The First Read: Biggest challenge facing each division leader at quarter mark of 2023 NFL season (Detroit Lions - NFC North · 3-1.  Will Jameson Williams be a difference-maker? The Lions have been waiting for their 2022 first-round pick to break out, and now would be a terrific time. Williams only played in six games as a rookie because he was still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in college. He hasn’t played in the first four games of this season because of a suspension for gambling. The hope in Detroit is that his electric speed becomes the final element in a Lions offense that already is potent. The Lions have a star receiver in Amon-Ra St. Brown, a blossoming talent in rookie tight end Sam LaPorta and a strong running game. If Williams can take the top off opposing defenses, they’re likely to run away with this division. NFL Week 4 Rookie Rankings: C.J. Stroud Shines, Puka Nacua Walks It Off (3. Sam LaPorta, TE, Detroit Lions:  Sam LaPorta finished third in last week’s rankings, and he’ll keep that spot this week. The second-rounder continues his historic pace and has become a key cog in the Lions’ offense.  LaPorta has been a reliable target for Jared Goff in must-have situations. He now leads all NFL tight ends in receiving yards this season.  5. Brian Branch, DB, Detroit Lions:  Brian Branch has become a pivotal force for the Lions’ resurgent defense. The Lions align him all over the field, playing a variety of roles in coverage and run defense. Branch led the Lions in tackles and forced a pass breakup in coverage in their Thursday Night win over the Packers.  Branch has thus far fit right into the NFL, looking like a seasoned pro after falling to the second round.
