(DETROIT LIONS- The Lions re-signed Alex Anzalone this offseason, but Anzalone has always been more productive when coming downhill as opposed to being assigned coverage duties. Malcolm Rodriguez enjoyed a surprisingly effective rookie season, but opposing quarterbacks enjoyed a passer rating of 109.3 when targeting Rodriguez in coverage. All that tells us is he’s versatile, athletic as can be, and one heck of a team player.  Now, Henley’s inexperience at LB shows at times, and he’s a bit light at inside linebacker. 2023 NFL Draft linebacker rankings: Who's behind Drew Sanders? (3. Daiyan Henley, Washington State, 6-1, 225, Redshirt Senior - Overview: A testament to dedication, Henley began his college career six years ago as an under-recruited, two-way player out of downtown Los Angeles, signing with Nevada as a wide receiver. He caught on quickly, hauling in three touchdowns as a true freshman and upping his production slightly a year later, but Wolfpacks coaches started experimenting with him on defense in 2018 and, after he missed much of the 2019 season due to an undisclosed injury, he took over as a full-time defender in 2020, playing in all nine games of the pandemic-shortened season and finishing third on the team with 49 tackles.  He started all 12 games in 2021, leading the Wolfpack with 103 stops and proving that he didn't forget his hands in the position switch by topping the team with four interceptions, as well. Graduated, with a year of eligibility remaining, Henley entered the transfer portal and suddenly found himself much more respected by recruiters, turning down the likes of USC, Kansas State and Washington to sign with the Cougars, where in 2022 Henley enjoyed arguably the greatest single season in WSU linebacker history, collecting 106 tackles (second most in the conference), as well as 12 tackles for loss and four sacks. Strengths: It is easy to see where the extra weight has gone since Henley made the switch from receiver, with the defender sporting a chiseled, V-shaped frame that speaks to his commitment to the weightroom. While certainly still a work in progress in terms of his diagnostics, Henley trusts what he sees and takes sharp, aggressive angles, seeming to enjoy blasting the "former receiver" reputation with impressive physicality and selflessness to take on blocks, as well as ballcarriers.  Not only did he play on special teams in 2022, but he led the team in tackles (six). His experience as a receiver shows with his savvy in coverage, including advanced ball skills for the position, snaring five interceptions over the past two seasons (including a game-sealer vs. Idaho in his WSU debut) and turning heads in one-on-one drills at the Senior Bowl.  Concerns: He's still a relative neophyte at the position and can get tricked with eye-candy, taking false steps and leaving himself and his teammates scrambling to recover. Lighter than preferred for a traditional inside linebacker role, which is where he excelled in college. Currently relies on beating would-be blockers to the punch, struggling to disengage in time to get back into the play once they latch on.  Bottom Line: Henley took the Pac-12 by storm in his one season at WSU, becoming the first Coug ever to be named a finalist for the vaunted Butkus Award. His success in two schemes on two different teams ease any doubt I have about his future. A fluid mover in coverage as well, watching him stick his foot in the ground to wrangle down ball carriers from extreme depth is fascinating to watch.) Lions have pre-draft visits scheduled with a pair of Tennessee Volunteers (3rd round: Daiyan Henley, Washington State:  Henley is arguably the best coverage linebacker in the draft. It makes sense considering he arrived in Pullman as a safety and never lost touch with seeing the field more as a defensive back than a linebacker.  At 6-1 and 225 pounds, he relies on his speed and surprising tackling power to make plays. Henley’s playing speed is outstanding, and he can turn and run in man coverage with any TE or RB on the field. The quick reactions are important because Henley isn’t the most instinctive LB in run defense, and he doesn’t anticipate blocks well, though that has shown improvement.  Where Henley might gain a real edge for the Lions is with his special teams prowess. 2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 linebackers (4. Daiyan Henley, Washington State (Height: 6′ 0⅜” (14th percentile), Weight: 225 (5th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.54 (88th), 10-Yard Split: 1.55 (85th), Vertical Jump: 35″ (63rd), Broad Jump: 125″ (88th), Arm Length: 33″ (74th), Hand Size: 9½” (41st)) - Bio: Daiyan Henley has been around. He started his collegiate career at Nevada as a receiver in 2017, moved to defensive back in 2019, and then to linebacker in 2020. His transfer to Washington State for the 2022 season put him on the national radar, and Henley responded with a season in which he had five sacks, 18 pressures, 74 tackles, 40 stops, and he allowed 34 catches on 46 targets for 361 yards, 212 yards after the catch, two touchdowns, one interception, one pass breakup, and an opponent passer rating of 101.8. In 2022, Henley played 560 snaps at linebacker, 59 in the slot, 39 along the defensive line, seven at cornerback, and one at free safety.  Stat to Know: In 2021, his final season at Nevada, Henley had four interceptions. If you want a guy who can defend flat to curl all day long, Henley should be on your list.  Strengths: So, we know that Henley can cover. If he’s going to be a plus NFL linebacker, he’s also going to have to stop the run to some degree. While he’s not going to be a downhill headbanger at his size, Henley does shoot gaps very well against the run game, and the arm length helps when he’s wrap-tackling.  