SN Iyer (Commanders at Lions (-2.5, 49 o/u):  Carson Wentz and Jared Goff always will be connected by the top of the 2016 NFL draft. Wentz sparked his third NFL team to victory with late heroics against the Jaguars, while Goff saw a furious rally get dashed in the fourth quarter against the Eagles. Much like Panthers-Giants, these teams are meant to be even in the standings. NFL RealGM (Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions (-1.5): This is the first time the Lions have been favored in a game since Week 11 of the 2020 season. It’s the first time Detroit is favored against a team with a winning record since Week 7 of the 2018 season. Lions fans are hoping the game comes closer to that one, a road win over the Dolphins, than the more recent one. The Lions got blanked 20-0 by Carolina behind backup QB P.J. CBS Breech (Washington (1-0) at Detroit (0-1):  If you would have asked me last week to rank the best games of Week 2, this one wouldn't have even been in my top 14, which is saying a lot when you consider the fact that there are only 16 games on the schedule. However, I am now oddly intrigued by this matchup after watching Carson Wentz time warp back to 2017 and play like he did during his best season as a pro. If you didn't get to watch Wentz in Week 1 -- and there's a 95 percent chance you didn't because Commanders-Jaguars only gets aired in like 1.3% of the country -- Wentz threw four touchdown passes in a 28-22 win over Jacksonville. Sure, he also threw two interceptions, but instead of melting down after those picks, which is what we've come to expect from him, he bounced back to throw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.  The Commanders actually impressed me in Week 1, which is weird, because I never thought I'd use the words "Impressed" and 'Washington" in the same sentence. The only thing about the Commanders that didn't impress me over the weekend was their geographical knowledge.  If anyone has a geography test coming up at any point in the near future, please keep in mind that Washington state and Washington D.C. have about as much in common as a cell phone and a hamster.  Anyway, no one cares about hamsters, so let's get to my pick for the game. My general rule of thumb when trying to pick the winner in a Lions game is to always pick against the Lions and that's mostly because every time they play, it seems like they fall behind by nine touchdowns before engineering a wild comeback that eventually comes up short. In the end, they lose the game, but cover the spread and no one goes home happy. Players hate the loss, bettors hate that they lost money and Lions fans hate themselves for their continual support of the Lions.  This formula is exactly what happened in Week 1 against the Eagles. The Lions were getting blown out 38-21 late in the game before miraculously scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cover the spread.   I think Iain speaks for everyone. The moral of the story is never bet on the Lions, but also never bet against them, because if you do, there's a 100% chance they'll get a backdoor cover and you'll lose all your money.  Fortunately for bettors, the Lions are favored this week, which means the only way they can cover is if they win the game and I don't think they're going to win the game. I hate predicting a big game from Wentz, but I'm going to do it. SN Bender (Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions (-1.5):  The Commanders are underdogs on the road despite a promising debut from Carson Wentz, who threw four TDs against the Jaguars. The Lions showed fight after digging a huge hole against the Eagles, and this is a must-win game of sorts for Dan Campbell in the early season. CBS Prisco (Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions (-2.5):  The Commanders are coming off a home victory over the Jaguars where Carson Wentz drove them to the game-winning score late. The Lions looked good on offense against the Eagles, but the defense was terrible. This could end up being a shootout. Washington is the better team, and I think that will show up. Fox sports (Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions (1 p.m. ET, FOX) - Overview: The Carson Wentz roller coaster was going at full speed in Week 1 (4 touchdowns, 2 interceptions), but there was far more good than bad for the Commanders. They seem loaded with offensive weapons, with a healthy Curtis Samuel (8-55-1) and rookie Jahan Dotson (3-40-2) added to a group that includes WR Terry McLaurin, TE Logan Thomas and RB Antonio Gibson.  The Lions' pass rush was erratic against the Eagles last week, but Philly has one of the best offensive lines in football. Washington doesn't. If Detroit can't get to Wentz, he could be set up for another big day. And that's a problem because other than RB D’Andre Swift (15 carries, 144 yards, 1 TD), the Lions' offense didn't click in Week 1, even though the Eagles' defense wasn't good at all.  Matchup to watch: Lions CB Jeff Okudah vs. Commanders WR Terry McLaurin.  Last week the Lions primarily used Okudah on Eagles WR DeVonta Smith, who had zero catches. Of course, that allowed A.J. Brown to go off for 10 catches and 155 yards. Presumably, given how well Okudah played Smith, the Lions will put the former first-rounder on McLaurin in this game since he's still Washington’s best receiver. But Okudah had better get help, because Samuel and Dotson proved to be dangerous, too.  Key stat: Wentz threw four passing TDs last week for the first time since 2017. That helped him overcome his two interceptions, but the whole performance (27-for-41, 313 yards) was good for Wentz and Washington. The Commanders are banking everything on him this season, and he certainly has plenty of weapons around him. They needed him to get off to a hot start.  Prediction: The Lions are favored for the first time in nearly two years, fresh off their stronger-than-expected showing against the Eagles. But that game was close because of a terrible tackling performance by the Eagles defense. If the Commanders follow suit, then sure, Swift could carry the Lions to victory. But this Washington team is a lot like the Eagles, in that it has a diverse offense and a strong (for now) quarterback. The Lions’ defense is too inconsistent and their offense is too one-dimensional for them to do more than keep games close for now. Week 2 NFL game picks: Chiefs stave off Chargers; Buccaneers edge past Saints (Washington Commanders win 30-27:  Antonio Gibson is running hard as hell again. Terry McLaurin suddenly has two running partners with a lot of talent. Commanders offensive coordinator Scott Turner was in his bag last week, with the versatility of Gibson and receiver Curtis Samuel making pre-snap life tricky for the opposition. Detroit will not quit and will keep trying to score until the whistle blows. Washington looks better than most people thought. CBS Dajani (Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions:  It has finally happened. For the first time in 24 games, the Lions are favored. Do they deserve it though? Detroit lost to Philly in Week 1 by three points, as a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter allowed the Lions to cover the spread. D'Andre Swift looked incredible, as he racked up 175 yards from scrimmage, but the defense struggled to contain Jalen Hurts and Co.   This Washington offense looked refreshed in Week 1. The Jacksonville Jaguars don't have an elite defense, but I mean, Carson Wentz has weapons to work with. Antonio Gibson racked up 130 yards from scrimmage, Terry McLaurin caught a touchdown, Curtis Samuel caught a touchdown and then the rookie wideout Jahan Dotson caught two touchdowns in his NFL debut. The Lions struggled to contain A.J. Brown last week, who caught 10 passes for 155 yards. How will this unit handle multiple wide receivers who can make an impact on offense?
