PFN Fragoza (7. Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee: Hello, Hendon Hooker. Welcome to the first round! This is likely not the first, nor the last time you will see Hooker on Day 1 of mock drafts — and for good reason. He’s thrown 46 TDs to just four INTs since transferring to Tennessee last year. The offense isn’t exactly “pro-style,” but the scheme has put Hooker’s arm talent on full display. Sure, he’s 25 years old, but the tape doesn’t lie. Hooker has excellent touch on deep balls with the arm strength to throw missiles into tight windows. Hand him the keys to Motor City. 20. Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina: Following a three-interception campaign, QBs just aren’t targeting Cam Smith this season. He exudes confidence and pairs his physicality with a solid athletic foundation to shut down his side of the field.) Walter football Charlie (3. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama: The Lions could choose to move on from Jared Goff after this season without any salary-cap pain. They also could keep Goff for 2023 while developing a future starter behind him. Goff is a competent pro starter, but not a championship-caliber quarterback, and Detroit needs an upgrade over him. In 2022, Young has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,202 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has picked up 154 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as well. Young (5-11, 194) took over as Alabama's starting quarterback in 2021, and there was a lot of hype about him in the scouting community. Some sources with college teams say they think he could end up being a better college quarterback than Tua Tagovailoa or Mac Jones. Some NFL sources believe Young's skill set and style of play are similar to those of Kyler Murray. In 2021, Young completed 67 percent of his passes for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns and seven interceptions. 21. Clark Phillips, CB: Jeff Okudah finally is playing well for Detroit, but Amani Oruwariye has been awful in 2022 and is an impending free agent. Considering Mike Hughes is a short-term rental hitting free agency, the Lions could really use two cornerback upgrades to go with Okudah. So far in 2022, Phillips has 16 tackles, five interceptions and two passes defended. He played well against Florida to open the year. In 2021, he collected 61 tackles, two interceptions and 13 passes defended. Phillips is a talented cover corner who can run the route and prevent separation. The big question with Phillips will be size because he is listed at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds. CBS Edwards (6. CB Kelee Ringo: The jury is still out on Jeff Okudah. Detroit either has a pair of starting-caliber boundary cornerbacks or it has a replacement. After the season we’ve seen, it’s easy to see why fans are holding off in a 2023 NFL Mock Draft. After Stroud and Young, QB3 doesn’t appear to be settled yet. With that being said, Lions fans pair one of the best corners in college football with Jeff Okudah. Ringo is proving to be a smooth operator for the Georgia Bulldogs, so much so that teams are choosing to test freshman Malaki Starks more. It’s not going well, so teams must find a new strategy for their passing attack. 20. Detroit Lions (via LAR): Antonio Johnson, CB, Texas A&M: Lions fans want to address the secondary in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft. After taking Kelee Ringo earlier in the first round, they add Texas A&M’s Antonio Johnson. With teams finding life fairly easy against Detroit’s defense, it’s easy to see why fans are fed up. Johnson brings a versatile skill set to the defense, and his size and speed should be utilized all over the field at the next level. Bryce Young is the pick here, as it was always going to be a quarterback for Detroit at the top of the draft. Young makes magic happen with his right arm and legs. He’ll escape the pocket while maintaining vision downfield and matches his best football from off-platform throws. It may be a relatively unstable way to win games, but Young’s ability in the unscripted, almost-backyard-type football is uncanny. He also plays incredibly well from within the pocket, as he’s accurate, sharp with his decisions, and has plenty of strength in his arm. 21. Detroit Lions (from LAR): Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State: Falling a bit from his initial projection is Jaxon Smith-Njigba after a hamstring injury has sidelined him for all but essentially a full game’s worth of work this season. Smith-Njigba may be the most talented receiver in OSU’s wide receiving corps, and he’s flashed that high-level potential against some vaunted secondaries during his time in Columbus. Smith-Njigba wins along every route and can create natural separation with his impeccable route-running skills. He isn’t the fastest receiver, but he doesn’t need to be. He’ll lose defenders at the line or at the top of his route breaks, leaving them grabbing for his jersey to attempt to catch up to him.) Bryce Young, QB, Alabama (6-0, 194 pounds): The Lions have had gotten some above-average play from Jared Goff early with support from the a strong offensive line, reliable running game and expanded weapons. But Goff has proved he still has a limited ceiling and sometimes the floor can drop under him, too. They need a transcendent athletic passer to raise their overall upside and Young would go No. 1 in most other draft classes. 14. Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina (6-0, 188 pounds): The Lions' defense has plenty of holes vs. run and pass behind Aidan Hutchinson so best player on that side is a good bet with this other first-rounder.
