10 rookies set to make the biggest impact during the 2022 NFL season: Dameon Pierce, Chris Olave and more (EDGE AIDAN HUTCHINSON, DETROIT LIONS:  The Detroit Lions recorded the third-fewest sacks in the NFL last season (30), and they had just two players record five or more sacks (Charles Harris, Julian Okwara). This team desperately needed a dominant edge rusher, and it got one with the No. 2 overall pick in Aidan Hutchinson.  Hutchinson will be a Week 1 starter for the Lions and is expected to play around 75% of the defensive snaps. He's one of the more polished pass-rushers to enter the NFL in a while, as he posted a 25.4% pass-rush win rate during his final year at Michigan. In addition, he is an above-average run defender, which should allow him to stay on the field a ton as a rookie.  If the Lions want to compete for a playoff spot this year, they'll need to improve their pass rush drastically. Agent's Take: 11 QBs with something to prove in 2022 (Jared Goff:  A Rams trade for Matthew Stafford that brought Goff to the Lions paid immediate dividends in Los Angeles. The Rams won the Super Bowl last season, which is something that wasn't done during Goff's five seasons with the team.  Goff got off to a rocky start in Detroit but played his best football down the stretch as the Lions' only three wins last season came in the four games he played in December and January. He completed 66.9% of his passes (91 of 136) for 965 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions to post a 103.3 passer rating during those games. Goff may need to pick up where he left off last season to remain in Detroit long term since there isn't any more guaranteed money in his contract after this year. The biggest question for every NFL team in the 2022 season (Detroit Lions: How far can you go with Jared Goff? (Detroit Lions - In their efforts to “Restore the Roar” after missing the playoffs every year since 2016, the Lions are investing in highly quotable butt-kicking head coach Dan Campbell, his array of former players as assistant coaches, a surprisingly good offensive line, a defense that is coming back together after former head coach Matt Patricia picked it apart, and the efforts of quarterback Jared Goff.  The last item there comes with a severe qualifier we all know. Goff, both with the Lions and in his time with the Rams, has been a scheme-dependent quarterback with a low ceiling, and he must adhere to the playbook, or things tend to veer out of control. The things that made him a plus-level quarterback under Sean McVay, like play-action and pre-snap motion? He’s regressed with them (and with most everything else) over the last few seasons. In 2021, he completed 67.2% of his passes for 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.  Not to say that Goff is hopeless — occasionally, he’ll uncork one like this banger of a throw to receiver Josh Reynolds in Week 15. Touch, timing, velocity — this 39-yard touchdown pass has it all.  But there are still too many times when Goff anticipates safety movement, guesses wrong, and gives gifts to the opponent. Here’s one such example against the Broncos in Week 14.  When the Lions got Goff in the Matthew Stafford trade, they also inherited Goff’s over-inflated contract. 2023 marks the first year of that contract which allows the team to release Goff with a negligible financial penalty.
