WR Devonta Smith: We've been locked into Wide Receiver for several weeks, and despite the chatter, the Lions need to go elsewhere, such as Quarterback, Linebacker, or even Offensive Line. I just don't see how GM Brad Holmes doesn't give Goff another legitimate weapon in this "retool". We know that Holmes was a big part in Goff being drafted by Los Angeles, but what we don't know was if Goff was a "throw-in" to complete the trade for Stafford, or if Holmes felt he was an integral part of the deal. Either way, Goff's weapons on the active roster include: D'Andre Swift, Jamaal Williams, T.J. Hockenson, Breshad Perriman, and Tyrell Williams. No disrespect, but Detroit needs a little more juice than that. The option of trading back to acquire more picks and focus on rebuilding the defense is very appealing, but because Holmes acquired Goff and has been documented as being a believer in Goff, this indicates (at least to me) that Holmes would do anything to help Goff be a successful QB in Detroit. By selecting Alabama's DeVonta Smith, Detroit could almost avoid offense for the remainder of the draft and focus solely on rebuilding the defense. The stable of running backs is more than competitive, the offensive line is seen as a team strength, and the starting QB and TE spots have been solidified. The only positional group and characteristic that needs to be addressed is playmaking at receiver. Smith is the pick. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst 41. DE Joseph Ossai: When Dan Campbell gave his historic introductory press conference and talked about "biting kneecaps" off, being from the Motor City myself, I got amped up and understood the analogy, to never quit and don't ever give up. These are things that constantly come to mind when watching Texas EDGE rusher Joseph Ossai and the more I watch of him, the more I fall in love with this prospect. Take a look at this play against Oklahoma where he seemed totally out of the play. Where most players would fall back thinking they have nothing to contribute, Ossai kept going, tracked the ball carrier down and forced a fumble. I love it. He also made the same type of high effort play against Oklahoma State causing a sack. Walterfootball Charlie (7. WR Jaylen Waddle - Detroit needs more receiving weapon for Jared Goff. Here is an ultra-fast wideout who can take the top off of a defense and tilt the field. Waddle is very fast and could develop into a dangerous outside or slot receiver. Some team sources think the 5-foot-10, 182-pounder could be a Tyreek Hill-type game breaker in the NFL. Waddle has game-changing speed and the ability to score on any touch of the football. Waddle notched 28 receptions for 591 yards and four touchdowns in 2020 while missing a lot of time with an ankle injury. In 2019, Waddle recorded 33 receptions for 560 yards and six touchdowns. He would have produced more at other schools, but at Alabama, he was rotated with a loaded receiving corps that included the likes of Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs and DeVonta Smith. Waddle recorded 45 receptions for 848 yards and seven touchdowns in 2018. 41. LB Jabril Cox: Detroit needs more young linebacker talent badly. The North Dakota State transfer, Cox (6-4, 231) has a ton of upside and was one of the only bright spots for LSU during the 2020 season. He totaled 58 tackles with one sack, three interceptions and five passes defended on the year. Cox has good size and speed, and teams see him as a future starter and a player who should continue to improve as he gains experience. Cox was a tremendous pass coverage linebacker in college. For the NFL, he needs to get more physical. 72. S Richie Grant: The Lions could use an addition at safety. Grant (6-0, 194) played well for Central Florida in his collegiate carer, showing good instinct s in coverage and contributing some physicality in run defense. Multiple team sources were impressed with Grant at the Senior Bowl and said he helped himself in Mobile. Teams feel Grant has issues in man coverage, but he is a hard hitter and has good ball skills. They feel he is a sleeper prospect who could be a steal in the 2021 NFL Draft. Over the past three seasons, Grant was very productive. In 2020, he recorded 72 tackles, three interceptions and five passes defended. Grant jumped out with a massive 2018 season, totaling 108 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and three passes broken up. In 2019, Grant came down to earth with 78 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. 101. WR Tamorrian Terry: Detroit doesn't have any long-term wideouts, but this is a deep receiver draft, so the organization could take two or three options and start stocking that position with talent. Terry caught 23 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown in 2020 before ending his season early. He had been banged up, but that doesn't entirely excuse the big plays he left on the field due to dropped passes. Terry totaled 60 receptions for 1,188 yards and nine scores in 2019. As redshirt freshman, he made 35 receptions for 744 yards and eight touchdowns. Entering the 2020 season, team sources were high on Terry's potential with his excellent combination of size and speed. The 6-foot-4, 203-pounder is fast for a big receiver and has athleticism. He has the upside and skill set to be a good value pick on the second day of the 2021 NFL Draft. 112. CB Asante Samuel: I will admit that I often struggle when it comes to predicting what the Green Bay Packers do in this spot, as there are a number of different directions you can go. In previous mock drafts I had the Packers address the defensive line given A: Their needs at the position and B: The relative thinness of this class, and perhaps that is where they go. Green Bay could also look at cornerback, and with Eric Stokes and Asante Samuel Jr. both available, those are options. Like almost every other draft analyst under the sun, I consider wide receiver an option here as well, just like we did last season. But then I look at a player like Baron Browning and, similar to the discussion of Jeremiah Owus-Koramoah I consider what he can offer to a defense against the modern NFL offenses. Browning is athletic and explosive, and can be used in a number of different roles. He might best be suited as an EDGE, but you can also put him in the slot and use his athleticism in space. With new defensive coordinator Joe Barry you could also see Browning carving out a role in the middle of the defense when Barry dials up some of his Cover-2/Tampa-2 playcalls, with Browning dropping has that middle-field runner. He torched Ohio State to the tune of 12 catches for 215 yards and three scores in two quarters in the CFP championship. He’s listed at 6-foot-1 but only 175 pounds. It’s worth noting there have been only two wideouts taller than 6-foot and lighter than 180 pounds drafted since 2000. Smith did a little bit of everything, dominating defenders in press coverage while getting it done on slants, bubbles or tight-window situations. He dropped five passes on 189 catchable targets over the previous two seasons per PFF. His in-air awareness is impressive, with Smith regularly working magic along the sidelines or back of the end zone. Smith is a playmaker with top-flight athleticism, something the Lions desperately need.
