4 Players Lions Should Target in Third Round (WR Sage Surratt, Wake Forest:  If the Lions end up going wide receiver with one of their two third-round selections, they'd be wise to target Surratt.  The 6-foot-2.5, 215-pound pass-catcher emerged on to the scene in a big way in 2019, recording 65 catches for 1,006 yards and 11 touchdowns in nine games. He opted out of playing in 2020 due to concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic, but remains one of the 2021 draft class's top wideouts as a result of his high-end ball skills.  With the obvious need that Detroit has at receiver, after the offseason departures of Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr. and Jamal Agnew, Surratt would be a more-than-worthwhile selection in this round.) 2021 NFL Draft Rankings: WR 10-50 (16. Sage Surratt, Wake Forest | 6'2/220
(Comp: Michael Floyd):  The 2019 Wake Forest offense went from scary to bad the second Sage Surratt was knocked out for the season in 2019. That’s probably the most compelling argument to be made for his value as a player. Especially since that’s the last time we saw him -- he opted out in 2020.  The brother of UNC LB Chazz Surratt, also in this draft class, Sage is an elite deep-ball receiver who turns 50-50 balls into wins for the offense. Surratt went an incredible 18-for-30 in contested situations in 2019. He tracks the ball like a hunting dog downfield, and he’s a bridesmaid-going-for-a-bouquet specialist at high-pointing in traffic, a hands catcher with a bloated catch radius.  But like J-JAW, a jump-ball specialist in college, Surratt lacks athleticism. He builds up to top speed, and he’s sluggish changing directions, which neuters his ability in the intermediate game. Unfortunate, that, because Surratt would otherwise profile as strong in that area as a guy with a big frame, big catch radius, and proven after-the-catch ruggedness. Surratt’s tape shows a a hellacious runner after the catch (17 broken tackles in 2019).  If nothing else, Surratt will be a solid depth piece. But he offers the potential of a strong WR2 if he can ever figure out how to mitigate his lack of foot quickness and agility to provide more in the intermediate area. Such gains to his game would only make him more dangerous deep, the special-sauce of his game, as opponents couldn’t sit back dead-red on the nine-route, knowing Surratt could steal first downs in kind.) Hot Take Tuesday - Senior Bowl Edition: Is Quinin Meinerz a Top-50 prospect in the NFL Draft? (Big Time Seniors from the summer are overrated:  Trey Smith, Alex Leatherwood, Patrick Jones, Sage Surratt, all disappointed in Mobile. These big-time players, who were mocked high coming into the season, were dominated by lesser-known players. Despite being thought of as potential round one guys, they are now fighting to keep themselves in the top 100.  Every year we have a handful of these players. High expectations coming into the season, top National Scouting grades, followed by a less than stellar senior season, which is magnified by poor Senior Bowl performances. We just haven't seen him in a while, and many will be wondering if he took advantage of time away from the field to get quicker and learn more subtle ways to create separation. Senior Bowl Practice Review: Day 2 National DBs, WRs, TEs (One of the more polarizing receivers in the Senior Bowl, SAGE SURRATT from Wake Forest, showed some steady improvement. Surratt has impressive size and a basketball player, jump-ball skill set but had been refusing to use his hands to separate in reps. Halfway through the one-on-ones Surratt suddenly began using his hands to find separation—as if he had just been coached up on it—and it worked! 2021 Senior Bowl Practice Report: National Team (Tuesday - Had a few nice plays, but also showed some mental lapses. His frame his very clearly a huge asset. He could be a Chase Claypool-type player in the right system, while also being a go-to red zone target.  Wednesday - Surratt limped off the field with an ankle injury, but he did come back to resume practice. He made a few catches throughout drills but nothing remarkable. Surratt, the second biggest receiver on the National Team, had an unimpressive day and seemingly refused to use his hands to help him separate on routes.) 2021 NFL Draft: Midseason wide receiver rankings (10. SAGE SURRATT, WAKE FOREST (RS JUNIOR):  You won’t find a better contested-catch receiver in the draft class. Surratt and his brother — North Carolina quarterback-turned-linebacker Chazz — are two of the most physical players at their positions in the country. He hauled in 18 of 30 contested catches last season for the Demon Deacons.  Surratt beat up college cornerbacks in 2019 at the catch point, along his routes and after the catch before opting out this season. He broke 17 tackles on 65 catches in nine games last year. While we believe separation is king, and Surratt is never going to be terribly dynamic in that regard, he has the goods pretty much everywhere else to make up for it.) College Football Games Today: Week 2 Live Blog with Tony Pauline (Scouts disappointed in Sage Surratt’s decision  (7:05 pm ET):  When Clemson meets Wake Forest this evening, one player that won’t take the field is Demon Deacon receiver Sage Surratt.  Back on August 18, the lanky wideout announced on twitter he was opting out of the upcoming season in order to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft.  To date, I’ve yet to talk to anyone in the scouting community who believes this is a wise decision- quite the contrary.  Surratt had his monster season cut four games short last year after suffering a shoulder injury.  He’s a big-bodied pass catcher who wins out for the contested pass but lacks any semblance of quickness or speed in his game.  Scouts felt Surratt needed to return to the field this year to prove he was healthy, prove he could be productive with a new quarterback after Jamie Newman transferred to Georgia, and show he had improved his route running.  None of that’s going to happen, and it’s much more critical than Surratt running a fast forty-time next February.  During our podcast last week, I spoke at length about players who, according to scouts, were making a mistake by opting out of the season in favor of a few extra months of combine training. 2021 NFL Draft: Preseason wide receiver rankings (10. SAGE SURRATT, WAKE FOREST:  Surratt burst onto the scene in 2020 as one of the most consistent receivers in college football. He racked up over 1,000 yards in nine games before a shoulder injury ended his season. Surratt is an ultra-physical route-runner at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds who also bullies defenders after the catch (17 broken tackles on 65 catches). He’s got prototypical possession receiver traits.  Surratt lacks wheels, though. He’s firmly a 4.6-plus type of wideout. It's encouraging that his lack of speed didn’t stop him from being productive downfield, where he hauled in 12 deep passes for 470 yards. We usually prefer separators when projecting to the NFL, but Surratt plays such a physical brand at the receiver position that he looks like he’ll be able to keep getting the job done at the next level.  2020 Outlook:  After only 581 yards as a redshirt freshman, Surratt qualifies as a bit of a one-year wonder. Combine that with his shoulder injury, and it’s not hard to see why he came back to school. It’s going to be difficult for him to replicate those numbers without quarterback Jamie Newman throwing him the ball, and his biggest weakness — speed — won't improve overnight.)
