Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon.  Team: Detroit Lions.  Rivals rating: 4 stars, No. 60 overall.  2018 position ranking: No. 5 offensive tackle.  Penei Sewell was the top player from the state of Utah in his recruiting class and ranked as the fifth-best tackle in the country. After sorting through dozens of offers, Sewell whittled his choices down to four: Alabama, Oregon, USC and Utah. Sewell initially planned to make his choice during the fall of his senior year, but Willie Taggart’s decision to leave Oregon for Florida State caused him to reevaluate.  In the end, Sewell signed with Oregon after quickly striking up a relationship with new coach Mario Cristobal. Sewell became Oregon's starting left tackle as a freshman and never vacated that role. Biggest Winners From the First Round of the 2021 NFL Draft (Detroit Lions - Penei Sewell is a beast and, frankly, I can't believe the Cincinnati Bengals passed on him at No. 5. The Lions got him at No. 7 and, judging by their reaction, they were fired up about it. Sewell is a stud at 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds. He dominated college football in the two seasons he played before opting out in 2020. He's a beast and the Lions likely have their franchise tackle secured for the next decade. Given Jared Goff's limited mobility, that should help in both the short and long-term. Sewell is a solid rock the Lions can build the rest of the offense around. NFL.com Reuter ( OT Penei Sewell (No. 7 overall) (Grade - A+) - Analysis: There was no doubt in my mind that the Lions would jump at the chance to draft Sewell. I view him as a future All-Pro who will make new quarterback Jared Goff feel much more at home in Detroit. Offensive linemen that weigh 330 pounds simply aren't supposed to move like Sewell does.  He doesn't have plus length for the position, but you're not getting around this guy very easily. The Lions can play Sewell at either tackle spot. Touchdown Wire 2021 NFL draft: Analysis and grades for all 32 first-round picks (7. OT Penei Sewell, offensive tackle, Oregon.  Analysis: One of the hardest things for me to do in this pre-draft process was deciding who my OT1 was in this class. If I had gone with Northwestern’s Rashawn Slater, it would have been fine, and I think there are things Slater does better than Sewell. But Sewell ultimately rose to the top because I think he’s more technically evolved, and he’s able to do more things because of it. You don’t often describe offensive tackles as “creative,” but I’d use that word in Sewell’s case, because his athletic profile simply allows his team to implement concepts one wouldn’t dare to attempt with a more limited player — and most tackles are more limited than Sewell is already.  Grade: B. I love Sewell as much as any player in this class, but this is a really interesting decision for the Lions, as they are frightfully thin at receiver, and even in a deep class, that could be a problem for Jared Goff. FTW NFL Draft Tracker: Grading every pick in the first round (7.  Detroit Lions: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon - The Lions probably got the best player available, but it’s so damn weird that this team had a top QB prospect sitting there for the taking and didn’t bite. That’s gonna bring the grade down a bit, but Sewell is going to be a star, so I can’t be too harsh. The Oregon product is an athletic freak with good technique and a crazy-high ceiling. 2021 NFL Draft: Ideal Day 2 targets for every NFL team (DETROIT LIONS: WR TERRACE MARSHALL JR., LSU - Widely rumored to be one of the more likely trade-down candidates in the NFL, Detroit opted to stay put at No. 7 overall and add a blue-chip offensive line talent in Penei Sewell. They should have several options to continue adding to the offense toward the top of Round 2, namely at a wide receiver position where they lost their top three targets from last year’s team.  Marshall was mentioned as one of the prospects whose medicals were flagged entering the 2021 NFL Draft, but he’s a first-round talent if healthy. He is one of the most physically gifted receivers in this class with an ideal blend of size and speed to play outside.
