2020 NFL Draft: Southeastern Conference (SEC) Scouting Reports (Benito Jones, DT: Career Snapshot: Three-year starter who earned Second Team All-SEC honors and made 30 tackles (10 for loss) with 5.5 sacks as a senior in 2019. Made 34 tackles (nine for loss) with three sacks as a junior. Started four games as a true freshman. Positives: Explosive three-technique tackle who plays with impressive quickness. Fires off the snap, plays with proper pad level and keeps his feet moving. Terrific technician who is agile and quick in all his actions. Easily changes direction, smoothly moves about the field and chases laterally in pursuit of the action. Plays with leverage and holds his ground against blocks. Negatives: Rarely gets penetration or makes plays on the ball. Struggles to get off blocks and gets stood up at the point by a single opponent. Analysis: Jones looked like a potential second day pick after his sophomore season, but his game has leveled off the past two seasons. 2020 Reese’s Senior Bowl Practice Report: South Team (Tuesday - Coatney and Jones were obviously less talented than the rest of this IDL group. They lack the athletic ability to keep up and fell behind the eight ball. Wednesday - Both Coatney and Jones struggled to separate themselves, noticeable difference between their teammates and themselves. Late Day 3 talents. Thursday - Both players continued to fail to stick out, however they both had a rep in 1v1 that showed improvement throughout the week. Analysis - Coatney and Jones both struggled to separate themselves as quality NFL prospects. They weren’t on the same level physically as the rest of the guys here, and it showed. SENIOR BOWL DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (Benito Jones, Ole Miss: Benito Jones is a medieval fort who was plopped into the middle of Ole Miss’ defense. A massive 6-foot-1, 329-pounds, Jones is as rotund as they come and plays with all the strength you would expect him to. Of course, Jones is rather limited in his ability to move across the line of scrimmage, and his pass-rush ability is mostly restricted to pushing the pocket head-on. Plenty of teams will be looking for run stuffers on Day 3, though, and Jones fits the mold perfectly, either as a 1-tech in a standard 4-3 defense or as (a now rare) true 0-tech in a 3-4 defense.
