2024 division winners: Will they make it back? (Detroit Lions - My pick for 2025: In the playoffs (NFC wild card).  With my four division retainers already claimed, I was left with one of the four remaining winners to push into the playoffs as a wild-card team. Of those four, it seemed clear to pick the Lions, who could fall off from their 15-win season and still have plenty left in the tank to make it to the postseason. Despite losing just about every pass rusher and cornerback they had on the roster by the time the defense finally fell apart in the playoffs, an inspired effort from D-coordinator Aaron Glenn and an inspired offense fueled by coordinator Ben Johnson was enough to consistently get the Lions over the hump on a weekly basis. They dominated bad teams and reliably beat good ones.  The Lions should still be among the league's best teams, although they probably won't ride their luck to another 7-2 mark in one-score contests. The defense can't possibly be as injured as it was a year ago, but the offense was one of the league's healthiest, and there are real questions about the new-look interior of their O-line. It's tough to envision a scenario in which the Lions don't take some sort of hit after losing both Glenn and Johnson to head-coaching gigs. That could be just enough to open the door for one of the teams below them in the NFC North, although I won't spoil which one just yet.  That leaves me to project three 2024 division winners to miss the postseason entirely. Two of them defied that fate last season. Can they keep it up again?):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45934298/2025-nfl-season-14-playoff-teams-chances-return-super-bowl

QB Power Rankings: Lamar Jackson opens at No. 1 (7 .  Jared Goff
Detroit Lions QB:  It's possible the all-star Lions already hit their peak with the resilient but pressure-affected Goff as the point guard. Still, he's overcome the odds before. And his bevy of playmakers remains largely unmatched.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/week-1-nfl-qb-power-rankings-four-afc-stars-lead-the-way-where-does-aaron-rodgers-debut-with-steelers/

NFL QB rankings, Week 1: Josh Allen 3rd to start 2025 season; Who's No. 1? (Tier 2 - 10.  Jared Goff.  Jared Goff spent the 2024 season at a well-deserved higher spot in my rankings, but I'm bracing for a dip in production now that Ben Johnson has left for the Chicago sideline.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-qb-rankings-index-week-1-2025-nfl-season

NFL TV Coverage Map Week 1: Full Breakdown of CBS, Fox Broadcasts (7. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Lions (age: 25):  St. Brown exploded early as a dynamic slot, but he's become a more complete alignment-independent receiver of late, upping his big-play juice and red-zone scoring. Those attributes are key in the Lions new offense.  22. Jameson Williams, Lions (age: 24):  Williams is another member of the 2022 draft class. Between suspension and injury issues, it took him a couple of seasons to find his big-play groove playing off St. Brown in the Lions' offense. The speedy threat is now locked in, and he should benefit from a more aggressive passing game for Jared Goff.):  https://www.si.com/media/nfl-tv-coverage-map-week-1-fox-cbs

Upset Alert: Why these 5 favorites could fall in Week 1 (Green Bay Packers (-2.5) vs. Detroit Lions:  As we noted in our "Week 1 early odds" piece, which was released earlier this week, this line has moved considerably. Detroit was initially the road favorite, opening at -1.5. However, that has since swung to the Packers, who have only gained steam in the aftermath of the Micah Parsons trade. Now, Green Bay is laying 2.5 and is -142 on the moneyline. That's too rich, particularly against a team as talented as the Lions.  First, we don't even know how much Parsons will play in his debut. The former Cowboys pass rusher didn't practice throughout the summer, partially because of his contract dispute, but he is also dealing with a back injury. He reportedly may even need an epidural injection to play in the season opener. That doesn't exactly scream that Parsons is 100%, so however much his presence has inflated this spread, it could burn Green Bay backers.  In addition to the Parsons angle, the Packers are still an unknown. Jordan Love has historically struggled out of the gate, and the club went 1-5 (0-5-1 ATS) against divisional opponents last year, which included two losses to Detroit. Yes, the Lions lost both coordinators this offseason, but they still have one of the most talented and deepest teams in the NFL. They could very well walk out of Lambeau Field with a win on Sunday.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/upset-alert-in-week-1-why-these-5-nfl-favorites-could-easily-drop-their-season-opener/

Who Will Be The Best QB At The End of 2025? NFL Coaches, GMs and Execs (10. Jared Goff, Lions - 3 points.  Appeared on three ballots.   Last year: 16th place.  Here’s the top pick in the 2016 draft. The best way to look at what Goff’s done is to look at where the Rams and Lions were before he got to town. He’s led both to conference title games and multiple playoff appearances. He’s the only guy on this list who can make that claim.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/nfl-mount-rushmore-league-evaluators-vote-best-quarterback-end-2025

Who’s Under the Most Pressure in the 2025 NFL Season? (The Lions’ assistant replacements - Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, left, and linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard, right, react to a play against Green Bay Packers during the first half at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024.  The 2024 Detroit Lions finished the regular season with a 15-2 record, tied with the Chiefs for the NFL’s best, and that was despite an injury situation that devolved from disconcerting to morbidly comical as the season progressed. A lot of that had to do with the fact that head coach Dan Campbell had two of the NFL’s best assistant coaches alongside him – offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Injuries prevented the Lions from making the most of that braintrust, as they were gobsmacked in the divisional round 45-31 by the Washington Commanders.   Now, Campbell has to replace Johnson (the Chicago Bears’ new head coach) and Glenn (the New York Jets’ head coach) with former Denver Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton and former Lions linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard.  While it’s possible that both Morton and Sheppard can hit the ground running and keep things where they were, it’s also true that any dropoff will have everybody questioning the new guys right away, especially as Johnson and Glenn were so great with their signature concepts — Johnson with the route designs and spacing, along with a highly underrated run game, and Glenn’s ability to take the right guys and turn his defense into a claustrophobic press coverage machine.  It’s unfortunate that the Lions underwent the usual brain drain you see with Super Bowl teams without winning the Super Bowl, but that’s Campbell’s primary challenge in 2025.):  https://athlonsports.com/nfl/lamar-jackson-josh-allen-mike-mcdaniel-aaron-rodgers
