8 catches, 98 yards, three touchdowns:  If you've heard of Adams as an intriguing Day 3 prospect, it's likely you've seen some highlights from the Randy Moss impersonation he put on in Manhattan, Kansas this past fall.  Early in the game, he adjusted magnificently to an underthrown deep ball and elevated to make the snag. He ended that job in style, with a box-out touchdown on an end-zone fade. That drive was foreshadowing. In the fourth, with the game tied, Adams slowed his momentum and found the football in tight coverage on a back-shoulder catch to move the chains.  Then on the same side of the same end zone of his first score, Adams got even more contact from a defender but somehow came down with another fade for a touchdown. With his team down three with under a minute to go, Adams ran a post from the outside and made the catch a split second before the over-the-top defender tried to knock the football away. Oklahoma and Arkansas State Pro Days (Arkansas State Pro Day:  The Arkansas State Pro Day took place on campus today, and the focus was squarely on two NFL prospects.  Receiver Jonathan Adams Jr., presently graded as a potential sixth-round pick on our board, measured 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds. He touched 39 inches in the vertical jump, 11’5″ in the broad jump, and was timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40. Adams recently jumped as high as 41 inches during training.  The big-bodied receiver is coming off a career season in which he posted 79 receptions for 1,111 yards and 12 TDs. 2021 NFL DRAFT WIDE RECEIVER DEEP SLEEPERS (Jonathan Adams Jr, Arkansas State:  An all-state basketball star from Jonesboro, Arkansas, Adams is another middling two-star prospect who grinded his way into NFL Draft consideration. He saw the field right out of the gate as a true freshman in 2017, playing in 11 games while catching eight passes for 77 yards and a touchdown in a reserve role.  He continued to push for playing time in 2018, grabbing 17-of-37 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, but struggled with four drops in 21 catch opportunities. You simply cannot drop almost 20% of targets and expect to stick around at The Shield level.  He seized the starting Z-WR position opposite All-American Omar Bayless in ASU’s high-flying offense, securing 62-of-101 targets for a 61.4% catch rate, 851 yards, 13.7 YPC and five touchdowns in his breakout season. He pared down his drops, putting only four balls on the ground in 66 catch opportunities while forcing nine missed tackles. However inconsistency led to a middling PFF receiving grade of 65.8. In 2020, with Bayless moving on, Adams finally got the opportunity to be the WR1 and excelled in the primary role. His 78 receptions in 121 targets, 65% catch rate, 1,106 yards and 12 touchdowns were the culmination of years of hard work for the hulking wideout. He led the nation in contested catches with 23. For perspective, the next highest contested catch total in the country was 11. Meaning he literally doubled the next closest receiver in that metric. He improved his production from an advanced data standpoint across the board, including jumping from a 96.6 passer rating when targeted to a smoking 123.5 rating. However his issues with drops cropped up again, with Adams duffing 11 passes on 89 opportunities. Concentration drops have been a worrying trend, as the super-sized receiver was even benched for a spell in his first 2020 game against Memphis due to a blatant lazy drop, which led to him logging his season low of snaps with 36. In fact, Adams registered at least one drop in nine of his ten games played last season. Not great, Bob!  Despite those challenges, Adams clearly has highlight-reel playmaking ability due to advanced ball skills, speed, physicality and catch radius. He leverages his thick frame extremely in contested situations and to win on the outside while showing an uncanny knack for making athletic catches thanks to impressive body control. The traits outlined here made him a red zone monster despite questionable change of direction ability.  Despite weighing 220 pounds Adams posted tantalizing EXOS combine numbers, running a 4.48 second 40-yard dash, 41.5 inch vertical, 126 inch broad jump, 6.9 second three-cone and 4.13 shuttle run. Though his game tape boasts some jaw-dropping catches, I did not expect him to run a sub-4.5 at his size.  Where he gets into trouble is his lack of shiftiness, as Adams does not change direction well and has trouble accelerating on bounce routes. The Red Wolves' star also has a tendency run upright and can struggle to get separation as a consequence of his rather mundane route running polish.  Prior to his testing numbers being made public, many leading draft aficionados didn’t even have Adams ranked in their top-30 draft eligible wide receivers. PFF rates him the highest at WR22, while Xpand The Boxscore has him slightly lower at 24. I think their rankings are right on the money, as Adams is certainly worthy of a 6th-7th round selection.) NFL Rumors & Draft News: All the latest pre-free agency buzz (What am I missing about Jonathan Adams of Arkansas State? I’ve watched several of his games, and I see a tall, rangy WR with good size and speed. He has the ability to high-point the ball. So why isn’t the WR higher on boards?  Have to see how he runs during pro day. He’s supposed to be a mid-4.4-second guy. On the other hand, he really doesn’t play to that speed and his route tree is limited.  I like Adams but like him as a Day 3 selection.) College Football 2020: PFF's All-Sun Belt Team (First-Team: Jonathan Adams Jr., Ark State - Adams is far from a separation-getter, but that doesn’t matter with how often the 6-foot-3, 220-pound wide receiver bodies his defender in tight coverage. He led all FBS wide receivers in receiving grade on contested targets and caught a whopping 23 contested catches, nine more than any other FBS wide receiver.) NFL draft winners and losers: Ohio State QB Justin Fields somehow raised the bar even higher (Arkansas State wideout Jonathan Adams Jr. is third in the nation in receiving yards (673) and tied for fourth in TD catches (four), and he had another big game Thursday against the Mountaineers (six grabs for 134 yards).  When Jean-Charles matched up with Adams, he hauled in only one 11-yard catch on two targets. Jean-Charles was flagged once for pass interference, but he otherwise did a great job on Adams.  