NFL.com (26. Detroit Lions (Previous rank: No. 24):  The Lions have been a mess on defense all season, but the offense was there to keep the team competitive and afloat. Sunday’s 29-0 loss to the Patriots is what happens when Jared Goff and Co. don’t put their best foot forward. The cracks are showing for a Dan Campbell regime that is high on charisma and likability, but still dangerously low on tangible success. "To me, this is about as bad as it gets,” the coach said Sunday. “... I believe we hit rock bottom, so now the only place to go is back up." FTW (26.  Detroit Lions (Last week’s rank: 19):  All three of Detroit’s losses in a 1-3 start came by four points or fewer, casting the impression this team was just a few tweaks away from a possible playoff run in a weak NFC. Then the Patriots ran roughshod over them with their third-string quarterback and a once-explosive offense shrunk like melon thrown into a furnace. Detroit Lions (Last week: 24):  After seemingly displaying some real progress between the lines early, this team has been back to the version that shoots itself in the foot and no-shows on the road. Yahoo (27. Detroit Lions (1-4, LW: 24):  At least the Lions could count on a fun offense before Sunday. Getting shut out in New England was a big step back. All of a sudden it's just a 1-4 team with a horrendous defense and an offense we can't even count on anymore. The Lions go into the bye with any preseason excitement about this season long gone. SI (27. Detroit Lions (1–4):  Getting blanked by the Patriots was a heartbreaking moment for the Lions-will-turn-this-around crowd. Fox sports (28. Detroit Lions (1-4): At no point this season has anyone believed the Lions were legitimately good, but it was fun and surprising and cool that they had the league's best offense. If you're going to lose, you might as well lose in entertaining fashion. SN (30. Detroit Lions 1-4 (29):  What was that? The hottest high-scoring offense in the league failed to score a point against Bill Belichick's Patriots defense on the road. ESPN (30. Detroit Lions (1-4) (Week 5 ranking: 25):  Chance to make the playoffs: 0.7%.  Chance to win their division: 0.1%.  Let's be real: From a talent perspective, this team doesn't have a lot of game-changing players on defense. And through four weeks, the Lions accomplished something that no other team in league history had done since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger when they led the NFL in points per game while ranking last in points per game allowed. That's a problem! Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn says they struggle with consistency and defending the red zone. Also, Glenn feels the interior defense has been solid, but the Lions are now focusing on improving the perimeter defense -- mainly in the secondary. Detroit Lions (1-4):  Last week: No. 26.  The Lions were seemingly doing well through the first three games of the season, but they had trouble with the Seahawks last week and were shutout on the road against the New England Patriots. CBS (30. Lions:  The defense was bad again, but this time in the loss to the Patriots the offense was just as bad. PFN (Week 6 NFL Power Rankings: Tier 6 | Definitely Bad Teams - Even though the NFL season has been as unpredictable as a feral cat, it appears pretty obvious that the teams in Tier 6 don’t currently have playoff hopes through five weeks.  Detroit Lions:  The Detroit Lions have done a good job competing over the past two seasons, but they’ve come up short a majority of the time. Every once in a while they’ve been totally dominated in a game during the Dan Campbell era, and the Patriots game in Week 5 was an example of that.  The Patriots were on their third QB, and the Lions have shown the ability to score points in bunches this season. Even though New England was the Vegas favorite, this felt like a game Detroit could win.
