NBC Sports Edge (7. Detroit Lions - Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU:  The Lions’ wide receiver situation is horrendous. Tyrell Williams was signed in free agency, which is a fine pick up, but the rest of the group is barren. Chase gives Jared Goff (presumably) the No.1 wide receiver he is going to need. Chase is a bully on short-to-intermediate routes, and has an uncanny ability to separate late in the rep when working vertically. Goff will probably force plenty of 50-50 balls to him, but thankfully Chase is the kind of player who tips the scale to 65-35.) PFF Senior Analysts (7. DETROIT LIONS: WR DEVONTA SMITH, ALABAMA:  The top of the Detroit WR depth chart currently consists of Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams. Need I say more? There may be concerns with Smith's slight 166-pound frame, but he is one of the most complete wide receiver prospects to enter the league in some time. He will be fresh off a Heisman Trophy-winning season that saw him shatter the PFF College record for the highest single-season receiving grade ever earned by a wideout (95.8). He’s going to be a fantastic WR1 for Spencer Rattler in 2022.  41. DETROIT LIONS: WR KADARIUS TONEY, FLORIDA:  Wait, didn’t you draft DeVonta Smith in Round 1? I sure did — the Lions receiving unit is that bad, and Toney is too good to pass up here at 41st overall. He’s not a polished route-runner at all, but he will be one of the most difficult people to tackle from Day 1 in the NFL. Plus, I think we've seen enough flashes from him between the 2020 season and Senior Bowl to believe he will get his route-running chops up to NFL standards. Walterfootball (7.  WR Ja'Marr Chase:  Matthew Stafford was traded to the Rams, but I don't think the Lions are going after a quarterback with this pick because they're likely to give Jared Goff a try for one year. If so, Detroit will focus on its other big issues, including their receivers. Both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones have signed elsewhere, so two new receivers are needed.  Ja'Marr Chase caught 17 passes in his freshman year, then took a huge step forward in 2019, displaying the ability of a top-10 prospect.  41.  LB Joe Tryon:  The Lions had severe issues stopping the run last year. They also need to improve their pass rush. Focusing on their weak defensive line should be a priority.  Joe Tryon came out of nowhere to have a breakout 2019 campaign. He has a nice frame (6-5, 262) and tons of upside to be an impactful edge rusher in the NFL.  72. CB Rodarius Williams: The Lions cut Desmond Trufant, so they'll have to find another cornerback to start across from Jeff Okudah. Rodarius Williams had always been just a steady player at Oklahoma State, but his play improved exponentially in 2020.  101.  DT Tyler Shelvin:  The Lions can use the pick they acquired from the Rams to fix their woeful run defense. Another lineman makes sense. 112. OT Trey Smith:  The Lions need a better right tackle than what they had at the position last year. Help at guard could be obtained as well.  Despite being a freshman, Trey Smith was arguably Tennessee's best player in 2017. Walterfootball Charlie (7.  OT Penei Sewell - Detroit has bigger needs than offensive line help, but new general manager Brad Holmes inherited one of the least talented rosters in the NFL. The Lions could take the best player available and grab Sewell to pair with Taylor Decker. With two excellent tackles to go along some nice blockers on the inside of the line, the Lions could have the makings of perhaps the best offensive line in the NFL.  Sewell (6-6, 325) had a dominant 2019 season as the blind-side protector for Justin Herbert. With his good size, length, quickness and athleticism, Sewell has a nice skill set that could end up making him one of the top choices of the 2021 NFL Draft. For his excellent sophomore season, Sewell won the Outland Trophy and was the Pac-12 co-offensive player of the year. Sewell was a shutdown pass protector as a freshman in 2018, not allowing a sack in over 926 snaps. He only was credited with allowing seven pressures and two hits that season. Having skipped the Pac-12's pandemic-shortened season has not harmed Sewell's draft stock because he had already produced two good seasons of tape for the NFL to examine.  41.  LB Jabril Cox:  Detroit needs more young linebacker talent badly.  The North Dakota State transfer, Cox (6-4, 231) has a ton of upside and was one of the only bright spots for LSU during the 2020 season. He totaled 58 tackles with one sack, three interceptions and five passes defended on the year.  Cox has good size and speed, and teams see him as a future starter and a player who should continue to improve as he gains experience. Cox was a tremendous pass coverage linebacker in college. For the NFL, he needs to get more physical.  72.  S Richie Grant:  The Lions could use an addition at safety.  Grant (6-0, 194) played well for Central Florida in his collegiate carer, showing good instinct s in coverage and contributing some physicality in run defense. Multiple team sources were impressed with Grant at the Senior Bowl and said he helped himself in Mobile. Teams feel Grant has issues in man coverage, but he is a hard hitter and has good ball skills. They feel he is a sleeper prospect who could be a steal in the 2021 NFL Draft.  Over the past three seasons, Grant was very productive. In 2020, he recorded 72 tackles, three interceptions and five passes defended. Grant jumped out with a massive 2018 season, totaling 108 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and three passes broken up. In 2019, Grant came down to earth with 78 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.  101.  WR Tamorrian Terry:  Detroit doesn't have any long-term wideouts, but this is a deep receiver draft, so the organization could take two or three options and start stocking that position with talent.  Terry caught 23 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown in 2020 before ending his season early. He had been banged up, but that doesn't entirely excuse the big plays he left on the field due to dropped passes. Terry totaled 60 receptions for 1,188 yards and nine scores in 2019. As redshirt freshman, he made 35 receptions for 744 yards and eight touchdowns.  Entering the 2020 season, team sources were high on Terry's potential with his excellent combination of size and speed. The 6-foot-4, 203-pounder is fast for a big receiver and has athleticism. Touchdown Wire Schoefield (12.  