Day 3 Grades and Analysis

WR Amon-Ra St. Brown:

Grades:

PFN (Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, USC.  Alright, it’s over. The Lions won the draft. Amon-Ra St. Brown was a top-50 prospect on my board. He’s explosive, smart, and underrated in his run-after-catch ability. None of this even takes his contested catch ability into account. He can separate downfield with twitch, but when he doesn’t, he has the alpha mentality, body control, and hand strength to come away successful. The Lions continue to score tremendous value. Walter Football (Detroit Lions: Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, USC - B Grade.  Amon-Ra St. Brown was productive at USC, and he obviously helps fill a huge need for the Lions, who have nothing at receiver. CBS Prisco (112. Lions, Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, USC
Grade: C+.  One of the better route runners in the class. And flashes hand-catching capabilities away from his frame. But some concentration drops and lacks as a sudden, explosive athlete. PFF (112. WR St Brown:  Pick Grade:Very Good.  St. Brown has no trump card, but he’s a good all-around wide receiver. He possesses good body control, offers value after the catch, can run a full route tree and was consistently productive at USC, generating 2.11 yards per route run throughout his career. PFN (Derrick Barnes, LB, Purdue:  The Lions could have gone with Jabril Cox here, who’s a higher-ranked player on my board. That said, Derrick Barnes is an elite athlete, with a 4.57 40-yard dash and a 37-inch vertical at 6-foot-0, 238 pounds. Grade: B.  Shorter, stocky off-ball linebacker with good short-area quickness. Crazy long arms. And crushes it as a pass-rusher off the edge. Fun, unique prospect. PFF (Pick Grade:Average.  Barnes is taken this early solely because of his athletic prowess; not because of anything he did on the field at Purdue. He clocked a 4.57-second 40-yard dash time and a 37-inch vertical at his Pro Day. ESPN (113. LB Derrick Barnes: Pre-Draft Analysis:  Barnes has good size, long arms and sideline-to-sideline range. He has the burst to spy quarterbacks. PFN (Jermar Jefferson, RB, Oregon State:  The Lions had a strong draft, but this pick is a little underwhelming. The Lions already have a crowded RB rotation, and Jermar Jefferson is small and not a great athlete. CBS Prisco (257. Lions, Jermar Jefferson, RB, Oregon St. - Grade: B+.  Best season was freshman year in 2018. Vision for stretch plays is outstanding. ESPN (Pre-Draft Analysis:  Jefferson is an efficient back who follows his blocks, has good balance and lowers his shoulder to finish runs.