Why App State didn’t have Jean-Charles follow Adams until the second half in unclear. 2021 NFL Draft Wide Receiver Stock Watch: UCF's Marlon Williams has moved onto draft radar as legit prospect (Jonathan Adams, Arkansas State: Stock Up:  Adams is a relentless bully in the Fun Belt. He had 15 grabs for 176 yards and two scores in a high-scoring classic over Georgia State. After initially working underneath -- and flashing his athleticism around and power through tackles -- Adams made a phenomenal catch for a score that he had no business reeling in with a defender draped on him. His second score was even more outrageous, as he tracked the underthrown, back-shoulder ball near the front right pylon to give Arkansas State the lead in the fourth quarter. College Football: 5 players who look set for a big breakout after Week 2 (WR JONATHAN ADAMS JR., ARK STATE:  Adams saw 101 targets in 2019 and hauled in 62 for 851 yards and three scores, but he didn’t have as good of a year as his box-score stats suggest. He produced just a 65.8 receiving grade on the year and struggled at the catch point, despite being 6-foot-3, 220-pounds. Adams caught only nine of his 28 contested opportunities.  This year, however, Adams looks like he has taken his play to the next level. He appears much stronger in contested scenarios, catching five of eight such targets thus far (two more than any other FBS receiver, ranking first in grade). NFL draft winners and losers: Iowa State QB Brock Purdy comes up short in upset loss (Arkansas State WR Jonathan Adams Jr.:  A week after a tough opening game, Adams had the most eye-opening performance of the weekend, we believe, in the Red Wolves’ major upset over Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas.  Adams was benched briefly in Arkansas State’s opening loss to Memphis after a concentration drop, and he later left that game in the fourth quarter after getting banged up. He turned in a somewhat pedestrian six catches (on 10 targets) for 65 yards in that one.  But on Saturday, the physically blessed Adams was a one-man show. Despite the Red Hawks playing two quarterbacks and missing nine players (including another starting receiver, Dahu Green) for the game, Adams hauled in eight receptions for 98 yards and three touchdowns, including the winning TD grab with 38 seconds remaining.  And his best “catch” of the day didn’t even count. We’re still giving him credit for … something on this masterpiece. “He’s 6-3, 220 pounds of straight muscle that can jump above the rim,” Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson said. “He’s one of the best elevators I’ve ever seen.”  Last season, Adams was actually the team’s No. 3 receiver — behind NFL prospects Omar Bayless and Kirk Merritt — but still caught 62 catches for 851 yards and five scores. We think Adams has the best NFL body and upside of the three, and he’s now made himself into a bit of a household name in draft and college football circles after Saturday’s showcase performance.  His summer grades ranged from the sixth round to priority free agent, but those could be on the rise soon if Adams keeps ascending.) NFL Draft Stock Report: Pauline’s Week 2 Risers and Sliders (Risers - Jonathan Adams Jr., WR, Arkansas State:  ASU went into Kansas State as decided underdogs — but like a number of teams from the Sun Belt Conference, they came out victorious. Adams helped lead the way, as the big-bodied receiver finished the day with eight receptions for 98 yards and three touchdowns. Adams manhandled a talented Kansas State secondary that lines up several draftable prospects.  The senior has terrific size and times much faster than he plays. He also possesses solid hands, and if Adams builds on his K-State performance, there’s a good chance his name could be called in the late rounds of the draft.) Week 2 College Football Breakout Performers (Jonathan Adams - WR - Arkansas State:  What a difference a week makes? Adams caught six-of-ten targets for 65 yards in Arkansas State’s 37-24 loss to Memphis in their first contest. Adams was replaced by Bubba Ogbegor in the first half after he had a concentration-drop, and then again in the fourth quarter when Adams appeared to leave the game due to injury. With ASU’s other starting outside receiver Dahu Green sidelined against Kansas State, Adams was forced to take on the brunt of receiving work for the Red Wolves offense. Facing a Kansas State team that won eight games last season and allowed only 21.4 PPG, Adams proved up to the challenge of replacing 2019 All-American Omar Bayless. He caught eight-of-ten targets for 98 yards and three touchdowns as ASU’s primary aerial weapon. With :38 seconds left in the fourth quarter and Arkansas State down 31-28, Adams caught the game-winning 17-yard touchdown pass from Layne Hatcher to seal the victory for ASU. All of Adams touchdown receptions were within the red zone, as the 6-foot-3, 220 pounder’s physicality at the goal line allowed him to dominate the KSU secondary when it counted. Arkansas State takes on Central Arkansas next week as DFS aficionados will likely see a substantial increase from Adams’ very affordable $6000 Draft Kings price tag this week. College Football Games Today: Week 2 Live Blog with Tony Pauline (Jonathan Adams Jr. playing big boy football (12:30 pm ET):  Despite the fact scouts handed Adams a street free agent grade over the summer, I graded him as a priority free agent who could slide into the late rounds with good pre-draft workouts, and we just saw why.  After a terrific reception in the end zone that was called back due to a penalty, Adams out-muscled K-State corner A.J. Parker, universally graded as a late-round prospect, for a touchdown grab on the very next play.  Adams is a big, strong possession receiver who consistently wins out for the 50-50 balls.  He’ll be a good addition as a fifth wide out at the next level.) Previewing the Sun Belt’s top wide receivers and tight ends in 2020 (Jonathan Adams Jr., WR Arkansas State:  Jonathan Adams Jr., who narrowly edged out teammate Kirk Merritt by 45 receiving yards as the Red Wolves’ third receiver, has an opportunity to emerge from the substantial shadows cast by recently-departed wide receivers Omar Bayless and the aforementioned Merritt, and become a primary receiving option in 2020.  Similar to Bayless, Adams — who entered 2019 with just 25 receptions over his first two seasons — experienced a dramatic spike in production, registering 62 catches for 851 yards and five touchdowns.
