:  In several iterations of this mock I had Chicago getting into this range to get a QB. And the Lions could take someone like Darrisaw in this spot and call it a win. Detroit Lions (5-11) - OT Penei Sewell:  The Lions can't be ruled out for taking a new top rookie quarterback for offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn to develop, despite the trade for Jared Goff. With new GM Brad Holmes, should they not trade down to help address multiple positions on a weak roster, they need to think about the best player available. Taylor Decker is still at left tackle, but he's getting older and Sewell can start and immediately upgrade right tackle with Halapoulivaati Vaitai moving to guard. He's smooth in pass protection and also a long-term rock for the running game.  41. WR Rashod Bateman:  Bateman is a strong big possession type with the qualities of a needed No. 1 as the Lions try to replace Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. He would be a good pairing with Goff now and help a promising young QB later.  72. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown:  The Lions need a strong, tough slot presence after moving on from Danny Amendola and St. Brown can be reliable working off Bateman.  101. Yes, the wide receiver class is exceptionally deep and it represents their biggest need, but this is a complete and total rebuild. At just 19 years old, Sewell had the highest-graded season we've ever seen from a Power Five offensive tackle.  Holmes was part of the Rams organization when they elected to draft Auburn OT Greg Robinson with the second overall pick in 2014, and his measurables/workout metrics bear a striking resemblance to Sewell's.) CBS Wilson (7.  OT Penei Sewell:  If we're the Lions we're taking Justin Fields all day long, but new GM Brad Holmes -- who came from the Rams -- may think that Jared Goff can make it work (related: if Goff couldn't make it work in Sean McVay's system then we don't have high hopes for him in Detroit). If that's the case, the Lions could entertain trade offers -- this feels like the most likely spot to get the most trade-up action from QB-needy teams -- or go about protecting Goff. USA Today Middle-Hurst Schwartz (7. If the Lions stay put, kick-starting their rebuild with a promising pass protector in Sewell would make a lot of sense for a franchise seemingly comfortable taking the long view.) Rotoworld Daigle (7. Detroit Lions - LB Micah Parsons:  A new regime with no history of past decisions and a plethora of needs qualifies Detroit as the Wild Card of the first round. But ask anyone who covers the team and "getting faster on defense" is an antecedent that always crops up. The Lions can do that here by ignoring Parsons' off-field issues and asking him to bite kneecaps across their front-seven, as he did with snaps inside the box (590), at slot corner (72), with his hand in the ground (59), and along the boundary as a hybrid corner/safety (9) in 2019, his final year of tape before opting out.) PFF Colinsworth (15. DETROIT LIONS (VIA NEW ENGLAND): LB MICAH PARSONS, PENN STATE:  Tough pick here. I would have gone either Christian Barmore from Alabama or CB Jaycee Horn from South Carolina, but Parsons will be hyped like crazy as the best player available at this point. The Lions will take the win. BThe upside with Parsons is that he may end up an even better edge player than a linebacker — and he is a good linebacker. He has flashy speed and is almost impossible for backs and tight ends to block when he sets his sights on the quarterback. Penn State uses so many zone-coverage drops that it is hard to evaluate his coverage skills, but a prospect with his level of athleticism should be able to do anything.  He tends to struggle one-on-one against offensive linemen, as his speed can run him past or out of gaps if blocks are made. Touchdown wire Doug Farrar (7. Detroit Lions: WR Devonta Smith:  The Lions could go a couple different ways here — they could select Matthew Stafford’s eventual replacement (I say Stafford’s eventual replacement because Jared Goff is the bridge between franchise quarterbacks), or they could give Goff the receiver help he’ll need to be anything above serviceable. Certainly, the current group of Breshad Perriman, Tyrell Williams, and Quintez Cephus will not do that, and there’s a desperate need for an alpha receiver with Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones gone via free agency.  Smith is an alpha outlier at six feet and 166 pounds, but even a cursory glance at his tape shows a receiver capable of beating the best press cornerbacks in ways most smaller receivers can’t. With his outstanding footwork, route flexibility, second-level acceleration, and catch radius, Smith should be able to have a DeSean Jackson-level impact on his NFL offense. MLive Ben Raven (9. Detroit Lions -- Alabama WR DeVonta Smith (via trade with Broncos):  Full disclosure didn’t want to mock a trade at Pick 7, but with both Mac Jones and Trey Lance still on my board, it would be quite the failure to walk away with neither one of the quarterbacks nor more assets. The deal makes sense for both sides as it’s hard to imagine moving two spots absolutely breaking the bank. This allows the Lions to add more while still getting one of the Big Three receivers.  