Detroit Lions: WR Jaylen Waddle:  (Trade terms:  Philadelphia receives: 2021 first-round pick (9 overall).  Detroit receives: 2021 first-round pick (12 overall) and a 2021 third-round pick (70 overall)).  The Detroit Lions finally stand pat and make a selection, and decide to address a glaring need at wide receiver. With both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones having found new homes, the Lions have to make an addition at receiver and they do just that, selecting Alabama’s Jaylen Waddle. His combination of explosiveness and pace makes him a dangerous threat to all levels of the field, and immediately gives that wide receiver room a much-needed injection of talent and big play potential.) Peter King (7. Detroit Lions—Penei Sewell, T, Oregon:  First line out of rookie GM Brad Holmes’ mouth if it falls this way: No way we thought Sewell would be there at seven. Tyler Decker is solid on the left side for Detroit but Tyrell Crosby, PFF’s 66th-rated tackle last year, seems like a place-holder on the right side. No question in my mind Holmes hopes the Patriots (15) will want to pay a ransom to move from 15 to 7 and pick their QB of the future, and the way New England’s uncharacteristic offseason has gone, you can’t eliminate that as a possibility. NFL.com Rhett Lewis (7. QB Trey Lance:  Is one of the Alabama wide receivers a more realistic pick here? Maybe, considering Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones are gone, but the Lions are a real wild card at No. 7. I don’t think there’s a player on the board right now who would be a surprise for a team that has some work to do in building this roster back up. Yes, the Lions have Jared Goff, but it’s his presence for the next couple years that makes this pick of Lance even more plausible. New GM Brad Holmes could choose to ride it out with Goff while continuing to upgrade the roster with four first-round picks over the next two years (one additional first rounder in both 2022 and '23 as part of the trade that sent Matthew Stafford to L.A.) and while Lance readies for his opportunity. Draft Tek (7.  WR Devonta Smith: We've been locked into Wide Receiver for several weeks, and despite the chatter, the Lions need to go elsewhere, such as Quarterback, Linebacker, or even Offensive Line. I just don't see how GM Brad Holmes doesn't give Goff another legitimate weapon in this "retool".  We know that Holmes was a big part in Goff being drafted by Los Angeles, but what we don't know was if Goff was a "throw-in" to complete the trade for Stafford, or if Holmes felt he was an integral part of the deal. Either way, Goff's weapons on the active roster include: D'Andre Swift, Jamaal Williams, T.J. Hockenson, Breshad Perriman, and Tyrell Williams. No disrespect, but Detroit needs a little more juice than that.  The option of trading back to acquire more picks and focus on rebuilding the defense is very appealing, but because Holmes acquired Goff and has been documented as being a believer in Goff, this indicates (at least to me) that Holmes would do anything to help Goff be a successful QB in Detroit. By selecting Alabama's DeVonta Smith, Detroit could almost avoid offense for the remainder of the draft and focus solely on rebuilding the defense. The stable of running backs is more than competitive, the offensive line is seen as a team strength, and the starting QB and TE spots have been solidified. The only positional group and characteristic that needs to be addressed is playmaking at receiver. Smith is the pick. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst  41.  DE Joseph Ossai:  When Dan Campbell gave his historic introductory press conference and talked about "biting kneecaps" off, being from the Motor City myself, I got amped up and understood the analogy, to never quit and don't ever give up. These are things that constantly come to mind when watching Texas EDGE rusher Joseph Ossai and the more I watch of him, the more I fall in love with this prospect.  Take a look at this play against Oklahoma where he seemed totally out of the play. Where most players would fall back thinking they have nothing to contribute, Ossai kept going, tracked the ball carrier down and forced a fumble. I love it. He also made the same type of high effort play against Oklahoma State causing a sack. This year’s draft class is deep at the receiver position, but similar to last year, there’s a trio that stands above the others (Chase, Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith). PFF Palazzolo (7. DETROIT LIONS: WR DEVONTA SMITH, ALABAMA:  With a new regime in Detroit, the Lions can be patient and grab the best players in this draft. In this scenario, they add to a depleted wide receiver corps with the most decorated college wide receiver in recent college football history.  Smith’s 2020 Heisman campaign showed off his entire skill set, as he has fantastic ball skills to go with the seventh-highest YAC per reception numbers among recent NFL prospects dating back to 2014. His 94.9 PFF grade is the best single-season mark from a receiver, and Smith’s only major question mark is how his 170-pound frame will hold up at the next level. So far, there’s little evidence that it will be a factor at the next level.) Detroit Lions – OT Rashawn Slater: Given the state of their rebuild – which is pretty much at square one – and new QB Jared Goff's restructured deal, they're likely out of the QB sweepstakes for now. A receiver certainly makes sense after Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones signed elsewhere. Smith enters the draft after turning in one of the most productive seasons ever for a college receiver. The Heisman winner caught 117 passes for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns. He torched Ohio State to the tune of 12 catches for 215 yards and three scores in two quarters in the CFP championship. He’s listed at 6-foot-1 but only 175 pounds. It’s worth noting there have been only two wideouts taller than 6-foot and lighter than 180 pounds drafted since 2000.  Smith did a little bit of everything, dominating defenders in press coverage while getting it done on slants, bubbles or tight-window situations. He dropped five passes on 189 catchable targets over the previous two seasons per PFF. His in-air awareness is impressive, with Smith regularly working magic along the sidelines or back of the end zone. Smith is a playmaker with top-flight athleticism, something the Lions desperately need.
