Lions Week 1 Predictions

CBS Breech (Lions at Packers (-2.5):  For the first time in 25 years, the Packers are opening their season with a game on CBS. Does that make us the biggest winner of the Micah Parsons trade? Yes. I think you could say that because it means that we'll be televising Micah Parsons' first game with the Packers. But that's only if he plays.   The weird thing about the Parsons trade is that I'm not sure Parsons is actually going to help the Packers his week. For one, he's not in football shape because he hasn't practiced in nearly three months. The only way to get into football shape is to play football and by the time this game rolls around, Parsons will only have four days of practice under his belt. Also, Parsons still has to learn Green Bay's entire defensive playbook. And he has to do all that while battling a bad back.  Um, did Jerry Jones win this trade? I might have to take back everything about Jerry Jones earlier. Give that man the GM of the year award.  Based on Parsons' back situation, I'll be shocked if he's on the field for even a quarter of the Packers' defensive plays in this game, so basically, for at least this week, I don't think Parsons is going to have a huge impact.  Last season, the Packers were either the best bad team or the worst good team. I've had nine months to think about it and I'm still not sure. They went 11-1 against teams that finished with 10 wins or less, but 0-6 against teams that won 11 games or more. They also went just 1-5 in the NFC North.  One problem for the Packers is that Matt LaFleur hasn't been able to figure out how to beat the Lions with Detroit winning six of the past seven games in this series.  The Lions definitely have some question marks -- they have to replace both coordinators, they have a rookie at right guard (Tate Ratledge) and their starting center retired -- but they will have Aidan Hutchinson back and I feel like his return will push Detroit to the win.   The Lions have won three straight in Green Bay and if they win this game, they might as well change the name of the stadium to "Lionbeau field."  THE PICK: Lions 20-16 over Packers | Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-1-picks-and-score-predictions-eagles-top-cowboys-in-thursday-night-shootout-lions-shock-packers/

SN Iyer (Upset of the Week: Lions - (-2.5, 47.5 o/u) over Packers.  The Packers are getting the juice at home in this critical early NFC North game with Micah Parsons about to make his defensive debut. The problem is, the Lions will be comfortable running often at Parsons in Lambeau Field and have much fewer questions around the QB. SN Bender (Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers (-1.5) - Will Micah Parsons make his Packers' debut? This a strange line seeing as though the Lions have won the last three meetings at Lambeau Field, and Dan Campbell is 6-2 against the Packers. Jordan Love (thumb) will be available, and he has a 1-4 S/U record with a 62.5% completion in five starts against Detroit. How much will rookie Matthew Golden help? SI Verderame (Lions at Packers - Key matchup: Jeff Hafley vs. the Lions’ brain trust.  Key stat: The Packers had the 31st-highest blitz rate last season.  Only one team had a pair of Pro Bowl tackles in 2024: the Lions.  This week, Detroit will be in for arguably its best test on the edges with a visit to Lambeau Field. Only two weeks ago, it appeared Green Bay would be outmatched with Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness going against Lions tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker. Suddenly, the addition of Parsons has changed the calculus. Last year, only three teams created more turnovers than Green Bay. The Packers also relied heavily on a four-man rush under first-year coordinator Jeff Hafley, ranking 31st in blitz rate (17.3%). The result was the 16th-best pressure rate (22.1%) and nobody reaching even eight sacks. Still, Green Bay created sacks by simulating pressure more than anybody but the Ravens, walking corners and linebackers up and either faking blitzes or bringing them before dropping out a linemen to still have seven in coverage.  For Jared Goff, the concern will be figuring out who is coming and how much help to provide on Parsons, whether he’s lined up over Decker or Sewell. Against the Packers in 2024, Detroit permitted a single sack and six quarterback hits across two wins. On the interior, the Lions have a rookie second-round guard in Tate Ratledge, along with second-year man Christian Mahogany. As important, All-Pro center Frank Ragnow retired, leaving guard-turned-center Graham Glasgow to make the protection calls under a new coordinator, John Morton.  Bottom line: Look for Hafley to give myriad looks to Morton, Glasgow and Goff while scheming up one-on-one opportunities with Parsons off the edge. CBS Dajani and Taranto (Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers (-2.5):  Dajani (Packers -2.5): I don't want to be a prisoner of the moment, but the Packers just traded for Micah Parsons and the Lions lost both of their elite coordinators in Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn. Remember the 2023 Eagles? After falling in Super Bowl LVII, they lost offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. What followed next was this weird, discombobulated 11-6 season that saw Philly get blown out in the wild-card round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 32-9. The Eagles needed to again reset at both coordinator spots to return to the Super Bowl. Did the Lions make the right decision at OC and DC? Does it even matter as much as we have been talking about it? We'll find out shortly. ... Packers 26, Lions 21.  Taranto (Lions +2.5): If Lions head coach Dan Campbell deserves credit for anything he's done in Detroit, it's getting the Lions to stop being the Packers' own personal doormat. Given that they've done it by building an identity of being perhaps the most physical team in the NFL, I like the idea of the Lions continuing that despite the loss of both of their coordinators from a year ago, and despite the hype that the Packers have enjoyed in the past week since trading for Micah Parsons. ... CBS Prisco (Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers (-2.5):  These are two of the better teams in the NFC, which is a great way to open the season. The Lions have two new coordinators on offense and defense, which is something to watch. The Packers appear to be all-in with the move to get Micah Parsons from Dallas. How much can he impact this game without taking part in camp is a big question.