Yeah, DeVonta Smith weighs 166 pounds, but he plays with a level of fearlessness and toughness that’s hard to describe. Smith is one of those receivers who got it done no matter the situation or quarterback over his last two seasons at Alabama. He’s left SEC cornerbacks in his dust while ripping across the middle of the field. He’s consistently got it done in the most contested of situations while absorbing every once of contact at the point of the catch. He’s a complete wide receiver who’s going to make plays through sheer athleticism as he puts his game together through the early years.  It’s hard to forget his performance in the CFP championship game against Ohio State when he had 12 receptions for 215 yards and three touchdowns in one half of play. It was his third game with more than 200 receiving yards and eighth multi-score game of the season. He did that with Jaylen Waddle missing half of Alabama’s schedule, serving as the clear No. 1 option for the Crimson Tide in a wildly high-volume role. Smith’s ability to go from dragging his toes along the sideline, burning on a straight line or ripping across the middle of the field on crossers makes him an ideal fit for where Detroit’s offense looks where it’s headed for the next couple of years.  Alabama coach Nick Saban and quarterback Mac Jones have praised him for his toughness in the face of questions about his size. Yes, Smith would be one of the lightest receivers in the league on Day 1, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has all the skills needed to thrive after getting it done against the best competition in college football. His game has been compared to that of Marvin Harrison, and while that’s undoubtedly unfair, it feels like the closest attempt. Harrison weighed 181 pounds at the combine before playing most of his career in the 170s. DeSean Jackson, Isaac Bruce and Chad Johnson also played under 180 pounds at times, so let’s not get too carried away. Smith remains 6-feet-1 inches tall and shouldn’t lose any athleticism if he were to add 10 or so pounds to his closely-examined frame.  Smith fits a need while representing incredible value at Pick 9, especially if Brad Holmes can add future picks in the process. One of those quarterbacks is tempting, without question, and if Justin Fields had still been on the board, it would have been too much to pass. Perhaps I’m overthinking the commitment to Jared Goff, the expected timeline and those four first-round picks over the next two years, but I’ve moved away from expecting a Day 1 quarterback to Detroit due to those reasons. Lance is legit and Jones could turn out to be somebody’s franchise quarterback. Draft Tek (7.  WR Devonta Smith: As Draft Day approaches, we are locked into DeVonta Smith as the Lions' selection here at #7. Over the last several weeks, we've covered the many different scenarios that Detroit could be faced with once on the clock, but I am sticking with this pick. For many analysts across the football world, what Detroit "should do", has changed like the wind changes directions. In some stages it was: taking a QB to sit and learn behind Goff, then it was taking the best linebacker available, or to trade back and acquire more picks, and then of course the idea of taking the best-available WR to help provide immediate playmaking for Goff. Ultimately, none of these are necessarily "bad" strategies for Detroit, as each one is rational and would help them both in the long-run and the short-term.  Dan Orlovsky on the other hand, voiced his opinion saying Detroit should not draft a skill position and "go big". The problem being, Detroit's strength is considered the offensive line and the team needs so much help from a playmaking standpoint. If Detroit selects DeVonta Smith here, expect doubters to spew Orlovsky's take as well as Smith's size to hate on the selection. Is Smith's size and frame a concern? Sure; it should be. The NFL is bigger, faster, and stronger than college ball, but I don't think Campbell or Holmes are as concerned about that as many others happen to be. Campbell's mantra of finding guys who are hard-working, have a chip on their shoulder, and who are consistent in their approach, screams DeVonta Smith for me. Not only does Smith have the accolades and the pedigree, he's always been doubted about his size and has consistenly proven doubters wrong. It's almost literally a match made in Heaven when considering the team need, draft position, and player personality. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst  41.  LB Zaven Collins:  Many pro scouts and analysts alike are extremely high on Zaven Collins, and even have him in the discussion to land inside the middle of the 1st Round. If Collins finds himself here to Detroit in RD2, consider this one of the bigger steals of the draft.