Henley can also disrupt the quarterback from the edge, and as a blitzer. He already has an elevated sense of getting after the passer on stunts and games.  Weaknesses: Henley does have issues diagnosing at times; he’s almost the inverse Jack Campbell in that he’ll go hell-bent for where he thinks the play is going, and it isn’t always going that way. Misdirection and play-action will be an issue at the NFL level at times, and in a league where quarterbacks are performing sleight-of-hand at the highest levels, that’s not great.  As long as he breaks for the ball at the right time, Henley is a good coverage linebacker, as we have seen. But there are times when you’d like to see him be more proactive when getting to his target.  Conclusion: Henley comes into the NFL at a time when his type of linebacker — the off-ball specialist who can legitimately cover half the field — is more valuable than ever. When he’s on point and understands what the offense is doing, he’ll be an asset from the second he steps into the building. His professional coaches will have to clean up the diagnosis stuff, but Henley is well on his way to helping to define his eventual NFL defense.  NFL Comparison: Bobby Okereke. The Colts got Okereke in the third round of the 2019 draft out of Stanford, and Okereke overcame some early play-reading issues to become one of the NFL’s more underrated linebackers. Okereke just signed a four-year, $40 million contract with the Giants, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Henley provide similar value to his defense(s) as a do-it-all guy for his size.) Though he is a tad undersized for the position, Henley has elite arm length (33 inches) and was one of the most sure-tackling linebackers in college football. As a downhill defender, he’s extremely explosive, and looks like he’s shot straight out of a cannon. In coverage, Henley is as smooth as silk and had a great week of practice at the Senior Bowl to show off his skills. He has the ability to take on tight ends in man-coverage, and has a knack for finding the ball in zone (five interceptions in his final two years).  How he fits: Hybrid/WILL linebacker. 10 Senior Bowl prospects who helped themselves as potential Lions this week (Daiyan Henley, LB, Washington State:  It’s no secret the Lions need to improve their coverage ability at linebacker. Henley is a former safety who has bulked up to 230 pounds at jut under 6-foot-1 but has not lost one iota of his speed or quickness. Henley has sharp coverage instincts, quick reactions and flashed some very nice ball skills during the week.  He appears solidly in the 75-125 overall range in the draft. LBs in that range need to contribute on special teams as well as on D, and that’s something that really excites Henley. Wednesday Senior Bowl Team Practice Report: Keion White and John Michael Schmitz Shine on Day 2 (Daiyan Henley, LB | Washington State:  Daiyan Henley was incredibly impressive during coverage drills. The Washington State linebacker easily flipped his hips in transition, stuck to opponents everywhere on the field, and showed a defensive back-like burst to the ball. His ability to get a hand in and knock away passes was only surpassed by the way Henley was able to track the ball in the air 25 yards downfield and then position himself to break up the throw.) Thor Nystrom’s Senior Bowl Day 1 Practice Recap (2023) (Daiyon Henley (LB – Washington State):  Henley’s a player. I like the way he moves in coverage and reads the quarterback’s eyes — he’s going to be a pesky cover linebacker at the next level.  And during team drills on Tuesday, multiple times in the run game Henley made the correct decision and met the running back in the hole. We didn’t get the best idea for Henley’s play strength just because of the constitution of these drills.  On one particular rep, confronting Texas RB Roschon Johnson in the hole, Henley wrapped Johnson at the contact point but let go – it would have been interesting to see who won that interaction at full-go.  Henley is still learning the linebacker position, setting up a big week for him – a golden opportunity to display his progress to evaluators. Thor's 2023 Senior Bowl Preview (Most to Gain: Daiyan Henley - Perfect Senior Bowl prospect: Henley is both a fabulous underdog story, and a very real threat to skyrocket up draft boards. We see cases like this every year: Henley was an overlooked recruit who needed multiple years to find his correct position at the collegiate level.  He signed with Nevada as a two-star dual-threat quarterback in the 2017 class. From there, he was converted to receiver and saw action as a true freshman. For two years, he was a rotational receiver who also got work as a kick returner.  In 2020, Nevada switched him to defense – and while the Wolfpack clearly knew he needed to be on the field, they couldn’t figure out what to do with him, giving him snaps at safety, nickel, off-ball linebacker, and EDGE before a season-ending injury four games in. In 2021, the plan to develop Henley as a linebacker was more solidified and he broke out with 94 tackles.  This past year, Henley transferred to Wazzu for his final campaign. He had his national coming-out party, piling up 106 tackles, 12 TFL and four sacks in 12 games.  Henley is still learning the position, and he makes some frustrating beginner’s mistakes because of that. But his upside is tantalizing. The athleticism that made him a receiver/returner/safety is still very much apparent on tape. And Henley is an extremely efficient tackler – his 90.3 tackle grade last year was one of the class’ highest.  Henley’s pass-rushing game ticked up last season while his coverage – an area he was sensational in during the 2021 season with Nevada – fell back to mediocre territory. He finished top 10 among FBS off-ball linebackers in coverage grade for the 2021 season. So far with the Cougars, Henley has looked better than one could imagine.
