Most improved secondaries following free agency and the 2021 NFL Draft (5. DETROIT LIONS:  The Lions’ secondary had some of the most room to improve of any group in the league following a 2020 season in which the group allowed a 114.9 passer rating (second-highest in the NFL, behind only the Houston Texans). Detroit didn’t make many splashy moves in the secondary, but the team added several solid players.  In free agency, Detroit signed Quinton Dunbar and Corn Elder. Dunbar disappointed with the Seattle Seahawks last season — a year that was derailed by injury and off-the-field questions — but he’s just one year removed from an excellent season in Washington. Dunbar was the second-highest-graded cornerback in the NFL in 2019 (87.6). It’s unrealistic for Detroit to expect that kind of performance next season, but he was certainly worth a one-year, $1 million flier as the No. 60 overall player in PFF’s free agent rankings entering the offseason.  Elder isn’t all that exciting of an addition, but he did provide solid play for the Carolina Panthers in the slot last year, earning a 68.5 overall grade on over 400 snaps. He figures to replace the combination of Justin Coleman and Darryl Roberts at that spot for the Lions in 2021.  Detroit then went out and spent its first non-offensive or defensive line pick on Syracuse cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The Lions landed Melifonwu — the 70th-ranked player on PFF’s Big Board — with the 101st overall selection. While Sewell will have to adapt to playing on the right side and kick off the rust after opting out of last season, Lions coach Dan Campbell has already described the 2019 Outland Trophy winner as a "cornerstone player."   Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, Lions – (No. 112 pick, fourth round):  Detroit have the most dire outlook at receiver of any NFL team, with castoffs Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams leading the way. Even in a run-heavy offense, Jared Goff is going to need some help. 2021 NFL Draft Winners and Losers: Day 1 (Detroit Lions: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon  - Because the first three picks of the 2021 NFL Draft were spent on quarterbackse, a number of excellent prospects were pushed down the board. Detroit benefited greatly from those players falling, as the organizationwas able to select Sewell with the seventh-overall pick. The Lions had a hole at right tackle, and they managed to land a potentially elite player to fill it.  Sewell (6-6, 320) is a monster who gets physical in the ground game while showing excellent speed and athleticism to cut off the edge. New general manager Brad Holmes was wise to not reach at a bigger position of need, and Sewell could give the Lions one of the best offensive lines in the league with left tackle Taylor Decker, center Frank Ragnow and guard Jonah Jackson. Winners and Losers - Day 2 (Detroit Lions - New general manager Brad Holmes has laid a great foundation in his first offseason for the Lions. Along with landing extra first-round picks in the 2022 and 2023 NFL Drafts, Holmes had a superb opening draft that was boosted by the three picks the Lions made on Friday night. Washington defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike was highly regarded by teams across the league. He is quick off the snap with an ability to disrupt in the backfield. In the third round, the Lions added another high-upside strong disruptor at tackle with N.C. State's Alim McNeil. That means Detroit can field McNeil, Onwuzurike and Michael Brockers at defensive tackle. Late in the third round, the Lions added another scheme fit with Syracuse corner Ifeatu Melifonwu. He gives Detroit another press-man corner with size and speed. Melifonwu has a good skill set, and new defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn can work with Melifonwu's stiffness limitations to help him deliver on his upside.
