Best and worst of NFL Week 6: Dolphins roll (again), Eagles and Niners finally fall (Lions - Can the Lions continue to get WR Jameson Williams involved? Williams caught a 45-yard dime from QB Jared Goff on his fifth career reception in the third quarter. After serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's gambling policy, Williams displayed his ability to be a deep threat in his second game back. Williams can certainly stretch the field and generate yards after the catch with his blazing speed and playmaking, but the Lions will continue to ease him into things slowly. Despite the expectations that come with being the No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 draft, the Lions aren't putting a ton of pressure on Williams at this stage.  Stock up after the win: WR Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Pro Bowl receiver was held out last week with an abdominal injury but returned with 12 receptions for 124 yards and a second-quarter touchdown -- including a season-high 50 yards after the catch.  Stock down after the win: Ground attack. Veteran RB David Montgomery was ruled out after injuring his ribs in the first half, and No. 12 overall pick Jahmyr Gibbs missed his second straight game with a hamstring injury, which really hurt a group that posted a season-low 40 rushing yards. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38634218/nfl-week-6-2023-questions-risers-fallers-takeaways-lessons-stats

NFL Week 6 Game Recap: Detroit Lions 20, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6:  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-6-game-recap-detroit-lions-20-tampa-bay-buccaneers-6

What We Learned: Takeaways from each Sun. game  (Lions at Bucs - 1.  Lions gut out win despite David Montgomery injury. With Jahmyr Gibbs missing his second straight game, Montgomery was on the short list of players the Lions could least afford to lose to injury. But Montgomery suffered a ribs injury midway through the second quarter and didn’t return, turning the run game over to Craig Reynolds and Devine Ozigbo. Detroit totaled only 40 rush yards and was bailed out by Jared Goff’s strong game (against a tough secondary) and a stout defense. Reynolds posted 15 yards on 10 carries but contributed in other ways. His big block helped spring Amon-Ra St. Brown’s TD, and Reynolds ripped off 28 yards on a third-and-4 tunnel screen in the third quarter. The Lions will be hoping that Montgomery and/or Gibbs will be available at Baltimore next week, but if not, it’s at the point where I expect the Lions to fix their issues well on the fly. They’ve topped the 350-yard mark in every game so far and didn’t turn it over against a Bucs D that was averaging 2.5 takeaways per game.  2.  Bucs drop to 1-2 at home, as offense hits the skids. The Buccaneers drove into Detroit territory three times on Sunday. The first two drives ended in made field goals. The last one was a turnover on downs, putting a lid on another frustrating game offensively at Raymond James Stadium. Tampa Bay gained only 251 yards, with 69 of those coming on the final possession. Baker Mayfield had a tough day at the office, throwing a deflected-pass pick inside his own 10-yard line five minutes into the game. Mayfield was under duress a fair bit, and he suffered a contusion on his left (non-throwing) hand, head coach Todd Bowles said after the game. He missed on a few deep shots (and throws outside the numbers) that should have been big plays. Twice he overthrew rookie Trey Palmer for six points -- once before halftime and once in the fourth quarter. Mike Evans also dropped a third-and-12 pass that hit him in the hands.   3.  Lions’ defense sends a message: This unit is for real. For the fourth time this season, Detroit’s defense held its opponent to 20 points or fewer, and three of those games have come on the road. That’s the formula for victory for a team that has scored 20 or more in every game. The Lions had only one sack on Sunday, but they still found sources of pressure. They covered (Cameron Sutton especially) and tackled well, which are sometimes-overlooked elements of what makes a defense great. But DC Aaron Glenn knows that, and it’s showing up on game days. The Bucs didn’t gain more than 43 yards on a drive until Detroit was in prevent mode late. This Lions’ defense has taken a few hits with injuries, but outside of the Seattle game in Week 2, it has been markedly improved over the group we saw last season.  Next Gen stat of the game: Buccaneers rookie DT Calijah Kancey generated six pressures on 28 pass rushes in his second career game, tied for the most pressures by a rookie defensive tackle in a game over the past five seasons. Kancey averaged a 2.37-second time to pressure against the Lions.  NFL Research: The Lions extended their NFL-best streak and franchise record-long streak by producing 20 or more points for the 15th straight game. With the 49ers’ streak of scoring 20-plus ending on Sunday, the second-longest current streak belongs to the Chargers, who enter Monday Night Football with seven straight games of 20 or more.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-season-week-6-what-we-learned-from-sunday-s-games

