One thing we learned from every team in Week 8 (Detroit Lions:  They can run without David Montgomery: Give credit to Jahmyr Gibbs and Craig Reynolds, who were the cogs behind Detroit rushing for 222 yards in Monday's win over Las Vegas. Gibbs had 26 carries for 152 yards as the featured back, while Reynolds added 14 carries for 74 yards. The pair averaged 5.7 yards per carry, running behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. Not having Montgomery did affect the Lions in the red zone (1 of 5), yet Detroit was able to hold the ball for 39:33 thanks to the running backs. NFL WR Rankings 2023: Puka Nucua, Brandon Aiyuk, and CeeDee Lamb Establish Themselves Among Best Wide Receivers in the NFL (17. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions:  It’s not often we see an entire group of amateurs on the internet who know better than the professionals tasked with selecting players. However, everyone but the league saw Amon-Ra St. Brown coming from a mile away.  St. Brown is a nifty player after the catch, and the improvements he’s made in his timing from the slot have made him a very friendly receiver to Jared Goff.  He’s not the biggest or most explosive receiver in the league, but St. Brown plays with impressive strength and fluidity. NFL QB Power Rankings Week 9 2023: Kirk Cousins Leaves the List on the Highest Note (8.  Jared Goff, Detroit Lions:  Jared Goff has been wonderful in 2023, but his inability to create when things break down in front of him was on full display on Monday Night Football. His pick-six was directly related to his stiffness as an athlete. When he’s forced to flee, he can’t consistently generate the velocity necessary to make plays.  But because he is a whipsmart veteran and the Lions have really leaned into having a dominant offensive line, he’s able to produce at an incredibly high level. Grades:

Walter football NFL Trade Grades (Lions acquire WR Donovan Peoples-Jones from Browns for 2025 6th-round pick - The Lions don’t have many weaknesses because their front office has put together a tremendous roster. Receiving depth, however, is an issue because Jameson Williams has not lived up to his first-round billing just yet. There’s still plenty of time for that to happen, but the Lions needed some help this year as they make their playoff run.  Donovan Peoples-Jones won’t move the needle very much, but he’s a solid addition for the Lions. He’ll be a fine tertiary option for Jared Goff. Peoples-Jones has always been inconsistent in Cleveland, but it never seemed as though the Browns ever figured out how to use him. Perhaps Detroit will have better luck.  I think this is fair compensation for both teams. I think the Lions come out a bit ahead, but it’s nice that the Browns could get something for a player they didn’t use enough.  Grade for Lions – B+.  Grade for Browns – B):  https://walterfootball.com/nfltrades.php

FTW NFL trade deadline tracker: All the deals that shook up the Super Bowl 58 race (and their grades) (Jared Goff and the Lions rescue a useful wideout from the Browns' stagnant passing game.  The deal - Detroit Lions acquire: WR Donovan Peoples-Jones.  Cleveland Browns acquire: 2025 sixth round pick. Peoples-Jones had 834 receiving yards in 2022, but a 2023 breakthrough was not to be. He languished in a subpar passing offense and fell out of favor, recording only 18 targets through seven games despite playing 83 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. Now he’ll get the chance to revive his career playing in an offense that already performed a much larger resuscitation by pushing Jared Goff back to Pro Bowl form. The grades:  Detroit Lions: B+.  Cleveland Browns: C-.  The Lions get a 24-year-old wideout with a track record as a useful option further down the depth chart — and now he and Josh Reynolds get to settle in as WR3/4 types behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and, Detroit hopes, Jameson Williams. He also gets to be insurance in case Williams continues to have a muted impact on Sundays, having served as a solid deep threat his first two seasons in the league.  Cleveland, on the other hand, subtracts a weapon from an already undermanned offense. Peoples-Jones didn’t have much to do in the Browns’ playbook this fall, and dealing him gets something back for a pending free agent who clearly wasn’t in the team’s future. SN Grading every trade that happens before the 2023 NFL trade deadline (Lions trade for Browns WR Donovan Peoples-Jones - Lions grade: B.  Browns grade: B+.  The Lions didn't have a major need at receiver, but with Jameson Williams' shaky performance and Marvin Jones' departure from the team, adding a player to provide depth and upside makes sense.  Peoples-Jones checks both boxes. He hasn't been productive this season, catching just eight passes for 97 yards despite playing more snaps than any Cleveland receiver, but he generated 839 yards and three touchdowns on 61 catches in 2022. So, the Lions are likely banking on him having better chemistry with Jared Goff than he has with Deshaun Watson and PJ Walker.  Peoples-Jones is just 24, so he has upside that the Lions might be able to coax out of him. At the very least, his size and speed should make him good insurance in case Williams continues to struggle to adjust to the NFL game.  The Lions gave up just a sixth-round pick to get Peoples-Jones, so it's not a bad move for them. But Cleveland wins this trade because it will open up more reps for David Bell and Cedric Tillman to get work. PFF 2023 NFL trade deadline tracker: Grades for every deal (CLEVELAND BROWNS WR DONOVAN PEOPLES-JONES → DETROIT LIONS.  Trade compensation: 2024 sixth-round pick.  Lions: Great.  The Lions lost last year’s deep ball threat in D.J. Chark to free agency and brought back beloved veteran Marvin Jones Jr., but he stepped away from football earlier this season. 2022 first-round pick speedster Jameson Williams has started to make plays, including explosive receptions downfield, but is not quite the big-bodied contested target guy and has also been inconsistent.  Peoples-Jones was quite productive in 2022, hauling in 61 receptions for 839 yards and three touchdowns, with just three drops on 95 targets. Peoples-Jones recorded 30 receptions on passes 10-plus yards downfield in 2022, ranking 16th among wide receivers, and he fills a needed role in Detroit seamlessly.  Peoples-Jones is from the Detroit area and played college football at Michigan, so this is a great geographic fit, as well. Browns: Average.  Cleveland moves on from a former sixth-round pick for a fresh sixth-round pick in the final year of Peoples-Jones’ contract, but the drop-off in production from last season has been steep. Nevertheless, the writing was on the wall here when the Browns used a third-round pick on Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Cedric Tillman, who fits the exact mold as the big-bodied, contested-catch target downfield.
