Grading all 31 first-round picks after Week 4 of the 2023 NFL season (PICK NO. 12: DETROIT LIONS: RB JAHMYR GIBBS - Overall Rookie Grade: 62.1 (Rank: 7/9). Principal Opponent: Quay Walker. Week 4 Snaps: 28. Week 4 Grade: 59.5. With a big lead in hand, the Lions leaned heavily on David Montgomery on Thursday Night Football. Jahmyr Gibbs produced a season-low 51 total yards on 12 touches. Montgomery will continue to get most of the work between the tackles and in the red zone, so Gibbs' production may be tied to the flow of each game. PICK NO. 18: DETROIT LIONS: LB JACK CAMPBELL - Overall Rookie Grade: 53.1 (Rank: 3/4). Principal Opponent: Zach Tom. Week 4 Snaps: 35. Week 4 Grade: 46.9. For the second week in a row, the Lions deployed Campbell as an edge player primarily. He finished the game with a team-low 46.9 defensive grade and seems to be struggling to adapt to the new hybrid role. Campbell was lauded for his coverage skills at Iowa, but his 45.6 coverage grade is the third worst among qualified linebackers.): https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-grading-all-first-round-picks-week-4-2023-nfl-season
2023 NFL First-Quarter All-Pro Team: Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Carter and more (TE: SAM LAPORTA, DETROIT LIONS - The rookie leads all tight ends with 242 receiving yards through Week 4 and is the only tight end in the league to average more than 2.00 yards per route run (2.30) across 20-plus targets. He is also tied for the league lead at all positions with six contested catches. C: FRANK RAGNOW, DETROIT LIONS - Ragnow owns the second-best PFF run-blocking grade among centers this season (84.8). He has allowed four pressures from 145 pass-blocking snaps, although they all came in one rough outing in pass protection against the Atlanta Falcons.): https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2023-first-quarter-all-pro-team-tua-tagovailoa-jalen-carter
One thing we learned from each team in Week 4 (Detroit Lions - David Montgomery makes this team elite: Montgomery has been a battering ram for the Lions in the three games he's played in Detroit, showcasing what he brings to the offense in Thursday's blowout win over the Packers. He rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries -- giving him 69 though three games. When Montgomery plays, the Lions average 395.7 yards per game. They can score without Montgomery on the field, but Detroit is more complete on offense when he's healthy. Montgomery's presence is why Detroit is the best team in the NFC North.): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/one-thing-we-learned-about-each-team-after-week-4-bengals-bears-have-bigger-issues-than-struggling-qbs/
NFL Defense Rankings: Cowboys, Seahawks, and Ravens Surge in Week 5 (11. Detroit Lions: These Detroit Lions are not your normal Detroit Lions. Although they were gifted mistakes against the Chiefs, the unit put on a strong showing against Kansas City. Although the Seahawks’ offense moved the ball consistently against them, that could be a trend for that particular offense moving forward if the past two weeks are any indication. Detroit’s pass rush is dominant, and it should only improve as Julian Okwara returns to action from Injured Reserve. The Lions rank eighth in defensive EPA and 10th in success rate, despite facing two very good offenses.): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-defense-rankings/