Lions vs. Buccaneers score, takeaways: Jared Goff, Detroit defense shine in cruise-control road victory:  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/lions-vs-buccaneers-score-takeaways-jared-goff-detroit-defense-shine-in-cruise-control-road-victory/live/

Sorting Sunday Pile, Week 6: Bengals back in business (Detroit Rock City - Heading out on the road as a three-point favorite with the hype train building is a dangerous spot, but the Detroit Lions didn't flinch once on its business trip to Tampa Bay. The Lions didn't come alone either, with Jeff Darlington of ESPN capturing a HUGE crowd of Lions fans celebrating the win in the stands "well after the game ended" and getting a boss quote from Jared Goff. The Lions being good is great for the league and really great for their fans and guess what: The Lions are GOOD. I've written about them in here previously but after a letdown blip at home in Week 2 against Seattle, the Lions have been dominating inferior opponents.   David Montgomery out and the Bucs bottling up the run? No problem, Jared Goff will just uncork to his weapons in the passing game. Amon-Ra St. Brown returned from injury and racked up 12 catches for a 124 yards and a score. Second-year burner Jameson Williams was supposed to be finishing his gambling suspension this week and instead he was torching the Bucs deep for a long touchdown that gave Detroit a double-digit lead and put this game away.  We'll see what happens if the Lions have to play a high-octane offense, but this is a vastly improved defense from last year and the Lions look like a complete team. They belong in the same club as the Niners and Eagles, even if no one wants to admit it just yet.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-sorting-the-sunday-pile-week-6-joe-burrow-led-bengals-fully-back-no-more-undefeated-teams-remain/

Lions take lead but David Montgomery suffers rib injury:  https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/lions-take-lead-but-david-montgomery-suffers-rib-injury

NFL Week 6 Winners and Losers: Jets Pull Off Massive Victory, Eagles and 49ers Undefeated No More, and the AFC North is Here to stay (Winner | Detroit Lions - On Sunday, the Lions did exactly what good teams are supposed to do — beat an inferior opponent by two scores, even on the road.  Jared Goff kept rolling against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6, completing 30 of 44 attempts for 353 yards and two touchdowns in Detroit’s 20-6 win. The Lions moved to 5-1 even with running back David Montgomery (shoulder) unavailable for most of the game. But Detroit’s defense was the club’s most impressive unit today, constantly harassing Baker Mayfield while keeping the Bucs out of the end zone. Lions DC Aaron Glenn should be on the shortlist for every NFL team searching for a new head coach this offseason.  Detroit was the NFC North favorite heading into the season. But few thought the Lions would hold a 2.5-game lead through six weeks.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-week-6-winners-and-losers-jets-pull-off-massive-victory-eagles-and-49ers-undefeated-no-more-and-the-afc-north-is-here-to-stay/

Grades:

CBS (Lions Grade:  A-.  Despite Detroit being down both of its top two running backs in David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, quarterback Jared Goff was mostly unfazed, throwing for 353 yards and two passing touchdowns on 30 of 44 passing. He was precise on his short and intermediate throws, and his 45-yard deep shot touchdown strike to Jameson Williams was exactly what the Lions needed to put the game away. Defensively, they held the Buccaneers to 2-for-12 on third down despite Baker Mayfield entering Week 6 as the NFL's most efficient third-down passer. It felt like Detroit could have had more than 20 points, but that's nit-picking. The Lions look strong as they're off to a 5-1 start, tying their best six-game opening to a season in the Super Bowl era.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-6-grades-browns-earn-an-a-for-shocking-victory-over-49ers-lions-get-an-a-for-beating-bucs/
