Monday, April 26: Latest rumors and buzz around the 2021 NFL Draft (Teams high on linebacker Derrick Barnes as potential day two selection in 2021 NFL Draft - (9:55 PM ET) Purdue linebacker Derrick Barnes, a personal favorite and someone I’ve covered in glory the past six months, is getting solid day two grades from NFL teams. Many teams have eight off the ball/space linebackers stamped as day two prospects, and Barnes fits in anywhere from the late second round to the late third round, depending on the team. Most like Barnes on the inside of a 3-4 alignment and feel he can play three downs to stack against the run, cover the pass, and even stand over tackle on pass rushing downs to chase the quarterback.) Lions 2021 draft: A linebacker for every round (Fifth round: Derrick Barnes, Purdue -Barnes has played every LB spot while at Purdue, from stand-up rush OLB to field-general ILB in the Boilermakers’ 3-4 scheme. He was at his best in 2020 playing primarily off-ball in the role that translates to the SAM backer in Lions DC Aaron Glenn’s anticipated scheme. Barnes has impressive chase-down speed for a compactly-built (6 feet, 238 pounds) body, and he sniffs out plays pretty well. What stands out with Barnes is his tackling power; he hits, wraps and drops his weight with fantastic consistency and he has enough jolt in his hits to make arm tackles and sideswipes work. He moved and covered better than expected at the Senior Bowl and kept up the new-and-improved athleticism at Purdue’s pro day. If those stick in the NFL, Barnes is a starter in the mold of Nick Kwiatkowski of the Raiders.) (4-8-21): https://lionswire.usatoday.com/lists/lions-2021-draft-a-linebacker-for-every-round/
Lions 2021 draft preview: Detroit could fill long-term need at linebacker in Round 2 (Also molded in the Big Ten, Purdue's Barnes showcased outstanding speed and strength at his pro day, which included a 4.62-second 40 and 29 reps on the bench. He bounced back and forth between an off-ball linebacker and defensive end for the Boilermakers, showing competency at both spots.) 2021 NFL Draft Scouting Notes And Thoughts (Three Day 3 players I like a lot - Derrick Barnes, LB, Purdue: A versatile defender who has played both EDGE and off-ball, I loved the development in Barnes’ game in 2020. He was visibly quicker and more alert to avoid blocks, two of the bigger questions entering the season. At the Senior Bowl, he showed he has the footwork and route recognition to drop into coverage and excel. Really good tackler who hits with desirable malice. His range and lateral quickness/footwork are limited enough that he won’t be drafted before the 4th round, but Barnes is a better all-around LB than several players who have been drafted earlier than that in recent years. ) (3-24-21): https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3350/2021-NFL-Draft-Scouting-Notes-And-Thoughts
Purdue Pro Day 2021: Rondale Moore and Tyler Coyle impress (Derrick Barnes - Linebacker Derrick Barnes measured just under 6-feet ½ inch and 238 pounds. His forty times came in as fast as 4.57 seconds, vertical jump 37 inches, broad jump 9-feet-11-inches with 29 reps on the bench. His short shuttle timed 4.27 to 4.32 seconds.) Senior Bowl Practice Review: Day 3 National Running Backs and Linebackers (Derrick Barnes - LB - Purdue: Unfortunately, Barnes has struggled this week. Day three continued with him struggling with the speed of much more talented players than some of the ones he has faced. He continued to take poor angles in team drills and was not showing an ability to cover space well. He was beaten over the top many times and wasn’t quick to react to throws in his zone. He measured out well and there are some raw traits to his game. He should be someone that a defensive coordinator at the next level will want to try and develop.) 2021 Senior Bowl: Film observations from day one (Derrick Barnes has everyone rethinking his evaluation: One of the best parts of attending Senior Bowl practices is when a player starts to generate some buzz. A few plays have everyone in the stands wondering who they are, furiously writing down notes, and then later at night whether in hotel lobbies – or more likely at the back of Veet’s – people exchange notes on the player. Purdue linebacker Derrick Barnes generated some buzz, although more of the virtual kind, due to his performance on the first day. We mentioned Barnes in our “players to watch” piece from Monday, as someone who could be labeled with the dreaded “tweener” tag but showed some ability both off the edge and as an off-ball linebacker. But on Tuesday he was used in more of an off-ball role and he shined. Whether it was in pass coverage locking down backs in one-on-one drills, or filling the hole during inside run with a violent collision against Michigan fullback Ben Mason, Barnes showed some ability. Keep an eye on him.)(1-27-21): https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/2021-senior-bowl-film-observations-from-day-one/
2021 Senior Bowl Practice Report: National Team | PFN (Tuesday - Derrick Barnes saw a lot of action on Tuesday and fared well, all things considered. He was late to fill his gap on one occasion, but more often than not, the linebacker read things well and dished out solid contact. It’ll take a big performance with the National Team in the Senior Bowl for Barnes to rise higher than Day 3. But he could still have a long future at the next level. Wednesday - Derrick Barnes has had a good week thus far. He has good size and density, and he also showed off good first-step quickness in coverage drills. Having said that, Barnes was a little stiff with his hip transitions following his backpedal. He’ll have to maintain his quick processing skills in order to compensate, but so far, he’s put up a respectable performance. Thursday - Barnes was fairly decisive in his action on Thursday, making quick reads to gaps. He could use more physicality when disengaging in run defense, but he was steady throughout the practice. Overall, it was a good week for Barnes. Analysis - Derrick Barnes had a good week. After weighing in at 245 pounds under 6-foot-1, there were some concerns over whether he could move well enough with that density. I think he proved himself to have decent athleticism for that size, and he also provided a steady presence in the linebacker group. He wasn’t much of a playmaker beyond his initial utility. However, he showed a lot of traits that suggest he can at least keep things clean at the next level.) (1-26-21): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2021-senior-bowl-practice-report-national-team/
Senior Bowl Players to Watch: Defense (Derrick Barnes, LB, Purdue: Here comes another of the dreaded “tweener” types. During his collegiate career at Purdue linebacker Derrick Barnes has been used as both an off-ball linebacker and an EDGE defender. In 2019 he was used more as a pass rusher and that saw a breakout season develop, as he notched 7.5 sacks. This season he was used as more of a traditional linebacker, and even in limited action he failed to record a sack. The Senior Bowl gives him a chance to show what he can do best at the next level. Is he athletic enough to win consistently on the edge, making him valuable as a pass rusher? Is he instinctive enough to be a force in an off-ball role in the NFL? He’ll need to answer these questions one way or another, and Mobile gives him a chance to do just that before NFL eyes.) 2021 NFL Draft: Big Ten prospects to know after conference cancels fall college football season (Edge rusher Derrick Barnes shows burst and an ability to finish plays but he needs to develop more pass rushing moves. ) (8-19-20): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2021-nfl-draft-big-ten-prospects-to-know-after-conference-cancels-fall-college-football-season/
